Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting refractory interstitial compound possessing several unique properties. A cost-effective, efficient and non-Pt electrocatalyst based on TiC is explored and the multi-functionality of TiC towards various electrochemical reactions that are of significant interest in low temperature fuel cells is studied. Ameliorated activities towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and borohydride oxidation are observed with TiC-carbon composites. High sensitivity and selectivity towards ORR have been demonstrated with very good methanol tolerance. The charge transfer interactions between TiC and carbon seem to play a vital role in the improved activity as compared to their individual counterparts. The present study opens up a way to realize completely Pt-free borohydride fuel cell architecture.

An integrated CaF2 crystal optically transparent infrared (ir) thin-layer cell was designed and constructed without using any soluble adhesive materials. It is suitable for both aqueous and nonaqueous systems, and can be used not only in ir but also in uv-vis studies. Excellent electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical responses were obtained in evaluating this cell by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state potential step measurements for both ir and uv-vis spectrolectrochemistry with ferri/ferrocyanide in aqueous solution, and with ferrocene/ferrocenium in organic solvent as the testing species, respectively. The newly designed ir cell was applied to investigate the electrochemical reduction process of bilirubin in situ, which provided direct information for identifying the structure of the reduction product and proposing the reaction mechanism.

Mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) oxides, SrFeCo0.5Ox, SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3-delta and La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3-delta have been synthesized and prepared on yttria-stabilized zirconia as anodes for solid oxide fuel cells. Power output measurements show that the anodes composed of such kinds of oxides exhibit modest electrochemical activities to both H-2 and CH4 fuels, giving maximum power densities of around 0.1 W/cm(2) at 950 degrees C. Polarization and AC impedance measurements found that large activation overpotentials and ohmic resistance drops were the main causes for the relative inferior performance to the Ni-YSZ anode. While interlayered with an Ni-YSZ anode, a significant improvement in the electrochemical performance was observed. in particular, for the SrFeCo0.5Ox oxide interlayered Ni-YSZ anode, the maximum power output reaches 0.25 W/cm2 on CH,, exceeding those of both SrFeCo0.5Ox and the Ni-YSZ, as anodes alone. A synergetic effect of SrFeCo0.5Ox and the Ni-YSZ has been observed. Future work is needed to examine the long-term stability of MIEC oxide electrodes under a very reducing environment. An anode structure based on Ti mesh has been developed for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This new anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition of a ~ 3 µ m PtRu catalyst layer on ~ 50 µ m Ti mesh. It has a thinner structure compared to that of a porous carbon-based conventional anode. The Ti mesh anode shows a performance comparable to, and exceeding that, of the conventional anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen at 90 C. However, it shows a lower performance of the cell when higher concentrations of methanol was employed. This may be attributed to its thin and open structure, which could facilitate the transport of methanol from the flow field to the anode catalyst layer and carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. © 2006 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

A preliminary investigation of electrocatalytic oxidation activity ofbutanol isomers has been carried out to study their potential asfuels for direct alcohol fuel cells. The electrochemical study wascarried out on Pt and Pd electrodes using a three electrode cell setup in alkaline media. The primary alcohol isomers of butanol wereobserved to behave similarly in their electrochemical reactionswhereas 2-butanol showed completely different oxidation featureson both catalysts. For example, no poisoning effects were observedfor 2- butanol unlike for the primary butanol isomers. In contrast,tert-butanol did not show any oxidation reaction on Pt and Pdelectrodes. Furthermore, Pd was not active at all in acidic mediafor butanol oxidation. The reactivity of butanol isomers were foundto be in the order n-butanol>iso-butanol>2-butanol>tert-butanolbased on the oxidation current density values.

Carbon-supported Pt-based electrocatalysts were synthesized by Pechini method for the ethanol oxidation (EOR). Physicochemical characterizations were helpful to estimate the diameters of the obtained materials ranging from 2 nm to 5 nm. Main electrochemical experiments were carried out at 90 degrees C i.e. under the working conditions of performing the single 5 cm(2) direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). Pt(80)Sn(20)/C was the anode catalyst which has given the highest power density of 37 mW cm(-2). Importantly, the IR spectroscopy measurements associated with the qualitative analysis done at the output of the anodic compartment of the fuel cell have shown that ethanol oxidation on Pt(80)Sn(20)/C was mainly a two-electron sustainable process. Cancer is one of the principal causes of death in the world; almost 8.2 million of deaths were counted in 2012. Emerging evidences indicate that most of the tumors have an increased glycolytic rate and a detriment of oxidative phosphorylation to support abnormal cell proliferation; this phenomenon is known as aerobic glycolysis or Warburg effect. This switching toward glycolysis implies that cancer tissues metabolize approximately tenfold more glucose to lactate in a given time and the amount of lactate released from cancer tissues is much greater than from normal ones. In view of these fundamental discoveries alterations of the cellular metabolism should be considered a crucial hallmark of cancer. Therefore, the investigation of the metabolic differences between normal and transformed cells is important in cancer research and it might find clinical applications. The aim of the project was to investigate the cellular metabolic alterations at single cell level, by monitoring glucose and lactate, in order to provide a better insight in cancer research. For this purpose, electrochemical techniques have been applied. Enzyme-based electrode biosensors for lactate and glucose were –ad hoc- optimized within the project and used as probes for Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM). The UME biosensor manufacturing and optimization represented a consistent part of the work and a full description of the sensor preparation protocols and of the characterization methods employed is reported. This set-up (SECM used with microbiosensor probes) enabled the non-invasive study of cellular metabolism at single cell level. The knowledge of cancer cell metabolism is required to design more efficient treatment strategies.

Platinum is the most used catalyst in electrodes for fuel cells due to its high catalytic activity. Polymer electrolyte and direct methanol fuel cells usually include Pt as catalyst in their electrodes. In order to diminish the cost of such electrodes, different Pt deposition methods that permit lowering the metal load whilst maintaining their electroactivity, are being investigated. In this work, the behaviour of electron beam Pt (e-beam Pt) deposited electrodes for fuel cells is studied. Three different Pt loadings have been investigated. The electrochemical behaviour by cyclic voltammetry in H2SO4, HClO4 and in HClO4+MeOH before and after the Pt deposition on carbon cloth has been analysed. The Pt improves the electrochemical properties of the carbon support used. The electrochemical performance of e-beam Pt deposited electrodes was finally studied in a single direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) and the obtained results indicate that this is a promising and adequate method to prepare fuel cell electrodes.

New composite doped poly (ethylene oxide) polymer electrolyte was developed using 2-mercapto benzimidazole as plasticizer and iodide/triiodide as redox couple. The fabrication of the cell involves Poly(ethylene oxide)/ 2-mercapto benzimidazole / iodide/triiodide as polymer electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cell fabricated with N3 dye and TiO2 nanoparticles as the photoanode and Platinum coated FTO (fluorine doped SnO2) as counter electrode. The current-volatage characteristics under simulated sunlight AM1.5 shows a short circuit current Isc of 8.7mA and open circuit photovoltage 508 mV. The conductivity measurements for the new polymer electrolyte and the photoelectrochemical measurments were carried out systematically. In 2-mercapto benzimidazole the electron rich sulphur and nitrogen atoms, act as pi-electron donors that form good interaction with iodine which plays a vital role in the performance of the fabricated dye-sensitized solar cells. The resonance effect increases the stability of the cell to a considerable extent. These results suggest that the new composite polymer electrolyte performs as a promising new doped polymer-electrolyte.
