The present paper shows preliminary results of an ongoing project which one of the goals is to investigate the viability of using waste FCC catalyst (wFCC), originated from Portuguese oil refinery, to produce low carbon blended cements. For this purpose, four blended cements were produced by substituting cement CEM I 42.5R up to 20% (w/w) by waste FCC catalyst. Initial and final setting times, consistency of standard paste, soundness and compressive strengths after 2, 7 and 28 days were measured. It was observed that the wFCC blended cements developed similar strength, at 28 days, compared to the reference cement, CEM I 42.5R. Moreover, cements with waste FCC catalyst incorporation up to 15% w/w meet European Standard EN 197-1 specifications for CEM II/A type cement, in the 42.5R strength class.

Root canal and furcal perforations are causes of endodontic therapy failure and different materials that stimulate tissue mineralization have been proposed for perforation treatment. In the first case, a patient presented tooth 46 with unsatisfactory endodontic treatment and a periapical radiographic lesion. A radiolucent area compatible with a perforating internal resorption cavity was found in the mesial root. The granulation tissue was removed, and root canals were prepared. The intracanal medication was composed of calcium hydroxide and the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 11-year followup showed radiographic repair of the tissue adjacent to the perforation and absence of clinical signs and symptoms or periapical lesion. In the second case, a patient presented with edema on the buccal surface of tooth 46. The examination showed a radiolucent area in the furcation region compatible with an iatrogenic perforation cavity. The mesial root canals were calcified, and only the distal root canal was prepared. The cavity was filled with a calcium hydroxide-based paste and the distal root canal was obturated. In sequence, the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 9-year followup showed the tooth in masticatory function with radiographic and clinical aspects compatible with normality.

The goal of this article was to evaluate the surface characteristics of the pine fibres and its impact on the performance of fibre-cement composites. Lower polar contribution of the surface energy indicates that unbleached fibres have less hydrophilic nature than the bleached fibres. Bleaching the pulp makes the fibres less stronger, more fibrillated and permeable to liquids due to removal the amorphous lignin and its extraction from the fibre surface. Atomic force microscopy reveals these changes occurring on the fibre surface and contributes to understanding the mechanism of adhesion of the resulting fibre to cement interface. Scanning electron microscopy shows that pulp bleaching increased fibre/cement interfacial bonding, whilst unbleached fibres were less susceptible to cement precipitation into the fibre cavities (lumens) in the prepared composites. Consequently, bleached fibre-reinforced composites had lower ductility due to the high interfacial adhesion between the fibre and the cement and elevated rates of fibre mineralization.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of rat subcutaneous tissue to MTA Fillapex® (Angelus), an experimental root canal filling material based on Portland cement and propylene glycol (PCPG), and a zinc oxide, eugenol and iodoform (ZOEI) paste. These materials were placed in polyethylene tubes and implanted into the dorsal connective tissue of Wistar rats for 7 and 15 days. The specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and evaluated regarding inflammatory reaction parameters by optical microscopy. The intensity of inflammatory response against the sealers was analyzed by two blinded and previously calibrated examiners for all experimental periods (kappa=0.96). The histological evaluation showed that all materials caused a moderate inflammatory reaction at 7 days, which subsided with time. A greater inflammatory reaction was observed at 7 days in the tubes filled with ZOEI paste. Tubes filled with MTA Fillapex presented some giant cells, macrophages and lymphocytes after 7 days. At 15 days, the presence of fibroblasts and collagen fibers was observed indicating normal tissue healing. The tubes filled with PCPG showed similar results to those observed in MTA Fillapex. At 15 days, the inflammatory reaction was almost absent at the tissue, with several collagen fibers indicating normal tissue healing. Data were analyzed by the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test (?=0.05). Statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was found only between PCPG at 15 days and ZOEI at 7 days groups. No significant differences were observed among the other groups/periods (p>0.05). MTA Fillapex and Portland cement added with propylene glycol had greater tissue compatibility than the PCPG paste.

Clinical application of injectable ceramic cement in comminuted fractures revealed penetration of the viscous paste into the joint space. Not much is known on the fate of this cement and its influence on articular tissues. The purpose of this experimental study was to assess these unknown alterations of joint tissues after intra-articular injection of cement in a rabbit knee. Observation periods were from 1 week up to 24 months, with three rabbits per group. Norian SRS cement was injected into one knee joint, the contralateral side receiving the same volume of Ringers' solution. Light microscopic evaluation of histologic sections was performed, investigating the appearance of the cement, inflammatory reactions, and degenerative changes of the articular surface. No signs of pronounced acute or chronic inflammation were visible. The injected cement was mainly found as a single particle, anterior to the cruciate ligaments. It became surrounded by synovial tissues within 4 weeks and showed signs of superficial resorption. In some specimens, bone formation was seen around the cement. Degeneration of the articular surface showed no differences between experimental and control side, and no changes over time became apparent. No major degenerative changes were induced by the injected cement. The prolonged presence of cement still seems to make it advisable to remove radiologically visible amounts from the joint space.

The changes in mechanical properties of portland cement mortars due to the addition of carbon fibres (CF) to the mix have been studied. Compression and flexural strengths have been determined in relation to the amount of fibres added to the mix, water/binder ratio, curing time and porosity. Additionally, the corrosion level of reinforcing steel bars embedded in portland cement mortars containing CF and silica fume (SF) have also been investigated and reinforcing steel corrosion rates have been determined. As a consequence of the large concentration of oxygen groups in CF surface, a good interaction between the CF and the water of the mortar paste is to be expected. A CF content of 0.5% of cement weight implies an optimum increase in flexural strength and an increase in embedded steel corrosion.

This article shows the research carried out by the authors focused on how the shape of structural reinforced concrete elements treated with electrochemical chloride extraction can affect the efficiency of this process. Assuming the current use of different anode systems, the present study considers the comparison of results between conventional anodes based on Ti-RuO2 wire mesh and a cement-based anodic system such as a paste of graphite-cement. Reinforced concrete elements of a meter length were molded to serve as laboratory specimens, to closely represent authentic structural supports, with circular and rectangular sections. Results confirm almost equal performances for both types of anode systems when electrochemical chloride extraction is applied to isotropic structural elements. In the case of anisotropic ones, such as rectangular sections with no uniformly distributed rebar, differences in electrical flow density were detected during the treatment. Those differences were more extreme for Ti-RuO2 mesh anode system. This particular shape effect is evidenced by obtaining the efficiencies of electrochemical chloride extraction in different points of specimens.

In this study the effect of structure and amount of polyglactin fibre incorporation into a brushite forming calcium phosphate cement system and the effect of mechanical compaction on the fibre modified system were investigated. In comparison the effect of resorbable polycaprolactone surface coating of cement specimens was investigated. The results showed that, apart from the mechanical properties of the reinforcing material, the structure of the incorporated fibres, regular or random, is crucial for the resulting flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. Fibre reinforcement could also be combined with mechanical compaction of the cement/fibre composite paste leading to a possible 7-fold increase in flexural strength or an almost 5-fold increase in modulus of elasticity. Reinforcement of the tensile surface of cement grafts may ultimately improve strength where required, especially in conjunction with bone fixation devices. © 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Natural pozzolans are raw materials from geological deposits with a range of chemical compositions that when combined with suitable alkali activators can be converted to geopolymer cement for concrete production. In this paper the concept of adding mineral additives to enhance the properties of geopolymer cement is introduced. Taftan andesite, a natural Iranian pozzolan, was used to study the effect of adding mineral additives such as kaolinite, lime and other calcined pozzolans on the compressive strength of geopolymer cement under both normal and autoclave curing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) was used to determine the composition of the gel phase in both alkali-activated Taftan pozzolan with and without mineral additions. The work has shown that deficiencies in SiO2, Al2O3 and CaO content in the raw natural pozzolan can be compensated for by adding mineral additives for enhanced properties.

Background and purpose Our aim was to prove in an animal model that the use of HA paste at the cement-bone interface in the acetabulum would improve fixation. We examined, in sheep, the effect of interposing a layer of hydroxyapatite cement around the periphery of a polyethylene socket prior to fixing it using polymethylemethacrylate (PMMA). Methods We made a randomized study involving 22 sheep to test whether the application of BoneSource hydroxyapatite material to the surface of the ovine acetabulum prior to cementing a polyethylene cup at hip arthroplasty improved the fixation and the nature of the interface. We studied the gross radiographical appearance of the implant-bone interface and the histological appearance at the interface. Results There were more radiolucencies evident in the control group. Histologically, only sheep randomized into the BoneSource group exhibited a fully osseointegrated interface. Use of the hydroxyapatite material did not confer any detrimental effects. In some cases the material appeared to have been fully resorbed. When the material was evident on histological section, it was incorporated into an osseointegrated interface. There was no giant cell reaction present in any case. There was no evidence of migration of BoneSource to the articulation. Interpretation The application of HA material prior to cementation of a socket produced an improved interface. The technique may be useful in man with to extend the longevity of the cemented implant by protecting the socket interface from the effect of hydrodynamic fluid flow and particulate debris.
