Amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) alloy, upon heating crystallize to a metastable NaCl structure around 150 degrees C and then to a stable hexagonal structure at high temperatures (>= 250 degrees C). It has been generally understood that the phase change takes place between amorphous and the metastable NaCl structure and not between the amorphous and the stable hexagonal phase. In the present work, it is observed that the thermally evaporated (GST)(1-x)Se-x thin films (0 <= x <= 0.50) crystallize directly to the stable hexagonal structure for x >= 0.10, when annealed at temperatures >= 150 degrees C. The intermediate NaCl structure has been observed only for x, 0.10. Chemically ordered network of GST is largely modified for x >= 0.10. Resistance, thermal stability and threshold voltage of the films are found to increase with the increase of Se. The contrast in electrical resistivity between the amorphous and crystalline phases is about 6 orders of magnitude. The increase in Se shifts the absorption edge to lower wavelength and the band gap widens from 0.63 to 1.05 eV. Higher resistance ratio, higher crystallization temperature, direct transition to the stable phase indicate that (GST)(1-x)Se-x films are better candidates for phase change memory applications.

In this paper, we report the compositional variation-dependent phase stability of hydroxyapatite (Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)) on doping with silver. The transformation of hydroxyapatite to (beta/alpha) tricalcium phosphate phases during sintering has been explored using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The optical absorption spectroscopy analysis reveals the presence of Ag+ ions at low doping levels. As the doping increases, abundance of Ag particles is enhanced.

We investigated the nature of the cohesive energy between graphane sheets via multiple CH center dot center dot center dot HC interactions, using density functional theory (DFT) including dispersion correction (Grimmes D3 approach) computations of n]graphane sigma dimers (n = 6-73). For comparison, we also evaluated the binding between graphene sheets that display prototypical pi/pi interactions. The results were analyzed using the block-localized wave function (BLW) method, which is a variant of ab initio valence bond (VB) theory. BLW interprets the intermolecular interactions in terms of frozen interaction energy (Delta E-F) composed of electrostatic and Pauli repulsion interactions, polarization (Delta E-pol), charge-transfer interaction (Delta E-CT), and dispersion effects (Delta E-disp). The BLW analysis reveals that the cohesive energy between graphane sheets is dominated by two stabilizing effects, namely intermolecular London dispersion and two-way charge transfer energy due to the sigma CH -> sigma*(HC) interactions. The shift of the electron density around the nonpolar covalent C-H bonds involved in the intermolecular interaction decreases the C-H bond lengths uniformly by 0.001 angstrom. The Delta E-CT term, which accounts for similar to 15% of the total binding energy, results in the accumulation of electron density in the interface area between two layers. This accumulated electron density thus acts as an electronic glue for the graphane layers and constitutes an important driving force in the self-association and stability of graphane under ambient conditions. Similarly, the double faced adhesive tape style of charge transfer interactions was also observed among graphene sheets in which it accounts for similar to 18% of the total binding energy. The binding energy between graphane sheets is additive and can be expressed as a sum of CH center dot center dot center dot HC interactions, or as a function of the number of C-H bonds.

To harvest solar energy more efficiently, novel Ag2S/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions were synthesized by a hydrothermal route. This novel photocatalyst was synthesized by impregnating Ag2S into a Bi2WO6 semiconductor by a hydrothermal route without any surfactants or templates. The as prepared structures were characterized by multiple techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL). The characterization results suggest mesoporous hierarchical spherical structures with a high surface area and improved photo response in the visible spectrum. Compared to bare Bi2WO6, Ag2S/Bi2WO6 exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of dye Rhodamine B (RhB). Although silver based catalysts are easily eroded by photogenerated holes, the Ag2S/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst was found to be highly stable in the cyclic experiments. Based on the results of BET, Pl and DRS analysis, two possible reasons have been proposed for the enhanced visible light activity and stability of this novel photocatalyst: (1) broadening of the photoabsorption range and (2) efficient separation of photoinduced charge carriers which does not allow the photoexcited electrons to accumulate on the conduction band of Ag2S and hence prevents the photocorrosion.

Lipase and surfactant together form a potent pair in various biotransformation, industrial application and biotechnological studies. The present investigation deals with changes in the activity, stability and structure of lipase from Rhizopus oryzae NRRL 3562 in presence of long chain ionic liquid-type imidazolium surfactant. Both the activity and stability were found to be enhanced in presence of the surfactant at low concentration (1-125 mu M) followed by inhibition at high concentration. The activity increased by 80% and thermal deactivation temperature raised by 2.5 degrees C. Investigations by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and circular dichroism revealed structural changes leading to rise in beta-sheet content and lowering of a-helix at low surfactant concentrations. Deactivation at high concentration correlated with greater structural changes depicted by spectroscopic studies. Isothermal titration calorimetric studies showed the binding to be spontaneous in nature involving non-covalent interactions. High negative value of entropy signifies exposure of hydrophobic domains and increase in structural rigidity, which correlates with active site being more accessible and rigid in presence of the surfactant. Application of these surfactants hold greater potential in the field of lipase based biotransformations, enzyme structural modifications and studies. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Biogenesis of the iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster is an indispensable process in living cells. In mammalian mitochondria, the initial step of the Fe-S cluster assembly process is assisted by the NFS1-ISD11 complex, which delivers sulfur to scaffold protein ISCU during Fe-S cluster synthesis. Although ISD11 is an essential protein, its cellular role in Fe-S cluster biogenesis is still not defined. Our study maps the important ISD11 amino acid residues belonging to putative helix 1 (Phe-40), helix 3 (Leu-63, Arg-68, Gln-69, Ile-72, Tyr-76), and C-terminal segment (Leu-81, Glu-84) are critical for in vivo Fe-S cluster biogenesis. Importantly, mutation of these conserved ISD11 residues into alanine leads to its compromised interaction with NFS1, resulting in reduced stability and enhanced aggregation of NFS1 in the mitochondria. Due to altered interaction with ISD11 mutants, the levels of NFS1 and Isu1 were significantly depleted, which affects Fe-S cluster biosynthesis, leading to reduced electron transport chain complex (ETC) activity and mitochondrial respiration. In humans, a clinically relevant ISD11 mutation (R68L) has been associated in the development of a mitochondrial genetic disorder, COXPD19. Our findings highlight that the ISD11 R68A/R68L mutation display reduced affinity to form a stable subcomplex with NFS1, and thereby fails to prevent NFS1 aggregation resulting in impairment of the Fe-S cluster biogenesis. The prime affected machinery is the ETC complex, which showed compromised redox properties, causing diminished mitochondrial respiration. Furthermore, the R68L ISD11 mutant displayed accumulation of mitochondrial iron and reactive oxygen species, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, which correlates with the phenotype observed in COXPD19 patients.

A novel solvothermal method has been used for the synthesis of porous ellipsoidal GeO2 particles with oleic acid and oleylamine as solvent and co-surfactant, respectively and its performance has been studied as an anode material for Li ion battery applications. The presence of highly hydrophobic oleic acid and oleylamine on the surface of the as synthesized sample imparts a detrimental effect on its performance. Although removal of the capping agents with glacial acetic acid improves the performance to some extent, a drastic enhancement in both the specific capacity and cycling stability is observed when the nanoparticles are wrapped with rGO/PANI composites at low temperature. Yb3+Er3+-codoped chloride-modified germanate-bismuth-lead glasses have been synthesized by the conventional melting and quenching method. Structural and thermal stability properties have been obtained on the basis of the Raman spectra and differential thermal analysis, which indicate that the PbCl2 addition has an important influence on the phonon density of states, maximum phonon energy, and thermal stability of host glasses. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters and quantum efficiencies were calculated on the basis of the Judd-Ofelt theory and lifetime measurements. For the 1.53 mu m emission band, the full widths at the half-maximum increase and peak wavelengths are blueshifted with increasing PbCl2 content. Moreover, the effect of the PbCl2 addition on the phonon density of states, OH- content, and upconversion luminescence has been discussed and evaluated. Our results reveal that, with increasing PbCl2 content, the decrease of phonon density and OH- content contributes more to the enhanced upconversion emissions than that of maximum phonon energy. High frequency Rayleigh and Sezawa modes propagating in the ZnO/GaAs system capable of operating immersed in liquid helium have been engineered. In the case of the Rayleigh mode, the strong attenuation produced by the liquid is counteracted by the strengthening of the mode induced by the ZnO. However, in the case of the Sezawa modes, the attenuation is strongly reduced taking advantage of the depth profile of their acoustic Poynting vectors, that extend deeper into the layered system, reducing the energy radiated into the fluid. Thus, both tailored modes will be suitable for acoustically-driven single-electron and single-photon devices in ZnO-coated GaAs-based systems with the best thermal stability provided by the liquid helium bath. © 2012 IEEE.

A novel ultra-lightweight three-dimensional (3-D) cathode system for lithium sulphur (Li-S) batteries has been synthesised by loading sulphur on to an interconnected 3-D network of few-layered graphene (FLG) via a sulphur solution infiltration method. A free-standing FLG monolithic network foam was formed as a negative of a Ni metallic foam template by CVD followed by etching away of Ni. The FLG foam offers excellent electrical conductivity, an appropriate hierarchical pore structure for containing the electro-active sulphur and facilitates rapid electron/ion transport. This cathode system does not require any additional binding agents, conductive additives or a separate metallic current collector thus decreasing the weight of the cathode by typically ∼20-30 wt%. A Li-S battery with the sulphur-FLG foam cathode shows good electrochemical stability and high rate discharge capacity retention for up to 400 discharge/charge cycles at a high current density of 3200 mA g(-1). Even after 400 cycles the capacity decay is only ∼0.064% per cycle relative to the early (e.g. the 5th cycle) discharge capacity, while yielding an average columbic efficiency of ∼96.2%. Our results indicate the potential suitability of graphene foam for efficient, ultra-light and high-performance batteries.

The configurations, stability, and electronic structure of AuSin (n = 1-16) clusters have been investigated within the framework of the density functional theory at the B3PW91/LanL2DZ and PW91/DNP levels. The results show that the Au atom begins to occupy the interior site for cages as small as Si-11 and for Si-12 the Au atom completely falls into the interior site forming Au@Si-12 cage. A relatively large embedding energy and small HOMO-LUMO gap are also found for this Au@Si-12 structure indicating enhanced chemical activity and good electronic transfer properties. All these make Au@Si-12 attractive for cluster-assembled materials.

Proton-conducting membranes were prepared by polymerization of microemulsions consisting of surfactant-stabilized protic ionic liquid (PIL) nanodomains dispersed in a polymerizable oil, a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile. The obtained PIL-based polymer composite membranes are transparent and flexible even though the resulting vinyl polymers are immiscible with PIL cores. This type of composite membranes have quite a good thermal stability, chemical stability, tunability, and good mechanical properties. Under nonhumidifying conditions, PIL-based membranes show a conductivity up to the order of 1 x 10(-1) S/cm at 160 degrees C, due to the well-connected PIL nanochannels preserved in the membrane. This type of polymer conducting membranes have potential application in high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells.

A series of hydrogenated silicon films near the threshold of crystallinity was prepared by very high frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (VHF-PECVD) from a mixture of SiH4 diluted in H, The effect of hydrogen dilution ratios R-H = [H-2]/[SiH4] on microstructure of the films was investigated. Photoelectronic properties and stability of the films were studied as a function of crystalline fraction. The results show that more the crystalline volume fraction in the silicon films, the higher mobility life-time product (mu tau), better the stability and lower the photosensitivity. Those diphasic films contained 8%-31% crystalline volume fraction can gain both the fine photoelectronic properties and high stability. in the diphasic (contained 12% crystalline volume fraction) solar cell, we obtained a much lower light-induced degradation of similar to 2.9%, with a high initial efficiency of 10.01% and a stabilized efficiency of 9.72% (AM1.5, 100 mW/cm(2)). A new regime of plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD), referred to as "uninterrupted growth/annealing" method, has been proposed for preparation of high-quality hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films. By using this regime, the deposition process no longer needs to be interrupted, as done in the chemical annealing or layer by layer deposition, while the growing surface is continuously subjected to an enhanced annealing treatment with atomic hydrogen created in the hydrogen-diluted reactant gas mixture at a relatively high plasma power. The intensity of the hydrogen plasma treatment is controlled at such a level that the deposition conditions of the resultant films approach the threshold for microcrystal formation. In addition, a low level of B-compensation is used to adjust the position of the Fermi level close to the midgap. Under these conditions, we find that the stability and optoelectronic properties of a-Si:H films have been significantly improved. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The microstructure, hydrogen bonding configurations and hydrogen content of high quality and stable hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films prepared by a simple ''uninterrupted growth/annealing" plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique have been investigated by Raman scattering and infrared absorption spectroscopy. The high stability a-Si:H films contain small amounts of a microcrystalline phase and not less hydrogen (10-16 at. %), particularly, the clustered phase hydrogen, Besides, the hydrogen distribution is very inhomogeneous. Some of these results are substantially distinct from those of conventional device-quality n-Si:H film or stable cr-Si:H films prepared by the other techniques examined to date. The stability of n-Si:H films appears to have no direct correlation with the hydrogen content or the clustered phase hydrogen concentration. The ideal n-Si:H network with high stability and low defect density is perhaps not homogeneous. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.
