[ES]This paper describes some simple but useful computer vision techniques for human-robot interaction. First, an omnidirectional camera setting is described that can detect people in the surroundings of the robot, giving their angular positions and a rough estimate of the distance. The device can be easily built with inexpensive components. Second, we comment on a color-based face detection technique that can alleviate skin-color false positives. Third, a simple head nod and shake detector is described, suitable for detecting affirmative/negative, approval/dissaproval, understanding/disbelief head gestures.

The our reality is characterized by a constant progress and, to follow that, people need to stay up to date on the events. In a world with a lot of existing news, search for the ideal ones may be difficult, because the obstacles that make it arduous will be expanded more and more over time, due to the enrichment of data. In response, a great help is given by Information Retrieval, an interdisciplinary branch of computer science that deals with the management and the retrieval of the information. An IR system is developed to search for contents, contained in a reference dataset, considered relevant with respect to the need expressed by an interrogative query. To satisfy these ambitions, we must consider that most of the developed IR systems rely solely on textual similarity to identify relevant information, defining them as such when they include one or more keywords expressed by the query. The idea studied here is that this is not always sufficient, especially when it's necessary to manage large databases, as is the web. The existing solutions may generate low quality responses not allowing, to the users, a valid navigation through them. The intuition, to overcome these limitations, has been to define a new concept of relevance, to differently rank the results. So, the light was given to Temporal PageRank, a new proposal for the Web Information Retrieval that relies on a combination of several factors to increase the quality of research on the web. Temporal PageRank incorporates the advantages of a ranking algorithm, to prefer the information reported by web pages considered important by the context itself in which they reside, and the potential of techniques belonging to the world of the Temporal Information Retrieval, exploiting the temporal aspects of data, describing their chronological contexts. In this thesis, the new proposal is discussed, comparing its results with those achieved by the best known solutions, analyzing its strengths and its weaknesses.

The human face is a vital component of our identity and many people undergo medical aesthetics procedures in order to achieve an ideal or desired look. However, communication between physician and patient is fundamental to understand the patient’s wishes and to achieve the desired results. To date, most plastic surgeons rely on either “free hand” 2D drawings on picture printouts or computerized picture morphing. Alternatively, hardware dependent solutions allow facial shapes to be created and planned in 3D, but they are usually expensive or complex to handle. To offer a simple and hardware independent solution, we propose a web-based application that uses 3 standard 2D pictures to create a 3D representation of the patient’s face on which facial aesthetic procedures such as filling, skin clearing or rejuvenation, and rhinoplasty are planned in 3D. The proposed application couples a set of well-established methods together in a novel manner to optimize 3D reconstructions for clinical use. Face reconstructions performed with the application were evaluated by two plastic surgeons and also compared to ground truth data. Results showed the application can provide accurate 3D face representations to be used in clinics (within an average of 2 mm error) in less than 5 min.

We review our recent work on protein-ligand interactions in vitamin transporters of the Sec-14-like protein. Our studies focused on the cellular-retinaldehyde binding protein (CRALBP) and the alpha-tocopherol transfer protein (alpha-TTP). CRALBP is responsible for mobilisation and photo-protection of short-chain cis-retinoids in the dim-light visual cycle or rod photoreceptors. alpha-TTP is a key protein responsible for selection and retention of RRR-alpha-tocopherol, the most active isoform of vitamin E in superior animals. Our simulation studies evidence how subtle chemical variations in the substrate can lead to significant distortion in the structure of the complex, and how these changes can either lead to new protein function, or be used to model engineered protein variants with tailored properties. Finally, we show how integration of computational and experimental results can contribute in synergy to the understanding of fundamental processes at the biomolecular scale.

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) before or after Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO) is surprisingly frequent and surgeons need to be aware of the risk preoperatively and be able to avoid it intraoperatively. In this paper we present a novel computer assisted planning and navigation system for PAO with impingement analysis and range of motion (ROM) optimization. Our system starts with a fully automatic detection of the acetabular rim, which allows for quantifying the acetabular morphology with parameters such as acetabular version, inclination and femoral head coverage ratio for a computer assisted diagnosis and planning. The planned situation was optimized with impingement simulation by balancing acetabuar coverage with ROM. Intra-operatively navigation was conducted until the optimized planning situation was achieved. Our experimental results demonstrated: 1) The fully automated acetabular rim detection was validated with accuracy 1.1 ± 0.7mm; 2) The optimized PAO planning improved ROM significantly compared to that without ROM optimization; 3) By comparing the pre-operatively planned situation and the intra-operatively achieved situation, sub-degree accuracy was achieved for all directions.

Extraction of both pelvic and femoral surface models of a hip joint from CT data for computer-assisted pre-operative planning of hip arthroscopy is addressed. We present a method for a fully automatic image segmentation of a hip joint. Our method works by combining fast random forest (RF) regression based landmark detection, atlas-based segmentation, with articulated statistical shape model (aSSM) based hip joint reconstruction. The two fundamental contributions of our method are: (1) An improved fast Gaussian transform (IFGT) is used within the RF regression framework for a fast and accurate landmark detection, which then allows for a fully automatic initialization of the atlas-based segmentation; and (2) aSSM based fitting is used to preserve hip joint structure and to avoid penetration between the pelvic and femoral models. Validation on 30 hip CT images show that our method achieves high performance in segmenting pelvis, left proximal femur, and right proximal femur surfaces with an average accuracy of 0.59 mm, 0.62 mm, and 0.58 mm, respectively.

Los nuevos títulos de grado en la Universidad española generados a raíz del proceso de Bolonia,inciden en una nueva dimensión: las competencias genéricas que deben adquirir los estudiantes universitarios. Pero ¿cómo armonizar el desarrollo y evaluación de dichas competencias con la actual actividad docente? En este trabajo se expone un modelo que permite la citada armonización con un mínimo de “ruido” y de esfuerzo complementario por parte de los docentes. En el modelo propuesto primero se hace una selección y una ordenación de las competencias que se quieren incorporar en un plan de estudios. Se hace una proyección de las competencias en los cuatrimestres y asignaturas del plan de estudios. La introducción de las competencias en las asignaturas asignadas se hace a través del diseño de actividades de formación, desarrollo y evaluación de la competencia. La segunda componente del modelo propuesto tiene por objeto coordinar las acciones que implementen la transversalidad de las competencias bajo desarrollo tanto en espacio como en tiempo. Por último, existen un conjunto de actividades destinadas a realizar el control de calidad del proceso propuesto. Este modelo se está implementado en las dos titulaciones de grado impartidas por la Escuela Universitaria de Informática de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid durante el curso 2012/13. La coordinación se ha mostrado especialmente difícil dado la falta de experie ncia y el desconocimiento en este campo y las reticencias de algunos docentes a implicarse en este proceso. El modelo demuestra varias bondades: flexibilidad, aplicabilidad, extensibilidad, universalidad,globalidad y economía. ABSTRACT: The new degrees in Spanish University, generated as a result of the Bologna process, affect a new dimension: the generic competences to be acquired by university students. But, how can we harmonize the development and evaluation of these competencies with current teaching? This paper presents a model that allows the aforementioned harmonization with minimal "noise" and additional effort on the part of teachers. The proposed model first makes a selection and organization of competences that are to be incorporated into a curriculum. The following is a projection of competences in the semesters and curriculum subjects. The introduction of competences in the subjects assigned is carried out by designing activities of training, development and assessment. The second component of the proposed model is focused on coordinating actions to implement the transverse character of competences in both space and time. Finally, there are a set of activities to perform quality control of the proposed process. This model is being implemented in two degree taught by the School of Computer Science at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid during the year 2012/13. Coordination has been particularly difficult given the lack of experience and lack of knowledge in this field and the reluctance of teachers to engage in this process.

This article examines the U.S model of library and information science (LIS) education in light of the changes brought about by information and communication technology. The accepted model of professional preparation in the United States has emphasized graduate education on a Master’s level from LIS programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The authors trace the historical development of this approach and provide an overview of the ALA accreditation process. Furthermore, they examine the strategies of LIS programs in adjusting to the changing information environment, present the debate about the iSchool movement, and discuss the evolution of the core curriculum. In addition, the article explores the relationship between LIS education and the field of practice and presents a practitioner’s perspective on educating library professionals. The authors conclude that the model of advanced professional preparation for librarianship is still relevant in the digital environment, but it requires greater flexibility and close cooperation with the field of practice.

Learning and teaching processes are continually changing. Therefore, design of learning technologies has gained interest in educators and educational institutions from secondary school to higher education. This paper describes the successfully use in education of social learning technologies and virtual laboratories designed by the authors, as well as videos developed by the students. These tools, combined with other open educational resources based on a blended-learning methodology, have been employed to teach the subject of Computer Networks. We have verified not only that the application of OERs into the learning process leads to a significantly improvement of the assessments, but also that the combination of several OERs enhances their effectiveness. These results are supported by, firstly, a study of both students’ opinion and students’ behaviour over five academic years, and, secondly, a correlation analysis between the use of OERs and the grades obtained by students.
