Metals that present bcc crystalline structure, when receiving addition of interstitial atoms as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon, undergo significant changes in their physical properties, being able to dissolve great amounts of those interstitial elements, thus forming solid solutions. Niobium and most of its alloys possess bcc crystalline structure and, as Brazil is the largest world exporter of this metal, it is fundamental to understand the interaction mechanisms between interstitial elements and niobium or its alloys. In this paper, mechanical spectroscopy (internal friction) measurements were performed in Nb-2.0wt%Ti alloys containing nitrogen in solid solution. The experimental results presented complex internal friction spectra and with the addition of substitutional solute, it was observed interactions between the two types of solutes (substitutional and interstitial), considering that the random distribution of the interstitial atoms was affected by the presence of substitutional atoms. Interstitial diffusion coefficients, pre-exponential factors and activation energies were calculated for nitrogen in the Nb-2.0wt%Ti alloys.

Introduction: Perineural invasion is a well-recognized form of cancer dissemination. However, it has been reported only in few papers concerning cutaneous carcinomas ( basal cell, BCC, and squamous cell, SCC). Moreover, the incidence is considered to be very low. Niazi and Lambert [Br J Plast Surg 1993; 46: 156-157] reported only 0.18% of perineural invasion among 3,355 BCCs. It is associated with high-risk subtypes, as morphea-like, as well as with an increased risk of local recurrence. No paper was found in the literature looking for perineural invasion in very aggressive skin cancers with skull base extension, with immunohistochemical analysis. Methods: This is a retrospective review, including 35 very advanced skin carcinomas with skull base invasion (24 BCCs and 11 SCCs, operated on at a single institution from 1982 to 2000). Representative slides were immunohistochemically evaluated with antiprotein S-100, in order to enhance nerve fibers and to detect perineural invasion. The results were compared to 34 controls with tumors with a good outcome, treated in the same time frame at the same Institution. Results: Twelve (50.0%) of the BCCs with skull base invasion had proven perineural invasion, as opposed to only 1 (4.6%) of the controls, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Regarding SCCs, 7 aggressive tumors (63.6%) showed perineural invasion compared to only 1 (10.0%) of the controls, but this difference did not reach significance (p=0.08), due to the small number of cases. Conclusions: In this series, it was demonstrated that immunohistochemically detected perineural invasion was very prevalent in advanced skin carcinomas. In addition, it was statistically associated with extremely aggressive BCCs with skull base invasion. Copyright (c) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel

Acicular monodispersed Fe1-xREx (RE= Nd, Sm,Eu,Tb;x=0, 0.05, 0.10) metallic nanoparticles (60 +/- 5 nm in length and axial ratio similar to6) obtained by reduction of alumina-coated goethite nanoparticles-containing rare earth (RE) under hydrogen flow are reported. Alumina and maghemite thin layers on particle surface were used to protect the goethite particles against sintering and oxidation, respectively. Al and RE additions were obtained by successive heterocoagulation reactions. Aluminum sulfate (10 at.% based on Fe) was dissolved in water and the pH adjusted to 12.5 with NaOH solution. Goethite particles were suspended in this solution and CO2 gas was blown into the slurry to neutralize it to a pH 8.5 or less. Particles were purified and dehydrated to effect transformation to alumina-coated hematite nanoparticles, which were re-suspended in aqueous solution in which RE sulfate (0-0.15 at.% based on Fe) has been dissolved, and the pH increased by ammonia aqueous solution addition. Resulted alumina-coated RE-doped hematite nanoparticles were reduced to metal at 450 degreesC/12 h under hydrogen flow and passivated with nitrogen-containing ethanol vapor at room temperature. Acicular monodispersed metallic nanoparticle systems were obtained and the presence of Al and RE were confirmed by induced-coupled plasma spectrometry analysis. X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization data are in agreement with the nanosized alpha-Fe core in a bcc structure, having a spinel structure, gammaFe(2)O(3), with thickness similar to1.5 run on particle surface. Main magnetic parameters showed saturation magnetization decreases and significant increasing in the coercive field with the RE composition increases. Magnetic properties of these particles, similar to40% smaller than those commercially available, suggest a decrease in the bit-size for high-density magnetic or magneto-optics recording media application. In order to investigate herpesvirus (HHV) role in the susceptibility to skin cancer, we compared HHV6 and HHV1 incidence in DNA samples extracted from 120 lesions and 41 normal skin tissues. HHV6 (31.7%) and HHV1 (23.8%) were detected more frequently in skin cancer than in control individuals (14.6 and 5%, respectively) (P=0.0391 and P=0.00094, respectively). The risk of presenting basal cell carcinomas (BCC) was more than 3 times higher for HHV-6 infected patients (OR=3.182; 95% CI: 1.125-8.997). The risk for HHV-1 infected individuals of presenting BCC and squamous cell carcinomas was increased 8 and 6 times, respectively (OR=8.125; 95% CI: 1.735-38.043 and OR=6.290; 95% CI: 1.283-30.856, respectively). Skin cancers are the most common human malignant neoplasia and their incidence is growing, chiefly in tropical countries. There is evidence that ultraviolet (UV) radiation present in sunlight is important for genetic damage. Mutations due to such damage could be responsible for alterations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Recent studies have reported remarkable differences in mutation frequency of the RAS proto-oncogene in non-melanoma skin cancers. These findings may reflect differences in the molecular epidemiology of cutaneous tumors found in geographical areas with diverse sun exposure and ethnical origins of their populations. Our study proposed to perform molecular analyses of skin tumors on patients living in southeastern Brazil, in areas with high levels of sun exposure. DNA from eight solar keratose (SK), 26 basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and 19 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) was submitted to PCR-SSCP analysis for codons 12, 13 and 61. Contradicting other authors, we found no mutations in codons 12,13 but detected two BCCs and one SCC with a mutation in codon 61. These findings suggest that the activation of KRAS oncogene may contribute to the pathogenicity of cutaneous lesions in southeastern Brazil.

Studies about efficiency have gained dimension, in Brazil, since the early 90’s. Same decade that the Civil Aviation System suffers important changes in terms of regulations. Such transformations have echoed effects currently, with some significant trend for international standards. This paper focuses on one of the agents from the Brazilian Civil Aviation System, the airlines companies, which aimed on analyze and evaluate both passengers and cargo air transport, by using data envelopment analysis (DEA), during the period of 2005 to 2010. The yearbooks of ANAC, corresponding at the period from 2005 to 2010, were used as data base in this present study. The technique was applied to 14 companies, which through Stepwise process of variables validation was possible to compose a compact, but complete model, that could translate the reality of companies. This model was composed by one output, Total Income, and by four inputs, Total Costs, Total Domestic Passenger, Total Cargo and Total International Passengers. However, this approach has some flaws. Therefore in order to remedy it, it was required to apply the method Frontier Inverted, one of the alternatives proposed in the literature, which ensured an improvement in the context of efficiencies due to biggest discrimination of airlines. As a result of the DEA-BCC process, oriented by output, TAM 2005 was considered the most efficient company, however GOL and Webjet companies concentrated in 2007 their worst levels
