The solvation time correlation function for solvation in liquid water was measured recently. The solvation was found to be very fast, with a time constant equal to 55 fs. In this article we present theoretical studies on solvation dynamics of ionic and dipolar solutes in liquid water, based on the molecular hydrodynamic approach developed earlier. The molecular hydrodynamic theory can successfully predict the ultrafast dynamics of solvation in liquid water as observed from recent experiments. The present study also reveals some interesting aspects of dipolar solvation dynamics, which differs significantly from that of ionic solvation.

A simple but self-consistent microscopic theory for the time dependent solvation energy of both ions and dipoles is presented which includes, for the first time, the details of the self-motion of the probe on its own solvation dynamics. The theory leads to several interesting predictions. The most important of them is that, for dipolar solvation, both the rotational and the translational motions of the dipolar solute probe can significantly accelerate the rate of solvation. In addition, the rotational self-motion of the solute can also give rise to an additional mechanism of nonexponentiality in solvation time correlation functions in otherwise slow liquids. A comparison between the present theoretical predictions and the recent experimental studies of Maroncelli et al. on solvation dynamics of aniline in l-propanol seems to indicate that the said experiments have missed the initial solvent response up to about 45 ps. After mapping the experimental results on the redefined time scale, the theoretical results can explain the experimental results for solvation of aniline in 1-propanol very well. For ionic solvation, the translational motion is significant for light solutes only. For example, for Li+ in water, translational motion speeds up the solvation by about 20%. The present theory demonstrates that in dipolar solvation the partial quenching of the self-motion due to the presence of specific solute-solvent interactions (such as H-bonding) may lead to a much slower solvation than that when the self-motion is present. This point has been discussed. In addition, we present the theoretical results for solvation of aniline in propylene carbonate, Here, the solvation is predicted to be complete within 15-20 ps.

Three new cationic amphiphiles bearing anthraquinone moieties at the polar headgroup region were synthesized, The single-chain amphiphile, N,N-dimethyl-N-octadecyl-N-(9,10-dihydro dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 1, in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide upon dispersion in water gave co-micellar aggregates containing covalently attached anthraquinone residues at the polar aqueous interfaces. The other two double-chain amphiphiles, N,N-dioctadecyl-N-methyl-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxoanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 2 and N,N-dimethyl-N-(1,2-bispalmitoyloxypropanyl)-N-(9,10-dihydro-9,10-dioxanthracen-2-ylmethyl)ammonium bromide 3, however, on dispersion in aqueous media produced vesicular aggregates. The critical temperatures for the gel to liquid-crystalline-like phase transition processes for the vesicular systems were determined by following temperature-dependent changes in the ratios of keto-enol tautomeric forms of benzoylacetanilide doped within respective. vesicular assemblies. The redox chemistry of the these supramolecular assemblies was also studied by following the time-dependent changes in the ITV-VIS absorption spectroscopy in the presence of exogenous reducing or oxidizing agents, Electrochemical studies using glassy carbon electrodes reveal that redox-active amphiphiles adsorb on to the glassy carbon surfaces to form electroactive deposits when dipped into aqueous suspensions of either of these aggregates irrespective of the micellar or vesicular nature of the dispersions.

The present investigation analyses the thermodynamic behaviour of the surfaces and adsorption as a function of temperature and composition in the Fe-S-O melts based on the Butler's equations. The calculated-values of the surface tensions exhibit an elevation or depression depending on the type of the added solute at a concentration which coincides with that already present in the system. Generally, the desorption of the solutes as a function of temperature results in an initial increase followed by a decrease in the values of the surface tension. The observations are analyzed based on the surface interaction parameters which are derived in the present research.

A microscopic calculation of solvation dynamics of dipolar and quadrupolar solutes in liquid water and acetonitrile is presented. The solvation is found to he biphasic. The calculated solvation time correlation function of ionic quadrupolar solute (K+) in water is in good agreement with re cent computer simulation results. Present study reveals some interesting aspects of quadrupolar solvation dynamics which differ significantly from that of ionic and dipolar solvation.

We report a novel phase behavior in aqueous solutions of simple organic solutes near their liquid/liquid critical points, where a solid-like third phase appears at the liquid/liquid interface. The phenomenon has been found in three different laboratories. It appears in many aqueous systems of organic solutes and becomes enhanced upon the addition of salt to these solutions.

A one-dimensional, biphasic, multicomponent steady-state model based on phenomenological transport equations for the catalyst layer, diffusion layer, and polymeric electrolyte membrane has been developed for a liquid-feed solid polymer electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell (SPE- DMFC). The model employs three important requisites: (i) implementation of analytical treatment of nonlinear terms to obtain a faster numerical solution as also to render the iterative scheme easier to converge, (ii) an appropriate description of two-phase transport phenomena in the diffusive region of the cell to account for flooding and water condensation/evaporation effects, and (iii) treatment of polarization effects due to methanol crossover. An improved numerical solution has been achieved by coupling analytical integration of kinetics and transport equations in the reaction layer, which explicitly include the effect of concentration and pressure gradient on cell polarization within the bulk catalyst layer. In particular, the integrated kinetic treatment explicitly accounts for the nonhomogeneous porous structure of the catalyst layer and the diffusion of reactants within and between the pores in the cathode. At the anode, the analytical integration of electrode kinetics has been obtained within the assumption of macrohomogeneous electrode porous structure, because methanol transport in a liquid-feed SPE- DMFC is essentially a single-phase process because of the high miscibility of methanol with water and its higher concentration in relation to gaseous reactants. A simple empirical model accounts for the effect of capillary forces on liquid-phase saturation in the diffusion layer. Consequently, diffusive and convective flow equations, comprising Nernst-Plank relation for solutes, Darcy law for liquid water, and Stefan-Maxwell equation for gaseous species, have been modified to include the capillary flow contribution to transport. To understand fully the role of model parameters in simulating the performance of the DMCF, we have carried out its parametric study. An experimental validation of model has also been carried out. Sugars perform two vital functions in plants: as compatible solutes protecting the cell against osmotic stress and as mobile source of immediate and long-term energy requirement for growth and development. The two sugars that occur commonly in nature are sucrose and trehalose. Sucrose comprises one glucose and one fructose molecule; trehalose comprises two glucose molecules. Trehalose occurs in significant amounts in insects and fungi which greatly outnumber the plants. Surprisingly, in plants trehalose has been found in barely detectable amounts, if at all, raising the question `why did nature select sucrose instead of trehalose as the mobile energy source and as storage sugar for the plants'? Modelling revealed that when attached to the ribbon-shaped beta-1,4 glucan a trehalose molecule is shaped like a hook. This suggests that the beta-1,4 glucan chains with attached trehalose will fail to align to form inter-chain hydrogen bonds and coalesce into a cellulose microfibril, as a result of which in trehalose-accumulating plant cells, the cell wall will tend to become leaky. Thus in plants an evolutionary selection was made in favour of sucrose as the mobile energy source. Genetic engineering of plant cells for combating abiotic stresses through microbial trehalose-producing genes is fraught with risk of damage to plant cell walls.

A solid oxide galvanic cell and a gas-solid (View the MathML source) equilibration technique have been used to measure the activities of the solutes in the α-solid solutions of silver with indium and tin. The results are consistent with the information now available for the corresponding liquid alloys, the phase diagram and the heats of mixing of the solid alloy. When the results of this study are taken together with published data for the α-solid solutions in Ag + Cd system, it is found that the variation of the excess partial free energy of the solute with mole fraction can be correlated to the electron/atom ratio. The significant thennodynamic parameter that explains the Hume-Rothery findings in these alloys appears to be the rate of change of the excess partial free energy with composition near the phase boundary, and this in turn reflects the value of the solute-solute interaction energy.

A methodology for evaluating the reactivity of titanium with mould materials during casting has been developed. Microhardness profiles and analysis of oxygen contamination have provided an index for evaluation of the reactivity of titanium. Microhardness profile delineates two distinct regions, one of which is characterised by a low value of hardness which is invariant with distance. The reaction products are uniformly distributed in the metal in this region. The second is characterised by a sharp decrease in microhardness with distance from the metal-mould interface. It represents a diffusion zone for solutes that dissolve into titanium from the mould. The qualitative profiles for contaminants determined by scanning electron probe microanalyser and secondary ion mass spectroscopy in the as-cast titanium were found to be similar to that of microhardness, implying that microhardness can be considered as an index of the contamination resulting from metal-mould reaction.

Water-ethanol mixtures exhibit many interesting anomalies, such as negative excess partial molar volume of ethanol, excess sound absorption coefficient at low concentrations, and positive deviation from Raoult's law for vapor pressure, to mention a few. These anomalies have been attributed to different, often contradictory origins, but a quantitative understanding is still lacking. We show by computer simulation and theoretical analyses that these anomalies arise from the sudden emergence of a bicontinuous phase that occurs at a relatively low ethanol concentration of x(eth) approximate to 0.06-0.10 (that amounts to a volume fraction of 0.17-0.26, which is a significant range!). The bicontinuous phase is formed by aggregation of ethanol molecules, resulting in a weak phase transition whose nature is elucidated. We find that the microheterogeneous structure of the mixture gives rise to a pronounced nonmonotonic composition dependence of local compressibility and nonmonotonic dependence in the peak value of the radial distribution function of ethyl groups. A multidimensional free energy surface of pair association is shown to provide a molecular explanation of the known negative excess partial volume of ethanol in terms of parallel orientation and hence better packing of the ethyl groups in the mixture due to hydrophobic interactions. The energy distribution of the ethanol molecules indicates additional energy decay channels that explain the excess sound attenuation coefficient in aqueous alcohol mixtures. We studied the dependence of the solvation of a linear polymer chain on the composition of the water-ethanol solvent. We find that there is a sudden collapse of the polymer at x(eth) approximate to 0.05-a phenomenon which we attribute to the formation of the microheterogeneous structures in the binary mixture at low ethanol concentrations. Together with recent single molecule pulling experiments, these results provide new insight into the behavior of polymer chain and foreign solutes, such as enzymes, in aqueous binary mixtures.

The solubilities of various solid pollutants in supercritical carbon dioxide were investigated. The intermolecular interactions play a significant role in determining the solubilities of solids in supercritical carbon dioxide. A new model equation was derived by using the concepts of association and activity coefficient model to correlate the solubilities of solids. The model equation combines the association and Wilson activity coefficient models and includes the interaction potentials between the molecules, which are useful in understanding the behavior of the solid solutes in SCCO2. The new model equation involves five adjustable parameters to correlate the solubilities of solids by incorporating the interactions between the molecules. The equation correlated 75 solid systems with an average AARD of around 9%, which was better than the correlations obtained from standard models such as Mendez Santiago-Teja (MT) model and association model. The effect of confinement on the structure of hemoglobin (Hb) within polymer capsules was investigated here. Hemoglobin transformed from an aggregated state in solution to a nonaggregated state when confined inside the polymer capsules. This was directly confirmed using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies. The radius of gyration (R-g) and polydispersity (p) of the proteins in the confined state were smaller compared to those in solution. In fact, the R-g value is very similar to theoretical values obtained using protein structures generated from the Protein Databank. In the temperature range (25-85 degrees C, Tm 59 degrees C), the R-g values for the confined Hb remained constant. This observation is in contrary to the increasing R-g values obtained for the bare Hb in solution. This suggested higher thermal stability of Hb when confined inside the polymer capsule than when in solution. Changes in protein configuration were also reflected in the protein function. Confinement resulted in a beneficial enhancement of the electroactivity of Hb. While Hb in solution showed dominance of the cathodic process (Fe3+ -> Fe2+), efficient reversible Fe3+/Fe2+ redox response is observed in the case of the confined Hb. This has important protein functional implications. Confinement allows the electroactive heme to take up positions favorable for various biochemical activities such as sensing of analytes of various sizes from small to macromolecules and controlled delivery of drugs.

The transport of reactive solutes through fractured porous formations has been analyzed. The transport through the porous block is represented by a general multiprocess nonequilibrium equation (MPNE), which, for the fracture, is represented by an advection-dispersion equation with linear equilibrium sorption and first-order transformation. An implicit finite-difference technique has been used to solve the two coupled equations. The transport characteristics have been analyzed in terms of zeroth, first, and second temporal moments of the solute in the fracture. The solute behavior for fractured impermeable and fractured permeable formations are first compared and the effects of various fracture and matrix transport parameters are analyzed. Subsequently, the transport through a fractured permeable formation is analyzed to ascertain the effect of equilibrium sorption, rate-limited sorption, and the multiprocess nonequilibrium transport process. It was found that the temporal moments were nearly identical for the fractured impermeable and permeable formations when both the diffusion coefficient and the first-order transformation coefficient were relatively large. The multiprocess nonequilibrium model resulted in a smaller mass recovery in the fracture and higher dispersion than the equilibrium and rate-limited sorption models. The electrochemical profiles of exfoliated graphite electrodes (EG) and glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) were recorded using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry in the presence of various supporting electrolytes and Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-), Ru(NH3)(6)](2+/3+), ferrocene redox probes. In the supporting electrolytes (KCl, H2SO4, NaOH, tetrabutylammoniumtetraflouroborate, phosphate buffers), the potential windows of EG were found in some cases to be about 200 mV larger than that of GCE. The electroactive surface area of EG was estimated to be 19.5 % larger than the GCE which resulted in higher peak currents on the EG electrode. Furthermore, EG was modified with various nanomaterials such as poly (propylene imine) dendrimer, gold nanoparticles, and dendrimer-gold nanoparticles composite. The morphologies of the modified electrodes were studied using scanning electron microscopy and their electrochemical reactivities in the three redox probes were investigated. The current and the reversibility of redox probes were enhanced with the presence of modifiers in different degrees with dendrimer and gold nanoparticles having a favorable edge.
