Nd and Pb isotopes were measured on the fine fraction of one sediment core drilled off southern Greenland. This work aims to reconstruct the evolution of deep circulation patterns in the North Atlantic during the Holocene on the basis of sediment supply variations. For the last 12 kyr, three sources have contributed to the sediment mixture: the North American Shield, the Pan-African and Variscan crusts, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Clay isotope signatures indicate two mixtures of sediment sources. The first mixture (12.2-6.5 ka) is composed of material derived from the North American shield and from a "young" crustal source. From 6.5 ka onward the mixture is characterized by a young crustal component and by a volcanic component characteristic of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Since the significant decrease in proximal deglacial supplies, the evolution of the relative contributions of the sediment sources suggests major changes in the relative contributions of the deep water masses carried by the Western Boundary Undercurrent over the past 8.4 kyr. The progressive intensification of the Western Boundary Undercurrent was initially associated mainly with the transport of the Northeast Atlantic Deep Water mass until 6.5 ka and with the Denmark Strait Overflow Water thereafter. The establishment of the modern circulation at 3 ka suggests a reduced influence of the Denmark Strait Overflow Water, synchronous with the full appearance of the Labrador Seawater mass. Our isotopic data set emphasizes several changes in the relative contribution of the two major components of North Atlantic Deep Water throughout the Holocene.

Sedimentology, mineralogy, and petrology of the pre-Pliocene sediments drilled at ODP Sites 652 and 654 in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Leg 107) have been studied with emphasis on the lower Messinian to pre-Messinian intervals. Messinian at Site 652 is essentially turbiditic and basinal in character; it was deposited during the syn-rift phase in a strongly subsiding half-graben and is correlatable with emerged coeval sequences; in part with the Laga Formation of the foredeep of Apennines, and in part with the filling of grabens dissecting that chain in the Tyrrhenian portion of Tuscany. The sequence found in Site 654 indicates an upper Tortonian to Messinian transgression accompanying crustal stretching in the western Tyrrhenian Sea and is perfectly correlatable with the so-called "Sahelian cycle" and with "postorogenic" cycles recognized in peninsular Italy and in Sicily.

Analysis of pelagic clay samples from Sites 576, 578, and 581 shows that physical, acoustic, and electrical trends with increasing burial depth are related to mineralogical and diagenetic changes. The properties of interest are bulk density (roo), porosity (phi), compressional-wave velocity (Vp) and velocity anisotropy (Ap), and electrical resistivity (Ro) and resistivity anisotropy (Ar). In general, as demonstrated in particular for the brown pelagic clay, the increase in roo, Vp, Ro, and to a lesser extent Ap and Ar with increasing depth is primarily caused by decreasing phi (and water content) as a result of compaction. The mineralogy and chemistry of the pelagic clays vary as a function of burial depth at all three sites. These variations are interpreted to reflect changes in the relative importance of detrital and diagenetic components. Mineralogical and chemical variations, however, play minor roles in determining variations in acoustic and electrical properties of the clays with increasing burial depth.

During Leg 177 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), a well-preserved middle Eocene to lower Miocene sediment record was recovered at Site 1090 on the Agulhas Ridge in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. This new sediment record shows evidence of a hitherto unknown late Eocene opal pulse. Lithological variations, compositional data, mass-accumulation rates of biogenic and lithogenic sediment constituents, grain-size distributions, geochemistry, and clay mineralogy are used to gain insights into mid-Cenozoic environmental changes and to explore the circumstances of the late Eocene opal pulse in terms of reorganizations in ocean circulation. The base of the section is composed of middle Eocene nannofossil oozes mixed with red clays enriched in authigenic clinoptilolite and smectite, deposited at low sedimentation rates (LE 2 cm/ka). It indicates reduced terrigenous sediment input and moderate biological productivity during this preglacial warm climatic stage. The basal strata are overlain by an extended succession (100 m, 4 cm/ka) of biosiliceous oozes and muds, comprising the upper middle Eocene, the entire late Eocene, and the lowermost early Oligocene. The opal pulse occurred between 37.5 and 33.5 Ma and documents the development of upwelling cells along topographic highs, and the utilization of a marine nutrient- and silica reservoir established during the pre-late Eocene through enhanced submarine hydrothermal activity and the introduction of terrigenous solutions from chemical weathering on adjacent continents. This palaeoceanographic overturn probably was initiated through the onset of increased meridional ocean circulation, caused by the diversion of the Indian equatorial current to the south. The opal pulse was accompanied by increased influxes of terrigenous detritus from southern African sources (illite), mediated by enhanced ocean particle advection in response to modified ocean circulation. The opal pulse ended because of frontal shifts to the south around the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, possibly in response to the opening of the Drake Passage and the incipient establishment of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Condensed sediments and a hiatus within the early Oligocene part of the section possibly point to an invigoration of the deep-reaching Antarctic Circumpolar Current. The mid-Oligocene to lower Miocene section on long time scale exhibits less pronounced lithological variations than the older section and points to relatively stable palaeoceanographic conditions after the dramatic changes in the late Eocene to early Oligocene.

Cyclic fluctuations in global sea level during epochs of warm greenhouse climate have remained enigmatic, because absence or subordinate presence of polar ice during these periods precludes an explanation by glacio-eustatic forcing. An alternative concept suggests that the water-bearing potential of groundwater aquifers is equal to that of ice caps and that changes in the dynamic balance of aquifer charge versus discharge, as a function of the temperature-related intensity of the hydrological cycle, may have driven eustasy during warm climates. However, this idea has long been neglected for two reasons: 1) the large storage potential of subsurface aquifers was confused with the much smaller capacity of rivers and lakes and 2) empirical data were missing that document past variations in the hydrological cycle in relation to eustasy. In the present study we present the first empirical evidence for changes in precipitation, continental weathering intensity and evaporation that correlate with astronomically (long obliquity) forced sea-level cycles during the warmest period of the Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian). We compare sequence-stratigraphic data with changes in the terrigenous mineral assemblage in a low-latitude marine sedimentary sequence from the equatorial humid belt at the South-Tethyan margin (Levant carbonate platform, Jordan), thereby avoiding uncertainties from land-ocean correlations. Our data indicate covariance between cycles in weathering and sea level: predominantly chemical weathering under wet climate conditions is reflected by dominance of weathering products (clays) in deposits that represent sea-level fall (aquifer charge > discharge). Conversely, preservation of weathering-sensitive minerals (feldspars, epidote and pyroxenes) in transgressive sediments reflects decreased continental weathering due to dryer climate (aquifer discharge > charge). Based on our results we suggest that aquifer-eustasy represents a viable alternative to glacio-eustasy as a driver of cyclic 3rd-order sea-level fluctuations during the middle Cretaceous greenhouse climate, and it may have been a pervasive process throughout Earth history.

The upper Miocene sedimentary sequence of Site 652, located on the lower continental margin of eastern Sardinia, was cored and logged during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 107. Geophysical and geochemical logs from the interval 170-365 m below seafloor (mbsf), as well as various core measurements (CaCO3, grain size, X-ray diffraction), provide a mineralogical-geochemical picture that is interpreted in the framework of the climatic and tectonic evolution of the western Tyrrhenian. The results indicate the presence of short- and long-term mineralogical variations. Short-term variations are represented by calcium-carbonate fluctuations in which the amount of CaCO3 is correlated to the grain size of the sediments; coarser sediments are associated with high carbonate content and abundant detrital material. Long-term variation corresponds to a gross grain-size change in the upper part of the sequence, where predominantly fine-grained sediments may indicate a gradual deepening of the lacustrine basin towards the Pliocene. Regional climatic changes and rift-related tectonism are possible causes of this variability in the sedimentation patterns. The clay association is characterized by chlorite, illite, and smectite as dominant minerals, as well as mixed-layers clays, kaolinite, and palygorskite. Chlorite, mixed-layers clays, and illite increase at the expense of smectite below the pebble zone (335 mbsf). This is indicative of diagenetic processes related to the high geothermal gradient and to the chemistry of the evaporative pore waters, rather than to changes in the depositional environment.

Site 1146 (19°27.40'N, 116°16.37'E) was drilled in ~2092 m water depth in a rift basin on the continental slope of the South China Sea. A total of 607 m of sediment was cored in Hole 1146A, and a composite section from three holes extends down to 640 meters composite depth (mcd). Three stratigraphic sedimentary units were recognized at this site: late Pliocene to Pleistocene nannofossil clay (Unit I), middle Miocene to late Pliocene foraminifer and nannofossil clay mixed sediment (Unit II), and early to middle Miocene nannofossil clay (Unit III). This study reports the mineralogy from the late Miocene through early Pleistocene, 150-440 mcd.

Late Miocene sediments from ODP Sites 652 and 654, drilled on the Sardinian margin in the Western Tyrrhenian Sea, are investigated through mineralogical, micromorphological, geochemical, and microgeochemical analyses. Clay associations appear to be little controlled by conditions of deposition, and largely depend on pre- and post-depositional conditions. The sedimentary series from Central Mediterranean gives very different geodynamic information, according to the sector considered. While relatively stable conditions, like those encountered in Caltanissetta Basin, Sicily, favor the mineralogical expression of warm-temperate and subarid Messinian climate, the Eastern Sardinia margin (Site 654) clay suites mainly reflect the transition from tectonically active to relaxed conditions. The series deposited at the foot of the same margin above a thinner crust (Site 652) experienced the effects of burial diagenesis, enhanced by strong geothermal gradient.

Secondary minerals in basalts from Holes 495 and 500 include smectite and chlorite, both of which have partially replaced the basalt groundmass. In addition to these two minerals, amphibole, laumontite, albite, and a corrensitelike mineral are present in Holes 499B and 499C. Smectite, chlorite, talc, calcite, phillipsite, mica, and mixed-layer chlorite-montmorillonite also fill veins in the basalts of Hole 495. The secondary mineral assemblages from Site 499 are characteristic of the initial stage of greenschist facies metamorphism.

A study of samples dredged within areas of tectonic arc-trench systems (Kermadec and New Hebrides) allows to distinguish three types of ferromanganese mineralization. Relationship between mineral and geochemical specialization is established. A conclusion is made that ferromanganese mineralization is a permanent genetic series of matter supply: from endogenic (hydrothermal solution is a dominant source at deposition of chemical elements from mixture seawater plus hydrothermal solutions) to hydrogenic (seawater is a dominant source at element deposition). This results in geochemical and mineralogical variety of ferromanganese mineralization within this part of the Pacific Ocean.

How the micro-scale fabric of clay-rich mudstone evolves during consolidation in early burial is critical to how they are interpreted in the deeper portions of sedimentary basins. Core samples from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 308, Ursa Basin, Gulf of Mexico, covering seafloor to 600 meters below sea floor (mbsf) are ideal for studying the micro-scale fabric of mudstones. Mudstones of consistent composition and grain size decrease in porosity from 80% at the seafloor to 37% at 600 mbsf. Argon-ion milling produces flat surfaces to image this pore evolution over a vertical effective stress range of 0.25 (71 mbsf) to 4.05 MPa (597 mbsf). With increasing burial, pores become elongated, mean pore size decreases, and there is preferential loss of the largest pores. There is a small increase in clay mineral preferred orientation as recorded by high resolution X-ray goniometry with burial.

Basalt samples recovered during DSDP Legs 68, 69, and 70 from a 550-meter-thick section in two holes near the Costa Rica Rift (Holes 501 and 504B) were found to contain the following secondary minerals: trioctahedral and dioctahedral smectite, chlorite, mixed-layer clays, talc, hematite, pyrite, foujasite, phillipsite, analcime, natrolite, thomsonite, gyrolite, aragonite, calcite, anhydrite, chalcocite, Fe-hydrosilicate, okenite, apophyllite, actinolite, cristobalite, quartz, and magnesite. A less positive identification of bismutite was made. A mineral rich in Mn and minerals with strong reflections at 12.9 Å and 3.20 Å remain unidentified. Trioctahedral smectite replaces glass and olivine in the basalt groundmass. The other secondary minerals occur in veins. The distribution of the secondary minerals in the basalt section shows both hydrothermal and oxidizing-nonoxidizing zonation. Most of the secondary minerals formed under alkaline, nonoxidizing conditions at temperatures up to 120° C. An acidic regime probably existed in the lowest portion of basalt. Oxidative diagenesis followed nonoxidative diagenesis in the upper part of the section. Oxidative diagenesis is characterized by the absence of celadonite, rare occurrences of dioctahedral smectite, and widespread hematite and phillipsite.

Examination of the clay mineralogy of Cenozoic sediment samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 604 and 605 on the upper continental rise off New Jersey indicates that sediment deposition of two different clay mineral facies has occurred. These sites are marked by Paleogene deposition of illite with subordinate kaolinite and smectite covarying in inverse proportion, and by Neogene deposition dominated by illite with subordinate kaolinite and chlorite. Leg 93 results agree with the clay mineral facies proposed by Hathaway (1972), which defined a "Northern facies" consisting of illite and chlorite, with feldspar and hornblende, from erosion of rocks north of Cape Hatteras, and a "Southern facies" composed of smectite, kaolinite, and mixed-layer illite-smectites. Neogene and Quaternary sediments at Sites 604 and 605 contain the "Northern facies," and Paleogene sediments contain the "Southern facies" minerals. Feldspar is exclusively found in Neogene-Quaternary sediments, as is the majority of the amphibole found in these samples. Widespread Paleogene volcanic source materials are suggested by the presence of smectite throughout the early Paleocenemiddle Eocene sediments recovered at Site 605. The clay mineral stratigraphy at Leg 93 sites is comparable to the record at nearby DSDP sites on the lower continental rise and abyssal plain of the northwestern Atlantic (DSDP Sites 388, 105, and 106), and also with the sediments recovered by drilling on the Mazagan Plateau off northwestern Morocco (DSDP Sites 544-547) in the eastern North Atlantic.
