A forward dispersion calculation is implemented for the spin polarizabilities γ1, ⋯, γ4 of the proton and the neutron. These polarizabilities are related to the spin structure of the nucleon at low energies and are structure-constants of the Compton scattering amplitude at script O sign(ω3). In the absence of a direct experimental measurement of these quantities, a dispersion calculation serves the purpose of constraining the model building, and of comparing with recent calculations in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Using the conformal compensator superfields of N = 2 D = 4 supergravity, the Type IIB S-duality transformations are expressed as a linear rotation which mixes the compensator and matter superfields. The classical superspace action for D = 4 compactifications of Type IIB supergravity is manifestly invariant under this transformation. Furthermore, the introduction of conformal compensators allows a Fradkin-Tseytlin term to be added to the manifestly SL(2,Z)-covariant sigma model action of Townsend and Cederwall. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Starting from the well established form of the Dirac action coupled to the electromagnetic and torsion field we find that there is some additional softly broken local symmetry associated with torsion. This symmetry fixes the form of divergences of the effective action after the spinor fields are integrated out. Then the requirement of renormalizability fixes the torsion field to be equivalent to some massive pseudovector and its action is fixed with accuracy to the values of coupling constant of torsion-spinor interaction, mass of the torsion and higher derivative terms. Implementing this action into the abelian sector of the Standard Model we establish the upper bounds on the torsion mass and coupling. In our study we used results of present experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and TEVATRON limits on the cross section of new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy pp̄ collisions. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The binding energy of nuclear matter including exchange and pionic effects is calculated in a quark-meson coupling model with massive constituent quarks. As in the case with elementary nucleons in QHD, exchange effects are repulsive. However, the coupling of the mesons directly to the quarks in the nucleons introduces a new effect on the exchange energies that provides an extra repulsive contribution to the binding energy. Pionic effects are not small. Implications of such effects on observables are discussed. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We derive bounds on Higgs and gauge-boson anomalous interactions using the LEP2 data on the production of three photons and photon pairs in association with hadrons. In the framework of SU(2)L ⊗ U(1)Y effective Lagrangians, we examine all dimension-six operators that lead to anomalous Higgs interactions involving γ and Z. The search for Higgs boson decaying to γγ pairs allow us to obtain constrains on these anomalous couplings that are comparable with the ones originating from the analysis of pp̄ collisions at the Tevatron. Our results also show that if the coefficients of all blind operators are assumed to have the same magnitude, the indirect constraints on the anomalous couplings obtained from this analysis, for Higgs masses MH ≲ 140 GeV, are more restrictive than the ones coming from the W+W- production. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. We derive bounds on Higgs and gauge-boson anomalous interactions using the CDF data for the process pp̄ → γγγ + X. We use a linearly realized SU L(2) X U Y(1) invariant effective Lagrangian to describe the bosonic sector of the Standard Model, keeping the fermionic couplings unchanged. All dimension-six operators that lead to anomalous Higgs interactions involving γ and Z are considered. We also show the sensitivity that can be achieved for these couplings at Fermilab Tevatron upgrades. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A one parameter model of a confined-gluon propagator has been formulated by Frank and Roberts recently, which has a great success explaining π - and p - meson observables. We show, computing few chiral parameters, that a small variation of this model considering an infrared finite gluon propagator with a dynamically generated gluon mass, can also fit data related to the chiral symmetry breaking. This allows a direct interpretation for the unique parameter involved in the model as the gluon mass scale. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We support the idea that the baryon, B with mass MB, couples to its current with a coupling λ2 B ∼ 0.71 M6 B from an analysis of magnetic moment sum rules. And we find a sum rule among the experimental magnetic moments which is independent of the parameters of QCDSR. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We perform a self-consistent relativistic RPA calculation for the isobaric analogue and Gamow-Teller resonances based on relativistic mean field theory results for the ground states of 48Ca, 90Zr and 208Pb. We use the parameter set NL1 for the σ, ω and ρ mesons, and experimental values for the pion and nucleon. An extra parameter, related to the intensity of the contact term in the pion-exchange interaction, is crucial to reproduce the latter resonances. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. We analyze several signals at HERA and the Tevatron of a light U(1)B gauge boson (γB) coupling to baryon number. We show that the study of the production of bb pairs at the (upgraded) Tevatron can exclude γB with masses (mB) in the range 40 ≲ mB ≲ 300 GeV for γB couplings (αB) greater than 2 × 10-2 (3 × 10-3). We also show that the HERA experiments cannot improve the present bounds on γB. Moreover, we demonstrate that the production at HERA and the Tevatron of di-jet events with large rapidity gaps between the jets cannot be explained by the existence of a light γB. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. We study the effects of new dimension-6 operators, resulting from a general SU(3)C ⊗ SU(2)L ⊗ U(1)Y invariant effective Lagrangian, on three jet production at LEP and at the Next Linear Collider. Contributions to the total event rate and to some event shape variables are analysed in order to establish bounds on these operators. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Measurements of the inelastic photoproduction of charmonium at HERA have ignited a new charmonium crisis. The Color Singlet approach to computing onium production cross sections fits the data for large charmonium energy fraction z, where color octet models fail. This approach is however in qualitative disagreement with a wealth of information that exist on charmonium production by other initial states. We here suggest that the source of the discrepancy between color octet models (whether implemented in the soft color or NRQCD formalism) and data is due to the neglect of non-perturbative effects. Implementing these in a scheme originally developed for Drell-Yan phenomenology, we illustrate how agreement with the data is achieved. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Making use of a recursive approach, derivative dispersion relations are generalized for an arbitrary number of subtractions. The results for both cross even and odd amplitudes are theoretically consistent at sufficiently high energies and in the region of small momentum transfer. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Using the manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric version of open superstring field theory, we construct the free action for the first massive states of the open superstring compactified to four dimensions. This action is in N = 1 D = 4 superspace and describes a massive spin-2 multiplet coupled to two massive scalar multiplets. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
