merged beam technique has been used to investigate the fragmentation of the Cl ion in collisions with electrons over an energy range of 0–200 eV. We have measured absolute cross sections for detachment, detachment plus dissociation and dissociation processes. Over the energy range studied, the dominant breakup mechanism is dissociation. Dissociation is relatively enhanced in the e–+Cl collision system due to the suppression of the normally dominant detachment process, as a result of the large difference between the equilibrium internuclear distances of the Cl2 and Cl ground state potential curves. A prominent structure is observed just above the threshold in the Cl–+Cl+e– dissociation channel. It is proposed that the structure is a resonance associated with production and rapid decay of an excited state of the doubly charged Cl ion. A plausible mechanism for production of the di-anionic state based on an excitation plus capture process is suggested.

Effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of the phosphorus-like ion Cl III are presented for all fine- structure transitions among the levels arising from the lowest 23 LS states. The collisional cross sections are computed in the multichannel close-coupling R-matrix approximation, where sophisticated configuration-interaction wave functions are used to represent the target states. The 23 LS states are formed from the basis configurations 3s(2)3p(3). 3s3p(4). 3s(2)3p(2)3d, and 3s(2)3p(2)4s, and correspond to 49 fine- structure levels, leading to a total possible 1176 fine- structure transitions. The effective collision strengths. obtained by averaging the electron collision strengths over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities. are tabulated in this paper for all 1176 transitions and for electron temperatures in the ranges T(K) = 7500-25.000 and log T(K) = 4.4-5.3. The former range encompasses the temperatures of particular importance for application to gaseous nebulae. while the latter range is more applicable to the study of solar and laboratory-type plasmas. A crossed-beams energy-loss spectrometer has been used to investigate angular distributions for electron scattering from Ar2+ and Xe2+ ions, at a collision energy of 16 eV. For Ar2+ the measurements are compared with the predictions of a partial waves calculation based on a semi-empirical potential, where it is shown that the interference term governs the position of the observed minimum in the angular distribution.

In this paper. we present collision strengths and Maxwellian averaged effective collision strengths for the electron-impact excitation of Fe II. We consider specifically the optically allowed lines for transitions from the 3d(6)4s and 3d(7) even parity configuration states to the 3d(6)4p odd parity configuration levels. The parallel suite of Breit-Pauli codes are utilized to compute the collision cross-sections where relativistic effects are included explicitly in both the target and the scattering approximation. A total of 100 LS or 262-jj levels formed from the basis configurations 3d(6)4s, 3d(7) and 3d(6)4p were included in the wave-function representation of the target, including all doublet. quartet and sextet terms. The Maxwellian averaged effective collision strengths are computed across a wide range of electron temperatures from 100 to 100,000 K, temperatures of importance in astrophysical and plasma applications. A detailed comparison is made with previous works and significant differences were found to occur for some of the transitions considered. We conclude that in order to obtain converged collision strengths and effective collision strengths for these allowed transitions it is necessary to include contributions from partial waves up to L = 50 explicitly in the calculation, and in addition, account for contributions from even higher partial waves through a "top up" procedure.

In this paper, we present electron-impact excitation collision strengths and Maxwellian averaged effective collision strengths for the complicated iron-peak ion Cr II. We consider specifically the allowed lines for transitions from the 3d(5) and 3d(4)4s even parity configuration states to the 3d(4)4p odd parity configuration levels. The parallel suite of R-Matrix packages, RMATRX II, which have recently been extended to allow for the inclusion of relativistic effects, were used to compute the collision cross sections. A total of 108 LS pi/280 J pi levels from the basis configurations 3d(5), 3d(4)4s, and 3d(4)4p were included in the wavefunction representation of the target including all doublet, quartet, and sextet terms. Configuration interaction and correlation effects were carefully considered by the inclusion of seven more configurations and a pseudo-corrector (4d) over bar type orbital. The 10 configurations incorporated into the Cr II model thus listed are 3d(5), 3d(4)4s, 3d(4)4p, 3d(3)4s(2), 3d(3)4p(2), 3d(3)4s4p, 3d(4)(4d) over bar, 3d(3)4s (4d) over bar, 3d(3)4p (4d) over bar, and 3d(3)(4d) over bar (2), constituting the largest Cr II target model considered to date in a scattering calculation. The Maxwellian averaged effective collision strengths are computed for a wide range of electron temperatures 2000-100,000 K which are astrophysically significant. Care has been taken to ensure that the partial wave contributions to the collision strengths for these allowed lines have converged with "top-up" from the Burgess-Tully sum rule incorporated. Comparisons are made with the results of Bautista et al. and significant differences are found for some of the optically allowed lines considered.

We report in this paper the computation of accurate total collision strengths and effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of FeII, using the parallel R-matrix program PRMAT. Target states corresponding to the 3d(6)4s, 3d(7), 3d(6)4p and 3d(5)4s4s basis configurations were included in the calculations giving rise to a 113 LS state 354 coupled channel problem. Following a detailed systematic study of correlation effects in both the target state and collision wavefunctions, it was found that an additional 21 configuration functions needed to be included in the Configuration Interaction expansion to obtain significantly more accurate target states and collision wavefunctions. This much improved 26-configuration model has been used to calculate converged total effective collision strengths for all sextet to quartet transitions among these levels with total spin S=2, giving a total of 1785 lines. These calculations have laid the foundation for an approach which may be adopted in the study of electron collisions with the low ionization stages of other iron peak elements. The work has been further extended with the commencement of a Breit-Pauli relativistic calculation for one of the smaller models and includes 262 fine-structure levels and over 1800 coupled channels. At the same time the PRMAT parallel R-matrix package is being extended to include relativistic effects which will allow us to attempt the more sophisticated 26-configuration model and produce for the first time the amount and quality of atomic data required to perform a meaningful synthesis of the Fe II spectrum.

Context. Absorption or emission lines of Fe II are observed in many astrophysical spectra and accurate atomic data are required to interpret these lines. The calculation of electron-impact excitation rates for transitions among even the lowest lying levels of Fe II is a formidable task for theoreticians.

Aims. In this paper, we present collision strengths and effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of Fe II for low-lying forbidden transitions among the lowest 16 fine-structure levels arising from the four LS states 3d(6)4s D-6(e), 3d(7) F-4(e), 3d(6)4s D-4(e), and 3d(7) P-4(e). The effective collision strengths are calculated for a wide range of electron temperatures of astrophysical importance from 30-100 000 K.

Methods. The parallel suite of Breit-Pauli codes are utilised to compute the collision cross sections for electron-impact excitation of Fe II and relativistic terms are included explicitly in both the target and the scattering approximation. 100 LS or 262-jj levels formed from the basis configurations 3d(6)4s, 3d(7), and 3d(6)4p were included in the wavefunction representation of the target, including all doublet, quartet, and sextet terms. Collision strengths for a total of 34191 individual transitions were computed.

Results. A detailed comparison is made with previous theoretical works and significant differences were found to occur in the effective collision strengths, particularly at low temperatures.

The current design plans for the International Thermonuclear\nExperimental Reactor ( ITER) call for tungsten to be employed for\ncertain plasma facing components in the divertor region. Thus, accurate\natomic collision data are needed for emission modelling of tungsten.\nElectron-impact excitation and radiative rates are of particular\nimportance for Ni-like W, since this ion emits some of the most intense\nspectral lines of all ionization stages. We report on a fully\nrelativistic 115-level R-matrix calculations of W46+, which includes the\neffects of radiation damping. Although radiation damping is very\nimportant in most highly ionized species, its effects are reduced in\nthis case because of the closed-shell Ni-like ground state. The rates\nfrom these relativistic atomic calculations will be employed for\ncollisional-radiative modelling of this ion.

For a number of years, there has been a major effort to calculate electron-impact excitation data for every ion stage of iron embodied by the ongoing efforts of the IRON project by Hummer et al (1993 Astron. Astrophys. 279 298). Due to the complexity of the targets, calculations for the lower stages of ionization have been limited to either intermediate-coupling calculations within the ground configurations or LS -coupling calculations of the ground and excited configurations. However, accurate excitation data between individual levels within both the ground and excited configurations of the low charge-state ions are urgently required for applications to both astrophysical and laboratory plasmas. Here we report on the results of the first intermediate-coupling R -matrix calculation of electron-impact excitation for Fe 4+ for which the close-coupling (CC) expansion includes not only those levels of the 3d 4 ground configuration, but also the levels of the 3d 3 4s, 3d 3 4p, 3d 3 4d and 3d 2 4s 2 excited configurations. With 359 levels in the CC expansion and over 2400 scattering channels for many of the J Π partial waves, this represents the largest electron–ion scattering calculation to date and it was performed on massively parallel computers using a recently developed set of relativistic parallel R -matrix programs.

In this study we calculate the electron-impact uncertainties in atomic data for direct ionization and recombination and investigate the role of these uncertainties on spectral diagnostics. We outline a systematic approach to assigning meaningful uncertainties that vary with electron temperature. Once these uncertainty parameters have been evaluated, we can then calculate the uncertainties on key diagnostics through a Monte Carlo routine, using the Astrophysical Emission Code (APEC) [Smith et al. 2001]. We incorporate these uncertainties into well known temperature diagnostics, such as the Lyman alpha versus resonance line ratio and the G ratio. We compare these calculations to a study performed by [Testa et al. 2004], where significant discrepancies in the two diagnostic ratios were observed. We conclude that while the atomic physics uncertainties play a noticeable role in the discrepancies observed by Testa, they do not explain all of them. This indicates that there is another physical process occurring in the system that is not being taken into account. Context: Emission from Ar III is seen in planetary nebulae, in H II regions, and from laboratory plasmas. The analysis of such spectra requires accurate electron impact excitation data. Aims: The aim of this work is to improve the electron impact excitation data available for Ar2+, for application in studies of planetary nebulae and laboratory plasma spectra. The effects of the new data on diagnostic line ratios are also studied. Methods: Electron-impact excitation collision strengths have been calculated using the R-Matrix Intermediate-Coupling Frame-Transformation method and the R-Matrix Breit-Pauli method. Excitation cross sections are calculated between all levels of the configurations 3s^23p^4, 3s3p^5, 3p^6, 3p^53d, and 3s^23p^3nl (3d ≤ nl ≤ 5s). Maxwellian effective collision strengths are generated from the collision strength data. Results: Good agreement is found in the collision strengths calculated using the two R-Matrix methods. The collision strengths are compared with literature values for transitions within the 3s^23p4 configuration. The new data has a small effect on Te values obtained from the I(λ7135 Å+ λ7751 Å)/ I(λ5192 Å) line ratio, and a larger effect on the Ne values obtained from the I(λ7135 Å)/I(λ9 μm) line ratio. The final effective collision strength data is archived online.

The fragmentation patterns and mass spectra of some phenyl tin and -lead halide adducts with hexamethylphosphoramide are compared by subjecting them t~ electron impact and fast atom bombardment ionization in a mass spectrometer. This comparison is restricted to the metal-containing ions. Ligand-exchange mechanisms of some of the metal-containing species are explored by FAB-MS. Several moisturesensitive organo-metallics and H-bonded systems have been examined by FAB for attempted characterization, but without any success. Scavenging and trapping of water molecules by complex aggregates in solutions of quaternary ammonium fluorides and hydroxides are investigated by FAB to complement previous NMR-studies.

We use a factor-augmented vector autoregression (FAVAR) to estimate the impact of monetary policy shocks on the cross-section of stock returns. Our FAVAR combines unobserved factors extracted from a large set of nancial and macroeconomic indicators with the Federal Funds rate. We nd that monetary policy shocks have heterogeneous e ects on the crosssection of stock returns. These e ects are very well explained by the degree of external nance dependence, as well as by other sectoral characteristics.

We present a measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in p (p) over bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV utilizing 425 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider the final state of the top quark pair containing one high-p(T) electron or muon and at least four jets. We exploit specific kinematic features of t (t) over bar events to extract the cross section. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(t (t) over bar)=6.4(-1.2)(+1.3)(stat)+/- 0.7(syst)+/- 0.4(lum) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.

We present a measurement of the top quark pair (t (t) over bar) production cross section (sigma(t (t) over bar)) in pp collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 230 pb(-1) of data collected by the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the t F purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(t (t) over bar) 8.6(-1.5)(+1.6) (stat. + syst.) +/- 0.6(lumi.) pb, in agreement with the standard model expectation.
