Phase relations and the liquidus surface in the system "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 at manganese-rich alloy saturation have been investigated in the temperature range from 1373 to 1773 K. This system contains the primary-phase fields of tridymite and cristobalite (SiO2); mullite (3Al(2)O(3).2SiO(2)); corundum (Al2O3); galaxite (MnO.Al2O3); manganosite (MnO); tephroite (2MnO.SiO2); rhodonite (MnO.SiO2); spessartine (3MnO.Al2O3.SiO2); and the compound MnO.Al2O3.2SiO(2).

Phase-equilibrium data and the liquidus for the system. "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3-SiO2) at a manganese-rich alloy saturation have been determined in the temperature range from 1423 to 1723 K. The results are presented in the form of a pseudoternary section "MnO"-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) with an Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.41. The following primary phases are present in the range of conditions investigated:, 3Al(2)O(3).2SiO(2); SiO2; MnO.Al2O3-2SiO(2); (Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; 2(Mn,Ca)O.SiO2; MnO.Al2O3; (Mn,Ca)O; alpha-2CaO.SiO2; alpha'-2CaO.SiO2; 2CaO.Al2O3.SiO2; CaO.SiO2, and CaO.Al2O3.2SiO(2). The presence of alumina in this system is shown to have a significant effect on the liquidus compared to the system "MnO"-CaO-SiO2, leading to, the stabilization of the anorthite and gehlenite phases.

A thermodynamic approach is developed in this paper to describe the behavior of a subcritical fluid in the neighborhood of vapor-liquid interface and close to a graphite surface. The fluid is modeled as a system of parallel molecular layers. The Helmholtz free energy of the fluid is expressed as the sum of the intrinsic Helmholtz free energies of separate layers and the potential energy of their mutual interactions calculated by the 10-4 potential. This Helmholtz free energy is described by an equation of state (such as the Bender or Peng-Robinson equation), which allows us a convenient means to obtain the intrinsic Helmholtz free energy of each molecular layer as a function of its two-dimensional density. All molecular layers of the bulk fluid are in mechanical equilibrium corresponding to the minimum of the total potential energy. In the case of adsorption the external potential exerted by the graphite layers is added to the free energy. The state of the interface zone between the liquid and the vapor phases or the state of the adsorbed phase is determined by the minimum of the grand potential. In the case of phase equilibrium the approach leads to the distribution of density and pressure over the transition zone. The interrelation between the collision diameter and the potential well depth was determined by the surface tension. It was shown that the distance between neighboring molecular layers substantially changes in the vapor-liquid transition zone and in the adsorbed phase with loading. The approach is considered in this paper for the case of adsorption of argon and nitrogen on carbon black. In both cases an excellent agreement with the experimental data was achieved without additional assumptions and fitting parameters, except for the fluid-solid potential well depth. The approach has far-reaching consequences and can be readily extended to the model of adsorption in slit pores of carbonaceous materials and to the analysis of multicomponent adsorption systems. A thermodynamic approach based on the Bender equation of state is suggested for the analysis of supercritical gas adsorption on activated carbons at high pressure. The approach accounts for the equality of the chemical potential in the adsorbed phase and that in the corresponding bulk phase and the distribution of elements of the adsorption volume (EAV) over the potential energy for gas-solid interaction. This scheme is extended to subcritical fluid adsorption and takes into account the phase transition in EAV The method is adapted to gravimetric measurements of mass excess adsorption and has been applied to the adsorption of argon, nitrogen, methane, ethane, carbon dioxide, and helium on activated carbon Norit R I in the temperature range from 25 to 70 C. The distribution function of adsorption volume elements over potentials exhibits overlapping peaks and is consistently reproduced for different gases. It was found that the distribution function changes weakly with temperature, which was confirmed by its comparison with the distribution function obtained by the same method using nitrogen adsorption isotherm at 77 K. It was shown that parameters such as pore volume and skeleton density can be determined directly from adsorption measurements, while the conventional approach of helium expansion at room temperature can lead to erroneous results due to the adsorption of helium in small pores of activated carbon. The approach is a convenient tool for analysis and correlation of excess adsorption isotherms over a wide range of pressure and temperature. Anew thermodynamic approach has been developed in this paper to analyze adsorption in slitlike pores. The equilibrium is described by two thermodynamic conditions: the Helmholtz free energy must be minimal, and the grand potential functional at that minimum must be negative. This approach has led to local isotherms that describe adsorption in the form of a single layer or two layers near the pore walls. In narrow pores local isotherms have one step that could be either very sharp but continuous or discontinuous benchlike for a definite range of pore width. The latter reflects a so-called 0 --> 1 monolayer transition. In relatively wide pores, local isotherms have two steps, of which the first step corresponds to the appearance of two layers near the pore walls, while the second step corresponds to the filling of the space between these layers. All features of local isotherms are in agreement with the results obtained from the density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations. The approach is used for determining pore size distributions of carbon materials. We illustrate this with the benzene adsorption data on activated carbon at 20, 50, and 80 degreesC, argon adsorption on activated carbon Norit ROX at 87.3 K, and nitrogen adsorption on activated carbon Norit R1 at 77.3 K.

A model for binary mixture adsorption accounting for energetic heterogeneity and intermolecular interactions is proposed in this paper. The model is based on statistical thermodynamics, and it is able to describe molecular rearrangement of a mixture in a nonuniform adsorption field inside a cavity. The Helmholtz free energy obtained in the framework of this approach has upper and lower limits, which define a permissible range in which all possible solutions will be found. One limit corresponds to a completely chaotic distribution of molecules within a cavity, while the other corresponds to a maximum ordered molecular structure. Comparison of the nearly ideal O-2-N-2-zeolite NaX system at ambient temperature with the system Of O-2-N-2-zeolite CaX at 144 K has shown that a decrease of temperature leads to a molecular rearrangement in the cavity volume, which results from the difference in the fluid-solid interactions. The model is able to describe this behavior and therefore allows predicting mixture adsorption more accurately compared to those assuming energetic uniformity of the adsorption volume. Another feature of the model is its ability to correctly describe the negative deviations from Raoult's law exhibited by the O-2-N-2-CaX system at 144 K. Analysis of the highly nonideal CO2-C2H6-zeolite NaX system has shown that the spatial molecular rearrangement in separate cavities is induced by not only the ion-quadrupole interaction of the CO2 molecule but also the significant difference in molecular size and the difference between the intermolecular interactions of molecules of the same species and those of molecules of different species. This leads to the highly ordered structure of this system.

For Markov processes on the positive integers with the origin as an absorbing state, Ferrari, Kesten, Martinez and Picco studied the existence of quasi-stationary and limiting conditional distributions by characterizing quasi-stationary distributions as fixed points of a transformation Phi on the space of probability distributions on {1, 2,.. }. In the case of a birth-death process, the components of Phi(nu) can be written down explicitly for any given distribution nu. Using this explicit representation, we will show that Phi preserves likelihood ratio ordering between distributions. A conjecture of Kryscio and Lefevre concerning the quasi-stationary distribution of the SIS logistic epidemic follows as a corollary.

Many large-scale stochastic systems, such as telecommunications networks, can be modelled using a continuous-time Markov chain. However, it is frequently the case that a satisfactory analysis of their time-dependent, or even equilibrium, behaviour is impossible. In this paper, we propose a new method of analyzing Markovian models, whereby the existing transition structure is replaced by a more amenable one. Using rates of transition given by the equilibrium expected rates of the corresponding transitions of the original chain, we are able to approximate its behaviour. We present two formulations of the idea of expected rates. The first provides a method for analysing time-dependent behaviour, while the second provides a highly accurate means of analysing equilibrium behaviour. We shall illustrate our approach with reference to a variety of models, giving particular attention to queueing and loss networks. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Let X and Y be Hausdorff topological vector spaces, K a nonempty, closed, and convex subset of X, C: K--> 2(Y) a point-to-set mapping such that for any x is an element of K, C(x) is a pointed, closed, and convex cone in Y and int C(x) not equal 0. Given a mapping g : K --> K and a vector valued bifunction f : K x K - Y, we consider the implicit vector equilibrium problem (IVEP) of finding x* is an element of K such that f (g(x*), y) is not an element of - int C(x) for all y is an element of K. This problem generalizes the (scalar) implicit equilibrium problem and implicit variational inequality problem. We propose the dual of the implicit vector equilibrium problem (DIVEP) and establish the equivalence between (IVEP) and (DIVEP) under certain assumptions. Also, we give characterizations of the set of solutions for (IVP) in case of nonmonotonicity, weak C-pseudomonotonicity, C-pseudomonotonicity, and strict C-pseudomonotonicity, respectively. Under these assumptions, we conclude that the sets of solutions are nonempty, closed, and convex. MCM-41 periodic mesoporous silicates with a high degree of structural ordering are synthesized and used as model adsorbents to study the isotherm prediction of nitrogen adsorption. The nitrogen adsorption isotherm at 77 K for a macroporous silica is measured and used in high-resolution alpha(s)-plot comparative analysis to determine the external surface area, total surface area and primary mesopore volume of the MCM-41 materials. Adsorption equilibrium data of nitrogen on the different pore size MCM-41 samples (pore diameters from 2.40 to 4.92 nm) are also obtained. Based on the Broekhoff and de Boer' thermodynamic analysis, the nitrogen adsorption isotherms for the different pore size MCM-41 samples are interpreted using a novel strategy, in which the parameters of an empirical expression, used to represent the potential of interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, are obtained by fitting only the multilayer region prior to capillary condensation for C-16 MCM-41. Subsequently the entire isotherm, including the phase transition, is predicted for all the different pore size MCM-41 samples without any fitting. The results show that the prediction of multilayer adsorption and total adsorbed amount are in good agreement with the experimental isotherms. The predictions of the relative pressure corresponding to capillary equilibrium (coexistence) transition agree remarkably with experimental data on the adsorption branch even for hysteretic isotherms, confirming that this is the branch appropriate for pore size distribution analysis. The impact of pore radius on the adsorption film thickness and capillary coexistence pressure is also investigated, and found to agree with the experimental data. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. Diferenças na susceptibilidade do hospedeiro à infecção, na gravidade e na permanência do quadro clínico da doença podem ser atribuídas, em parte, às variações da resposta imune. Estas variações são associadas a polimorfismos de nucleotídeo único (do inglês: single nucleotide polymorphisms - SNPs). Como estudo prévio, foi realizada a caracterização da população geral do Espírito Santo (ES) - Brasil e de uma subpopulação do estado, de origem Pomerana, quanto aos SNPs -131 H/R, -336 A/G, TaqI, -308 A/G, -590 C/T, -174 G/C e +874 A/T nos genes FcγRIIa, CD209, VDR, TNFα, IL-4, IL-6 e INF-γ, respectivamente. Cem indivíduos da Grande Vitória representaram a população geral do ES e 59 indivíduos de Santa Maria de Jetibá representaram a população de origem Pomerana. Como a fase aguda da dengue é bem caracterizada, este estudo objetivou ampliar o conhecimento da fase de convalescença. Noventa e seis indivíduos diagnosticados com dengue sintomática no final de 2012 e início de 2013, no ES, foram acompanhados por 60 dias a partir do início dos sintomas por meio do preenchimento de um questionário clínico e epidemiológico em quatro entrevistas. A persistência de 37 sintomas clínicos da dengue foi avaliada. Para analisar a influência da genética do sistema imunológico do hospedeiro na persistência de sintomas clínicos da dengue na fase de convalescença, foi determinada a associação entre os sete SNPs, para os quais a população do ES foi caracterizada, e a persistência de sintomas. O DNA genômico dos participantes do estudo foi extraído do sangue periférico e a genotipagem dos SNPs foi realizada por reação em cadeia da polimerase - polimorfismo de comprimento de fragmento de restrição (do inglês: polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism - PCR-RFLP) As frequências genotípicas de todos os SNPs encontraram-se em equilíbrio de Hardy-Weinberg (do inglês: Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium - HWE), com exceção do SNP no gene IL-6. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante nas frequências genotípicas dos SNPs nos genes FcγRIIa, CD209, VDR, TNF-α e IL-4 entre as duas populações. Diferença estatisticamente significante foi encontrada entre as duas populações nas distribuições genotípicas dos SNPs nos genes IL-6 (p = 0,03) e INF-γ (p = 0,007). Trinta e sessenta dias após o início dos sintomas, 38,5% e 11,5% dos indivíduos com dengue sintomática reportaram ter pelo menos um sintoma clínico da dengue, respectivamente. Dos sintomas analisados, os mais persistentes foram os relacionados à síndrome da fadiga como mialgia, artralgia, astenia e mal-estar, sendo a mialgia o mais frequente. A persistência de sintomas em 30 dias foi associada ao gênero feminino (p = 0,044) e a persistência de sintomas constitucionais foi associada à dengue secundária (p = 0,041). O SNP no gene FcγRIIa, foi associado à persistência de sintomas em 30 dias, no subgrupo de indivíduos com dengue secundária (p = 0,046), sendo a presença do alelo H associada à não persistência de sintomas (p = 0,014). A presença do alelo A do SNP no gene TNF-α foi associada à não persistência de sintomas no subgrupo de indivíduos com dengue secundária (p = 0,025), sendo o genótipo GG associado à persistência de sintomas neurológicos, psicológicos e comportamentais em 30 dias (p = 0,038). A presença do alelo C do SNP no gene IL-6 foi associado à persistência de sintomas dermatológicos em 30 dias (p = 0,005). O perfil genético desses SNPs pode favorecer o estabelecimento de marcadores imunogenéticos associados à fase convalescente da infecção pelo vírus da dengue (do inglês: dengue virus - DENV).

Reinforcement Learning is an area of Machine Learning that deals with how an agent should take actions in an environment such as to maximize the notion of accumulated reward. This type of learning is inspired by the way humans learn and has led to the creation of various algorithms for reinforcement learning. These algorithms focus on the way in which an agent’s behaviour can be improved, assuming independence as to their surroundings. The current work studies the application of reinforcement learning methods to solve the inverted pendulum problem. The importance of the variability of the environment (factors that are external to the agent) on the execution of reinforcement learning agents is studied by using a model that seeks to obtain equilibrium (stability) through dynamism – a Cart-Pole system or inverted pendulum. We sought to improve the behaviour of the autonomous agents by changing the information passed to them, while maintaining the agent’s internal parameters constant (learning rate, discount factors, decay rate, etc.), instead of the classical approach of tuning the agent’s internal parameters. The influence of changes on the state set and the action set on an agent’s capability to solve the Cart-pole problem was studied. We have studied typical behaviour of reinforcement learning agents applied to the classic BOXES model and a new form of characterizing the environment was proposed using the notion of convergence towards a reference value. We demonstrate the gain in performance of this new method applied to a Q-Learning agent.
