In this paper, a method for the integration of several numerical analytical techniques that are used in microsystems design and failure analysis is presented. The analytical techniques are categorized into four groups in the discussion, namely the high-fidelity analytical tools, i.e. finite element (FE) method, the fast analytical tools referring to reduced order modeling (ROM); the optimization tools, and probability based analytical tools. The characteristics of these four tools are investigated. The interactions between the four tools are discussed and a methodology for the coupling of these four tools is offered. This methodology consists of three stages, namely reduced order modeling, deterministic optimization and probabilistic optimization. Using this methodology, a case study for optimization of a solder joint is conducted. It is shown that these analysis techniques have mutual relationship of interaction and complementation. Synthetic application of these techniques can fully utilize the advantages of these techniques and satisfy various design requirements. The case study shows that the coupling method of different tools provided by this paper is effective and efficient and it is highly relevant in the design and reliability analysis of microsystems

The investigations into structural changes which occur during adsorbent modification and the adsorption mechanisms are essential for an effective design of adsorption systems. Manganese oxides were impregnated onto diatomite to form the type known as delta-birnessite. Initial investigations established the effectiveness of manganese oxides-modified diatomite (MOMD) to remove basic and reactive dyes from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of MOMD for methylene blue (MB), hydrolysed reactive black (RB) and hydrolysed reactive yellow (RY) was 320, 419, and 204 mg/g, respectively. Various analytical techniques were used to characterise the structure and the mechanisms of the dye adsorption process onto MOMD such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption spectrometry (A.A.). A small shift to higher values of the cl-spacing of dye/MOMD was observed indicating that a small amount of the dye molecules were intercalated in the MOMD structure and other molecules were adsorbed on the external surface of MOMD. Two mechanisms of dye adsorption onto MOMD were proposed; intercalation of the dye in the octahedral layers and adsorption of the dye on the MOMD external surface. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the MOMD structure was changed upon insertion of MB and RY with an obvious decrease in the intensity of the second main peak of the MOMD X-ray pattern. Quantification of nanoparticles in biological systems (i.e., cells, tissues and organs) is becoming a vital part of nanotoxicological and nanomedical fields. Dose is a key parameter when assessing behavior and any potential risk of nanomaterials. Various techniques for nanoparticle quantification in cells and tissues already exist but will need further development in order to make measurements reliable, reproducible and intercomparable between different techniques. Microscopy allows detection and location of nanoparticles in cells and has been used extensively in recent years to characterize nanoparticles and their pathways in living systems. Besides microscopical techniques (light microscopy and electron microscopy mainly), analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry, an established technique in trace element analysis, have been used in nanoparticle research. Other techniques require 'labeled particles, fluorescently, radioactively or magnetically. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution and subcellular localization is not possible. To date, only electron microscopy offers the resolving power to determine accumulation of nanoparticles in cells due to its ability to image particles individually. So-called super-resolution light microscopy techniques are emerging to provide sufficient resolution on the light microscopy level to image or 'see particles as individual particles. Nevertheless, all microscopy techniques require statistically sound sampling strategies in order to provide quantitative results. Stereology is a well-known sampling technique in various areas and, in combination with electron microscopy, proves highly successful with regard to quantification of nanoparticle uptake by cells. © 2010 Future Medicine Ltd.

Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) following aqua regia digestion and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are both geochemical techniques used to determine ‘total’ concentrations of elements in soil. The aim of this study is to compare these techniques, identify elements for which inconsistencies occur and investigate why they arise. A study area (∼14,000 km2) with a variety of total concentration controls and a large geochemical dataset (n = 7950) was selected. Principal component analysis determined underlying variance in a dataset composed of both geogenic and anthropogenic elements. Where inconsistencies between the techniques were identified, further numerical and spatial analysis was completed. The techniques are more consistent for elements of geogenic sources and lead, whereas other elements of anthropogenic sources show less consistency within rural samples. XRF is affected by sample matrix, while the form of element affects ICP concentrations. Depending on their use in environmental studies, different outcomes would be expected from the techniques employed, suggesting the choice of analytical technique for geochemical analyses may be more critical than realised.

A novel diffusive gradients in thin film probe developed comprises diffusive gel layer of silver iodide (AgI) and a back-up Microchelex resin gel layer. 2D high-resolution images of sulfide and trace metals were determined respectively on the AgI gel by densitometric analysis and on the Microchelex resin layer with laser-ablation-inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).We investigated the validity of the analytical procedures used for the determination of sulfide and trace metals. We found low relative standard deviations on replicate measurements, linear trace-metal calibration curves between the LA-ICP-MS signal and the true trace-metal concentration in the resin gel, and a good agreement of the sulfide results obtained with the AgI resin gel and with other analytical methods. The method was applied on anoxic sediment pore waters in an estuarine and marine system. Simultaneous remobilization of sulfide and trace metals was observed in the marine sediment.

European Regulation 1169/2011 requires producers of foods that contain refined vegetable oils to label the oil types. A novel rapid and staged methodology has been developed for the first time to identify common oil species in oil blends. The qualitative method consists of a combination of a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to profile the oils and fatty acid chromatographic analysis to confirm the composition of the oils when required. Calibration models and specific classification criteria were developed and all data were fused into a simple decision-making system. The single lab validation of the method demonstrated the very good performance (96% correct classification, 100% specificity, 4% false positive rate). Only a small fraction of the samples needed to be confirmed with the majority of oils identified rapidly using only the spectroscopic procedure. The results demonstrate the huge potential of the methodology for a wide range of oil authenticity work.
