Introducción: La ecocardiografía es actualmente la técnica de imagen diagnóstica más utilizada para la evaluación de la anatomía y la función cardiovascular. En la actualidad se está utilizando la ecocardiografía por speckle tracking la cual permite una evaluación mas objetiva y confiable de la función ventricular, sin embargo se requieren valores de referencia que hagan que los valores obtenidos sean válidos y útiles para determinar en forma mas oportuna conductas previas al deterioro de su función. Objetivo general: Determinar los valores de referencia para mecánica ventricular izquierda mediante ecocardiografía bidimensional por speckle tracking con equipo Toshiba Artida con transductor multifrecuencia de 3 megahertzios en pacientes sin patología cardiaca conocida en la Fundación Clínica Shaio en el año 2014. Metodología: Análisis de una cohorte prospectiva de todos los pacientes que ingresaron a la Fundación Clínica Shaio para evaluación ecocardiográfica sin patología cardiaca conocida entre los meses Agosto y Diciembre del 2014. Resultados: Se presenta este estudio de la evaluación de la mecánica ventricular izquierda en adultos sanos, los resultados son similares a los obtenidos en estudios de referencia, sin embargo se consideran de gran importancia ya que de acuerdo a la guía actual de evaluación de la mecánica ventricular por strain rate es importante que cada equipo se encuentre estandarizado con el fin de tener resultados válidos de acuerdo a las diferentes patologías en las que se puede aplicar y a nuestra población.

La Playa es un sector de la ciudad de Bogotá, donde se encuentra la oferta de músicos informales más grande de Colombia: mariachis, tríos de cuerda y grupos vallenatos. En esta investigación, se analiza la migración de músicos vallenatos provenientes del Caribe colombiano a este sector de la capital del país; se examina el trabajo de estos músicos en La Playa; y se revisa el proceso de consolidación del vallenato como música nacional.

As sociedades actuais caracterizam-se pela mudança, complexidade e diversidade cultural. De dia para dia assistimos cada vez mais à passagem das responsabilidades educativas da comunidade para a escola, assumindo esta, um papel preponderante na formação dos nossos jovens. O professor, é assim, considerado um elemento chave na construção de uma escola inclusiva e para que haja uma efectiva mudança da escola e das estratégias da sala de aula (Costa, 1999). O objectivo deste estudo é investigar as atitudes dos professores, determinando como estes percepcionam as suas Competências e de que forma essas atitudes são influenciadas, ou não, tendo em conta a experiência profissional, o grupo disciplinar a que pertencem, a experiência no ensino de alunos com deficiência e a formação inicial cujas áreas de estudo, estiveram directamente relacionados com a deficiência. A amostra deste estudo foi constituída por um total de 741 professores do ensino regular (534 afectos ao género feminino e 207 afectos ao género masculino). Foi aplicado o questionário APIAD – Atitudes dos Professores face à Inclusão de Alunos com Deficiência (Leitão, 2011), inferido através da resposta a 14 afirmações, em que cada uma delas deverá ser relacionado com 4 condições de deficiência (deficiência visual, deficiência auditiva, deficiência mental e deficiência motora). Concluiu-se então que, relativamente ao Grupo Disciplinar, as diferenças significativas se encontram entre os professores de Educação Física e os professores de Humanidades e de Ciências, sendo que os primeiros têm uma atitude mais positiva relativamente às suas competências. Quanto ao Contacto com a Deficiência, os resultados indicaram que os professores que têm experiência no ensino de alunos com deficiência têm uma atitude mais positiva relativamente às suas competências. No que se refere à Experiência Profissional, os nossos resultados encontram diferenças significativas entre os professores com menos anos de experiência e os professores com mais anos de experiência, sendo que os primeiros têm uma atitude mais positiva relativamente às suas competências Por último, em relação à Formação Inicial, os professores cujas áreas de estudo, na sua formação inicial, estiveram directamente relacionados com deficiência têm uma atitude mais positiva relativamente às suas competências. ABSTRACT: Today, societies are characterized by change, complexity and cultural diversity. Each day, we saw more and more responsibilities passing from the educational community to school, assuming that a major role in the formation of our youth. Teacher is considered a key element in the building of an inclusive school and for that there is a real change of school and classroom strategies (Costa, 1999). The purpose of this study is to investigate teacher´s attitudes, determining how they perceive their skills and how these attitudes are or aren´t influenced taking into account the professional experience, the subject group they belong to, the experience in students with those particular needs teaching and last, the initial training with chairs that had contact with people with needs. The study sample consisted in a total of 741 teachers of the regular education (534 allocated to the female and 207 assigned to the male gender). We used the questionnaire APIAD - Attitudes of teachers towards the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities (Leitão, 2011), inferred by the response to 14 statements, each one of them should be related to four conditions of disability (visual impairment, hearing impairment, mental retardation and physical disabilities). It was concluded then that for the Disciplinary Group, significant differences are found between the physical education teachers and teachers of Humanities and Sciences, and the former have a more positive attitude to their skills. How to contact the Disability, the results indicated that teachers who have experience teaching students with disabilities have a more positive attitude to their skills. With regard to professional experience, significant differences were found between teachers with fewer years of experience and teachers with more years of experience, and the former have a more positive attitude to their skills. Finally, regarding to initial training, teachers in their initial training formation who have contact with people with disabilities have a more positive attitude to their skills.

A geodesic in a graph G is a shortest path between two vertices of G. For a specific function e(n) of n, we define an almost geodesic cycle C in G to be a cycle in which for every two vertices u and v in C, the distance d(G)(u, v) is at least d(C)(u, v) - e(n). Let omega(n) be any function tending to infinity with n. We consider a random d-regular graph on n vertices. We show that almost all pairs of vertices belong to an almost geodesic cycle C with e(n)= log(d-1)log(d-1) n+omega(n) and vertical bar C vertical bar =2 log(d-1) n+O(omega(n)). Along the way, we obtain results on near-geodesic paths. We also give the limiting distribution of the number of geodesics between two random vertices in this random graph. The purpose of this essay is using theories about labeling and social bonds to study whether a measure of rehabilitation for the psychically disabled contributes to a return to a normal status as not-labeled. Partly we examine whether the activities organized by the regulation-ruled authorities during the work of rehabilitation lead to shame or pride, and partly how these activities are organized regarding the processes that lead to the emotions pride or shame among the participants. Method: qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with professional rehabilitation-actors at the Public Employment Office (PEO), the Social Insurance Office (SIO), the Social Service (SOS), the Psychiatry and the Division of Labour Market (AME).Conclusions: the Psychiatry clients are treated with respect, may participate, and communication is characterized by attunement, therefore strong social bonds can be built. On the contrary, among the other examined activities, we found many elements that arouse shame. Since these are more ruled by regulations, the result is engulfment and demands on conformity, because the compromise-possibilities are almost non-existent. Psychically disabled persons are met by prejudice, ignorance, disrespect and a non-solidarity-language. To get help, the individual has to accept a label in form of a diagnosis, and this labeling leads to a negative self-image. Furthermore the psychically disabled persons are falling between two chairs because of a weak cooperation between the rehabilitation-actors. Bimodal alienation and triangulation contributes to the difficulties in cooperation.Result: the social bonds are not strong enough to achieve a rehabilitation-effect. Even if the treatment from each administrator is important, we find the explanation-level primarily in laws, rules and government, because the structure rules the rehabilitation-measures, with shame as a consequence. Since we found elements of shame institutionalized in the way of working at PEO, SIO, SOS and AME, it means that social bonds can never reach a level good enough for achieving pride and normalization from a deviance or labeled identity.

This paper is built on the hypothesis that good governance and reputation are inextricably linked. It takes the governance of performing arts organizations in Queensland, Australia as a case study, and focuses on the role of the nonprofit arts board and its practices of governance and measures of effectiveness. Because of the financial constraints under which arts companies operate, their sustainability relies on audiences and on government or corporate support. The reputation of the company flows from the board's capacity to manage finances, stakeholders and mission. In-depth interviews with board chairs and general managers revealed that strong management systems and rigorous financial reporting are the drivers of good governance. Innovation in product development and artistic excellence are secondary in reputation to these measures. The paper proposes a model of good governance for arts boards.

Carnegie and Edwards (2001) suggest that the formation of an organisational body is just one of the 'signals of movement' within the dynamic process of professionalisation of an occupation and they list the sponsoring of professorial posts and research activities at universities as further examples. While the literature on this process in Australia does refer to the sponsorship of chairs of accounting (Carnegie & Williams, 2001), little has been written identifying the range of other areas of sponsorship by the organised accounting bodies. This paper presents details of the first fifty years presentations of the Annual Accounting Research Lectures held at The University of Melbourne, Australia. They have been presented continuously since 1940, when they were inaugurated with sponsorship from the Commonwealth Institute of Accountants. The paper presents the first complete listing of details relating to the presenter (including name, gender, residency and occupational area), title of the paper, date of presentation (where known) and details of publication (where appropriate). The initial and subsequent motivation for the presentation of the series and the influence of the lectures in promoting research and fostering relations between the professional bodies and the university, during a period of great significance in the development of accounting education and the professionalisation of accounting in Australia, is also discussed.

It is a little after 7.00pm on a Sunday evening and people are still arriving, slightly hurried as they kick off their shoes before entering the studio. They pay $7.00 and find a seat facing the bare studio floor; white floor against the pink walls. The room seems crowded, although the numbers are not large, and people talk comfortably sitting on the few benches and chairs or on the floor. One of the performers emerges from her conversation amongst the audience to front the group and the babble drops away. “How many of you are new to Conundrum?’ she asks. A few people raise their hands, but many do not. The question is a litmus test for the state of the audience and as a way to bring the novice into the game. “Everything performed here tonight will be completely improvised” she continues. “And tonight on Conundrum we have…” and she rattles off a list of the names of the groups or solo performers who will be performing that evening. Some of the names or groups are different from the last Conundrum one month previously. But two of the groups, State of Flux and 5 Square Metres, have been performing at Conundrum, on the last Sunday of every month, for the last eight years.

One consequence of the development of cultural policy has been a demand for more creative leadership in arts organisations. This article provides a case study of how leadership of the Australia Council changed from the 1970s to the beginning of the 21st century. It argues that changes to the way in which Australia Council chairs approached their role was shaped by, and contributed to, the trend towards constructing the arts as an industry. Part of this change sees the Australia Council subjected to aspects of reform, which were widely endorsed by the Australian public sector. The article identifies three styles of leadership exhibited by the chairs over the period: visionary, statesman and reformer, in three phases of the Council's history. It examines the political and social imperatives shaping these leadership styles.

Background: Surgical placebos are controversial. This in-depth study explored the design, acceptability, and feasibility issues relevant to designing a surgical placebo-controlled trial for the evaluation of the clinical and cost effectiveness of arthroscopic lavage for the management of people with osteoarthritis of the knee in the UK.
Methods: Two surgeon focus groups at a UK national meeting for orthopaedic surgeons and one regional surgeon focus group (41 surgeons); plenary discussion at a UK national meeting for orthopaedic anaesthetists (130 anaesthetists); three focus groups with anaesthetists (one national, two regional; 58 anaesthetists); two focus groups with members of the patient organisation Arthritis Care (7 participants); telephone interviews with people on consultant waiting lists from two UK regional centres (15 participants); interviews with Chairs of UK ethics committees (6 individuals); postal surveys of members of the British Association of Surgeons of the Knee (382 surgeons) and members of the British Society of Orthopaedic Anaesthetists (398 anaesthetists); two centre pilot (49 patients assessed).
Results: There was widespread acceptance that evaluation of arthroscopic lavage had to be conducted with a placebo control if scientific rigour was not to be compromised. The choice of placebo surgical procedure (three small incisions) proved easier than the method of anaesthesia (general anaesthesia). General anaesthesia, while an excellent mimic, was more intrusive and raised concerns among some stakeholders and caused extensive discussion with local decision-makers when seeking formal approval for the pilot. Patients were willing to participate in a pilot with a placebo arm; although some patients when allocated to surgery became apprehensive about the possibility of receiving placebo, and withdrew. Placebo surgery was undertaken successfully.
Conclusions: Our study illustrated the opposing and often strongly held opinions about surgical placebos, the ethical issues underpinning this controversy, and the challenges that exist even when ethics committee approval has been granted. It showed that a placebo-controlled trial could be conducted in principle, albeit with difficulty. It also highlighted that not only does a placebo-controlled trial in surgery have to be ethically and scientifically acceptable but that it also must be a feasible course of action. The place of placebo-controlled surgical trials more generally is likely to be limited and require specific circumstances to be met. Suggested criteria are presented.

This paper focuses on the problem of tracking people through occlusions by scene objects. Rather than relying on models of the scene to predict when occlusions will occur as other researchers have done, this paper proposes a linear dynamic system that switches between two alternatives of the position measurement in order to handle occlusions as they occur. The filter automatically switches between a foot-based measure of position (assuming z = Q) to a head-based position measure (given the person's height) when an occlusion of the person's lower body occurs. No knowledge of the scene or its occluding objects is used. Unlike similar research [2, 14], the approach does not assume a fixed height for people and so is able to track humans through occlusions even when they change height during the occlusion. The approach is evaluated on three furnished scenes containing tables, chairs, desks and partitions. Occlusions range from occlusions of legs, occlusions whilst being seated and near-total occlusions where only the person's head is visible. Results show that the approach provides a significant reduction in false-positive tracks in a multi-camera environment, and more than halves the number of lost tracks in single monocular camera views.

Climate change, global warming, rising sea levels, ice cap melting, carbon taxes and trading schemes etc. are all major environmental issues that confront the modern world. Universities are now trying to ensure that their students graduate with an understanding of environmental sustainability regardless of their field of expertise. 


This study investigates 181 undergraduate and 155 post graduate business and law units from five schools within an Australian University to see how they embed environmental sustainability into their existing curriculums. It also examines how environmental sustainability fits into the scaffolding of the main Bachelor of Commerce degree and how each school plays its part into the overall development of graduates’ understanding of environmental sustainability. In July and December 2011 all unit chairs in the Faculty of Business and Law at Deakin University were asked if and how environmental sustainability was included in their units.

Of the 336 unit chairs that completed the survey, 37% of those unit chairs replied positively and of the remainder, the vast majority of these believed environmental sustainability was not applicable to their unit. However, measuring the effectiveness of the introduction of environmental sustainability into the curriculum is extremely difficult and this is often done by student assessment methods. Only 7% of the units actually carried out any assessment of the students’ knowledge of environmental sustainability.

The findings across the faculty were mixed, with Post Graduate units and Management and Marketing courses being very strong in embedding environmental sustainability into their curriculum. The Bachelor of Commerce Degree students, especially those with Management or Marketing majors received a good grounding in environmental sustainability. 

These findings have implications for course and curriculum designers who are trying to effectively embed environmental sustainability into the scaffolding of their existing educational courses.

We would like to welcome you to the Regular Papers proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Information Security and Assurance (ISA 2013) which was held on April 26-28, 2013 at Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino, Cebu, Philippines. ISA 2013 is focused on various aspects of advances in researches on Security and Assurance. It provided a chance for academic and industry professionals to discuss recent progress in the related areas. We expect that the conference and its publications will be a trigger for further related research and technology improvements in this important subject. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of all the Chairs and members of the Editorial Committee. On July 26–29, 2010 the 13th International Myopia Conference was held in Tübingen, Germany and included 17 separate symposia, each with 3–5 presentations. Here, in a single paper, the chairs of those Symposia describe the scientific advances noted at the conference and include the full abstracts of the individual myopia papers presented in each symposium along with the authors and their institutions. The 17 Symposia covered 7 topics: Why Study the Mechanisms of Myopia?; Novel Approaches to Risk Factors; Signaling Eye Growth- How Could Basic Biology Be Translated into Clinical Insights?; Where Are Genetic and Proteomic Approaches Leading?; How Does Visual Function Contribute to and Interact with Ametropia?; Does Eye Shape Matter?; Why Ametropia at All?
