Marine algae are one of the major sources of biologic compounds. In extracellular matrix of these organisms there are sulfated polysaccharides that functions as structural components and provides protection against dehydration. The fraction 1.0 (F1.0) rich in sulfated galactans obtained from red seaweed Hypnea musciformis was physicochemical characterized and evaluated for pharmacologic activity through antioxidant activity, cytotoxic action on erythrocytes, anticoagulant, stimulatory action under antithrombotic heparan sulfate synthesis and their effects on cell proliferation and cycle cell progression. The main components of F1.0 were carbohydrates (49.70 ± 0.10%) and sulfate (44.59 ± 0.015%), presenting phenolic compounds (4.79 ± 0.016%) and low protein contamination (0.92 ± 0.001%). Fraction 1.0 showed polidisperse profile and signs in infrared analysis in 1262, 1074 and 930, 900 and 850 attributed to sulfate esters S=O bond, presence of a 3,6- anidrogalactose C-O bond, non-sulfated β-D-galactose and a C-O-SO4 bond in galactose C4, respectively. The fraction rich in sulfated galactans exhibited strong antioxidant action under lipid peroxidation assay with IC50 of 0.003 mg/mL. Besides the inhibition of hemolysis induced by H2O2 in erythrocytes treated with F1.0, this fraction did not promote significant cytotoxity under erythrocytes membranes. F1.0 exhibited low anticoagulant activity causing moderate direct inhibition of enzimatic activity of thrombin. This fraction promoted stimulation around of 4.6 times on this synthesis of heparan sulfate (HS) by rabbit aortic endothelial cells (RAEC) in culture when was compared with non treated cells. The fraction of this algae displayed antiproliferative action under RAEC cells causing incresing on cell number on S fase, blocking the cycle cell progression. Thus F1.0 presented cytostatic and no cytotoxic action under this cell lineage. These results suggest that F1.0 from H. musciformis have antioxidant potential which is a great effect for a compound used as food and in food industry which could be an alternative to food industry to prevent quality decay of lipid containing food due to lipid peroxidation. These polysaccharides prevent the lipid peroxidation once the fraction in study exhibited strong inhibitory action of this process. Furthermore that F1.0 present strong antithrombotic action promoting the stimulation of antithrombotic HS synthesis by endothelial cells, being important for thrombosis preventing, by its inhibitory action under reactive oxygen species (ROS) in some in vitro methods, being involved in promotion of hypercoagulability state.

Central cholinergic activation by pilocarpine induces salivation dependent on the integrity of forebrain areas. The present work investigates the autonomic mediation of this salivation. Pilocarpine (500 nmol/rat) was injected into the lateral ventricle (LV) of tribromoethanol-anesthetized adult male rats. Preweighed cotton balls were inserted into the oral cavity and weighed again 7 min later. ol-adrenoceptor antagonists (3-50 mu mol/kg) prazosin (alpha(1)), yohimbine (alpha(2)) or propranolol (beta) injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) produced, 80%, 20% and 0% inhibition respectively of the LV pilocarpine-induced salivation. Intracerebroventricular injections (160 nmol) of the antagonists did not alter the effects of pilocarpine injected into the LV. Bilateral section of chorda tympani nerve or bilateral sympathetic cervical ganglionectomy produced 0% and 40% inhibition of pilocarpine-induced salivation, respectively. Ganglionectomy did not alter salivation induced by i.p, injection of pilocarpine (4 mu mol/kg). The results indicate that there is a large sympathetic contribution to the salivation induced by central cholinergic activation. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Ceftazidime shows two main polarographic reduction peaks at pH 4.0, that at -0.45 V owing to reduction of the C=N bond in the methylethoxyimino group and that at -1.00 V owing to the reductive elimination of pyridine: the first peak is particularly suitable for the determination of ceftazidime. Ceftazidime can also be determined indirectly using the tensammetric peak at -0.60 V (in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 9.5) of pyridine liberated on hydrolysis. Ceftazidime can be determined in urine using the direct method only after Cls solid phase extraction, but it can be determined directly in the urine by hydrolysing it and using the pyridine peak. The reduction of phenyl benzoates with nitro substituents at the 2-,3- and 4-positions of the benzoates in N,N-dimethylformamide is reported. The phenyl 4- and 3-nitrobenzoate are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first one, at about -0.9 V vs. SCE, a reversible one-electron process, gives a rather stable anion radical. The second reduction step at potentials between -1.5 and -2.0 V vs. SCE leads to formation of the dianion, which decomposes giving free phenol in good yields (> 80%). on the other hand, the phenyl 2-nitrobenzoate is reduced in one cathodic step. This step occurs at -0.9 V with formation of an unstable anion radical which decomposes via C-O bond cleavage, giving phenol with a yield of ca. 80%. Thin polymer films were grown in radio frequency discharges containing C2H2. Actinometry revealed the trend in the plasma concentration of the CH species as a function of the operating pressure. The C-H bond density in the films, revealed by infrared analysis, was found to increase with the pressure of C2H2 in a similar way to that of the concentration of the CH species in the discharge. From transmission ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy data, optical parameters of the polymers, namely, the refractive index and the optical gap, were calculated. For the range of pressure studied, the refractive index decreased from 1.73 to 1.63 and the optical gap increased from 2.4 to 3.3 eV. Finally, measurements of the residual stress of the polymer films were carried out by the bending beam method, using a He-Ne laser, yielding values from 0.05 to 0.3 GPa. The detection limit (about 0.017 mu g mL(-1)) for voltammetric determination of iodide (peak at +0.87 V vs. Ag/AgCl at pH 2) at a glutaraldehyde-cross-linked poly-L-lysine modified glassy carbon electrode involving oxidation to iodine was found to be several orders of magnitude lower than that for the voltammetric determination on a bare glassy carbon electrode. This method was applied successfully to the determination of iodide in two medicinal formulations. Idoxuridine was determined indirectly at the same electrode by accumulating it first at -0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl. At this potential the C-I bond in the adsorbed idoxuridine is reduced giving iodide, which is then determined at the modified electrode. The method was successfully applied to the determination of idoxuridine in a urine sample.

The applicability of the nitrobenzoyl group [NO2C6H4CO-] to protecting the functional hydroxyl group was investigated through study of the electrochemical behaviour of the butyl 4-, 3- and 2-nitrobenzoate compounds. These isomers are reduced in two cathodic steps. The first, at potentials of ca. -0.9 V vs. SCE, is attributed to the formation of rather stable anion radicals, involving one-electron transfer. The second, at potentials of ca. -1.7 V vs. SCE, occurs with a two-electron transfer in an ECE process, in which the dianion produced undergoes scission of the C-O bond giving n-butanoate ions with high yields (similar to 80%)
