The idea behind creating this special issue on real world applications of intelligent tutoring systems was to bring together in a single publication some of the most important examples of success in the use of ITS technology. This will serve as a reference to all researchers working in the area. It will also be an important resource for the industry, showing the maturity of ITS technology and creating an atmosphere for funding new ITS projects. Simultaneously, it will be valuable to academic groups, motivating students for new ideas of ITS and promoting new academic research work in the area.

We report on an elementary course in ordinary differential equations (odes) for students in engineering sciences. The course is also intended to become a self-study package for odes and is is based on several interactive computer lessons using REDUCE and MATHEMATICA . The aim of the course is not to do Computer Algebra (CA) by example or to use it for doing classroom examples. The aim ist to teach and to learn mathematics by using CA-systems.

These are the Introduction slides for Comp6051 Social Networking Technologies. They outline the structure of the course, and give a (very brief) overview of the topics covered.

Presentation guide for Tom and Paul - apologies for quality/lack-of-rehersal. It was only intended as a mic-check, but I got carried away.

This is the introductory slides for Comp1209 Systems Design. In the first half we explain the structure of the course, and in the second we give a brief introduction to Systems (using Bloodhound SSC as a class exercise)

Two lectures that introduce the idea of modelling in the large, and contrasts hard system and soft system modelling. The second lecture goes into detail on a number of specific methods for analysing a system (CATWOE and CSH) and on modelling a system (Systems Diagrams and Personas).

The aim of this book is to provide and introduction to microprocessor systems, their operation and design. It covers those topics needed by engineers and computer scientists who are interested in applying microprocessors in practical situations, namely computer hardware including logic and interfacing, software, in particular high level and assembly language programming, and the design and testing of such systems. The fundamental principles of micrprocessor systems are described and these are illustrated with reference to two microprocessors, the 32-bit MC68020 from Motorola and a single chip microcomputer, the 8051 from Intel; and in addition, interfacing to the general purpose STE bus is described. The details of the processors and the bus are concentrated in three chapters, thus allowing the presentation of the material to be independent of the microprocessors if that is desired, and permitting the specific details to be found easily.

Dynamical systems of the billiard type are of fundamental importance for the description of numerous phenomena observed in many different fields of research, including statistical mechanics, Hamiltonian dynamics, nonlinear physics, and many others. This Focus Issue presents the recent progress in this area with contributions from the mathematical as well as physical stand point. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics.
