AA5083 aluminium alloy has been shown to be partially passivated by a 2-step anodic pre-treatment in Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([P6,6,6,14][NTf2]) ionic liquid. Surface characterisation revealed that an electrochemical etching process had occurred, comparable to acid etching of aluminium. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy results have established that magnesium dealloyed from the Mg2Si intermetallic particles and metal fluorides were deposited onto the remaining Mg2Si sites, which subsequently led to decreased anodic corrosion kinetics (to one third of the control) as well as an increase in the corrosion and pitting potentials. This unique electrochemical etching process offers a simple and quick method to improve the corrosion resistance of an aluminium alloy as it leads to a more uniform surface, in terms of defect size and distribution, compared to conventional acid etching. This process has the potential to be used as a pre-treatment to inhibit corrosion of AA5083 alloy.

Previous studies have shown that cerium diphenyl phosphate (Cedpp) 3 is a very effective inhibitor of corrosion of aluminium alloys in chloride solutions. This paper describes the results of further studies using electrochemical and constant immersion corrosion tests to compare the effectiveness of Ce(dpp) 3 and Mischmetal diphenyl phosphate Mm(dpp) 3 as inhibitors of corrosion pitting on AA7075-T651 aluminium alloy. The results shows that both Ce(dpp) 3 and Mm(dpp) 3 are excellent inhibitors of pitting corrosion of this alloy in very aggressive environments of continuously aerated 0.1M and 1.0M sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions. Polarisation tests indicate that these compounds act as a cathodic inhibitors by reducing the rate of the oxygen reduction reaction, which results in a decreased corrosion current density and a separation of the corrosion potential from the pitting potential. This inhibition is thought to be due to the formation of a surface film consisting of rare earth metal oxide, aluminium oxide and a cerium-aluminium organo-phosphate complex. Surface analysis data from scanning electron microscopy and X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy show the complex nature of this protective film. This work further develops our understanding about the mechanisms through which these complex films form, and how inhibition occurs in the presence of these compounds.

 Dr Huang was one of the first people to explore the possibility of reducing corrosion on aluminium alloys by electrochemical treatments in ionic liquids. Her study showed that the corrosion rates of aluminium alloys were indeed reduced after various electrochemical treatments in the target ionic liquids.

Whilst ionic liquids (IL) have been shown to inhibit corrosion on some reactive metals and alloys by forming a surface film, e.g. Li and Mg, understanding of the interaction between ionic liquids and aluminium is lacking. This research study investigated the viability of film formation on AA5083 Aluminium Alloy by electrochemical treatments in the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium diphenylphosphate ([P6,6,6,14][dpp]) IL. Two-step anodic treatments were performed on AA5083 in the IL, followed by a comparison of the corrosion behaviour of the IL-treated samples with that of a control. It has been revealed that the two-step IL-treatment led to reduced current densities on AA5083 under cyclic voltammetry scan in the IL before and after the IL-treatment. Lower corrosion rates have been shown on all samples treated in IL at room temperature. Surface characterisation showed a non-uniform porous film on the 50°C IL-treated sample with a film thickness ranging between 37nm and 155nm. The IL-film enhanced the corrosion resistance of AA5083 by protecting the Al-matrix and Fe-rich intermetallic particles (IMPs). Although findings of this study suggest similar IL-film formation as that on Li and Mg, more research needs to be conducted to optimise the electrochemical treatment conditions and ultimately to develop a robust IL-film formation procedure for corrosion protection.

Two quinoline derivatives, 8-aminoquinoline (8-AQ) and 8-nitroquinoline (8-NQ), have been used as inhibitors to examine their corrosion protection effect on AA5052 aluminium alloy in 3% NaCl solution. The weight-loss and electrochemical measurement have indicated that 8-AQ and 8-NQ play as anodic inhibitor to retard the anodic electrochemical process. SEM/EDS analysis clearly shows that 8-AQ and 8-NQ form a protective film on the AA5052 alloy surface. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirmed the formation of strong hybridization between the p-orbital of reactive sites in the inhibitor molecules and the sp-orbital of the Al atom. 8-aminoquinoline and 8-nitroquinoline may be useful as effective corrosion inhibitors for aluminium alloys.

The developments in materials over the last decade have been considerable within the automotive industry, being one of the leaders in innovative product applications. Sustainable product development of an automotive structure requires a balanced approach towards technological, economical and ecological aspects. The introduction of new materials and processes is dependent on satisfying different factors. Competitive and legislative pressures, creating the need for change, affect these factors considerably. The process, direction and speed of change are often reactive. Current paper shows the application of aluminium alloys, for the use in the bottom structure of a car to face the problem for the weight of the entire bottom structure under static load conditions, including stiffness, strength and buckling constraints. In addition to minimized mass and materials' price, the assessment of an environmental impact of materials-candidates during the entire life cycle of the structure is considered.

The effects of boron and strontium interactions on the eutectic silicon in hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys have been studied. Samples were prepared from an AI-I 0 mass%Si base alloy with different Al-B additions, alone and in combination with strontium. In alloys containing no strontium, boron additions do not cause modification of the eutectic silicon, while in strontium containing alloys, boron additions reduce the level of modification of the eutectic silicon. Thermal analysis parameters and eutectic silicon microstructures were investigated with respect to the Sr to B ratio. In order to modify the eutectic silicon, a Sr/B ratio exceeding 0.4 is required.

The effects of boron on the eutectic modification and solidification mode of hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys have been studied adding different boride phases. The results show that boron does not cause modification of the eutectic silicon. Boron-containing samples display eutectic nucleation and growth characteristics similar to that of unmodified alloys. In addition to a change in silicon morphology, modification of aluminium-silicon alloys with strontium or sodium increases the size of the eutectic grains. To determine the mechanism responsible, eutectic solidification in commercial purity and ultra-high purity aluminium-si I icon alloys, with and without strontium additions, was examined by a quenching technique. In the commercial unmodified alloy, nucleation was prolific while in the high-purity unmodified alloy few eutectic grains nucleated. The addition of strontium to the commercial alloy reduced the number of eutectic grains that nucleated. Addition of strontium to the high-purity alloy did not significantly alter nucleation. It is concluded that commercial purity alloys contain a large number of potent nuclei that are susceptible to poisoning by impurity modification. The flake-to-fibre transition that occurs with impurity modification is shown to be independent of any change in eutectic nucleation mode and frequency. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. A number of magnesium alloys show promise as engine block materials. However, a critical issue for the automotive industry is corrosion of the engine block by the coolant and this could limit the use of magnesium engine blocks. This work assesses the corrosion performance of conventional magnesium alloy AZ91D and a recently developed engine block magnesium alloy AM-SC1 in several commercial coolants. Immersion testing, hydrogen evolution measurement, galvanic current monitoring and the standard ASTM D1384 test were employed to reveal the corrosion performance of the magnesium alloys subjected to the coolants. The results show that the tested commercial coolants are corrosive to the magnesium alloys in terms of general and galvanic corrosion. The two magnesium alloys exhibited slightly different corrosion resistance to the coolants with AZ91D being more corrosion resistant than AM-SC1. The corrosivity varied from coolant to coolant. Generally speaking. an oraganic-acid based long life coolant was less corrosive to the magnesium alloys than a traditional coolant. Among the studied commercial coolants. Toyota long, life coolant appeared to be the most promising one. In addition. it was found that potassium fluoride effectively inhibited corrosion of the magnesium alloys in the studied commercial coolants. Both general and galvanic corrosion rates were significantly decreased by addition of KF, and there were no evident side effects on the other engine block materials, such as copper, solder. brass. steel and aluminium alloys, in terms of their corrosion performance. The ASTM D 1384 test further confirmed these results and suggested that Toyota long life coolant with 1%wt KF addition is a promising coolant for magnesium engine blocks.

A new modification phenomenon is reported for Al-Si alloys, where the Al-Si eutectic is refined by segregated TiB2 particles. The TiB2 particles are pushed to the Al-Si phase boundary during solidification of the eutectic and it is believed that at high concentrations the TiB2 particles restrict solute redistribution causing refinement of the Si. An initial review of the subject emphasises the need for improved fuel efficiency in vehicles and the possible role of aluminium in reducing weight. The problems of formability generally in manufacture and of aluminium in particular are discussed in the light of published data. A range of thirteen commercially available sheet aluminium alloys have been compared with respect to mechanical properties as these affect forming processes and behaviour in service. Four alloys were selected for detailed comparison. The formability and strength of these were investigated in terms of underlying mechanisms of deformation as well as the microstructural characteristics of the alloys including texture, particle dispersion, grain size and composition. In overall terms, good combinations of strength and ductility are achievable with alloys of the 2xxx and 6xxx series. Some specific alloys are notably better than others. The strength of formed components is affected by paint baking in the final stages of manufacture. Generally, alloys of the 6xxx family are strengthened while 2xxx and 5xxx become weaker. Some anomalous behaviour exists, however. Work hardening of these alloys appears to show rather abrupt decreases over certain strain ranges which is probably responsible for the relatively low strains at which both diffuse and local necking occur. Using data obtained from extended range tensile tests, the strain distribution in more complex shapes can be successfully modelled using finite element methods.Sheet failure during forming occurs by abrupt shear fracture in many instances. This condition is favoured by states of biaxial tension, surface defects in the form of fine scratches and certain types of crystallographic texture. The measured limit strains of the materials can be understood on the basis of attainment of a critical shear stress for fracture.
