O colono português Gabriel Soares de Sousa apresentou à corte de Felipe II da Espanha, por volta de 1587, um dos mais importantes registros sobre o Brasil quinhentista, o Tratado descritivo do Brasil em 1587, e o bem menos conhecido Capítulos de Gabriel Soares de Sousa contra os padres da Companhia de Jesus no Brasil. Esta tese apresenta uma análise da história destes manuscritos quinhentistas, examinado como chegaram até os seus formatos atuais e as suas leituras através dos tempos.

El cuestionario, además de su principal objetivo, con sus respuestas quizás nos ayude a encontrar entre nosotros puntos en común que vayan más allá de nuestros temas de trabajo y sea un aporte a futuros estudios históricos. Esperamos que esta iniciativa pueda ser otro nexo entre los ictiólogos de la región, ya que consideramos que el resultado general trascendería nuestras fronteras.

This work examines the origins and early history of the Queen's College, Cork. Designedly there is as much stress on the origins as on the early history, for it is the contention of the work that the College was something more than a legislative mushroom. It was very much in the tradition of the civic universities which added an exciting new dimension to academic life in these islands in the nineteenth century. The first chapter surveys university practice and thinking at the opening of the century, relying exclusively on published sources. The second chapter is devoted specifically to the state of learning in Cork during the period, and makes extensive use of hitherto unpublished manuscript material in relation to the Royal Cork Institution. The third chapter deals with the highly significant evidence on education embodied in the Report of the Select Committee on Irish Education of 1838. This material has not previously been published. In chapter four an extended study is made of relevant letters in the manuscript correspondence of Sir Robert Peel - even the most recent authoritative biography has ignored this material. The remaining three chapters are devoted more specifically to the College, both in the formulation or policy and in its practical working. In chapter six there is an extended survey of early College life based exclusively on hitherto unpublished manuscript material in the College Archives. All of these sources, together with incidental published material, are set out at the end of each chapter.

The thesis analyses the roles and experiences of female members of the Irish landed class (wives, sisters and daughters of gentry and aristocratic landlords with estates over 1,000 acres) using primary personal material generated by twelve sample families over an important period of decline for the class, and growing rights for women. Notably, it analyses the experiences of relatively unknown married and unmarried women, something previously untried in Irish historiography. It demonstrates that women’s roles were more significant than has been assumed in the existing literature, and leads to a more rounded understanding of the entire class. Four chapters focus on themes which emerge from the sources used and which deal with their roles both inside and outside the home. These chapters argue that: Married and unmarried women were more closely bound to the priorities of their class than their sex, and prioritised male-centred values of family and estate. Male and female duties on the property overlapped, as marriage relationships were more equal than the legislation of the time would suggest. London was the cultural centre for this class. Due to close familial links with Britain (60% of sample daughters married English men) their self-perception was British or English, as well as Irish. With the self-confidence of their class, these women enjoyed cultural and political activities and movements outside the home (sport, travel, fashion, art, writing, philanthropy, (anti-)suffrage, and politics). Far from being pawns in arranged marriages, women were deeply conscious of their marriage decisions and chose socially, financially and personally compatible husbands; they also looked for sexual satisfaction. Childbirth sometimes caused lasting health problems, but pregnancy did not confine wealthy women to an invalid state. In opposition to the stereotypical distant aristocratic mother, these women breastfed their children, and were involved mothers. However, motherhood was not permitted to impinge on the more pressing role of wife

Gabriel Urbain Fauré lived during one of the most exciting times in music history. Spanning a life of 79 years (1845-1924), he lived through the height of Romanticism and the experimental avant-garde techniques of the early 20th century. In Fauré's music, one can find traces of Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Debussy and Poulenc. One can even argue that Fauré presages Skryabin and Shostakovich. The late works of Gabriel Fauré, chiefly those composed after 1892, testify to the argument that Fauré holds an important position in the shift from tonal to atonal composition and should be counted among such transitional composers as Gustav Mahler, Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Richard Strauss, and Ferruccio Busoni. Fauré's unique way of fashioning harmonic impetus of almost purely linear means, resulting in a synthesis of harmonic and melodic devices, led me to craft the term mélodoharmonique. This term refers to a contrapuntally motivated technique of composition, particularly in a secondary layer of musical texture, in which a component of harmonic progression (i.e. arpeggiation, broken chord, etc.) is fused with linear motivic or thematic development. This dissertation seeks to bring to public attention through exploration in lecture and recital format, certain works of Gabriel Fauré, written after 1892. The repertoire will be selected from works for solo piano and piano in collaboration with violin, violoncello, and voice, which support the notion of Fauré as a modernist deserving larger recognition for his influence in the transition to atonal music. El cultivo del arroz es una de las principales actividades productivas en el Nordeste Argentino, el cual se ve afectado por diferentes plagas que reducen su rendimiento y calidad. Entre ellas, la chinche del tallo, Tibraca limbativentris es una de las plagas principales. Para su control, el uso de agroquímicos es generalizado, por su conveniencia y eficiencia. Sin embargo, el mal uso de los productos fitosanitarios está ocasionando problemas al ambiente, lo que lleva a la búsqueda de nuevas tecnologías, reduciendo al mínimo los riesgos al ambiente y a la salud humana en particular. En el presente estudio se evalúa el uso de hongos entomopatógenos como una alternativa para reducir la población de T. limbativentris. Se realizaron muestreos en diversas zonas arroceras en búsqueda de cepas nativas de hongos entomopatógenos, lográndose aislar 11 cepas de adultos de esta chinche. A través de bioensayos se evaluaron 32 cepas de hongos entomopatógenos sobre adultos y dos de ellas causaron la muerte del 100 por ciento de los mismos. Se seleccionó la cepa Ma 72 de Metarhizium anisopliae y se evaluó la compatibilidad con diversos herbicidas usados frecuentemente en la producción de arroz. Se logró producir la cepa sobre diversos sustratos en fermentación en medio sólido (FMS4), destacándose el arroz blanco quebrado, sobre el cual se obtuvo 3,8 x 109 conidios/gr de sustrato. Se evaluaron diferentes tipos de formulaciones experimentales durante 100 días y la viabilidad se mantuvo sólo bajo condiciones de refrigeración (6 °C). Se evalúo la eficiencia de diversos formulados experimentales sobre adultos de T. limbativentris en condiciones de invernáculo, logrando un control satisfactorio (entre 56 y 77 por ciento de mortalidad) a los 30 días. Se concluyó que la cepa Ma 72 de M. anisopliae sería una herramienta promisora para su empleo en el control microbiano de la chinche del tallo T. limbativentris y podrían incluirse como parte de un programa de Manejo Integrado de plagas en arroz
