Two series of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics with composition Zr/Ti approximate to 53/47 have been prepared by the organic solution route. The effects on the electrical properties of calcination temperature in one series and of sintering time period in the other were examined. Dielectric constant, electrical conductivity and impedance spectroscopy results differed from one series to the other, probably due to differences in structure of the precursor powders, as seen by X-ray diffraction. Tetragonal and rhombohedral phases predominate in the powders used, respectively, in the calcined and sintered series. Physical and electrical behavior of ceramics prepared from predominantly rhombohedral powder suggests the evaporation of PbO. The presence of two semi-circles in impedance plots leads to the association of the low frequency semi-circle to the presence of PbO, which, apparently, was not eliminated from ceramics prepared from predominantly tetragonal powder. PLZT(9/65/35) obtained by association between the Pechini method (ZT) and partial oxalate (PLZT) was prepared. The stoichiometric phase and monophasic (cubic) PLZT obtained by calcination did not occur after sintering. The sintering process, by using two stages, caused a liquid phase formation due to a PbO excess (5 and 10 wt%). Samples with high density (similar to 8 g/cm(3)) and optical transparency(similar to 12%) were obtained. However, an equilibrium between the excess of PbO of sample/atmosphere PbO leads to a segregated PbO phase on the boundaries of the microstructure. A diffusion of Zr, Ti and La ions from PLZT to PbO phase promoted a stoichiometric deviation of the matrix and modified the optical and dielectric characteristics. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Pechini's method was used to prepare lead titanate zirconate with Zr/Ti ratio equal to 53/47. X-ray diffraction data revealed the presence of a rhombohedral phase, rich in zirconium, due to difference in carbonate stabilities, in PZT ceramics calcined at 600 degrees C. Infrared spectroscopy presented COO- bonds in the 1400 cm(-1) region, which disappeared after calcining at 700 degrees C. Seeds with rhombohedral (PZT 57/43) or tetragonal structure (PZT 45/55) were added to the precursor. The microstructure was differentially influenced by the nature of seed particles. Rhombohedral nuclei promoted preferential crystallization of lead zirconate. This heterogeneity directly reflected on values of k(p) and d(33). (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Limited and Techna S.r.l. Crack-free polycrystalline PLZT (Pb,a)(Zr,Ti)O-3 thin films with the perovskite structure were prepared by dir-coating using the Pechinis process. Lead acetate, hydrated lanthanum carbonate, zirconium n-propoxide and titanium isopropoxide were used as raw materials. The viscosity of the solution was adjusted in the range of 20 to 56 cP and the films were deposited by a dip-coating process on silicon (100) as substrate. Solutions with ionic concentration of 0.1 and 0.2 M were used. Thin film deposition was accomplished by dipping the substrates in the solution with control of withdrawal speed from 5 to 20 mm/min. The thin films were thermally treated in two steps: at 300 degreesC amid 650 degreesC. The influence of withdrawal speed. viscosity, heating rate and ionic concentration on the morphology of PLZT thin film was discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lead zirconate titanate powder, with Zr/Ti ratio of 50/50 was prepared by Pechini method after adding up to 10,0 mol% of Ba +2 and Sr +2 ions. Tetragonal phase is favored by the increase of barium and strontium concentration in the LiNbO 3 crystal lattice. The ratio c/a for tetragonal phase increases with the content of Ba +2 and Sr +2.

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) was synthesized at the ratio of Zr/Ti=52/48 using two synthesis methods: the polymeric precursor method (PPM) and the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method (MAHM). The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), particle size distribution by sedimentation, hysteresis measurements and photoluminescence (PL). The results showed that PZT powders are composed of tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. Different particle sizes and morphologies were obtained depending upon the synthesis method. From the hysteresis loop verified that PZT powders synthesized by the PPM have a typical loop of ferroelectric material and are more influenced by spatial charges while particles synthesized by the MAHM have a hysteresis loop similar to paraelectric material and are less influenced by spatial charges. Both samples showed PL behavior in the green region (525 nm) whereas the sample synthesized by the PPM showed higher intensity in spectra. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Lead zirconate titanate, with Zr/Ti ratio of 53/47 was prepared by the polymeric precursor method. It was investigated the barium (II) modification at 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 mol% in substitution to the lead (II) cation in A site of perovskite structure. The powder samples were characterized by XRD and the diffraction patterns were used to Rietveld refinement. The percentages of tetragonal and rhombohedral phases and a systematic study of the effect of barium (II) on the morphology and the dielectric properties of PZT were carried out. The results showed that the tetragonal phase is favored and the ceramic density is improved with the barium (II) insertion. The Curie temperature (Tc) is increased besides the slight reduction of dielectric constant (Kc).

A new and simple criterion with which to quantitatively predict the glass forming ability (GFA) of metallic alloys is proposed. It was found that the critical cooling rate for glass formation (R-C) correlates well with a proper combination of two factors, the minimum topological instability (lambda(min)) and the Delta h parameter, which depends on the average work function difference (Delta phi) and the average electron density difference (Delta n(ws)(1/3)) among the constituent elements of the alloy. A correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.76 was found between R-c and the new criterion for 68 alloys in 30 different metallic systems. The new criterion and the Uhlmann's approach were used to estimate the critical amorphous thickness (Z(C)) of alloys in the Cu-Zr system. The new criterion underestimated R-C in the Cu-Zr system, producing predicted Z(C) values larger than those observed experimentally. However, when considering a scale factor, a remarkable similarity was observed between the predicted and the experimental behavior of the GFA in the binary Cu-Zr. When using the same scale factor and performing the calculation for the ternary Zr-Cu-Al, good agreement was found between the predicted and the actual best GFA region, as well as between the expected and the observed critical amorphous thickness. Major and minor (Mn, Sr, Ba, V, Cr, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Zr, Y, Sc) elements and mineralogic compositions were determined on bulk sediments collected during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 135. Three classes of sediment samples from holes drilled in the Lau Basin are discriminated by mineralogy and major element data. Samples labeled Class 1 are significantly enriched in biogenic calcite and occur predominantly in the northern part of the basin (Sites 834-835), whereas those of Class 3 are mostly enriched in volcanogenic material and are predominant in the central part of the basin (Sites 836-839). The minor element composition records the effects of the hydrothermal activity on the sediments. In the northern area of the basin (Sites 834-835), sedimentation is characterized by higher accumulation rates of the carbonate and hydrothermal fractions. These sediments are probably reworked predominantly, transported in the water column, and then settled locally. Thus, ponded sediments are probably responsible to this high accumulation rates. Diagenetic processes altered the volcanic material to a grade corresponding to the stability of phillipsite. In the central area of the basin (Sites 836-839), sedimentation is characterized by the action of bottom currents preferentially reworking the carbonate and hydrothermal fractions. Volcanogenic accumulation rates are greater at these sites than in the northern Lau Basin. Alteration of volcanic material is more important deeper in the holes and records authigenesis of clay rich in Fe-Mg, most likely smectite. Locally, clay minerals have apparently incorporated Cr and other ore-forming elements.

Leg 65 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project successfully recovered basalts from four sites in the mouth of the Gulf of California, thus completing a transect begun during Leg 64 from the continental margin of Baja California to the east side of the East Pacific Rise (EPR). Sixty-three whole-rock samples from Sites 482, 483, and 485 have been analyzed by X-ray fluorescence techniques, and a further eleven samples by instrumental neutron-activation techniques, in order to assess magma variability within and between sites. Although the major element compositions and absolute hygromagmatophile (HYG) element abundances are quite variable, all of the basalts are subalkaline tholeiites exhibiting strong more-HYG element (e.g., Rb, La, Nb, Ta) depletion (LaN/YbN ~ 0.4; Nb/Zr ~ 0.02; Ba/Zr ~ 0.23; Th/Hf ~ 0.05). These ratios, together with La/Ta ratios of 20 and Th/Ta ratios of 1.25, demonstrate that the Leg 65 basalts resemble the depleted "N-type" ocean ridge basalts recovered from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) at 22 °N and other sections of the EPR. Zr/Ti, Zr/Y, and La/Yb ratios increase with increasing fractionation. It is clear that the basalts recovered from Sites 482, 483, and 485 were all derived from a compositionally similar source and that the compositional differences observed between lithological units can be explained by varying degrees of open system fractional crystallization (magma mixing) in subridge magma chambers. The basaltic rocks recovered from Site 474 near the margin of Baja California, and Sites 477, 478, and 481 in the Guaymas Basin, all drilled during Leg 64, have consistently higher Th/Hf, La/Sm, Zr/Ti, and Zr/Y ratios and higher absolute Sr contents than the Leg 65 basalts. While some of these variations may be explained by different conditions of partial melting, it is considered more likely that the mantle source underlying the Guaymas Basin is chemically distinct from that feeding the EPR at the mouth of the Gulf. These source variations probably reflect the complex tectonic setting of the Gulf of California, the magmas formed at the inception of spreading and in the central part of the Gulf containing a minor but significant component of sub-continental (calc-alkaline) material.

Chemical compositions and 1-atm. phase relations were determined for basalts drilled from Holes 501, 504A, 504B, 505, and 505B on Legs 68, 69, and 70 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Chemical, experimental, and petrographic data indicate that these basalts are moderately evolved (Mg' values from 0.60 to 0.70), with olivine plus Plagioclase and often clinopyroxene on the liquidus. Chemical stratigraphy was used to infer that sequential influxes of magma into a differentiating magma chamber or separate flows from different magma chambers or both had occurred. Two major types of basalt were found to be inter layered: Group M, a rarely occurring type with major element chemistry and magmaphile element abundances within the range of the majority of ocean-floor basalts (TiO2 = 1.3%, Na2O 2.5%, Zr = 103 ppm, Nb = 2.5 ppm, and Y = 31 ppm); and Group D, a highly unusual series of basalt compositions that exhibit much lower magmaphile element abundances (TiO2 = 0.75-1.2%, Na2O = 1.7-2.3%, Zr = 34-60 ppm, Nb = 0.5-1.2 ppm, and Y = 16-27 ppm). The liquidus temperatures of the Group D basalts are high (1230- 1260°C) compared with those of other ocean-floor basalts of similar Mg' values. They have high CaO/Na2O ratios (5-8) and are calculated to be in equilibrium with unusually calcic Plagioclase (An78-84). The two basalt groups cannot be related by fractionation processes. However, constant Zr/Nb ratios (>40) for the two groups suggest a single mantle source, with differences in magmaphile element abundances and other element ratios (e.g., Zr/Ti, Zr/Y, Ce/Yb) arising through sequential melting of the same source. Magmas similar to Group D, if mixed with more typical mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) magmas in shallow magma chambers, could provide a source for the highly calcic Plagioclase phenocrysts that appear in more common (i.e., less depleted) phyric ocean-floor basalts.
