There is a recent interest to use inorganic-based magnetic nanoparticles as a vehicle to carry biomolecules for various biophysical applications, but direct attachment of the molecules is known to alter their conformation leading to attenuation in activity. In addition, surface immobilization has been limited to monolayer coverage. It is shown that alternate depositions of negatively charged protein molecules, typically bovine serum albumin (BSA) with a positively charged aminocarbohydrate template such as glycol chitosan (GC) on magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle surface as a colloid, are carried out under pH 7.4. Circular dichroism (CD) clearly reveals that the secondary structure of the entrapped BSA sequential depositions in this manner remains totally unaltered which is in sharp contrast to previous attempts. Probing the binding properties of the entrapped BSA using small molecules (Site I and Site II drug compounds) confirms for the first time the full retention of its biological activity as compared with native BSA, which also implies the ready accessibility of the entrapped protein molecules through the porous overlayers. This work clearly suggests a new method to immobilize and store protein molecules beyond monolayer adsorption on a magnetic nanoparticle surface without much structural alteration. This may find applications in magnetic recoverable enzymes or protein delivery.

Headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) has been used to isolate the headspace volatiles formed during oxidation of oil-in-water emulsions. Qualitative and quantitative analyses with an internal standard were performed by GC-FID. Four sample temperatures for adsorption (30, 40, 50 and 60 C) and adsorption times in the range 10-25 min were tested to determine the conditions for the volatile concentration to reach equilibrium. The optimum conditions were at 50 C for 20 min. The method was applied to monitor changes in volatile composition during oxidation of an o/w emulsion. SPME was a simple, reproducible and sensitive method for the analysis of volatile oxidation products in oil-in-water emulsions. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two porous mixed valent diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate compounds have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Crystalline solids of [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl] center dot 3.5H(2)O (tere=terephthalate) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl] center dot 1.5H(2)O (adip=adipate) consist of extended chains in which polymeric layers of multiply metal-metal bonded [Ru(2)](5+) cores are bridged by dicarboxylate ligands in paddlewheel type geometries. Units of [Ru(2)(dicarboxylate)(2)](n)(+) are linked by axial bridging chloride ions generating three-dimensional networks. The polymers loose non-bonded water molecules at low temperatures but do not undergo thermal decomposition below 280-300 degrees C. Both of compounds exhibit high BET surface areas, [Ru(2)(tere)(2)Cl]: 235 m(2) g(-1) and [Ru(2)(adip)(2)Cl]: 281 m(2) g(-1), and occlude similar numbers of mol of N(2) per mol of metal. The terephthalate ligand generated an organized structure with supermicropores (total pore size of 0.24 cm(3) g(-1)) while the adipate ligand led to a mesoporous structure (total pore sizes of 0.47 cm(3) g(-1)) for the corresponding diruthenium(II,III)-dicarboxylate polymers. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exist widely in both the indoor and outdoor environment. The main contributing sources of VOCs are motor vehicle exhaust and solvent utilization. Some VOCs are toxic and carcinogenic to human health, such as benzene. In this study, TiO2–SiO2 based photocatalysts were synthesized using the sol–gel method, with high surface areas of 274.1–421.1 m2/g obtained. Two types of pellets were used as catalysts in a fixed-bed reactor installed with a UV black light lamp. Experiments were conducted to compare their efficiencies in degrading the VOCs. Toluene was used as the VOC indicator. When the toluene laden gas stream passed through the photocatalytic reactor, the removal efficiencies were determined using a FTIR multi-gas analyser, which was connected to the outlet of the reactor to analyse the toluene concentrations. As the TiO2–SiO2 pellets used have a high adsorption capacity, they had dual functions as a photocatalyst and adsorbent in the hybrid photocatalysis and adsorption system. The experiments demonstrated that the porous photocatalyst with very high adsorptive capacity enhanced the subsequent photocatalysis reactions and lead to a positive synergistic effect. The catalyst can be self-regenerated by photocatalytic oxidation of the adsorbed VOCs. When the UV irradiation and feeding gas is continuous, a destruction efficiency of about 25% was achieved over a period of 20 h. Once the system was designed and operated into adsorption/regeneration mode, a higher removal efficiency of about 55% was maintained. It was found that the catalyst pellets with a higher surface area (421 m2/g) achieved higher conversion efficiency (100%) for a longer period than those with a lower surface area. A full spectrum scan was carried out using a Bio-rad Infrared spectrometer, finding that the main components of the treated gas stream leaving the reactor, along with untreated toluene, were CO2 and water. The suspected intermediates of aliphatic hydrocarbons and CO were found in minimal amounts or were non detectable. The kinetic rate constants were calculated from the experimental results, it appeared that the stronger adsorption capacity, i.e. larger specific surface area, the higher conversion efficiency would be achieved.

The self-assembling behavior of a single-chain quaternary ammonium amphiphile bearing azobenzene (C12AzoC6N+) on freshly cleaved mica sheet has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) method. Confocal microscopic Raman spectra confirm the adsorption of the self-assembled monolayer structure. Ex-situ AFM reveals that C12AzoC6N+ forms branch-like stripes indicating the fusion and reorganization of the micelles during drying in air as the in-situ AFM has revealed that surfactant forms spherical micelles on the mica surface. The nano-sized surface structure is strongly dependent on the change of molecular structure, which resulted from photo-induced isomerization. The nano-sized stripe is quite stable even being annealed at 90 °C for 4 h.

Forces between mica surfaces immersed in Me4NBr, Pr4NBr, and Pe4NBr solutions over a wide concentration range are reported (Me = methyl, Pr = propyl, Pe = pentyl). In each case the cation adsorbs quite strongly onto the negatively charged mica surface and determines the double-layer potential. However, this strong adsorption does not cause complete neutralization of the negative lattice charge apparently because of packing constraints due to the large size of these ions. Adsorption of Me4N+ ions gives rise to a short-range (<2 nm) repulsive force similar to that previously observed between bilayers of CTAB and may be due to the residual hydration of these ions. The large rations also, unexpectedly, give rise to short-range repulsive forces but of a somewhat different nature. In this case, the repulsive forces can be explained by assuming that the large adsorbed ions shift the plane of charge a distance of one ion diameter from the mica surface. At all but very high concentrations these larger ions could be displaced from the mica surfaces on forcing them together. No evidence of any “hydrophobic attraction” was observed between surfaces containing these adsorbed ions. Previous studies on coagulation are discussed in the light of our results.

In this study, the inhibitive performance of two pyridine derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel was examined under stagnant condition and hydrodynamic flow in HCl solution at 25. °C. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were employed. To explore the inhibitors adsorption mechanism, Langmuir isotherm and quantum chemical studies were used. The results of electrochemical measurements show that the inhibitor concentration has a positive effect on its efficiency while for hydrodynamic condition, it is vice versa. Corrosion attack morphologies were observed at stagnant and hydrodynamic conditions to verify qualitatively the results obtained by electrochemical methods. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The oxygen reduction reaction in a novel trialkoxy ammonium-based ionic liquid, N-ethyl-2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-N,N-bis(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)ethan-1-aminium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [N2(20201)(20201)(20201)] [NTf2] has been studied on glassy carbon and gold electrodes, showing faster electrokinetics on glass carbon because of weaker adsorption of the IL. This has been demonstrated by theoretical calculations and electrochemical studies. In the neat IL, the oxygen is reduced to superoxide (O2 -) through a one electron process; however, better performance is attained in the presence of water (42 mol%), in terms of current density, and onset potential of the reduction process via a reversible 2-electron process. Furthermore, a remarkable increase in cyclic coulombic efficiency is observed for the wet IL (66% in comparison with the neat IL (24%), showing the practicality of a reversible O2/H2O2 system for energy storage.

Vanadium compounds mimic most of the metabolic effects of insulin, suggesting that it might be useful to improve utilization of dietary carbohydrate. This work evaluated the effect of dietary ammonium metavanadate (H(4)NO(3)V) on the growth performance and energy metabolism of pacu, an omnivorous South America characin. Two hundred and eighty-eight fish were distributed into four blocks according to the body weight (21.8 +/- 1.7, 28.5 +/- 2.0, 28.4 +/- 1.9, 35.7 +/- 1.9 g), stocked in 24 plastic tanks and fed twice daily with isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets containing six levels of H(4)NO(3)V (0, 10, 50, 100, 300 and 1000 mg kg(-1)) for 60 days. Increasing levels of dietary ammonium metavanadate did not improve growth (P > 0.05), and the highest level of inclusion (1000 mg kg(-1)) reduced performance (P < 0.05). Blood glucose levels decreased (P < 0.05) in fish fed 300 and 1000 mg kg(-1) H(4)NO(3)V, but no differences were observed in other blood metabolites. A slight increase in muscle lipid content was observed in fish fed a diet containing 300 mg kg(-1) H(4)NO(3)V. Based on the results of this study, there is no benefit in supplementing pacu diets with metavanadate.

Two experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of supplementation with different nitrogenous compounds on the activities of carboxymethil cellulase (CMCase) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH). In the first experiment, four treatments were evaluated in vitro: cellulose, cellulose with casein, cellulose with urea, and cellulose with casamino acids. After 6, 12 and 24 hours of incubation, CMCase and GDH activity, pH, and concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (AN) and microbial protein were measured. In the three incubation periods, the concentration of AN was higher when urea was used as a supplemental source of nitrogen. The activity of CMCase was higher with the addition of urea and casamino acids when compared with the control and the casein treatment. Supplementation with casamino acids provided higher GDH activity when compared with the control at 6 hours of incubation. At 12 hours of incubation, the GHD activity was also stimulated by casein. At 24 hours, there was no difference in GHD activity among treatments. In the second experiment, three rumen-fistulated bulls were used for in situ evaluation. Animals were fed Tifton hay (Cynodon sp.) ad libitum. The treatments consisted of control (no supplementation), supplementation with non-protein nitrogenous compounds (urea and ammonium sulphate, 9:1) and supplementation with protein (albumin). In treatments with nitrogenous compound supplementation, 1 g of crude protein/kg of body weight was supplied. The experiment was conducted in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. The measurements were performed at 6, 12 and 24 hours after supplementation. No difference in GDH activity was observed among treatments. The control treatment showed higher CMCase activity when compared with the treatments containing supplemental sources of nitrogen. However, urea supplementation provided higher CMCase activity compared to albumin.

Potassium (K) is required in high doses by the banana (Musa sp.) plant and interacts with other nutrient elements in which banana tissues are maintained under in vitro condition as a consequence modifications in the plant metabolism take place mainly in nitrogen (N) compounds, such as proteins, amino acids, and secondary compounds. When K is present in concentrations lower than that required, diamines such as putrescine and poliamines are formed. This metabolic disorder can also be correlated with the presence of different inorganic N forms, such as nitrate (NO3) and ammonium (NH4), and the ratios between both ions as well. In order to follow the physiological performance of the interrelationships, K/putrescine and of the NO3/NH4 ratio in the tissue of banana vitroplantlets, shoot apex of two banana cvs. Nanica and Prata Ana were maintained in modified MS medium in the presence of six different doses of K: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 mM. After the period of tissue proliferation the cultures were transferred to rooting media containing the same different K doses. Dry matter, K, putrescine, and spermidine contents and their accumulation were determined in the shoots and roots of the vitroplantlets and in the shoot apex of the explant donor cultivar as well as the corresponding values for the whole vitroplantlets calculated. The data were statistically analyzed. The contents and accumulations of putrescine and spermidine in banana tissues were enhanced as K concentration decreased in the medium: four times (0.19% of the dry matter) for cv. Nanica and eight times (0.25% of the dry matter) for cv. Prata Ana. This behavior was not only related to the K depletion but to the NO3/NH4 ratio as well.

SrBi2Ta2O9 ferroelectric thick films were prepared by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). For that, ceramic powders were prepared by chemical method in order to obtain compounds with chemical homogeneity. The polymeric precursor method was used for the synthesis of the SrBi2Ta2O9 powder. The crystallographic structure of the powder was examined by X-ray diffraction, and the surface area was determined by single point BET adsorption. The 0.03 vol.% suspension was formed by dispersing the powder in water using two different polymers as dispersants: an ester polyphosphate (C213) and an ammonium polyacrilate (Darvan 821-A). It was investigated the influence of the different dispersants in the surface properties of the powder by zeta potential measurements. The films were deposited on platinum-coated alumina and Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates by a 4 mA constant current, for 10 min, using two parallel electrodes placed at a separation distance of 3 min in the suspension. Several cycles of deposition-drying of the deposit were carried out until reaching the desired thickness. After thermal treatment at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1000 degreesC, the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy for the microstructure observation.
