By using a fast reaction technique which employs H2S gas as a fast-reacting chemical repair agent, it is possible to measure the competition kinetics between chemical repair reactions and oxygen fixation reactions in model DNA and cellular systems. In plasmid pBR322 DNA irradiated with electrons, we have compared the oxygen fixation reactions of the free radical precursors that lead to the production of single-strand (SSBs) and double-strand breaks (DSBs). For the oxygen-dependent fixation of radical damage leading to SSBs, a second-order rate constant of 2.3 x 10(8) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) was obtained compared to 8.9 x 10(7) dm(3) mol(-1) s(-1) for DSBs. The difference is in general agreement with predictions from a multiple-radical model where the precursor of a DSB originates from two radicals. The fixation of this precursor by oxygen will require both radicals to be fixed for the DSB to be formed, which will have slower kinetics than that of single free-radical precursors of SSBs. Novice and expert jugglers employ different visuomotor strategies: whereas novices look at the balls around their zeniths, experts tend to fixate their gaze at a central location within the pattern (so-called gaze-through). A gaze-through strategy may reflect visuomotor parsimony, i.e., the use of simpler visuomotor (oculomotor and/or attentional) strategies as afforded by superior tossing accuracy and error corrections. In addition, the more stable gaze during a gaze-through strategy may result in more accurate movement planning by providing a stable base for gaze-centered neural coding of ball motion and movement plans or for shifts in attention. To determine whether a stable gaze might indeed have such beneficial effects on juggling, we examined juggling variability during 3-ball cascade juggling with and without constrained gaze fixation (at various depths) in expert performers (n = 5). Novice jugglers were included (n = 5) for comparison, even though our predictions pertained specifically to expert juggling. We indeed observed that experts, but not novices, juggled significantly less variable when fixating, compared to unconstrained viewing. Thus, while visuomotor parsimony might still contribute to the emergence of a gaze-through strategy, this study highlights an additional role for improved movement planning. This role may be engendered by gaze-centered coding and/or attentional control mechanisms in the brain.

Carbon dioxide was reduced photocatalytically using aqueous CdS or ZnS colloids containing tetramethylammonium chloride to give the dimeric and tetrameric products namely, oxalate, glyoxylate, glycolate and tartrate. A model is presented to explain the role of the tetramethylammonium ions. Studies were also performed using ZnO, SiC, BaTiO3 and Sr TiO3, which in the absence of tetramethylammonium ions produced formate and formaldehyde. The relative quantum efficiencies of the six semiconductors were related to their band gaps and conduction band potentials. The role and effectiveness of several 'hole acceptor' (electron donor) compounds in this process is shown to be related to their redox potentials.
