It is found that Ply adsorbed roughed silver electrode, it is easy to immobilize MP-11 with the electrostatic interaction and to prepare the MP-11/Ply/Ag modified electrode. The preparation method of the modified electrode is simple. In addition, the modified electrode obtained shows the high and stable electrocatalytic activity for O-2 reduction. It is also found that when the sixth coordination of heme in MP-11 is replaced with other coordination species with stronger coordination ability, such as imidazole, its formal redox potential shifts to the negative direction and the electrocatalytic activity for O-2 reduction is reduced.

A new kind of inorganic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was prepared by spontaneous adsorption of polyoxometalate anion, AsMo11VO404-, onto a gold surface from acidic aqueous solution. The adsorption process, structure, and electrochemical properties of the AsMo11VO404- SAM were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), electrochemistry, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The QCM data suggested that the self-assembling process could be described in terms of the Langmuir adsorption model, providing the value of the free energy of adsorption at -20 KJ mol(-1). The maximum surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold surface was determined from the QCM data to be 1.7 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), corresponding to a close-packed monolayer of AsMo11VO404- anion. The analysis of the voltammograms of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode showed three pairs of reversible peaks with an equal surface coverage of 1.78 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2) for each of the peaks, and the value was agreed well with the QCM data. In-situ STM image demonstrated that the AsMo11VO404- SAM was very uniform and no aggregates or multilayer could be observed. Furthermore, the high-resolution STM images revealed that the AsMo11VO404- SAM on Au(lll) surface was composed of square unit cells with a lattice space of 10-11 Angstrom at +0.7 V (vs Ag\AgCl). The value was quite close to the diameter of AsMo11VO404- anion obtained from X-ray crystallographic study. The surface coverage of the AsMo11VO404- SAM on gold electrode estimated from the STM image was around 1.8 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), which was consistent with the QCM and electrochemical results.

A novel method is employed for the simultaneous determination of both the calibration constant of an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and the active surface area of a polycrystalline gold electrode. A gold electrode: is immersed into a 1 mM KI/1 M H2SO4 solution and on which forms a neutral monolayer. The adsorbed iodine can then be completely oxidized into IO3-. The active surface area of a gold electrode can be obtained from the net electrolytic charge of the oxidation process, and the calibration constant in the EQCM can be calculated from the corresponding frequency shift. The result shows that this method is simple, convenient and valid. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Ultrathin multilayer films of a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate-molybdate complex and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) have been fabricated on a gold electrode precoated with a cysteamine self-assembled monolayer. The multilayer films have been characterized by optical spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance). Especially, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is developed to monitor the layer deposition processes. It provides important information such as double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance. All obtained results reveal regular film growth with each layer adsorption. Underpotential deposition(UPD) of copper at polycrystal gold surface under different concentrations has been studied, and its reversibility and stability in high concentration (0.2M CuSO4+0.IM H2SO4) have been demonstrated by cyclic voltermmetry and EQCM. A Valid approach to determine the gold electrode area in presence of adsorbed species has been provided by using Cu UPD method. Further, the growth kinetics of decane thiol on gold has also been investigated based on such a Cu UPD technique.

A flow injection analysis detection method for glucose is presented which is based on the oxidation of glucose by glucose oxidase followed by chemiluminescent detection of hydrogen peroxide. Both glucose oxidase and hematin, a chemiluminescent reaction catalyst, were bulk-immobilized conveniently by direct mixing with carbon paste, which allows renewal of the electrode surface by simply polishing or cutting to expose a new and fully active surface in the case of fouling. Luminol in reagent solution passed through the flow cell and reacted with hydrogen peroxide produced by the enzyme reactor in the presence of the catalyst to yield light. An applied potential of -0.4 V avoided the electrode fouling effectively. The log-log plot of the emitted light intensity vs glucose concentration was linear over the range of 1-100 mmol L-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.992. Application of this method to other chemiluminescent and bioluminescent systems is suggested. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

Chromium hexacyanoferrate (CrHCF) modified grassy carbon electrode (GC) in different electrolytes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. The results indicate that the behavior of CrHCF firm can be understood in term of two structures: Cr1/3Cr(III)Fe(II)(CN), and MCr(III)Fe(II)(CN)(6). Besides, the film exists in amorphous state: the outer layer is porous film, while the inner layer is relatively compact. According to the electrochemical reaction of CrHCF, the lattice can contract and expand with the cations' diffusion.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol at the Titanium oxide (TiOx, x<2) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied. The results show that the modified electrodes exhibit a significant electrocatalytic activity and good stability for the oxidation of methanol. Under the optimal conditions, the peak current density at 0.58 V for the oxidation of methanol in the positive-going sweep is about 526 mA/cm(2) at the scan rate of 5 mV/s in 0.5 mol/L CH3OH and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution and the over potential of the methanol oxidation at the modified electrode increases about 30 similar to 40 mV after 70 minutes at the current density of 100 mA/cm(2) and 50 mA/cm(2). The enhanced electrocatalytic activity and good stability are ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the TiOx film and the synergistic effect between Pt microparticles and TiOx.

Electroactive self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with well-defined electrochemical responses were prepared by spontaneous assembly of the inclusion complexes (CD/C8VComegaSH) of viologen-attached alkanethiols (C8VComegaSH) and alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin (CD). They were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The results demonstrate that the chemisorption process of CD/C8VComegaSH on gold substrate occurs through S-Au bonds, and that the redox sites in SAMs of CD/C8VComegaSH are in a much more uniform environment than those in SAMs of C8VComegaSH.

The interfacial characteristics of poly-L-lysine (PL) attached on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) were studied by an electrochemical method. The results indicated that PL\MPA layer inhibited partly the diffusion process of redox species in solution, and the electrode surface behaved like a microelectrode array. Its permeation effect was also strongly affected by Mg2+. The more Mg2+ ions were added into the electrolyte solution, the greater the difficulty with which the electron transfer of potassium ferricyanide took place. The three different conformations of PL on the electrode surface had different influences on the electron transfer processes of ferricyanide. PL in random coil state hindered most strongly the electron transfer behavior of ferricyanide, while the alpha-helical PL had nearly no effect and the effect of the beta-sheet state PL was intermediate of these. It was found that vitamin B-12 could be strongly adsorpted on the anodized glassy carbon electrode to form a vitamin Thy-modified glassy carbon electrode. The modified electrode is stable in a wide pH range. The electrochemical characteristics of the modified electrode were studied in details. In addition, it was found that the reduction of oxygen could be catalyzed by the modified electrode to form H2O2. An EC mechanism was suggested for the process, and the follow up chemical reaction might he the rate determined step.

The electrochemical behavior of flavine adenine dinucleotide (FAD) at a gold electrode involving adsorption of the reduced form FADH(2) and desorption of the oxidized form FAD has been studied by using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). EQCM can present information not only about the electrochemical behavior but also about the mass changes on the electrode surface. The electrochemical properties and frequency shifts were investigated in FAD solutions at different pH values, concentrations and scan rates. Reversible voltammograms were observed when pH<4.5 and irreversible voltammograms were found when pH greater than or equal to 4.5. It is found to be a diffusion controlled process when the concentration of FAD is lower than 2x10(-4) moll(-1) (pH 1.5). On the contrary, at concentrations higher than 2x10(-4) moll(-1) (pH 1.5), it is found to be an adsorption controlled process.

The direct electrochemistry of cytochrome c was studied at nanometer-sized rare earth element dioxide particle-modified gold electrodes. It was demonstrated that rare earth element oxides can accelerate the electrochemical reaction of cytochrome c and the reversibility of the electrochemical reaction of cytochrome c was related to the size of rare earth element oxide particles.

Investigation of the redox thermodynamics of horse heart cytochrome c at bare glassy carbon electrodes has been performed using cyclic voltammetry with a nonisothermal electrochemical cell. The thermodynamic parameters of the electron-transfer reaction of cytochrome c have been estimated in different component buffer solutions. The change DELTAS(re)-degrees in reaction center entropy and the formal potential E-degrees' (at 25-degrees-C, vs. standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)) for cytochrome c are found to be -64.1 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.251 V in phosphate buffer, -64.8 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.257 V in Tris + HCl buffer, -65.6 J K-1 mol-1 and 0.261 V in Tris+CH3COOH buffer (pH 7.0, ionic strength 100 mM). The temperature dependence of the formal potential obtained in phosphate buffer with or without NaCl in the range 5-55-degrees-C shows biphase characteristics in an alkaline solution with an intersection point at ca. 44-degrees-C or 42-degrees-C, which should be due to a structural change in the protein moiety of cytochrome c. However, in acidic and neutral solutions only a monotonic relationship between E-degrees' and temperature is observed. The effect of the buffer component on E-degrees' for cytochrome c is also discussed.
