Investigations towards the synthesis of a CD-steroid intermediate

The development of a new synthesis of 2,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-lβ-hydroxy-4-formyl-7a-methylindene was undertaken involving the preparation of 2,6,7,7a-tetra-hydro-1β-hydroxy-4-methoxymethyl-7a-methylindene because of the erratic yield in the last oxidation step of the reported synthesis of the former compound. Although various attempts to prepare the latter were not successful, interesting rearrangement products, the dienone, 5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7a-dimethyl-5H-indene-1,5-dione and the tricyclic keto alcohol, 2,6-diketo-3-methyltricyclo(5,2,1,0)decan-8-ol, were obtained, the structures of which have been proved by spectral data. Mechanisms for the formation of these products have been proposed.

Development of atmospheric pressure ionization ion mobility spectrometry and ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry

This study is focused on the development and evaluation of ion mobility instrumentation with various atmospheric pressure ionization techniques and includes the following work. First, a high-resolution drift tube ion mobility spectrometer (IMS), coupled with a commercial triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS), was developed. This drift tube IMS is compatible with the front-end of commercial Sciex mass spectrometers (e.g., Sciex API-300, 365, and 3000) and also allows easy (only minor modifications are needed) installation between the original atmospheric pressure ion source and the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Performance haracteristics (e.g.,resolving power, detection limit, transmission efficiency of ions) of this IMS-MS instrument were evaluated. Development of the IMS-MS instrument also led to a study where a proposal was made that tetraalkylammonium ions can be used as chemical standards for ESI-IMS. Second, the same drift tube design was also used to build a standalone ion mobility spectrometer equipped with a Faraday plate detector. For this highresolution (resolving power about 100 shown) IMS device, a multi-ion source platform was built, which allows the use of a range of atmospheric pressure ionization methods, such as: corona discharge chemical ionization (CD-APCI), atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), and radioactive atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (R-APCI). The multi-ion source platform provides easy switching between ionization methods and both positive and negative ionization modes can be used. Third, a simple desorpion/ionization on silicon (DIOS) ion source set-up for use with the developed IMS and IMS-MS instruments was built and its operation demonstrated. Fourth, a prototype of a commercial aspiration-type ion mobility spectrometer was mounted in front of a commercial triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The set-up, which is simple, easy to install, and requires no major modifications to the MS, provides the possibility of gathering fundamental information about aspiration mobility spectrometry.

C12-Helix development in ()n sequences - spectroscopic characterization of Boc-Aib-4(R)Val]-OMe oligomers

The solution conformations of the -hybrid oligopeptides Boc-Aib-4(R)Val]n-OMe (n = 1-8) in organic solvents have been probed by NMR, IR, and CD spectroscopic methods. In the solid state, this peptide series favors C12-helical conformations, which are backbone-expanded analogues of 310 helices in -peptide sequences. NMR studies of the six- (n = 3) and 16-residue (n = 8) peptides reveal that only two NH protons attached the N-terminus residues Aib(1) and 4(R)Val(2) are solvent-exposed. Sequential NiH-Ni+1H NOEs characteristic of local helical conformations are also observed at the residues. IR studies establish that chain extension leads to a large enhancement in the intensities of the hydrogen-bonded NH stretching bands (3343-3280 cm-1), which suggest elongation of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded structures. The development of C12-helical structures upon lengthening of the sequence is supported by the NMR and IR observations. The CD spectra of the ()n peptides reveal a negative maximum at ca. 206 nm and a positive maximum at ca. 192 nm, spectral feature that are distinct from those of 310 helices in -peptides.

Facilitated advocacy: supporting farmers to have a voice in policy making and the development of service provision

Listening to people, especially those who are poor, and involving them in policy making and decisions about service delivery processes are logical steps in building better services and improving policies aimed at poverty alleviation. This case describes a facilitated advocacy that helped to negotiate and support a role for poor people who farm and fish, to contribute recommendations for changes in services and policies that impact on their lives. The national Government of India’s Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research, both in the capital Delhi, have been linking with farmers and fishers and state government officials in the eastern states of Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal, in partnership with the STREAM Initiative of the intergovernmental Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia Pacific and with the support of the UK Government Department for International Development, Natural resources Systems Program supporting farmers to have a voice(13 p.)

Regional review on livelihood opportunities related to mariculture development

This report examines the role mariculture could play in reducing poverty and providing alternative livelihood opportunities for people living in coastal areas. This includes a review of the current status of coastal poverty, coastal livelihoods and vulnerabilities within the Asia-Pacific region and the experiences and examples of sustainable economic development through mariculture. Report of the workshop on process monitoring and significant change. Bangkok, Thailand 26-28 June 2002

The STREAM Initiative is a process rather than a project, and its focus is on learning and building on learning, not the achievement of pre-determined objectives. An overarching goal of STREAM is to facilitate changes that support poor people who manage aquatic resources. A key objective of STREAM is policy change, which in itself is complex and difficult to monitor. Two further layers of complexity relate to the regional scope of the Initiative and the collaborative involvement of stakeholders, all of which need to be accountable for their work. The objectives of this workshop are consistent with the aims of the STREAM Initiative and can be summerized as follows: 1- Familiarizing everyone in the regional STREAM Initiative with work being done in process monitoring and significant change. 2- Discussion and development of a practical information system that enables (i) the monitoring of development processes and significant changes occurring within the STREAM Initiative, and (ii) learning to inform STREAM implementation and other stakeholders. Networking for Rural Development: a closer look at the evolution of communications in the STREAM Initiative

What began as a general desire to share messages about processes, technologies, lives and opportunities – among farming and fishing communities and those who work with them – has evolved into a network that shares meanings and lessons learnt. Now instead of relying on core funding or catalytic support, the STREAM Initiative is self-funded through the services its network provides to academic, development and other organizations. In October 2000 the government of Cambodia announced a major change in fisheries management policy. The core elements of the new policy are the reduction of fishing lot concession areas by 56%, the broader participation of fishing communities in the management of fisheries and a focus on the efficient, sustainable and equitable use of the living aquatic resources. To facilitate the establishment and development of the Community Fisheries, support and monitor their activities, the Department of Fisheries was authorized1 to establish a Community Fisheries Development Office (CFDO).
