The problem of the co-existence of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer (Koelb.), Acanthodiaptomus denticornis (Wierz.) and Heterocope saliens Lill [Translation from: Memorie dell'Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia Dott.Marco de Marchi 8 81-94, 1954]

In freshwater environments of modest size and without notable ecological structure, there is usually present only one diaptomid species. When two or more diaptomid species are present in the same habitat, generally their body dimensions are distinctly different. There are only four examples of co-existence of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer (Koelb.) and Acanthodiaptomus denticornis (Wierz.) situated at higher altitudes alpine lakes. The article discusses the results of sampling in the summer of 1953 and the problem of the co-existence of Arctodiaptomus bacillifer, Acanthodiaptomus denticornis and Heterocope saliens.

On the number of generations of tendipes in collective ponds in Kuibyshchevskoi district [Translation from: C.R. Acad.Sci. U.R.S.S. 95, 1113-1115, 1954]

Three ponds were chosen for this study. The two lower ones were of 2 - 4 hectares in area, the depth of the littoral zone was 2.5 - 3 metres at the time of maximum flooding and the mud which covered the floor of the ponds was homogeneous and autochthonous in nature with very few vegetable remnants. The ponds which were originally set up in 1950. were intended for water supply and populated with Crucian Carp (for human consumption). A survey was done in the ponds in order to establish number and biomass of Tendipes semireductus. The author concludes that in these ponds T.semireductus has 2-3 generations per year.

This dataset provides raw data of chemical analyses made during studies on seasonal variations of 25 frequently sampled tarns in Cumbria. Measurements of sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium, pH, chloride ions, alkalinity, sulphite, strong acids and nitrate were taken between 1954 and 1956 and between 1974-1976.

El Musteriense de la cueva de Harregi en Aussurucq, Soule (Excavaciones: Pierre Roucher, 1954-1960)

[ES] La cueva de Harregi (Aussurucq, Pays de Soule), excavada por P. Boucher entre 1954 y 1960, contiene testimonios prehistóricos del Paleolítico medio, superior y Postpaleolítico. En este artículo se analizan las evidencias de fauna e industria lítica asimiladas al Paleolítico medio. Importantes alteraciones estratigráficas postdeposicionales modificaron la original posición topográfica de la mayor parte de los depósitos musterienses. La composición global del lote industrial y de la serie faunística recuerdan intensamente a los controlados en los niveles musterienses Cj y Cjr de la muy cercana cueva de Gatzarria. Ello hace, bien plantear la posibilidad de una antigua organización estratigráfica y arqueológica de los depósitos musterienses como la de Gatzarria, lamentablemente perturbada por serios procesos hídricos erosivos, bien contemplar el hecho de una secuencia diferente, propia y, en cierta forma, contradictoria con la dinámica reconocida en Gatzarria.

Blue Marlin, Makaira nigricans, Movements in the Western North Atlantic Ocean: Results of a Cooperative Game Fish Tagging Program, 1954-88

Blue marlin, Makaira nigricans, tag and recapture data are summarized for 1954-1988. During this period, 8,447 fish have been tagged and only 30 (0.35 percent) have been returned. Results of the tagging program indicate that blue marlin not only travel considerable distances (7,OOO km from the U. S. Virgin Islands to the Ivory Coast of West Africa), but have remained at large for up to 8 years. Seasonal movements, however, are difficult to determine accurately.
