The memoir was written between 1899 and 1918. Family history going back to the early 18th century. Recollection of the author's childhood in Hildesheim. Moritz was the youngest child of Joseph and Bena Guedemann. Early death of his father in 1847. Moritz attended the Jewish elementary school prior to the age of five. In 1843 he was enrolled in the episcopal "Josephinum Gymnasium", where he was the only Jewish student in the entire school. He had friendly relationships with students and teachers and was not confronted with antisemitism during his school years. Moritz Guedemann graduated in 1853 and enrolled in the newly established Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau. Description of teachers and colleagues in the seminary. Doctorate in 1858 and continuation of rabbinic studies. Occasional invitation to preach at the high holidays in Berlin, where Moritz got acquainted with the famous rabbi Dr. Michael Sachs. Position as a rabbi in Magdeburg in 1862. Small publications of studies in Jewish history. Engagement with Fanny Spiegel. In 1863 Moritz and Fanny Guedemann got married. Offer to succeed rabbi Michael Sachs in Berlin. Division and intrigues in the Jewish community and withdrawing from the position. Invitation to give a sermon in Vienna. In 1866 Moritz Guedemann was nominated to succeed rabbi Mannheimer at the Leopoldstadt synagogue in Vienna. Austro-Prussian war and defeat of Austria in Koeniggraetz. Initial difficulties and cultural differences. Criticism toward his orthodox conduct in the Vienna Jewish press ("Neuzeit"). Cultural life in Vienna. Welfare institutions and philanthropists. Difference within the Jewish community. Crash of the stock exchange and rise of antisemitism. Publication of sermons and studies in Jewish history. In 1891 Max Guedemann became chief rabbi of Vienna. Material documents almost every significant event in contemporary Jewish history; focusing primarily on events occurring in Israel, United states, and Russia. Among the areas of interest include Jewish homosexual rights, disabled rights, Orthodox feminism, African-American and Jewish relations, interfaith relations, Holocuast remembrance, and the marketing of Jewish filmmakers, writers, sculptors, painters, and musicians.

Contains Board of Directors minutes (1903, 1907), Executive Committee minutes (1907), Removal Committee minutes (1903-1917), Annual Reports (1910, 1913), Monthly Reports (1901-1919), Monthly Bulletins (1914-1915), studies of those removed, Bressler's "The Removal Work, Including Galveston," and several papers relating to the IRO and immigration. Financial papers include a budget (1914), comparative per capita cost figures (1909-1922), audits (1915-1918), receipts and expenditures (1918-1922), investment records, bank balances (1907-1922), removal work cash book (1904-1911), office expenses cash account (1903-1906), and the financial records of other agencies working with the IRO (1906). Includes also removal case records of first the Jewish Agricultural Society (1899-1900), and then of the IRO (1901-1922) when it took over its work, family reunion case records (1901-1904), and the follow-up records of persons removed to various cities (1903-1914). Contains also the correspondence of traveling agents' contacts throughout the U.S. from 1905-1914, among them Stanley Bero, Henry P. Goldstein, Philip Seman, and Morris D. Waldman.

Illuminating the glass box: The lighting designs of Richard Kelly

A promotional brochure celebrating the completion of the Seagram Building in spring 1957 features on its cover intense portraits of seven men bisected by a single line of bold text that asks, “Who are these Men?” The answer appears on the next page: “They Dreamed of a Tower of Light” (Figures 1, 2). Each photograph is reproduced with the respective man’s name and project credit: architects, Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson; associate architect, Eli Jacques Kahn; electrical contractor, Harry F. Fischbach; lighting consultant, Richard Kelly; and electrical engineer, Clifton E. Smith. To the right, a rendering of the new Seagram Tower anchors the composition, standing luminous against a star-speckled night sky; its glass walls and bronze mullions are transformed into a gossamer skin that reveals the tower’s structural skeleton. Lightolier, the contract lighting manufacturer, produced the brochure to promote its role in the lighting of the Seagram Building, but Lightolier’s promotional copy was not far from the truth.

Evaluación de Rhizobium tropici UMR 1899 en tres variedades de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) y la extracción de macronutrientes primarios por el cultivo

El presente trabajo fue realizado en la finca experimental La Compañía, Carazo, en época de postrera (octubre- diciembre de 1996), en suelos jóvenes de origen volcánico con altos contenidos de potasio y deficiente de fósforo. El propósito del experimento fue determinar la influencia de dos tipos de Rhizobium en tres variedades de frijol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), sobre la producción de materia seca y rendimiento, así como la extracción de los elementos mayores tales como N, P y K. Las variedades evaluadas fueron: Honduras - 46, DOR - 364 y Revolución - 79 y los tipos de Rhizobium evaluados fueron: Rhizobium tropici UMR 1899 y la bacteria nativa Rhizobium leguminosarum bv phaseoli. El diseño utilizado fue bloques completos al azar (B.C.A), con seis tratamientos y cuatro repeticiones. Las variables evaluadas fueron: altura de planta, número de nódulos, peso seco de nódulos, peso seco de cada nódulo, materia seca, densidad de plantas por hectárea, número de vainas por planta, número de granos por vaina, peso de 100 granos, rendimiento y extracciones de macronutrientes como N, P y K. Los datos se procesaren usando análisis de varianza (ANDEVA) y se utilizó la prueba de rangos múltiples de DUNCAN (Ps0.05). Los resultados obtenidos se pueden sintetizar de la siguiente forma: la variedad Honduras - 46, presentó mayor producción de materia seca en los tejidos del follaje (1563.23 kg/ha), así como también obtuvo el mayor rendimiento (1 000.51 kg/ha), la variedad Revolución - 79 obtuvo la mayor producción de materia seca en los tejidos de la raíz (117.91 Kg/ha). La variedad DOR - 364 obtuvo la mayor extracción de macro nutrientes primarios (67.12 kg/ha de nitrógeno, 6.90 kg/ha de fósforo y 60.91 kg/ha de potasio). La bacteria nativa Rhlzobium leguminosarum bv phaseoli obtuvo la mayor producción de materia seca en los tejidos del follaje y la raíz, asi como en el rendimiento y extracciones totales de macronutrientes primarios.
