"If you don't want to take risks, then you have to be silent" : an interview with Howard Zinn.

An interview with intellectual Howard Zinn is presented. When asked on the responsibilities of a public intellectual, he mentioned doing something that would benefit the society and not just satisfying one's own personal ambition. He states that there are risks on coming up with ideas as a public intellectual, including the opinions of the people. He discusses the benefits and problems of being allied to a university as a public intellectual.

The end of the Keating-Howard-Rudd-Gillard era?

Australian political discourse is dominated by ahistorical hyperbole, every election defeat is a landslide, every consecutive electoral loss indicates complete political marginalisation, every poll slump is a crisis, and every struggling leader is the worst ever. Australian Labor is not faring well but we need to distinguish between the ebbs and flows of the political cycle and the fundamentals. Australian politics may be approaching a fundamental break. The political era that began in the early 1990s may be coming to an end and with it Labor's hegemonic position in Australian politics that has endured since Gough Whitlam.

The continued importance of a feminist analysis: gendered inequalities visible through a critique of Howard government policy on domestic violence

This paper argues that feminist analyses remain crucial to any critical analysis of social policy. From the outset, it needs to be said that we are not suggesting that other critical analyses are less important, such as anti-racist analysis, for example (Dominelli 2002a, 2002b). We also acknowledge the significance of intersectionality theory which identifies the ways in which race and racism may compound gender inequality to shape experiences of oppression or privilege (Mullings & Schultz 2006; Weber 2006). Having said this, in this paper we argue that feminist analyses remain as important as ever, in challenging dominant patriarchal/capitalist discourse currently informing social policy in Australia.

As a counter discourse, feminism puts women’s experiences and the unequal relationships of patriarchy at the forefront of analysis, highlights gender inequalities entrenched in social institutions and policy, and draws attention to the organisation of society along gender specific lines and the inequalities resulting from the relegation of women to the private sphere (Dominelli 2002a).

Specifically, we will demonstrate that the Howard government’s policy responses to the issue of family violence have reflected a renewed attack on previous gains made by women, and exemplify a neo-liberal, neo-conservative approach to social policy that demands a critical feminist analysis. Given the recent federal election, it seems particularly timely to reassert the importance of a feminist analysis of social policy and to direct the attention of the new federal government towards reversing recent trends to de-politicise violence towards women.

Aspectos morfológicos do fruto, da semente e desenvolvimento pós-seminal de faveira (Clitoria fairchildiana R. A. Howard. - Fabaceae)

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo descrever a morfologia dos frutos, das sementes e o desenvolvimento pós-seminal de faveira (Clitoria fairchildiana R. A. Howard. - Fabaceae). Os frutos e as sementes foram caracterizados quanto à forma e dimens��es. Periodicamente, unidades representativas de cada fase de germinação foram retiradas para as descrições morfológicas. Os frutos s��o do tipo legume, deiscentes e de coloração marrom. As sementes s��o exalbuminosas, de forma orbicular e achatada, com tegumento de coloração castanho-esverdeada. O hilo tem forma elíptica, homocromo e de tamanho pequeno em relação à semente. Os cotilédones s��o livres, de coloração verde, maciços e plano-convexos e o embrião é invaginado. O início do desenvolvimento pós-seminal é marcado pelo rompimento do tegumento e emissão da raiz primária, glabra, de coloração amarelo-esverdeada e de forma cilíndrica. Posteriormente, observa-se o desenvolvimento das raízes secundárias, levemente esbranquiçadas, curtas e filiformes. em seguida, o crescimento do hipocótilo proporciona a emergência dos cotilédones e da plúmula acima do substrato. O epicótilo alonga-se e, em seguida, observa-se a expans��o dos eófilos, simples, opostos, com tricomas simples e esparsos, pecíolos curtos com estípulas em sua base. Posteriormente ao desenvolvimento dos eófilos, ocorre a formação do segundo par de folhas, alternas, trifolioladas, estipuladas e com estipelas na base dos peciólulos.

Efeitos do estresse hídrico sobre o desempenho germinativo da semente de faveira (Clitoria fairchildiana R.A. Howard. - Fabaceae) de diferentes tamanhos

Clitoria fairchildiana R. Howard, vulgamente conhecida como faveira, é uma espécie arbórea utilizada na arborização e recomendada para recuperação de áreas degradada, pois é capaz de atuar como adubo verde. No entanto, há poucos estudos básicos para compreender seus atributos ecológicos e fisiológicos. Desse modo, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar as influências do tamanho da semente e de estresse hídrico sobre a germinação das sementes e vigor de plântulas de faveira. Foram usadas sementes pequenas, médias e grandes, postas para germinar em bandejas, com areia, sob condições de umedecimento de 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da capacidade de retenção de água. A germinação não é afetada pelo tamanho da semente, mas sim pelo vigor, pois as sementes grandes e médias originam plântulas mais vigorosas. Água em excesso reduziu a porcentagem e a velocidade de germinação ao passo que, falta de água, reduziu o crescimento das plântulas.

CHROMOSOME-STUDIES IN MALES AFFECTED BY DUCHENNE OR BECKER MUSCULAR-DYSTROPHY

We studied cytogenetically 48 male patients with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy. All of them showed normal X chromosomes. Fragility of Xp21 was investigated in 1400 G-banded chromosomes of 28 patients and only one break was observed at this band (0.07%). This low frequency of breakage excludes Xp21 as a fragile site in these patients.
