A new kind of Q switched laser, the bow tie laser is introduced. This type of laser permits large area facets at both ends so that generation of high optical powers involve low optical intensities to prevent optical damage. The incorporation of doubled tapered waveguide structure to the Q switched multicontact laser has increased the optical pulse energies and peak powers of the laser.

The passive mode-locking in novel double tapered Bow-Tie lasers is investigated. This investigation aims to determine the possible GHz repetition rate at which passive mode-locking is derived, in addition, the record power levels will also be demonstrated. Alternative drive schemes and contact configurations to achieve optimized performance are discussed.

The use of tapered waveguide lasers and amplifiers for enhanced picosecond pulse generation has led to order-of-magnitude peak power and pulse energy improvements. Monolithic pulse generation schemes have so far relied on a double-tapered bow-tie structure. The modeling of tapered lasers has so far been limited to steady-state operation or has lacked experimental comparison. This paper considers both experimentally and theoretically the gain-switched performance of bow-tie lasers of various taper angles. The role of transverse-mode spatial hole burning in tapered waveguide lasers is thereby investigated.

An analytical model for the spin filtering transport in a ferromagnetic-metal - Al2O3 - n-type semiconductor tunneling structure has been developed, and demonstrated that the ratio of the helicity-modulated photo-response to the chopped one is proportional to the sum of the relative asymmetry in conductance of two opposite spin-polarized tunneling channels and the MCD effect of the ferromagnetic metal film. The performed measurement in an iron-metal/Al2O3/n-type GaAs tunneling structure under the optical spin orientation has verified that all the aspects of the experimental results are very well in accordance with our model in the regime of the spin filtering. After the MCD effect of the iron film is calibrated by an independent measurement, the physical quantity of Delta G(t)/G(t) (Delta G(t) = G(t)(up arrow) - G(t)(down arrow) is the difference of the conductance between two opposite spin tunneling channels, G(t) =( G(t)(up arrow) + G(t)(down arrow))/2 the averaged tunneling conductance), which concerns us most, can be determined quantitatively with a high sensitivity in the framework of our analytical model. The eight-band effective-mass Hamiltonian of the free-standing narrow-gap InAs quantum ellipsoids is developed, and the electron and hole electronic structures as well as optical properties are calculated by using the model. The energies, wave functions and transition probabilities of quantum spheres as functions of the radius of quantum sphere R is presented. It is found that the energy levels do not vary as 1/R-2, which is caused by the coupling between the conduction and valence bands, and by the constant terms correspond to the spin-orbit splitting energy. The blueshifts of hole states depend strongly on the coupling from electron states, so that the order of hole states changes as has been predicted in experiment. The exciton binding energies are calculated, the calculated excitonic gaps as functions of the ground exciton transition energy are in good agreement with the photoluminescence measured spectra in details. Finally, the hole energy levels and the linear polarization factors in InAs quantum ellipsoids as functions of the aspect ratio are presented. The state 1S(Z up arrow)((1/2)) becomes the hole ground state when e is larger than 2.4. The saturation value of the linear polarization factors of the InAs long ellipsoids of diameter 2.0 nm is 0.86, in agreement with the experimental results.

The extractions of the selected rare earths (Sc, Y, La and Gd) from hydrochloric acid solutions have been investigated using bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)-mono thiophosphinic acid (Cyanex 302, HL) in heptane as an extractant. The results demonstrate that the extractions of rare earths occur via the following reaction: Sc(OH)(2+) + 2[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Sc(OH)L-2 (.) 2(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) Y3+ + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Y(HL2)(3)]((O)) + 3H(+) La(OH)(2)(+) + 3[(HL)(2)](O) double left right arrow [La(OH)(2)L (.) 5(HL)]((O)) + H+ Gd(OH)(2+) + 3[(HL)(2)]((O)) double left right arrow [Gd(OH)L-2 (.) 4(HL)]((O)) + 2H(+) The pH(1/2) values and equilibrium constants of the extracted complexes have been deduced by taking into account the aqueous phase complexation of the metal ion with hydroxyl ligands and plausible complexes extracted into the organic phase. According to the pH(1/2) values, it is possible to realize mutual separation among Sc(III), Y(III), La(III) and Gd(III) with Cyanex 302 by controlling aqueous acidity.

The synergistic extraction of Sc(III) from H2SO4 solution with bis(2, 4, 4-trimethylpentyl)monothiophosphinic acid(HBTMPTP, HL) and branched chain alkyl phosphine oxide mixture (Cyanex 925, B) in n-hexane has been investigated, The results indicated that synergistic effect was showed in low acidity (c(H2SO4) < 0.25 mol/L). The composition of the extracted complex of Sc(III) has been determined to be Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2) by the method of slope analysis, The mechanism of the synergistic extraction of Sc(III) may be : Sc3+ + 2(HL)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(K12)Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) ScL(HL2)(2(O)) + 3B((O)) + H+ + 1/2SO(4)(2-)reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 1/2(HL)(2(O)) Sc(SO4)(1.5)B-2(O) + B-(O) + 2(HL)(2(O))reversible arrow(beta')Sc(HL2)(2)B-3(SO4)(1/2(O)) + 2H(+) + SO42- Their equilibrium constants have been calculated to be lgK(13)=6.77+/-0.12, lg beta'=7.71, lg beta '' = 0.10, respectively, The IR spectra and FAB-MS of the saturated synergistic extraction complex of Sc(III) have been discussed as well.

A series of samples having the composition of La2-xSrxNiO4(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) were prepared and used as catalysts for NH3 oxidation. It was found that the La and oxygen vacancies exist in the La2-xSrxNiO4-lambda(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1). The unit cell volume decreases with the increase of x. For bath c and a parameters there appeared a turning point at x = 0.5. Doping with a lower valence cation Sr2+ in the case of La2NiO4 resulted in an increase of Ni3+, consequently the formation of oxygen vacancies, the increase of reducing ability and the increase of catalytic activity. In the oxygen TPD of La2-xSrxNiO4(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1) appeared three peaks, the alpha' peak at about 400K was attributed to the surplus oxygen desorption, the a peak at 700K which approaches to a maxium at x = 0.6 was attributed to the oxygen adsorbed at oxygen vacancies. The beta peak at about 1000K which depends closely on the x and favors the catalytic activity was attributed to the reduction of Ni3+. The catalytic activity of La-2-x SrxNiO4 mixed oxides in the NH3 oxidation in general could be attributed to the extent of the redox reaction: 2Ni(2+) + O-2 + V-0(..) reversible arrow 2Ni(3+) + 20(-) where V-0(..) representes the oxygen vacancies and O- the oxygen species adsorbed at the vacancies.

Probe beam deflection(PBD) technique together with electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry was used to study the ion exchange in prussian blue(PB) film and its analogue indium hexacyanoferrate (InHCF) chemically modified electrodes, The ion exchange mechanism of PB was verified as following: K2Fe2+FeI(CN)(6)(-e--K+)reversible arrow(+e-+K+)KFe(3+)Fe(I)(CN)(6)(-xe--xK+)reversible arrow(+xe-+xK+) [Fe3+FeI(CN)(6)](x)[KFe3+FeI(CN)(6)](1-x) where on reduction in contact with an acidic KCl electrolyte, H+ enter PB film before K+. Both the cations and anions participate concurrently in the redox process of InHCF, meanwhile K+ ion plays a major role in the whole charge transfer process of this film with increasing radii of anions.

The interaction of [(C(5)H(4)R)(2)NdCl.2LiCl] (R = H, Bu(t)) with one equivalent of Li[(CH2)(CH2)PPh(2)] in refluxing tetrahydrofuran gave the purplish-blue complex [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] in 50% yield. The compounds have been fully characterized by analytical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. Variable temperature P-31{H-1} NMR spectroscopy indicated the existence of the following equilibrium: [(C(5)H(4)R)(3)NdCH2P(Me)Ph(2)] + THF reversible arrow (C(5)H(4)R)(3)Nd(THF) + CH2=P(Me)Ph(2). At room temperature, the exchange between the coordinated and free ylide ligand is slow on the NMR time scale.

A novel in-situ spectroelectrochemical technique, the combination of probe beam deflection (PBD) with cyclic voltammetry (CV), was used to study the ion exchange process of prussian blue(PB) modified film electrode in contact with various electrolyte solutions. In this paper the electrochemical properties of isopolymolybdic anion thin film modified carbon fibre (CF) microelectrode prepared by simple dip coating have been described. The modified electrode shows three couples of surface redox waves between + 0.70 and - 0.1 V vs. sce in 2 M H2SO4 solution with good stability and reversibility. The pH of solution has a marked effect on the electrochemical behaviour and stability of the film, the stronger the acidity of electrolyte solution is, the better the stability and reversibility of isopolymolybdic anion film CF microelectrode will be. The scanning potential range strongly influences on the electrochemical behaviour of the film. The isopolymolybdic anion film prepared by the dip coating resulting a monolayer with estimated surface concentration (F) 2.8 x 10(-11) mol cm-2. From the half-peak widths and peak areas of the surface redox waves of the film electrode, the first three surface waves are corresponding to two-electron processes. The electron energy spectra show the products by six electrons reduction are a mixture of Mo(VI) and Mo(V) species. The electrochemical reaction of the isopolymolybdic anion monolayer can be expressed as Mo8O264- + mH+ + 2ne half arrow right over half arrow left [HmMo8-2n(VI)Mo2n(V)O26](4,2n-m)-n = 1, 2, 3; m = 2, 5, 7.
