By attaching a bulky, inductively electron-with drawing trifluoromethyl (CF3) group on the pyridyl ring of the rigid 2-[3(N-phenylcarbazolyl)]pyridine cyclometalated ligand, we successfully synthesized a new heteroleptic orange-emitting phosphorescent iridium(III) complex [Ir(L-1)(2)(acac)] 1 (HL1=5-trifluoromethyl-2-[3-(N-phenylcarbazolyl)]pyridine, Hacac = acetylacetone) in good yield.

An amorphous photoluminescent material based on a dithienylbenzothiadiazole structure has been used for the fabrication of organic red-light-emitting diodes. The synergistic effects of the electron-transport ability and exciton confinement of the emitting material allow for the fabrication of efficient pure-red-light-emitting devices without a hole blocker.

HigWy efficient DCJTB-doped device was realized by enhanced electron injection and exciton confinement. A fluorine end-capped linear phenylene/oxadiazole oligomer 2,5-bis(4-fluorobiphenyl-4'-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (1) and a trifluoromethyl end-capped oligomer 2,5-bis(4-trifluoromethylbiphenyl-4'-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (2) were designed and incorporated as an electron transporting/hole blocking material in the device structure ITO/NPB (60 mn)/DCJTB:Alq(3) (0.5%, 10 nm)/1 or 2 (20 nm)/Alq(3) (30 mn)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm). The devices showed highly efficient red luminescence. In particular, the device based on 1 achieved pure red luminescence at 620 run originating from DCJTB, with a narrow FWHI of 65 nm, maximal brightness of 13,300 cd/m(2) at voltage of 20.8 V and current density of ca. 355 mA/cm(2). High current and power efficiencies (> 3.6 cd/A. 1.01m/W) were retained within a wide range of current densities. Our results show efficient and stable DCJTB-doped red electroluminescence could be anticipated for practical applications by taking advantage of the present approaches. The control experiments using BCP were also studied.

Photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency is a key issue in designing successful light-emitting polymer systems. Exciton relaxation is strongly affected by exciton quenching at nonradiative trapping centers and the formation of excimers. These factors reduce the PL quantum yield of light-emitting polymers. In this work, we have systematically investigated the effects of exciton confinement on the PL quantum yield of an oligomer, polymer, and alternating block copolymer (ABC) PPV system. Time-resolved and temperature-dependent luminescence studies have been performed. The ABC design effectively confine photoexcitations within the chromophores, preventing exciton migration and excimer formation. An unusually high (PL) quantum yield (above 90%) in the solid state is reported for the alternating block copolymer PPV, as compared to that of similar to 30% of the polymer and oligomer model compounds. Triterpane and sterane biomarkers in the YA13-1 condensates from Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea
Resumo:
Triterpanes and steranes in condensates from the YA13-1 gas field, Qiongdongnan Basin, were monitored. The YA13-1 condensates have unusual biomarker distributions dominated by terpanes and steranes derived from higher plants. Anomalously abundant 1 got-oleanane and remarkably abundant bicadinanes are present in the YA13-1 condensates, whereas the 17alpha-hopane contents are extremely low. Taraxastane and significantly abundant 17alpha-diahopanes occur in the condensates. In addition, a number of unknown C-29 and C-30 pentacyclic triterpanes including previously unreported compounds were detected in the condensates, some of which are significantly abundant. The unknown compounds may be terrestrial biomarkers. C-29 homologues are relatively predominant among the regular and rearranged steranes. The diasterane concentrations are markedly higher than those of regular steranes. The maturity of the YA13-1 condensates is relatively high, at the peak to late oil generation stage (corresponding to 0.85-1.10% Ro), based on sterane and terpane and including bicadinane maturity parameters (i.e. T/(T-1 + R) and 2T/R bicadinane ratios). The above maturity assessment result is different from that based on diamondoid maturity parameters (%Ro = 1.60-1.70) [Org. Geochem. 25 (1996) 179], which can be explained by a contribution of hydrocarbons from two sources at different depths. The YA13-1 condensates were probably generated from the Yacheng and Lingshui coal-bearing source rocks buried both in the Qiongdongnan Basin (3400-5000 m) and in the Yinggehai Basin (>5000 m). The possible contribution of lower maturity hydrocarbons from the Yacheng and Lingshui Formations (3400-4100 m) in the Qiongdongnan Basin to the YA13-1 gases and condensates should not be neglected. In this thesis, two different sets of experiments are described. The first is an exploration of the microscopic superfluidity of dilute gaseous Bose- Einstein condensates. The second set of experiments were performed using transported condensates in a new BEC apparatus. Superfluidity was probed by moving impurities through a trapped condensate. The impurities were created using an optical Raman transition, which transferred a small fraction of the atoms into an untrapped hyperfine state. A dramatic reduction in the collisions between the moving impurities and the condensate was observed when the velocity of the impurities was close to the speed of sound of the condensate. This reduction was attributed to the superfluid properties of a BEC. In addition, we observed an increase in the collisional density as the number of impurity atoms increased. This enhancement is an indication of bosonic stimulation by the occupied final states. This stimulation was observed both at small and large velocities relative to the speed of sound. A theoretical calculation of the effect of finite temperature indicated that collision rate should be enhanced at small velocities due to thermal excitations. However, in the current experiments we were insensitive to this effect. Finally, the factor of two between the collisional rate between indistinguishable and distinguishable atoms was confirmed. A new BEC apparatus that can transport condensates using optical tweezers was constructed. Condensates containing 10-15 million sodium atoms were produced in 20 s using conventional BEC production techniques. These condensates were then transferred into an optical trap that was translated from the âproduction chamber’ into a separate vacuum chamber: the âscience chamber’. Typically, we transferred 2-3 million condensed atoms in less than 2 s. This transport technique avoids optical and mechanical constrainsts of conventional condensate experiments and allows for the possibility of novel experiments. In the first experiments using transported BEC, we loaded condensed atoms from the optical tweezers into both macroscopic and miniaturized magnetic traps. Using microfabricated wires on a silicon chip, we observed excitation-less propagation of a BEC in a magnetic waveguide. The condensates fragmented when brought very close to the wire surface indicating that imperfections in the fabrication process might limit future experiments. Finally, we generated a continuous BEC source by periodically replenishing a condensate held in an optical reservoir trap using fresh condensates delivered using optical tweezers. More than a million condensed atoms were always present in the continuous source, raising the possibility of realizing a truly continuous atom lase.

The spectrum of collective excitations of oblate toroidal condensates within the Bogoliubov approximation was studied, and the dynamical stability of ring currents around the torus explored. The transition from spheroidal to toroidal geometry of the trap displaced the energy levels into narrow bands. A simple, but accurate, formula was detailed for the lowest angular acoustic modes of excitation, and the splitting energy when a background current is present.

Controlling coherent electromagnetic interactions in molecular systems is a problem of both fundamental interest and important applicative potential in the development of photonic and opto-electronic devices. The strength of these interactions determines both the absorption and emission properties of molecules coupled to nanostructures, effectively governing the optical properties of such a composite metamaterial. Here we report on the observation of strong coupling between a plasmon supported by an assembly of oriented gold nanorods (ANR) and a molecular exciton. We show that the coupling is easily engineered and is deterministic as both spatial and spectral overlap between the plasmonic structure and molecular aggregates are controlled. We think that these results in conjunction with the flexible geometry of the ANR are of potential significance to the development of plasmonic molecular devices.

We study the establishment of vortex entanglement in remote Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We consider a two-mode photonic resource entangled in its orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom and, by exploiting the process of light-to-BEC OAM transfer, demonstrate that such entanglement can be efficiently passed to the matterlike systems. Our proposal thus represents a building block for novel dissipation-free and long-memory communication channels based on OAM. We discuss issues of practical realizability, stressing the feasibility of our scheme, and present an operative technique for the indirect inference of the set vortex entanglement.

The stability of colliding Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated. A set of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations is thus considered, and analyzed via a perturbative approach. No assumption is made on the signs ( or magnitudes) of the relevant parameters like the scattering lengths and the coupling coefficients. The formalism is therefore valid for asymmetric as well as symmetric coupled condensate wave states. A new set of explicit criteria is derived and analyzed. An extended instability region, in addition to an enhanced instability growth rate, is predicted for unstable two component bosons, as compared to the individual ( uncoupled) state.

A time-dependent method for calculating the collective excitation frequencies and densities of a trapped, inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate with circulation is presented. The results are compared with time-independent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The method is based on time-dependent linear-response theory combined with spectral analysis of moments of the excitation modes of interest. The technique is straightforward to apply, extremely efficient in our implementation with parallel fast Fourier transform methods, and produces highly accurate results. For high dimensionality or low symmetry the time-dependent approach is a more practical computational scheme and produces accurate and reliable data. The method is suitable for general trap geometries, condensate flows and condensates permeated with defects and vortex structures.

Vortex dynamics in inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates are studied numerically in two and three dimensions. We simulate the precession of a single vortex around the center of a trapped condensate, and use the Magnus force to estimate the precession frequency. Vortex ring dynamics in a spherical trap are also simulated, and we discover that a ring undergoes oscillatory motion around a circle of maximum energy. The position of this locus is calculated as a function of the number of condensed atoms. In the presence of dissipation, the amplitude of the oscillation will increase, eventually resulting in self-annihilation of the ring.

Above a critical velocity, the dominant mechanism of energy transfer between a moving object and a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate is vortex formation. In this paper, we discuss the critical velocity for vortex formation and the link between vortex shedding and drag in both homogeneous and inhomogeneous condensates. We find that at supersonic velocities sound radiation also contributes significantly to the drag force.
