This research aimed to identify any common factors that have enabled and/or motivated SMEs to successfully implement ISO 14001 whilst the majority have not. It also identified what challenges and barriers SMEs face in doing so and how some have overcome these. The existing literature suggests that the majority of SMEs perceive their environmental impacts to be proportional to their size; have a poor understanding of environmental issues; have a poor awareness of environmental regulations; do that have the necessary expertise or leadership to address environmental issues and that SMEs with an environmental management system such as ISO 14001 are very much the minority. The main factors that influenced whether an SME had implemented ISO 14001 were: competitive advantage, regulatory compliance, supply chain pressures, leadership, expertise, resources and external support. This research used qualitative analysis of interviews with managers and directors from 8 SMEs with ISO 14001 and 4 without. All of the SMEs were based in the West Midlands or Staffordshire. Interviews were also conducted with 3 organisations offering support to businesses on environmental issues and with 1 large business who was engaging their suppliers (which included SMEs within this sample) on environmental issues. The research found that there were four main factors that enabled or motivated the SMEs to implement ISO 14001, these were: leadership, supply chain pressures, external support and SMEs' history and experience of accredited management systems. The main challenges that these business had to overcome and that prevented the other SMEs from achieving ISO 14001 were: achieving regulatory compliance, perceived financial cost, lack of perceived competitive advantage, access to relevant and affordable support and for those SMEs without ISO 14001 there was very little perceived external pressure or need for them to do so.

He infused a rigorous theoretical framework of industrial organization economics with the then still embryonic field of strategic management and elevated it to its current status as an academic discipline. Porter's outstanding career is also characterized by its cross-disciplinary nature. Following his most important work on strategic management, he then made a leap to the policy side and dealt with a completely different set of analytical units. More recently he has made a foray into inner city development, environmental regulations, and health care services. El presente trabajo de titulación tiene como finalidad la evaluación, el diagnóstico y la elaboración de un plan de mejoras que permita optimizar los procesos de depuración de las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales de los sectores Pambadel y Zhuringualo del Cantón Girón. En el diagnóstico de las PTAR se realizó la caracterización de los afluentes y efluentes; los valores obtenidos se compararon con la normativa ambiental TULSMA, a fin de evaluar el cumplimiento. Los resultados de laboratorio de los años 2014, 2015 y 2016junto con la valoración in situpermitieron determinar los porcentajes de eficiencia de las depuradoras. Laseficiencias alcanzadas en el 2014 fueron de 70,98% para Pambadel, 69,14% en Zhuringualo, en el año 2015 de -266,94% paraplanta de Pambadel, 66,03% para Zhuringualo, en el 2016 de 40,45% y 71,23% respectivamente. Al momento de comparar con la normativa encontramos incumplimiento en parámetros como: fósforo, coliformes totales y termotolerantes. También se efectuó un análisis social en el cual se encuestó a los pobladores de las zonas de influencia directa de las PTAR con la finalidad de conocer las necesidades y molestias que estas generan. Concluyendo que es necesaria la implementación del plan de mejoras que implica los siguientes procesos de optimización: un programa de mantenimiento emergente y remodelación de infraestructura deteriorada, la implementación de un laboratorio básico, la construcción de un sistema de pretratamiento basándose en los planos de diseño y la realización de estudios técnicos posteriores.

Actualmente el sector turismo se ha ido posicionando como una de las principales fuentes de prosperidad (en términos de empleo, bienestar y riqueza) por encima de grandes industrias como la automotriz y la petrolera, lo cual, es considerado por las Naciones Unidas como una gran oportunidad de desarrollo para los países emergentes. Colombia, es un ejemplo de esta situación por su gran potencial en turismo naturaleza, el cual está comenzando a incluirse en planes de desarrollo turístico como en Villavicencio, actual epicentro comercial de los llanos orientales y líder en el desarrollo turístico del Meta. El trabajo pretende ser un estudio de caso que evidencie los factores que han impedido que el desarrollo sostenible progrese de forma paralela al crecimiento turístico que se está dando en la región, enfocado en los alojamientos urbanos y rurales de la capital del Meta. A partir de esto, se realiza una encuesta a 42 hoteles, una vez vistos los resultados está, se analiza la manera en que es asimilada la sostenibilidad desde un punto de vista práctico. La información recopilada revela que los agentes turísticos presentan carencia de concientización, respecto al movimiento “verde” que se está dando a nivel mundial, no tienen como prioridad los temas sostenibles, desconocen las normas ambientales y no tienen claridad sobre los procesos de certificación

This research is part of the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), which was initiated in 1998. In 1995-96, a baseline study on the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of proposed FKNMS management strategies and regulations of commercial fishers, dive operators and on selected environmental group members was conducted by researchers at the University of Florida and the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Atmospheric and Marine Science (RSMAS). The baseline study was funded by the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program, and components of the study were published by Florida Sea Grant and in several peer reviewed journals. The study was accepted into the Socioeconomic Research & Monitoring Program at a workshop to design the program in 1998, and workshop participants recommended that the study be replicated every ten years. The 10-year replication was conducted in 2004-05 (commercial fishers) 2006 (dive operators) and 2007 (environmental group members) by the same researchers at RSMAS, while the University of Florida researchers were replaced by Thomas J. Murray & Associates, Inc., which conducted the commercial fishing panels in the FKNMS. The 10-year replication study was funded by NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program. The study not only makes 10-year comparisons in the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of FKNMS management strategies and regulations, but it also establishes new baselines for future monitoring efforts. Things change, and following the principles of “adaptive management”, management has responded with changes in the management plan strategies and regulations. Some of the management strategies and regulations that were being proposed at the time of the baseline 1995-96 study were changed before the management plan and regulations went into effect in July 1997. This was especially true for the main focus of the study which was the various types of marine zones in the draft and final zoning action plan. Some of the zones proposed were changed significantly and subsequently new zones have been created. This study includes 10-year comparisons of socioeconomic/demographic profiles of each user group; sources and usefulness of information; knowledge of purposes of FKNMS zones; perceived beneficiaries of the FKNMS zones; views on FKNMS processes to develop management strategies and regulations; views on FKNMS zone outcomes; views on FKNMS performance; and general support for FKNMS. In addition to new baseline information on FKNMS zones, new baseline information was developed for spatial use, investment and costs-and-earnings for commercial fishers and dive operators, and views on resource conditions for all three user groups. Statistical tests were done to detect significant changes in both the distribution of responses to questions and changes in mean scores for items replicated over the 10-year period. This paper investigates the determinants of agricultural land price in several regions in France over the period 1994-2011, using individual plot transaction data, with a particular emphasis on agricultural subsidies and nitrate zoning regulations. It found a positive but relatively small capitalisation effect of the total subsidies per hectare. The data revealed that agricultural subsidies capitalised, at least to some extent, but the magnitude of such a capitalisation depends on the region considered, on the type of subsidy considered, and on the location of the plot in a nitrate surplus zone or not. Only land set-aside premiums significantly capitalise into land price, while single farm payments have a significant positive capitalisation impact only for plots located in a nitrate-surplus zone.
