The simple dialkyl oxalates are generally liquids at room temperature except for dimethyl and di-tert-butyl oxalate which melt at 327 and 343 K. The crystal structures of diethyl, di-iso-propyl, di-n-butyl, di-tert-butyl and methyl ethyl oxalates were determined. The liquid esters were crystallized using the cryocrystallization technique. A comparison of the intermolecular interactions and packing features in these crystal structures was carried out. The crystal structure of dimethyl oxalate was redetermined at various temperatures. The other compounds were also studied at several temperatures in order to assess the attractive nature of the hydrogen bonds therein. A number of moderate to well defined C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions account for the higher melting points of the two solid esters. Additionally, a diminished entropic contribution Delta S(m) in di-tert-butyl oxalate possibly increases the melting point of this compound further.

Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) catalyzed efficient oxidative cross-dehydrogenative-coupling (CDC) method for C-H functionalization of N-aryl tetrahydroisoquinolines has been explored. This user-friendly method of synthesizing alpha-aminophosphonates employs 1.1 equiv of dialkyl-H-phosphonate under aerobic condition. Formation of new C-P bonds from unfunctionalized starting materials under environmentally benign conditions provides an excellent avenue for the synthesis of biologically active alpha-aminophosphonates. The effect of gem-dialkyl substituents on the backbone conformations of beta-amino acid residues in peptides has been investigated by using four model peptides: Boc-Xxx-beta 2,2Ac6c(1-aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (1), Phe (2); Boc=tert-butyloxycarbonyl) and Boc-Xxx-beta 3,3Ac6c(1-aminocyclohexaneacetic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (3), Phe (4)). Tetrasubstituted carbon atoms restrict the ranges of stereochemically allowed conformations about flanking single bonds. The crystal structure of Boc-Leu-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (1) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn in the a beta-hybrid sequence. The observed torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to-30 degrees), beta(similar to-90 degrees, similar to 60 degrees, similar to-90 degrees)) corresponded to a C11 helical turn, which was a backbone-expanded analogue of the type III beta turn in aa sequences. The crystal structure of the peptide Boc-Phe-beta 3,3Ac6c-NHMe (4) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn with distinctly different backbone torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to 120 degrees), beta(similar to 60 degrees, ?60 degrees, similar to-60 degrees)), which corresponded to a backbone-expanded analogue of the type II beta turn observed in aa sequences. In peptide 4, the two molecules in the asymmetric unit adopted backbone torsion angles of opposite signs. In one of the molecules, the Phe residue adopted an unfavorable backbone conformation, with the energetic penalty being offset by a favorable aromatic interaction between proximal molecules in the crystal. NMR spectroscopy studies provided evidence for the maintenance of folded structures in solution in these a beta-hybrid sequences.

Backbone alkylation has been shown to result in a dramatic reduction in the conformational space that is sterically accessible to a-amino acid residues in peptides. By extension, the presence of geminal dialkyl substituents at backbone atoms also restricts available conformational space for beta and ? residues. Five peptides containing the achiral beta 2,2-disubstituted beta-amino acid residue, 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (beta 2,2Ac6c), have been structurally characterized in crystals by X-ray diffraction. The tripeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-Aib-OMe (1) adopts a novel fold stabilized by two intramolecular H-bonds (C11 and C9) of opposite directionality. The tetrapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-OMe (2) and pentapeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c]2-Aib-OMe (3) form short stretches of a hybrid a beta C11 helix stabilized by two and three intramolecular H-bonds, respectively. The structure of the dipeptide Boc-Aib-beta 2,2Ac6c-OMe (5) does not reveal any intramolecular H-bond. The aggregation pattern in the crystal provides an example of an extended conformation of the beta 2,2Ac6c residue, forming a polar sheet like H-bond. The protected derivative Ac-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (4) adopts a locally folded gauche conformation about the C beta?Ca bonds (?=-55.7 degrees). Of the seven examples of beta 2,2Ac6c residues reported here, six adopt gauche conformations, a feature which promotes local folding when incorporated into peptides. A comparison between the conformational properties of beta 2,2Ac6c and beta 3,3Ac6c residues, in peptides, is presented. Backbone torsional parameters of H-bonded a beta/beta a turns are derived from the structures presented in this study and earlier reports.

Among the mu-conotoxins that block vertebrate voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), some have been shown to be potent analgesics following systemic administration in mice. We have determined the solution structure of a new representative of this family, mu-BuIIIB, and established its disulfide connectivities by direct mass spectrometric collision induced dissociation fragmentation of the peptide with disulfides intact The major oxidative folding product adopts a 1-4/2-5/3-6 pattern with the following disulfide bridges: Cys5-Cys17, Cys6-Cys23, and Cys13-Cys24. The solution structure reveals that the unique N-terminal extension in mu-BuIIIB, which is also present in mu-BuIIIA and mu-BuIIIC but absent in other mu-conotoxins, forms part of a short a-helix encompassing Glu3 to Asn8. This helix is packed against the rest of the toxin and stabilized by the Cys5-Cys17 and Cys6-Cys23 disulfide bonds. As such, the side chain of Val1 is located close to the aromatic rings of Trp16 and His20, which are located on the canonical helix that displays several residues found to be essential for VGSC blockade in related mu-conotoxins. Mutations of residues 2 and 3 in the N-terminal extension enhanced the potency of mu-BuIIIB for Na(v)1.3. One analogue, D-Ala2]BuIIIB, showed a 40-fold increase, making it the most potent peptide blocker of this channel characterized to date and thus a useful new tool with which to characterize this channel. On the basis of previous results for related mu-conotoxins, the dramatic effects of mutations at the N-terminus were unanticipated and suggest that further gains in potency might be achieved by additional modifications of this region.

Iodination of tris(trimethylsilyl)methanethiol (trisylthiol, TsiSH) in tetrahydrofuran provides the new thermally stable alkanesulfenyl iodide iodo(trisyl)sulfane, TsiSI] as a violet solid. Iodo(trisyl)sulfane exhibits iodine-iodine contacts between pairs of TsiSI molecules in the solid state. Properties of TsiSI were studied by vibrational spectroscopy and with the help of density functional calculations. TsiSI reacts in the presence of triethylamine with the antithyroid drugs 6-n-propyl- and 6-methylthiouracil (PTU, MTU) and with N-methylmethimazole (MMI) to form unsymmetric disulfides that were investigated by means of X-ray crystallography. In the solid state, the PTU and MTU derivatives exist as hydrogen-bonded centrosymmetric dimers, whereas the MMI-derived disulfide is an unsymmetric monomer.

The significant contribution of naturally occurring disulfide bonds to protein stability has encouraged development of methods to engineer non-native disulfides in proteins. These have yielded mixed results. We summarize applications of the program MODIP for disulfide engineering. The program predicts sites in proteins where disulfides can be stably introduced. The program has also been used as an aid in conformational analysis of naturally occurring disulfides in a-helices, antiparallel and parallel beta-strands. Disulfides in a-helices occur only at N-termini, where the first cysteine residue is the N-cap residue of the helix. The disulfide occurs as a CXXC motif and can possess redox activity. In antiparallel beta-strands, disulfides occur exclusively at non-hydrogen bonded (NHB) registered pairs of antiparallel beta-sheets with only 1 known natural example occurring at a hydrogen bonded (HB) registered pair. Conformational analysis suggests that disulfides between HB residue pairs are under torsional strain. A similar analysis to characterize disulfides in parallel beta-strands was carried out. We observed that only 9 instances of cross-strand disulfides exist in a non-redundant dataset. Stereochemical analysis shows that while tbe chi(square) angles are similar to those of other disulfides, the chi(1) and chi(2) angles show more variation and that one of tbe strands is generally an edge strand.

Dialkyl succinates show a pattern of alternating behavior in their melting points, as the number of C atoms in the alkane side chain increases, unlike in the dialkyl oxalates Joseph et al. (2011). Acta Cryst. B67, 525-534]. Dialkyl succinates with odd numbers of C atoms in the alkyl side chain show higher melting points than the immediately adjacent analogues with even numbers. The crystal structures and their molecular packing have been analyzed for a series of dialkyl succinates with 1 - 4 C atoms in the alkyl side chain. The energy difference (Delta E) between the optimized and observed molecular conformations, density, Kitaigorodskii packing index (KPI) and C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions are considered to rationalize this behavior. In contrast to the dialkyl oxalates where a larger number of moderately strong C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions were characteristic of oxalates with elevated melting points, here the molecular packing and the density play a major role in raising the melting point. On moving from oxalate to succinate esters the introduction of the C2 spacer adds two activated H atoms to the asymmetric unit, resulting in the formation of stronger C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds in all succinates. As a result the crystallinity of long-chain alkyl substituted esters improves enormously in the presence of hydrogen bonds from activated donors.

Decarboxylative thioesterification of isatoic anhydrides mediated by benzyl(triethyl)ammonium tetrathiomolybdate gave the corresponding S-alkyl or S-aryl 2-aminobenzenecarbothioate derivatives at 60 degrees C. At ambient temperature, organic disulfides were reductive cleaved in the presence of tetrathiomolybdate to generate thiolate anions in situ; this was followed by attack on isatoic anhydrides to give the corresponding S-alkyl or S-aryl 2-aminobenzenecarbothioate derivatives. Additionally, it was shown that multistep reactions could be performed with tetrathiomolybdate, starting with an alkyl halide as a precursor of an alkyl disulfide, which, in turn, was used for ring opening of isatoic anhydrides.

A number of functionalized beta-amino and gamma-amino sulfides and selenides have been synthesized involving a one-pot process of ring opening of cyclic sulfamidates with `in situ' generated thiolate and selenoate species from diaryl disulfides and diphenyl diselenide using rongalite. A mild and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of cysteines from serine.

This work describes an efficient and stereoselective method for the hydrothiolation and -selenation of buta-1,3-diyne derivatives using diaryl disulfides or diselenides, respectively. In the presence of rongalite (HOCH2SO2Na) and potassium carbonate, buta-1,3-diynes undergo stereoselective addition of the thiolate or selenide anion generated in situ from diaryl disulfides or diselenides to afford the corresponding (Z)-1-sulfanyl-or (Z)-1-selanylalk-1-en-3-yne derivatives, respectively. The reaction of buta-1,3-diynes with diaryl disulfides or diselenides at higher temperature (70 degrees C) gave a mixture of monothiolation/selenation and bisthiolation/selenation products in moderate to good yields.

Itaconic acid is a bio-sourced dicarboxylic acid that carries a double bond; although several reports have dealt with the radical-initiated chain polymerization of dialkyl itaconates, only a few studies have utilized it as a di-acid monomer to prepare polyesters. In this study, we demonstrate that dibutyl itaconate can be melt-condensed with aliphatic diols to generate unsaturated polyesters; importantly, we show that the double bonds remain unaffected during the melt polymerization. A particularly useful attribute of these polyesters is that the exo-chain double bonds are conjugated to the ester carbonyl and, therefore, can serve as excellent Michael acceptors. A variety of organic thiols, such as alkane thiols, MPEG thiol, thioglycerol, derivatized cysteine etc., were shown to quantitatively Michael-add to the exo-chain double bonds and generate interesting functionalized polyesters. Similarly, organic amines, such as N-methyl-benzylamine, diallyl amine and proline, also add across the double bond; thus, these poly(alkylene itaconate)s could serve as potentially bio-benign polyesters that could be quantitatively transformed into a variety of interesting and potentially useful functionalized polymers.

Plastic electronics is a rapidly expanding topic, much of which has been focused on organic semiconductors. However, it is also of interest to find viable ways to integrate nanomaterials, such as silicon nanowires (SiNWs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), into this technology. Here, we present methods of fabrication of composite devices incorporating such nanostructured materials into an organic matrix. We investigate the formation of polymer/CNT composites, for which we use the semiconducting polymer poly(3,3‴-dialkyl-quaterthiophene) (PQT). We also report a method of fabricating polymer/SiNW TFTs, whereby sparse arrays of parallel oriented SiNWs are initially prepared on silicon dioxide substrates from forests of as-grown gold-catalysed SiNWs. Subsequent ink-jet printing of PQT on these arrays produces a polymer/SiNW composite film. We also present the electrical characterization of all composite devices. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. This paper reports an analytical method for separating, identifying, and quantifying sulfur-containing compounds in crude oil fraction (IBP-360degreesC) samples based on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with a sulfur chemiluminescence detector. Various sulfur-containing compounds and their groups were analyzed with one direct injection. 3620 peaks were detected including 1722 thiols/thioethers/ disulfides/1-ring thiophenes, 953 benzothiophenes, 704 dibenzothiophenes, and 241 benzonaphthothiophenes. The target sulfur compounds and their groups were identified based on the group separation feature and structured retention of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography as well as standard substances. The quantitative analysis of major sulfur-containing compounds and total sulfur was based on the linear response of the sulfur chemiluminescence detector using the internal standard method. The sulfur contents of target sulfur compounds and their groups in 4 crude oil fractions were also determined. The recoveries for standard sulfur-containing compounds were in the range of 90-102%. The quantitative result of total sulfur in the Oman crude oil fraction sample was compared with those from ASTM D 4294 standard method (total S by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), the relative deviation (RD%) was 4.2% and the precision of the method satisfactory.
