Dry sliding wear behavior of die-cast ADC12 aluminum alloy composites reinforced with short alumina fibers were investigated by using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The Al2O3 fibers were 4 mu m in diameter and were present in volume fractions (T-f)ranging from 0.03 to 0.26, The length of the fiber varied from 40 to 200 mu m. Disks of aluminum-alumina composites were rubbed against a pin of nitrided stainless steel SUS440B with a load of 10 N at a sliding velocity of 0.1 m/s. The unreinforced ADC 12 aluminum alloy and their composites containing low volume fractions of alumina (V-f approximate to 0.05) showed a sliding-distance-dependent transition from severe to mild wear. However, composites containing high volume fractions of alumina ( V-f > 0.05) exhibited only mild wear for all sliding distances. The duration of occurrence of the severe wear regime and the wear rate both decrease with increasing volume fraction. In MMCs the wear rate in the mild wear regime decreases with increase in volume fraction: reaching a minimum value at V-f = 0.09 Beyond V-f = 0.09 the wear rate increasesmarginally. On the other hand, the wear rate of the counterface (steel pin) was found to increase moderately with increase in V-f. From the analysis of wear data and detailed examination of (a) worn surfaces, (b) their cross-sections and (c) wear debris, two modes of wear mechanisms have been identified to be operative, in these materials and these are: (i) adhesive wear in the case of unreinforced matrix material and in MMCs with low Vf and (ii) abrasive wear in the case of MMCs with high V-f. Pristine and long-chain functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were incorporated successfully in supramolecular organogels formed by an all-trans tri(p-phenylenevinylene) bis-aldoxime to give rise to new nanocomposites with interesting mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Variable-temperature UV-vis and fluorescence spectra reveal both pristine and functionalized SWNTs promote aggregation of the gelator molecules and result in quenching of the UV-vis and fluorescence intensity. Electron microscopy and confocal microscopy show the existence of a densely packed and directionally aligned fibrous network in the resulting nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the composites shows that incorporation of SWNTs increases the gel formation temperature. The DSC of the xerogels of 1-SWNT composites indicates formation of different thermotropic mesophases which is also evident from polarized optical microscopy. The reinforced aggregation of the gelators on SWNT doping was reflected in the mechanical properties of the composites. Rheology of the composites demonstrates the formation of a rigid and viscoelastic solid-like assembly on SWNT incorporation. The composites from gel-SWNTs were found to be semiconducting in nature and showed enhanced electrical conductivity compared to that of the native organogel. Upon irradiation with a near IR laser at 1064 nm for 5 min it was possible to selectively induce a gel-to-sol phase transition of the nanocomposites, while irradiation for even 30 min of the native organogel under identical conditions did not cause any gel-to-sol conversion.

An experimental study aimed at understanding the deformational behavior of conventionally reinforced steel fiber concrete beams in pure bending is reported in this paper. One group of beams has steel fibers dispersed in the entire volume of the beam and the second has fibers dispersed over half the depth of the beam on the tension side. A comparative study of the deformational characteristics of these beams has been made. Half-depth fiber inclusion, requiring only half the quantity of fibers of full-depth inclusion, is found to be equally effective in improving the deformational behavior of beams. Thus, by such modes of inclusion of fibers, an economical and efficient use of expensive steel fibers can be realized.

An asymptotically correct analysis is developed for Macro Fiber Composite unit cell using Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM). VAM splits the 3D nonlinear problem into two parts: A 1D nonlinear problem along the length of the fiber and a linear 2D cross-sectional problem. Closed form solutions are obtained for the 2D problem which are in terms of 1D parameters.

This study presents the results of an experimental and analytical comparison of the flexural behavior of a high-strength concrete specimen (no conventional reinforcement) with an average plain concrete cube strength of nearly 65 MPa and containing trough shape steel fibers. Trough shape steel fibers with a volume fraction ranging from 0 to 1.5% and having a constant aspect ratio of 80 have been used in this study. Increased toughness and a more ductile stress-strain response were observed with an increase in fiber content, when the fibers were distributed over the full/partial depth of the beam cross section. Based on the tests, a robust analytical procedure has been proposed to establish the required partial depth to contain fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) so as to obtain the flexural capacity of a member with FRC over the full depth. It is expected that this procedure will help designers in properly estimating the required partial depth of fibers in composite sections for specific structural applications. Empirical and mechanistic relations have also been proposed in this study to establish the load-deflection behavior of high-strength FRC.

Absorption due to immersion in aqueous media consisting of either saline or seawater or due to exposure to water vapor conditions and the attendant effect on the compressive properties of syntactic foam reinforced with E-glass fibers in the form of chopped strands were studied. Whereas the compressive strength decreased in samples exposed to water vapor, the saline or seawater immersed samples showed increase when compared to the dry sample. The decrease in strength in the vapor-exposed case is ascribed to higher absorption of water and to debonding and damaged features for interfaces. The enhancement of strength values for the samples immersed in saltish media is traced to the larger size of the chloride ion and resultant changes in the stress state around the fiber-bearing regions. Recourse to an analysis of scanning electron microscopic pictures of the compression-failed samples is taken to explain the observed trends.

This paper presents a spectral finite element formulation for uniform and tapered rotating CNT embedded polymer composite beams. The exact solution to the governing differential equation of a rotating Euler-Bernoulli beam with maximum centrifugal force is used as an interpolating function for the spectral element formulation. Free vibration and wave propagation analysis is carried out using the formulated spectral element. The present study shows the substantial effect of volume fraction and L/D ratio of CNTs in a beam on the natural frequency, impulse response and wave propagation characteristics of the rotating beam. It is found that the CNTs embedded in the matrix can make the rotating beam non-dispersive in nature at higher rotation speeds. Embedded CNTs can significantly alter the dynamics of polymer-nanocomposite beams. The results are also compared with those obtained for carbon fiber reinforced laminated composite rotating beams. It is observed that CNT reinforced rotating beams are superior in performance compared to laminated composite rotating beams. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reinforcing soil with fibers is a useful method for improving the strength and settlement response of soil. The soil and fiber characteristics and their interaction are some of the major factors affecting the strength of reinforced soil. The fibers are usually randomly distributed in the soil, and their orientation has a significant effect on the behavior of the reinforced soil. In the paper, a study of the effect of anisotropic distribution of fibers on the stress-strain response is presented. Based on the concept of the modified Cam clay model, an analytical model was formulated for the fiber-reinforced soil, and the effect of fiber orientation on the stress-strain behavior of soil was studied in detail. The results show that, as the inclination of fibers with the horizontal plane increased, the contribution of fibers in improving the strength of fiber-reinforced soil decreased. The effect of fibers is maximum when they are in the direction of extension, and vice versa. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanohoms (SWNH) and SWNH plus few-layer graphene (EG)-reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix composites have been measured using the nanoindentation technique. The elastic modulus (E) and hardness (H) of PVA were found to improve by similar to 315% and similar to 135%, respectively, upon the addition of just 0.4 wt % SWNH. These properties were found to be comparable to those obtained upon the addition of 0.2 wt % single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) to PVA. Furthermore, upon binary addition of 0.2 wt % EG and 0.4 wt % SWNH to PVA, benefits in the form of similar to 400% and similar to 330% synergy in E and H, respectively, were observed, along with an increased resistance to viscoelastic deformation. The reasons for these improvements are discussed in terms of the dimensionality of nanocarbon, the effectiveness of nanocarbon and polymer matrix interaction, and the influence of nanocarbon on the degree of crystallinity of the polymer. The results from SWNH reinforcement in this study demonstrate the scope for a novel and, in contrast to SWNT composites, a commercially feasible opportunity for strengthening polymer matrices.

Aimed at brittle composites reinforced by randomly distributed short-fibers with a relatively large aspect ratio, stiffness modulus and strength, a mesoscopic material model was proposed. Based on the statistical description, damage mechanisms, damage-induced anisotropy, damage rate effect and stress redistribution, the constitutive relation were derived. By taking glass fiber reinforced polypropylene polymers as an example, the effect of initial orientation distribution of fibers, damage-induced anisotropy, and damage-rate effect on macro-behaviors of composites were quantitatively analyzed. The theoretical predictions compared favorably with the experimental results.

Mg65 Cu25 Gdlo bulk metallic glass and its carbon nanotube reinforced composite were prepared. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to investigate the kinetics of glass transition and crystallization processes. The influence of CNTs addition to the glass matrix on the glass transition and crystallization kinetics was studied. It is shown that the kinetic effect on glass transition and crystallization are preserved for both the monothetic glass and its glass composite. Adding CNTs in to the glass matrix reduces the influence of the heating rate on the crystallization process. In addition, the CNTs increase the energetic barrier for the glass transition. This results in the decrease of GFA . The mechanism of the GFA decrease was also discussed.
