This study investigates the variation of photon field penumbra shape with initial electron beam diameter, for very narrow beams. A Varian Millenium MLC (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, USA) and a Brainlab m3 microMLC (Brainlab AB. Feldkirchen, Germany) were used, with one Varian iX linear accelerator, to produce fields that were (nominally) 0.20 cm across. Dose profiles for these fields were measured using radiochromic film and compared with the results of simulations completed using BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc, where the initial electron beam was set to FWHM = 0.02, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.50 cm. Increasing the electron-beam FWHM produced increasing occlusion of the photon source by the closely spaced collimator leaves and resulted in blurring of the simulated profile widths from 0.26 to 0.64 cm, for the MLC, from 0.12 to 0.43 cm, for the microMLC. Comparison with measurement data suggested that the electron spot size in the clinical linear accelerator was between FWHM = 0.10 and 0.15 cm, encompassing the result of our previous output-factor based work, which identified a FWHM of 0.12. Investigation of narrow-beam penumbra variation has been found to be a useful procedure, with results varying noticeably with linear accelerator spot size and allowing FWHM estimates obtained using other methods to be verified.

High temperature reaction calorimetry using molten lead berate as solvent has been used to study the thermochemistry of NdMnO3, YMnO3, La1-xSrxMnO3 (with 0 < x < 0.5), and Ln(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) (with Ln = La, Nd, Y), The enthalpies of formation of these multicomponent oxides from their binary constituents have been calculated from the measured enthalpy of drop solution, The energetic stability of the perovskite depends on the size of the A cation, The enthalpy of formation of YMnO3 (smallest A cation) is more endothermic than those of NdMnO3 and LaMnO3. The energetics of the perovskite also depends on the oxidation state of the B site's ions. In the La1-xSrxMnO3 system, the energetic stability of the structure increases with the Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio, The new values of the enthalpies of oxidations, with reliable standard entropies, were used to plot the phase stability diagram of the lanthanum-manganese-oxygen system in the temperature range 300-1100 K, The LaMnO3/MnO phase boundary evaluated in this study agrees with the one published by Atsumi et nl. calculated from thermogravimetric and conductivity measurements.

There are essentially two different phenomenological models available to describe the interdiffusion process in binary systems in the olid state. The first of these, which is used more frequently, is based on the theory of flux partitioning. The second model, developed much more recently, uses the theory of dissociation and reaction. Although the theory of flux partitioning has been widely used, we found that this theory does not account for the mobility of both species and therefore is not suitable for use in most interdiffusion systems. We have first modified this theory to take into account the mobility of both species and then further extended it to develop relations or the integrated diffusion coefficient and the ratio of diffusivities of the species. The versatility of these two different models is examined in the Co-Si system with respect to different end-member compositions. From our analysis, we found that the applicability of the theory of flux partitioning is rather limited but the theory of dissociation and reaction can be used in any binary system.

The applicability of a formalism involving an exponential function of composition x1 in interpreting the thermodynamic properties of alloys has been studied. The excess integral and partial molar free energies of mixing are expressed as: $$\begin{gathered} \Delta F^{xs} = a_o x_1 (1 - x_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _1 = a_o (1 - x_1 )^2 (1 + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _2 = a_o x_1^2 (1 - b + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The equations are used in interpreting experimental data for several relatively weakly interacting binary systems. For the purpose of comparison, activity coefficients obtained by the subregular model and Krupkowski’s formalism have also been computed. The present equations may be considered to be convenient in describing the thermodynamic behavior of metallic solutions.

Multi-access techniques are widely used in computer networking and distributed multiprocessor systems. On-the-fly arbitration schemes permit one of the many contenders to access the medium without collisions. Serial arbitration is cost effective but is slow and hence unsuitable for high-speed multiprocessor environments supporting very high data transfer rates. A fully parallel arbitration scheme takes less time but is not practically realisable for large numbers of contenders. In this paper, a generalised parallel-serial scheme is proposed which significantly reduces the arbitration time and is practically realisable.

The coexistence curve of the carbondisulphide-acetic anhydride system has been measured. The shape of the curve in the critical region (Xc ≈ 70.89 mole % mole % CS2 and Tc ≈ 30.56° C) is determined by the equation |X′ - X″| = Bx (1 - T/Tc)β with the critical indices β = 0.34 ± 0.01 and Bx = 1.7 ± 0.1 over a range 10-6 < (Tc - T)/Tc < 10-2. The values of β and Bx agree with those of other systems and the theoretical predictions of the Ising model.

The thermal ignition behaviour of various mixtures of organic fuels, magnesium and ammonium nitrate (AN) has been examined by differential thermal analysis technique. It has been observed that the thermal decomposition/ignition of organic fuel-AN mixtures is modified significantly in the presence of magnesium metal. The decomposition characteristics of the binary mixtures of AN with various metals indicate the specific action of magnesium and zinc in lowering the decomposition temperature. A possible explanation for the low temperature decomposition is given in terms of the solid state reaction causing the fusion of AN which further reacts with the metal resulting in a highly exothermic reaction.

Recent experimental investigations of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the systems M-Pb-O, where M = Ca, Sr or Ba, indicate a regular increase in thermodynamic stability of ternary oxides, MPbO3 and M2PbO4, with increasing basicity of the oxide of the alkaline-earth metal. Number of stable interoxide compounds at 1100 K in the systems M-Pb-O (M = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) increases in unit increments from Mg to Ba. In this paper, experimentally determined standard Gibbs energies of formation of M2PbO4 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) and MPbO3 (M = Sr, Ba) from their component binary monoxides and oxygen gas are combined with an estimated value for CaPbO3 to delineate systematic trends in thermodynamic stability of the ternary oxides. The trends are interpreted using concepts of tolerance factor and acid-base interactions. All the ternary oxides in these systems contain lead in the tetravalent state. The small Pb4+ ions polarize the surrounding oxygen ions and cause the formation of oxyanions which are acidic in character. Hence, the higher oxidation state of lead is stabilized in the presence of basic oxides of alkaline-earth group. A schematic subsolidus temperature-composition phase diagram is presented for the system BaO-PbO-O-2 to illustrate the change in oxidation states in binary and ternary oxides with temperature.

The phase relations in the systems Cu–O–R2O3(R = Tm, Lu) have been determined at 1273 K by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of samples equilibrated in evacuated quartz ampules and in pure oxygen. Only ternary compounds of the type Cu2R2O5 were found to be stable. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of the compounds have been measured using solid-state galvanic cells of the type, Pt|Cu2O + Cu2R2O5+ R2O3‖(Y2O3)ZrO2‖CuO + Cu2O‖Pt in the temperature range 950–1325 K. The standard Gibbs energy changes associated with the formation of Cu2R2O5 compounds from their binary component oxides are: 2CuO(s)+ Tm2O3(s)→Cu2Tm2O5(s), ΔG°=(10400 – 14.0 T/K)± 100 J mol–1, 2CuO(s)+ Lu2O3(s)→Cu2Lu2O5(s), ΔG°=(10210 – 14.4 T/K)± 100 J mol–1 Since the formation is endothermic, the compounds become thermodynamically unstable with respect to component oxides at low temperatures, Cu2Tm2O5 below 743 K and Cu2Lu2O5 below 709 K. When the chemical potential of oxygen over the Cu2R2O5 compounds is lowered, they decompose according to the reaction, 2Cu2R2O5(s)→2R2O3(s)+ 2Cu2O(s)+ O2(g) The equilibrium oxygen potential corresponding to this reaction is obtained from the emf. Oxygen potential diagrams for the Cu–O–R2O3 systems at 1273 K are presented.

Thermodynamic constraints on component chemical potentials in three-phase fields introduced by the various isograms suggested in the literature are derived for a ternary system containing compounds. When compositions of two compounds lie on an isogram, it is associated with specific characteristics which can be used to obtain further understanding of the interplay of thermodynamic factors that determine phase equilibria. When two compounds are shared by adjacent three-phase fields, the constraints are dictated by binary compositions generated by the intersection of a line passing through the shared compounds with the sides of the ternary triangle. Generalized expressions for an arbitrary line through the triangle are presented. These are consistent with special relations obtained along Kohler, Colinet and Jacob isograms. Five axioms are introduced and proved. They provide valuable tools for checking consistency of thermodynamic measurements and for deriving thermodynamic properties from phase diagrams. The 1D electric field and heat-conduction equations are solved for a slab where the dielectric properties vary spatially in the sample. Series solutions to the electric field are obtained for systems where the spatial variation in the dielectric properties can be expressed as polynomials. The series solution is used to obtain electric-field distributions for a binary oil-water system where the dielectric properties are assumed to vary linearly within the sample. Using the finite-element method temperature distributions are computed in a three-phase oil, water and rock system where the dielectric properties vary due to the changing oil saturation in the rock. Temperature distributions predicted using a linear variation in the dielectric properties are compared with those obtained using the exact nonlinear variation.

Isothermal sections of the phase diagrams for the systems Ln-Pd-O (Ln = lanthanide element) at 1223 K indicate the presence of two inter-oxide compounds Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, three compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Eu, Gd and only one compound of Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) for Ln = Tb to Ho. The lattice parameters of the compounds Ln(4)PdO(7), Ln(2)PdO(4) and Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5) show systematic nonlinear variation with atomic number. The unit cell volumes decrease with increasing atomic number. The standard Gibbs energies, enthalpies and entropies of formation of the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides (Ln(2)O(3) and PdO) have been measured recently using an advanced version of the solid-state electrochemical cell. The Gibbs energies and enthalpies of formation become less negative with increasing atomic number of Ln. For all the three compounds, the variation in Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation with atomic number is markedly non-linear. The decrease in stability with atomic number is most pronounced for Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), followed by Ln(4)PdO(7) and Ln(2)PdO(4). This is probably related to the repulsion between Pd2+ ions on the opposite phases Of O-8 cubes in Ln(2)Pd(2)O(5), and the presence of Ln-filled O-8 cubes that share three faces with each other in Ln4PdO7. The values for entropy of formation of all the ternary oxides from their component binary oxides are relatively small. Although the entropies of formation show some scatter, the average value for Ln = La, Pr, Nd is more negative than the average value for the other lanthanide elements. From this difference, an average value for the structure transformation entropy of Ln(2)O(3) from C-type to A-type is estimated as 0.87 J.mol(-1).K-1. The standard Gibbs energies of formation of these ternary oxides from elements at 1223 K are presented as a function of lanthanide atomic number. By invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule for heat capacity, thermodynamic properties of the inter-oxide compounds at 298.15 K are estimated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The specified range of free chlorine residual (between minimum and maximum) in water distribution systems needs to be maintained to avoid deterioration of the microbial quality of water, control taste and/or odor problems, and hinder formation of carcino-genic disinfection by-products. Multiple water quality sources for providing chlorine input are needed to maintain the chlorine residuals within a specified range throughout the distribution system. The determination of source dosage (i.e., chlorine concentrations/chlorine mass rates) at water quality sources to satisfy the above objective under dynamic conditions is a complex process. A nonlinear optimization problem is formulated to determine the chlorine dosage at the water quality sources subjected to minimum and maximum constraints on chlorine concentrations at all monitoring nodes. A genetic algorithm (GA) approach in which decision variables (chlorine dosage) are coded as binary strings is used to solve this highly nonlinear optimization problem, with nonlinearities arising due to set-point sources and non-first-order reactions. Application of the model is illustrated using three sample water distribution systems, and it indicates that the GA,is a useful tool for evaluating optimal water quality source chlorine schedules.

A three-dimensional transient mathematical model (following a fixed-grid enthalpy-based continuum formulation) is used to study the interaction of double-diffusive natural convection and non-equilibrium solidification of a binary mixture in a cubic enclosure cooled from a side. Investigations are carried out for two separate test systems, one corresponding to a typical model "metal-alloy analogue" system and other corresponding to a real metal-alloy system. Due to stronger effects of solutal buoyancy in actual metal-alloy systems than in corresponding analogues, the convective transport mechanisms for the two cases are quite different. However, in both cases, similar elements of three-dimensionality are observed in the curvature and spacing of the projected streamlines. As a result of three-dimensional convective flow patterns, a significant solute macrosegregation is observed across the transverse sections of the cavity, which cannot be captured by two-dimensional simulations.
