This chapter explores the roles and functions of both digital creative workers and creative services firms in an industry beyond the core creative industries: banking. The chapter focuses on the design and development of apps and mobile websites for smartphones and tablet computers, with examples drawn principally from the Australian banking sector. While it might be assumed that utility and practicality are more critical and more highly valued in apps development for financial services institutions than innovation and aesthetic design, this chapter illustrates the growing importance placed on creative work in this sector.

Located at the intersection of two vulnerable groups in the contemporary labour market, young people who migrate as refugees during adolescence face a unique constellation of opportunities and challenges that shape their employment trajectories. Yet the tendency for research to focus on the early years of refugee settlement means that we have an inadequate understanding the factors that mediate their employment decisions, experiences and outcomes. Based on interviews with 51 young people, this article explores how aspirations, responsibilities, family, education and networks are understood to influence the employment trajectories of adolescent refugee migrants. While this article draws attention to the complex and dynamic range of challenges and constraints that these young people negotiate in the pursuit of satisfying and sustainable employment, what also emerges is an optimistic and determined cohort who, even as they at times unsuccessfully prepare for and navigate the labour market, maintain high hopes for a better life.

In 1992 the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Convocation initiated the Mentor Scheme to assist students to better prepare for the transition to employment. The scheme has developed over the past six years and in 1998 more than 130 pairs of employers and students from 12 different disciplines participated in it. Evaluations indicate the positive impact the scheme has made on both mentors and mentees, particularly in enhancing mentees' career development.

This study used prospective birth cohort data to analyse the relationship between peer aggression at 14 years of age and educational and employment outcomes at 17 years (N = 1091) and 20 years (N = 1003). Participants from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) study were divided into mutually exclusive categories of peer aggression. Involvement in peer aggression was reported by 40.2% (10.1% victims; 21.4% perpetrators; 8.7% victim–perpetrators) of participants. Participants involved in any form of peer aggression were less likely to complete secondary school. Perpetrators and victim–perpetrators of peer aggression were more likely to be in the ‘No Education, Employment or Training’ group at 20 years of age. This association was explained by non-completion of secondary school. These findings demonstrate a robust association between involvement in peer aggression and non-completion of secondary school, which in turn was associated with an increased risk of poor educational and employment outcomes in early adulthood.

[Excerpt] The Commonwealth Minister for Family and Community Services, through the Department of Family and Community Services, funds disability services in each State and Territory. This funding provides access for people with a disability to vocational programs and employment opportunities, promotes economic and social participation and choice in work and community life. Information is collected each year from services in receipt of funding. This report, the fourth in the series, contains the findings from the 1998 Commonwealth Disability Services Census and covers all Commonwealth funded employment, print disability, advocacy, and information services. The collection provides information to assist in the planning, development and management of Commonwealth disability programs and enables the Commonwealth to fulfil its reporting obligations under the Commonwealth/State Disability Agreement.

Due to the improved prognosis of many forms of cancer, an increasing number of cancer survivors are willing to return to work after their treatment. It is generally believed, however, that people with cancer are either unemployed, stay at home, or retire more often than people without cancer. This study investigated the problems that cancer survivors experience on the labour market, as well as the disease-related, sociodemographic and psychosocial factors at work that are associated with the employment and work ability of cancer survivors. The impact of cancer on employment was studied combining the data of Finnish Cancer Registry and census data of the years 1985, 1990, 1995 or 1997 of Statistics Finland. There were two data sets containing 46 312 and 12 542 people with cancer. The results showed that cancer survivors were slightly less often employed than their referents. Two to three years after the diagnosis the employment rate of the cancer survivors was 9% lower than that of their referents (64% vs. 73%), whereas the employment rate was the same before the diagnosis (78%). The employment rate varied greatly according to the cancer type and education. The probability of being employed was greater in the lower than in the higher educational groups. People with cancer were less often employed than people without cancer mainly because of their higher retirement rate (34% vs. 27%). As well as employment, retirement varied by cancer type. The risk of retirement was twofold for people having cancer of the nervous system or people with leukaemia compared to their referents, whereas people with skin cancer, for example, did not have an increased risk of retirement. The aim of the questionnaire study was to investigate whether the work ability of cancer survivors differs from that of people without cancer and whether cancer had impaired their work ability. There were 591 cancer survivors and 757 referents in the data. Even though current work ability of cancer survivors did not differ between the survivors and their referents, 26% of cancer survivors reported that their physical work ability, and 19% that their mental work ability had deteriorated due to cancer. The survivors who had other diseases or had had chemotherapy, most often reported impaired work ability, whereas survivors with a strong commitment to their work organization, or a good social climate at work, reported impairment less frequently. The aim of the other questionnaire study containing 640 people with the history of cancer was to examine extent of social support that cancer survivors needed, and had received from their work community. The cancer survivors had received most support from their co-workers, and they hoped for more support especially from the occupational health care personnel (39% of women and 29% of men). More support was especially needed by men who had lymphoma, had received chemotherapy or had a low education level. The results of this study show that the majority of the survivors are able to return to work. There is, however, a group of cancer survivors who leave work life early, have impaired work ability due to their illness, and suffer from lack of support from their work place and the occupational health services. Treatment-related, as well as sociodemographic factors play an important role in survivors' work-related problems, and presumably their possibilities to continue working.

The Master’s thesis is qualitative research based on interviews of 15 Chinese immigrants to Finland in order to provide a sociological perspective of the migration experience through the eyes of Chinese immigrants in the Finnish social welfare context. This research is mainly focused upon four crucial aspects of life in the settlement process: housing, employment, access to health care and child care. Inspired by Allardt’s theoretical framework ‘Having, Loving and Being’, social relationships and individual satisfaction are examined in the case of Chinese interviewees dealing with the four life aspects. Finland was not perceived as an attractive migration destination for most Chinese interviewees in the beginning. However, with longer residence in Finland, the Finnish social welfare system gradually became a crucial appealing factor in their permanent settlement in Finland. And meanwhile, social responsibility of attending their old parents in China, strong feelings of being isolated in Finland, and insufficient integration into the Finnish society were influential factors for their decision of returning to China. Social relationships with personal friends, migration brokers, schools, employers and family relatives had great influences in the four life aspects of Chinese immigrants in Finland. The social relationship with the Finnish social welfare sector is supportive to Chinese immigrants, but Chinese immigrants do not heavily rely on Finnish social protection. The housing conditions were greatly improved over time while the upward mobility in the Finnish labour market was not significant among Chinese immigrants. All Chinese immigrants were satisfied with their current housing by the time I interviewed them while most of them had subjective feelings of being alienated in the Finnish labour market, which seriously prevented them from integrating into the Finnish society. In general, Chinese immigrants were satisfied with the low cost of accessing the Finnish public health care services and affordable Finnish child day care services and financial subsidies for children from the Finnish social welfare sector. This research also suggests that employment is the central basis in well-being. Support from the Finnish social welfare sector can improve the satisfaction levels among immigrants, especially when it mitigates the effects of low-paid employment. As well, my empirical study of Chinese immigrants in Finland shows that Having (needs for materials), Loving (needs for social relations) and Being (needs for social integration) are all involved in the four concrete aspects (housing, employment, access to health care and child care).

1) Executive Summary
Legislation (Autism Act NI, 2011), a cross-departmental strategy (Autism Strategy 2013-2020) and a first action plan (2013-2016) have been developed in Northern Ireland in order to support individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) without a prior thorough baseline assessment of need. At the same time, there are large existing data sets about the population in NI that had never been subjected to a secondary data analysis with regards to data on ASD. This report covers the first comprehensive secondary data analysis and thereby aims to inform future policy and practice.
Following a search of all existing, large-scale, regional or national data sets that were relevant to the lives of individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Northern Ireland, extensive secondary data analyses were carried out. The focus of these secondary data analyses was to distill any ASD related data from larger generic data sets. The findings are reported for each data set and follow a lifespan perspective, i.e., data related to children is reported first before data related to adults.
Key findings:
Autism Prevalence:
Of children born in 2000 in the UK,
• 0.9% (1:109) were reported to have ASD, when they were 5-year old in 2005;
• 1.8% (1:55) were reported to have ASD, when they were 7-years old in 2007;
• 3.5% (1:29) were reported to have ASD, when they were 11-year old in 2011.
In mainstream schools in Northern Ireland
• 1.2% of the children were reported to have ASD in 2006/07;
• 1.8% of the children were reported to have ASD in 2012/13.

Economic Deprivation:
• Families of children with autism (CWA) were 9%-18% worse off per week than families of children not on the autism spectrum (COA).
• Between 2006-2013 deprivation of CWA compared to COA nearly doubled as measured by eligibility for free school meals (from near 20 % to 37%)
• In 2006, CWA and COA experienced similar levels of deprivation (approx. 20%), by 2013, a considerable deprivation gap had developed, with CWA experienced 6% more deprivation than COA.
• Nearly 1/3 of primary school CWA lived in the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland.
• Nearly ½ of children with Asperger’s Syndrome who attended special school lived in the most deprived areas.

Unemployment:
• Mothers of CWA were 6% less likely to be employed than mothers of COA.
• Mothers of CWA earned 35%-56% less than mothers of COA.
• CWA were 9% less likely to live in two income families than COA.

Health:
• Pre-diagnosis, CWA were more likely than COA to have physical health problems, including walking on level ground, speech and language, hearing, eyesight, and asthma.
• Aged 3 years of age CWA experienced poorer emotional and social health than COA, this difference increased significantly by the time they were 7 years of age.
• Mothers of young CWA had lower levels of life satisfaction and poorer mental health than mothers of young COA.
Education:
• In mainstream education, children with ASD aged 11-16 years reported less satisfaction with their social relationships than COA.
• Younger children with ASD (aged 5 and 7 years) were less likely to enjoy school, were bullied more, and were more reluctant to attend school than COA.
• CWA attended school 2-3 weeks less than COA .
• Children with Asperger’s Syndrome in special schools missed the equivalent of 8-13 school days more than children with Asperger’s Syndrome in mainstream schools.
• Children with ASD attending mainstream schooling were less likely to gain 5+ GCSEs A*-C or subsequently attend university.



Further and Higher Education:
• Enrolment rates for students with ASD have risen in Further Education (FE), from 0% to 0.7%.
• Enrolment rates for students with ASD have risen in Higher Education (HE), from 0.28% to 0.45%.
• Students with ASD chose to study different subjects than students without ASD, although other factors, e.g., gender, age etc. may have played a part in subject selection.
• Students with ASD from NI were more likely than students without ASD to choose Northern Irish HE Institutions rather than study outside NI.

Participation in adult life and employment:
• A small number of adults with ASD (n=99) have benefitted from DES employment provision over the past 12 years.
• It is unknown how many adults with ASD have received employment support elsewhere (e.g. Steps to Work).

Awareness and Attitudes in the General Population:
• In both the 2003 and 2012 NI Life and Times Survey (NILTS), NI public reported positive attitudes towards the inclusion of children with ASD in mainstream education (see also BASE Project Vol. 2).

Gap Analysis Recommendations:
This was the first comprehensive secondary analysis with regards to ASD of existing large-scale data sets in Northern Ireland. Data gaps were identified and further replications would benefit from the following data inclusion:
• ASD should be recorded routinely in the following datasets:
o Census;
o Northern Ireland Survey of Activity Limitation (NISALD);
o Training for Success/Steps to work; Steps to Success;
o Travel survey;
o Hate crime; and
o Labour Force Survey.
• Data should be collected on the destinations/qualifications of special school leavers.
• NILT Survey autism module should be repeated in 5 years time (2017) (see full report of 1st NILT Survey autism module 2012 in BASE Project Report Volume 2).
• General public attitudes and awareness should be assessed for children and young people, using the Young Life and Times Survey (YLT) and the Kids Life and Times Survey (KLT); (this work is underway, Dillenburger, McKerr, Schubolz, & Lloyd, 2014-2015).

The primary purpose of the BASE Project was to establish how to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder out of poverty by promoting social inclusion. In order to achieve this, a range of methodologies were utilised that aimed to provide a baseline against which the effect of the Autism Act (NI) 2011 and the associated Autism Strategy (2013-2020) and Action Plans can be measured. The BASE Project is reported in 5 volumes. Volume 2 reports on the analysis of the autism module of the Northern Ireland Life and Times (NILT) Survey that assessed public awareness, attitudes, knowledge, and projected behaviours with regard to individuals with ASD (all primary data and technical reports are available at www.ark.ac.uk/nilt/).

The NILT (2012) survey first ever autism module (n=1204) offered a baseline against which the impact of new autism legislation, policies, and strategies can be measured. Key findings:

• 82% awareness: Most people in Northern Ireland are aware of autism (n=989).
• 50% of all participants knew someone with autism personally (n=606).

Of those who were aware of autism:
• 19% had a close family member with autism (n=186), and/or a friends/acquaintance (n=296), and/or a work colleague (n=79) with autism.
• Autism awareness was particularly low for those from ethnic minorities and those with no internet access.
• Awareness of autism specific legislation was low (20%).
• Good levels of knowledge about autism strengths and challenges, slight tendency to overestimate the occurrence of special talents.
• Prevalence of autism was underestimated (62% thought autism was much less prevalent than official figures or did not know).
• Fairly accurate perception about causes of autism, i.e., not caused by poor parenting (84%).
• Strong support for evidence-based behavioural interventions (77%), but confusion about interventions that are not evidence-based (64%).
• Strong positive attitudes towards children and adults in social, educational and employment settings.
• Autism not viewed as necessarily ‘lifelong’ (58%); support for independent living (78%), e.g., driving a car (83%).
• More business for employers who employ people with autism (12%).
• Strong support for families caring rather than residential care (64%).
• Confusion about service responsibility: education (26%) health (33%) or both (28%).

Given increasing prevalence rates of ASD it is important that the general population is aware of autism and able to respond responsibly to the associated strengths and challenges. The results of the NILT (2012) first ever autism module show that the general public was well aware of autism, had positive attitudes, and was relatively knowledgeable about the issues faced by individuals and families affected directly. However, there was a lack of clarity about responsibility for effective service delivery. The NILT results show that a shift in focus is necessary from ‘awareness raising campaigns’ to an approach that delivers clarity with regard to intervention and accountability.

This study sought to explore the changing nature of the financial services industry in Toronto, Canada and the impact that these changes will have on the vocational educational outcomes required by Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (CAAT) graduates who wish to enter the financial services industry. The study was descriptive and exploratory, based on both quantitative and qualitative data. Triangulation of 3 data sources (a collection of newspaper articles from the Toronto Star between July 1999 and June 2000, the calendars of the 25 CAATs, and a survey questionnaire prepared by me and distributed to subject matter experts who are key practitioners in the financial services industry) was used. The study contains a discussion of how the financial services industry is changing. The first question to be answered was: What do current practitioners in financial services perceive to be the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will be required of future graduates for employment within the financial services industry? The study found that Ontario CAAT's graduates entering the financial services field need both business and financial services vocational learning outcomes. Colleges should have 2 programs 1 in accounting and 1 in financial services. The report addresses which specific topics should be included in the financial services program. The second question to be answered was: How does this anticipated profile of knowledge, skills, and attitudes change depending on the degree of implementation of the new technologies by the survey respondent? The study found no pattern. The third question to be answered was: In what way do existing programs need to change in the area of accreditation as perceived by the respondents? The study found that for accreditation, 3 credentials should be addressed within the financial services program. These are the Canadian Securities, the Life Underwriters, and the Certified Financial Planner designations. The last question to be answered was: What new knowledge, skills, and attitudes need to be incorporated into college curricula to address changing needs in the employment sector? For each Ontario CAAT which has a financial services program (excluding accounting), their program was reviewed in light of the topics as perceived by professionals in the financial services industry.

Les transformations économiques visant la création d’un marché mondial unique, le progrès technologique et la disponibilité d’une main-d’œuvre qualifiée dans les pays à bas salaire amènent les dirigeants des entreprises à réexaminer l’organisation et la localisation de leurs capacités productives de façon à en accroître la flexibilité qui est, selon plusieurs, seule garante de la pérennité de l’organisation (Atkinson, 1987; Patry, 1994; Purcell et Purcell, 1998; Kennedy 2002; Kallaberg, Reynolds, Marsden, 2003; Berger, 2006). Une stratégie déployée par les entreprises pour parvenir à cette fin est la délocalisation (Kennedy, 2002; Amiti et Wei, 2004; Barthélemy, 2004; Trudeau et Martin, 2006; Olsen, 2006). La technologie, l’ouverture des marchés et l’accès à des bassins nouveaux de main-d’œuvre qualifiée rendent possible une fragmentation de la chaîne de production bien plus grande qu’auparavant, et chaque maillon de cette chaîne fait l’objet d’un choix de localisation optimale (Hertveldt et al., 2005). Dans ces conditions, toutes les activités qui ne requièrent aucune interaction complexe ou physique entre collègues ou entre un employé et un client, sont sujettes à être transférées chez un sous-traitant, ici ou à l’étranger (Farrell, 2005). La plupart des recherches traitant de l’impartition et des délocalisations se concentrent essentiellement sur les motivations patronales d’y recourir (Lauzon-Duguay, 2005) ou encore sur les cas de réussites ou d’échecs des entreprises ayant implanté une stratégie de cette nature (Logan, Faught et Ganster, 2004). Toutefois, les impacts sur les employés de telles pratiques ont rarement été considérés systématiquement dans les recherches (Benson, 1998; Kessler, Coyle-Shapiro et Purcell, 1999; Logan et al., 2004). Les aspects humains doivent pourtant être considérés sérieusement, car ils sont à même d’être une cause d’échec ou de réussite de ces processus. La gestion des facteurs humains entourant le processus de délocalisation semble jouer un rôle dans l’impact de l’impartition sur les employés. Ainsi, selon Kessler et al. (1999), la façon dont les employés perçoivent la délocalisation serait influencée par trois facteurs : la manière dont ils étaient gérés par leur ancien employeur (context), ce que leur offre leur nouvel employeur (pull factor) et la façon dont ils sont traités suite au transfert (landing). La recherche vise à comprendre l’impact de la délocalisation d’activités d’une entreprise sur les employés ayant été transférés au fournisseur. De façon plus précise, nous souhaitons comprendre les effets que peut entraîner la délocalisation d’une entreprise « source » (celle qui cède les activités et les employés) à une entreprise « destination » (celle qui reprend les activités cédées et la main-d’œuvre) sur les employés transférés lors de ce processus au niveau de leur qualité de vie au travail et de leurs conditions de travail. Plusieurs questions se posent. Qu’est-ce qu’un transfert réussi du point de vue des employés? Les conditions de travail ou la qualité de vie au travail sont-elles affectées? À quel point les aspects humains influencent-t-ils les effets de la délocalisation sur les employés? Comment gérer un tel transfert de façon optimale du point de vue du nouvel employeur? Le modèle d’analyse est composé de quatre variables. La première variable dépendante (VD1) de notre modèle correspond à la qualité de vie au travail des employés transférés. La seconde variable dépendante (VD2) correspond aux conditions de travail des employés transférés. La troisième variable, la variable indépendante (VI) renvoie à la délocalisation d’activités qui comporte deux dimensions soit (1) la décision de délocalisation et (2) le processus d’implantation. La quatrième variable, la variable modératrice (VM) est les aspects humains qui sont examinés selon trois dimensions soit (1) le contexte dans l’entreprise « source » (Context), (2) l’attrait du nouvel employeur (pull factor) et (3) la réalité chez le nouvel employeur (landing). Trois hypothèses de recherche découlent de notre modèle d’analyse. Les deux premières sont à l’effet que la délocalisation entraîne une détérioration de la qualité de vie au travail (H1) et des conditions de travail (H2). La troisième hypothèse énonce que les aspects humains ont un effet modérateur sur l’impact de la délocalisation sur les employés transférés (H3). La recherche consiste en une étude de cas auprès d’une institution financière (entreprise « source ») qui a délocalisé ses activités technologiques à une firme experte en technologies de l’information (entreprise « destination »). Onze entrevues semi-dirigées ont été réalisées avec des acteurs-clés (employés transférés et gestionnaires des deux entreprises). Les résultats de la recherche indiquent que la délocalisation a de façon générale un impact négatif sur les employés transférés. Par contre, cette affirmation n’est pas généralisable à tous les indicateurs étudiés de la qualité de vie au travail et des conditions de travail. Les résultats mettent en évidence des conséquences négatives en ce qui a trait à la motivation intrinsèque au travail, à l’engagement organisationnel ainsi qu’à la satisfaction en lien avec l’aspect relationnel du travail. La délocalisation a également entraîné une détérioration des conditions de travail des employés transférés soit au niveau de la sécurité d’emploi, du contenu et de l’évaluation des tâches, de la santé et sécurité au travail et de la durée du travail. Mais, d’après les propos des personnes interviewées, les conséquences les plus importantes sont sans aucun doute au niveau du salaire et des avantages sociaux. Les conséquences de la délocalisation s’avèrent par contre positives lorsqu’il est question de l’accomplissement professionnel et de la satisfaction de l’aspect technique du travail. Au niveau de la confiance interpersonnelle au travail, l’organisation du travail, la formation professionnelle ainsi que les conditions physiques de l’emploi, les effets ne semblent pas significatifs d’après les propos recueillis lors des entrevues. Enfin, les résultats mettent en évidence l’effet modérateur significatif des aspects humains sur les conséquences de la délocalisation pour les employés transférés. L’entreprise « source » a tenté d’amoindrir l’impact de la délocalisation, mais ce ne fut pas suffisant. Comme les employés étaient fortement attachés à l’entreprise « source » et qu’ils ne désiraient pas la quitter pour une entreprise avec une culture d’entreprise différente qui leur paraissait peu attrayante, ces dimensions des aspects humains ont en fait contribué à amplifier les impacts négatifs de la délocalisation, particulièrement sur la qualité de vie au travail des employés transférés. Cette thèse de doctorat, qui s’inscrit dans un programme de doctorat en sciences humaines appliquées, s’est d’abord construite en réponse à un problème concret, celui du roulement des infirmières et des infirmières auxiliaires dans le réseau de la santé et des services sociaux. En cours de route, il est toutefois apparu nécessaire d’élargir le questionnement à la question du rapport au travail des jeunes infirmières pour être en mesure de saisir les dynamiques sociales plus larges qui conditionnent certains choix professionnels, dont la décision de quitter son emploi. Cette thèse poursuit donc deux grands objectifs. D’une part, elle s’attarde à cerner l’ensemble des processus qui conduisent les jeunes infirmières à faire le choix de quitter leur emploi. D’autre part, elle vise à mieux comprendre comment a évolué leur rapport au travail dans le temps. La perspective théorique retenue s’appuie sur deux approches complémentaires, soit celles de la perspective des parcours de vie et de divers courants en sociologie de l’individu qui ont comme point commun d’accorder une place importante au contexte social, aux contraintes structurelles, de même qu’à l’autonomie des acteurs et à leur capacité d’agir sur leur parcours de vie. Ces approches s’avèrent particulièrement pertinentes dans le cadre de notre étude puisqu’elles permettent de rendre compte des liens complexes entre le contexte social plus global, les différents contextes de vie d’un individu et ses comportements en emploi. Elles invitent à conceptualiser le rapport au travail comme un processus qui évolue dans le temps à travers lequel plusieurs éléments de la vie d’un individu et de ses proches se combinent pour donner une orientation particulière aux trajectoires professionnelles. Vu sous cet angle, la décision de quitter se présente également comme un processus qui se construit dans un laps de temps plus ou moins long où entrent en jeu plusieurs dimensions de la vie d’un individu. La perspective adoptée dans le cadre de cette thèse permet de combler des lacunes dans ce champ de recherche où peu d’études se sont attardées à comprendre les différents processus qui façonnent le rapport au travail dans le temps et qui conduisent les infirmières à la décision de quitter leur emploi. Pour répondre aux objectifs de recherche, une étude qualitative a été menée. Des entrevues individuelles de type récit de vie ont été effectuées pour comprendre, du point de vue des participantes, comment a évolué leur rapport au travail et les processus qui les ont amenées à quitter leur emploi. Une étude de cas a été effectuée dans un centre de santé et de services sociaux de la province de Québec qui affichait un taux de roulement particulièrement élevé. L’étude visait les infirmières et les infirmières auxiliaires, groupe professionnel fortement touché par le roulement de la main-d’œuvre. Des entretiens en profondeur, d’une durée de 2h30 à 3 heures, ont été réalisées auprès de 42 infirmières et infirmières auxiliaires. Les résultats de la recherche sont présentés à travers la production de trois articles scientifiques. Le premier article, Pour une compréhension dynamique du rapport au travail: la valeur heuristique de la perspective des parcours de vie, a pour objectif de faire ressortir l’intérêt que présentent les principes analytiques associés à cette perspective dans l’étude du rapport au travail. Dans cet article, nous démontrons que le rapport au travail est le résultat d’un processus complexe où les aspirations des individus, leurs conditions concrètes d’emploi et les événements qui surviennent dans leur vie personnelle et familiale entretiennent des liens dynamiques et interdépendants qui façonnent le rapport au travail tout au long de la vie. Cet article apporte des éléments de réflexion à la question posée par plusieurs chercheurs : par quel moyen saisir ce qu’il en est du rapport au travail des jeunes? Le deuxième article, Rencontre entre l’idéaltype de travailleur et l’idéal de travail : le cas de jeunes infirmières en début de vie professionnelle, vise à rendre compte de la manière dont s’est faite la rencontre entre les attentes que les infirmières nourrissent à l’égard du travail et leur réalité concrète de travail à une période précise de leur trajectoire professionnelle, soit celle de leur insertion en emploi et des premières années de pratique. L’article démontre que trois dimensions du rapport au travail sont affectées par les nouvelles normes managériales qui prévalent dans le réseau de la santé et des services sociaux : 1) la place souhaitée du travail dans la vie, 2) la réalisation de soi par le travail et 3) le sens au travail. Cet article apporte une contribution dans la compréhension du rapport au travail de jeunes professionnelles qui exercent un métier de relation d’aide dans le contexte spécifique du réseau québécois de la santé et des services sociaux. Le troisième article, Comprendre le roulement comme un processus lié au cycle de la vie : le cas des infirmières, traite plus spécifiquement de la question du roulement de la main d’œuvre infirmière. Quatre parcours de départs sont présentés qui possèdent des caractéristiques distinctes relatives à la rencontre entre les attentes et la réalité concrète de travail, l’interaction entre le travail et la vie hors travail et la manière dont s’est construite dans le temps la décision de quitter son emploi. Les résultats démontrent que la décision de quitter se présente comme un processus qui se construit dans un laps de temps plus ou moins long, qui implique différentes dimensions de la vie d’un individu et qui est intimement lié à la quête de réalisation de soi au travail et dans les autres domaines de la vie. Cet article propose une façon d’appréhender le phénomène du roulement qui se distingue des modèles dominants qui abordent cette question à partir d’une lecture essentiellement individualisante et psychologisante des départs. La contribution de cette thèse à l’avancement des connaissances réside principalement dans le fait qu’elle appréhende autrement la question du rapport au travail et celle du roulement de la main-d’œuvre en recourant à la perspective des parcours de vie et à la sociologie de l’individu. L’approche que nous avons préconisée permet de saisir les processus sociaux et la multiplicité des éléments à prendre en considération dans l’étude du rapport au travail des jeunes infirmières et de la décision de quitter son emploi. Elle met en exergue l’importance de considérer le contexte social plus global dans lequel s’inscrit tout individu qui, dans les sociétés contemporaines, doit s’engager dans un travail de construction identitaire tout au long de la vie.

L’expansion de l’organisation de la production des biens et services sous forme de réseau, découlant de la recherche de flexibilité face à une concurrence économique accrue, soulève des enjeux importants pour les relations industrielles. Notre thèse s’intéresse au processus de précarisation des emplois dans les segments externalisés des réseaux de production. Elle se base sur trois études de cas portant sur les réseaux de services publics et privés d’aide à domicile au Québec. Les études en droit critique ont montré que le droit du travail, fondé sur le modèle de l’entreprise intégrée et de la relation d’emploi bipartite, ne parvient pas à identifier comme employeurs certaines organisations dont l’action a pourtant un effet déterminant sur les conditions de travail dans les réseaux. Notre thèse visait donc à mettre en lumière la réalité empirique des relations de pouvoir qui traversent les réseaux et leurs effets et ce à partir d’un modèle analytique transdisciplinaire intégrant les dimensions juridiques et sociologiques. Les résultats nous amènent d’abord à constater que l’employeur juridique des travailleuses employées par les prestataires privés intégrés aux réseaux – une majorité de femmes – est le plus souvent une agence de location de personnel, une entreprise d’économie sociale ou même l’usager-ère des services d’aide à domicile. Cet employeur est rarement identifié aux organismes publics, donc sous l’égide de l’État, qui exercent un pouvoir prépondérant dans ces réseaux. Le décalage entre la régulation juridique du travail et la réalité empirique du pouvoir intra-réseau entraîne une précarisation de la protection sociale et des conditions de travail de ces travailleuses. Ainsi, la faible protection de leurs droits de représentation et de négociation collectives facilite l’imposition de la « disponibilité permanente juste-à-temps », combinant les logiques du lean et du travail domestique, ainsi qu’une déqualification sexuée et racialisée de leurs emplois par rapport à la situation dans le secteur public. Notre étude montre néanmoins que certaines pratiques innovatrices d’action collective réticulaire ont pu influencer la dynamique de pouvoir, en particulier celles portées par des associations locales de personnes handicapées recourant aux services et par un syndicat de travailleuses d’agence.

Since 1999, with the adoption of expansion policy in higher education by the Chinese government, enrollment and graduate numbers have been increasing at an unprecedented speed. Accustomed to a system in which university graduates were placed, many students are not trained in “selling themselves”, which exacerbates the situation leading to a skyrocketing unemployment rate among new graduates. The idea of emphasizing career services comes with increasing employment pressure among university graduates in recent years. The 1998 “Higher Education Act” made it a legislative requirement. Thereafter, the Ministry of Education issued a series of documents in order to promote the development of career services. All higher education institutions are required to set up special career service centers and to set a ratio of 1:500 between career staff and the total number of students. Related career management courses, especially career planning classes, are required to be clearly included as specific modules into the teaching plan with a requirement of no less than 38 sessions in one semester at all universities. Developing career services in higher education has thus become a hot issue. One of the more notable trends in higher education in recent years has been the transformation of university career service centers from merely being the coordinators of on-campus placement into full service centers for international career development. The traditional core of career services in higher education had been built around guidance, information and placements (Watts, 1997). This core was still in place, but the role of higher education career services has changed considerably in recent years and the nature of each part is being transformed (Watts, 1997). Most services are undertaking a range of additional activities, and the career guidance issue is emphasized much more than before. Career management courses, especially career planning classes, are given special focus in developing career services in the Chinese case. This links career services clearly and directly with the course provision function. In China, most career service centers are engaging in the transformation period from a “management-oriented” organization to a “service-oriented” organization. Besides guidance services, information services and placement activities, there is a need to blend them together with the new additional teaching function, which follows the general trend as regulated by the government. The role of career services has been expanding and this has brought more challenges to its development in Chinese higher education. Chinese universities still remain in the period of exploration and establishment in developing their own career services. In the face of the new situation, it is very important and meaningful to explore and establish a comprehensive career services system to address student needs in the universities. A key part in developing this system is the introduction of career courses and delivering related career management skills to the students. So there is the need to restructure the career service sectors within the Chinese universities in general. The career service centers will operate as a hub and function as a spoke in the wheel of this model system, providing support and information to staff located in individual teaching departments who are responsible for the delivery of career education, information, advice and guidance. The career service centers will also provide training and career planning classes. The purpose of establishing a comprehensive career services system is to provide a strong base for student career development. The students can prepare themselves well in psychology, ideology and ability before employment with the assistance of effective career services. To conclude, according to the different characteristics and needs of students, there will be appropriate services and guidance in different stages and different ways. In other words, related career services and career guidance activities would be started for newly enrolled freshmen and continue throughout their whole university process. For the operation of a comprehensive services system, there is a need for strong support by the government in the form of macro-control and policy guarantee, but support by the government in the form of macro-control and policy guarantee, but also a need for close cooperation with the academic administration and faculties to be actively involved in career planning and employment programs. As an integral function within the universities, career services must develop and maintain productive relationships with relevant campus offices and key stakeholders both within the universities and externally.
