High populations (5000 to 20 000/kg soil) of the stubby-root nematode Paratrichodorus porosus were identified morphologically from soil samples taken under patches of poorly growing barley in a field between Yuleba and Surat in western Queensland, Australia. Lower populations (<4000/kg soil) were recovered from soil samples taken from asymptomatic barley. This is the first record of this nematode species on barley in Australia.

Polymyxa graminis was detected in the roots of barley plants from a field near Wondai, Queensland, in 2009. P. graminis was identified by characteristic sporosori in roots stained with trypan blue. The presence of P. graminis f. sp. tepida (which is hosted by wheat and oats as well as barley) in the roots was confirmed by specific PCR tests based on nuclear ribosomal DNA. P. graminis is the vector of several damaging soil-borne virus diseases of cereals in the genera Furovirus, Bymovirus and Pecluvirus. No virus particles were detected in sap extracts from leaves of stunted barley plants with leaf chlorosis and increased tillering. Further work is required to determine the distribution of P. graminis in Australian grain crops and the potential for establishment and spread of the exotic soil-borne viruses that it vectors.

In this volume, 64 new and revised barley genetic stock (BGS) descriptions for 2010 are presented. The current lists of new and revised BGS descriptions are presented by BGS number order and by locus symbol in alphabetical order. Information on the description location, recommended locus name, chromosomal location, previous gene symbols, and the primary genetic stock (GSHO number and/or NGB number) are included in these lists.

To work with a major industry production/marketing unit to develop new pineapple varieties with good plant vigour, high yields and post-harvest attributes and eating quality equal to or better than the standard industry varieties 73-50 and MD2 under commercial production systems. The project uses previously developed germplasm as parental material.

DEEDI is tendering for this project because it considers that macadamia breeding is essential for long-term industry viability and that new productive cultivars will be the basis for the industry to withstand future competition from overseas and from other nut crops.

This project advances commercially desirable citrus selections that have resilient seedlessness. It builds on existing expertise and develops germplasm resources in the utilisation of interploid crossing for the production of new triploid hybrids with outstanding fruit quality. Advanced germplasm will progress toward commercialisation with fruit displays, and the production of a final generation of trees for semi-commercial plantings. At the opposite end of the breeding spectrum, new triploid hybrids will be produced. Growers will see triploid citrus from their national breeding project for the first time, providing a window on future new varieties that will emerge from the pipe-line of germplasm that has been developed through past project investment.

The previous projects (phase I - III) highlighted that northern region wheat and barley cultivars differ considerably in their sensitivity to herbicides. The new project will focus on increased screening of advanced breeding lines and new cultivars lines to commonly used herbicides, for barley, chickpea and wheat. Studies on impact of environment on herbicide x genotype responses will also be undertaken with the national team. The new information will be added to the existing information package on herbicide tolerance. Thus, adverse impacts of herbicides on productivity in northern region will be reduced, as growers and agronomists will select safer herbicides for their sown variety, or select more tolerant varieties for their important herbicides.
