To study the complex formation of group 5 elements (Nb, Ta, Ha, and pseudoanalog Pa) in aqueous HCI solutions of medium and high concentrations the electronic structures of anionic complexes of these elements [MCl_6]^-, [MOCl_4]^-, [M(OH)-2 Cl_4]^-, and [MOCl_5]^2- have been calculated using the relativistic Dirac-Slater Discrete-Variational Method. The charge density distribution analysis has shown that tantalum occupies a specific position in the group and has the highest tendency to form the pure halide complex, [TaCl_6-. This fact along with a high covalency of this complex explains its good extractability into aliphatic amines. Niobium has equal trends to form pure halide [NbCl_6]^- and oxyhalide [NbOCl_5]^2- species at medium and high acid concentrations. Protactinium has a slight preference for the [PaOCl_5]^2- form or for the pure halide complexes with coordination number higher than 6 under these conditions. Element 105 at high HCl concentrations will have a preference to form oxyhalide anionic complex [HaOCl_5]^2- rather than [HaCl_6]^-. For the same sort of anionic oxychloride complexes an estimate has been done of their partition between the organic and aqueous phases in the extraction by aliphatic amines, which shows the following succession of the partition coefficients: P_Nb < P_Ha < P_Pa.

A Cu-II complex of protonated 4,4'-bipyridine (Hbyp) and 2-picolinate (pic), [Cu-2(pic)(3)(Hbyp)(H2O)(ClO4)(2)], has been synthesised and characterised by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The structure consists of two copper atoms that have different environments, bridged by a carboxylate group. The equatorial plane is formed by the two bidentate picolinate groups in one Cu-II, and one picolinate, one monodentate 4,4'-bipyridyl ligand and a water molecule in the other. Each copper atom is also weakly bonded to a perchlorate anion in an axial position. One of the coordinated perchlorate groups displays anion-pi interaction with the coordinated pyridine ring. The noncoordinated carboxylate oxygen is involved in lone-pair (l.p.)-pi interaction with the protonated pyridine ring. In addition there are pi-pi and H-bonding interactions in the structure. Bader's theory of "atoms in molecules" (AIM) is used to characterise the anion-pi and l.p.-pi interactions observed in the solid state. A high-level ab initio study (RI-MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory) has been performed to analyse the anion-pi binding affinity of the pyridine ring when it is coordinated to a transition metal and also when the other pyridine ring of the 4,4'-bipyridine moiety is protonated. Theoretical investigations support the experimental findings of an intricate network of intermolecular interactions, which is characterised in the studied complex, and also indicate that protonation as well as coordination to the transition metal have important roles in influencing the pi-binding properties of the aromatic ring. Three new supramolecular assemblies of co-crystallized metal complexes and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, {[Cu(pic)(2)(H2O)(2)](H(2)mal)}(n) (1), {[Cu(pic)(2)(H2O)(2)](H(2)mal)(2)(H2O)(2)}(n) (2) and {[Cu(pic)(2)(MeOH)](H(2)succ)}(n) (3) {Hpic = 2-picolinic acid, H(2)mal = malonic acid and H(2)succ = succinic acid} have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal structure determination. The crystal packings of the complexes reveal that supramolecular associations of the monomeric complex units lead to the formation of layers through hydrogen bonding. In all the complexes, the dicarboxylic acid units connect the 2-D layers to act as pillars. The interaction between water molecules and the dicarboxylic acid plays an important role in the overall supramolecular assembly. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The new erbium(III) complex of picolinic acid (Hpic), ["Bu4N][Er(pic)(4)].5.5H(2)O, was synthesized and the crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was further characterized using IR, Raman, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis. The picolinate ligands (pic(-)) are coordinated through N,O-chelation to the erbium cations, as shown by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic results, leading to an eight coordinate complex. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for this compound which exhibits infrared emission. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An aqueous solution of the α-ω-dicarboxylic acid octanedioic acid (odaH2) reacts with [Cu2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2] in the presence of an excess of pyridine (py) to give the crystalline copper(II) complex {Cu2(η1η1μ2-oda)2(py)4(H2O)2}n (1). structure of 1, as determined by X-ray crystallography, consists of polymeric chains in which bridging oda2− anions link two crystallographically identical copper atoms. The copper atoms are also ligated by two transoidal pyridine nitrogens and an oxygen atom from an apical water molecule, giving the metals an overall N2O3 square-pyramidal geometry. If the blue solid 1 is gently heated, or if it is left to stand in its mother liquor for prolonged periods, it loses one molecule of pyridine and half a molecule of water and the green complex {Cu (oda)(py)(H2O)0.5}n (2) is formed. Spectroscopic and magnetic data for both complexes are given, together with the electrochemical and thermogravimetric measurements for 1.

The species [{Sn(C2H2iPr3-2,4,6)2}3] has been obtained in a simple, essentially quantitative, synthesis from SnCl2 and ArLi in diethyl ether at low temperature. The crystal structure analysis confirms the trimeric nature of the molecular units but reveals some unusual features. The crystal contains the unusual feature of an asymmetric unit that consists of three units of [{SnAr2}3] in P21/c; the molecular unit is a scalene triangle, showing high consistency between the three molecules, in contrast to analogous trimeric species of silicon or germanium. The SnSn bonds are lengthened (average value 2.942 Å) owing to steric crowding.

The electronic properties of four divinylanthracene-bridged diruthenium carbonyl complexes [{RuCl(CO)(PMe3)3}2(μ[BOND]CH[DOUBLE BOND]CHArCH[DOUBLE BOND]CH)] (Ar=9,10-anthracene (1), 1,5-anthracene (2), 2,6-anthracene (3), 1,8-anthracene (4)) obtained by molecular spectroscopic methods (IR, UV/Vis/near-IR, and EPR spectroscopy) and DFT calculations are reported. IR spectroelectrochemical studies have revealed that these complexes are first oxidized at the noninnocent bridging ligand, which is in line with the very small ν(C[TRIPLE BOND]O) wavenumber shift that accompanies this process and also supported by DFT calculations. Because of poor conjugation in complex 1, except oxidized 1+, the electronic absorption spectra of complexes 2+, 3+, and 4+ all display the characteristic near-IR band envelopes that have been deconvoluted into three Gaussian sub-bands. Two of the sub-bands belong mainly to metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions according to results from time-dependent DFT calculations. EPR spectroscopy of chemically generated 1+–4+ proves largely ligand-centered spin density, again in accordance with IR spectra and DFT calculations results.

A systematic study was made of the synthesis of V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O nanostructures, whose morphologies, crystal structure, and amount of water molecules between the layered structures were regulated by strictly controlling the hydrothermal treatment variables. The synthesis involved a direct hydrothermal reaction between V(2)O(5) and H(2)O(2), without the addition of organic surfactant or inorganic ions. The experimental results indicate that high purity nanostructures can be obtained using this simple and clean synthetic route. Oil the basis of a study of hydrothermal treatment variables such as reaction temperature and time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed that it was possible to obtain nanoribbons of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase and nanowires or nanorods of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) shows also that the water content in the Structure call be controlled at appropriate hydrothermal conditions. Concerning the oxidation state of the vanadium atoms of as-obtained samples, a mixed-valence state composed of V(4+) and V(5+) was observed ill the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase, while the valence of the vanadium atoms was preferentially 5+ in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) results also indicated that the local structure of vanadium possessed a higher degree of symmetry in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase.

Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is a member of the interleukin-10 cytokine family, which is involved in anti-microbial defenses, tissue damage protection and repair, and acute phase responses. Its signaling mechanism involves the sequential binding of IL-22 to interleukin-22 receptor 1 (IL-22R1), and of this dimer to interleukin-10 receptor 2 (IL-10R2) extracellular domain. We report a 1.9 A crystal structure of the IL-22/IL-22R1 complex, revealing crucial interacting residues at the IL-22/IL-22R1 interface. Functional importance of key residues was confirmed by site-directed mutagenesis and functional studies. Based on the X-ray structure of the binary complex, we discuss a molecular basis of the IL-22/IL-22R1 recognition by IL-10R2.

Garciniaphenone (=rel-(1R,5R,7R)-3-benzoyl-4-hydroxy-8,8-dimethyl-1,7-bis(3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl)bicyclo[3.3.1]non-3-ene-2,9-dione; 1). a novel natural product, was isolated from a hexane extract of Garcinia brasiliensis fruits. The crystal structure of 1 as well as the selected geometrical and Configurational features were compared with those of known related polyprenylated benzophenones. Garciniaphenone is the first representative of polyprenylated benzophenones without a prenyl substituent at C(5). Notably, the absence of a 5-prenyl substituent has an impact on the molecular geometry. The tautomeric form of 1 in the solid state was readily established by a residual-electronic-density map generated by means of a difference Fourier analysis, and there is an entirely delocalized six-membered chelate ring encompassing the keto-enol moiety. The configuration at C(7) was used to rationalize the nature of the keto-enol tautomeric form within 1. The intermolecular array in the network is maintained by nonclassical intermolecular H-bonds.

The coordination chemistry of the ligand N-thiazol-2-yl-toluenesulfonamidate towards the copper(II) ion has been investigated using an electrochemical synthesis method. The X-ray structure of this complex was elucidated and is discussed. The compound crystallised in the monoclinic crystal system, P2(1)/c space group with a = 17.3888(9), b = 16.3003(9), c = 18.3679(9) angstrom and beta = 114.3640(10)degrees. Four bidentate sulfathiazolato anions bridge two metal centers in a paddle-wheel fashion, with the nitrogen atoms as donors to give a dimeric species with a Cu center dot center dot center dot Cu distance of 2.7859(5) angstrom.
