The microstructure, microhardness, texture and corrosion resistance of cold-swaged and cold-wiredrawn copper rods were evaluated. Elongated grains along the deformation direction were observed for both materials and the width of these grains decreased with the increase of reduction in area. Wiredrawn copper rods have higher microhardness than the swaged rods for the same reduction in area. The copper grains in both cold-worked rods presented a preferential orientation in the [1 1 0] crystallographic direction but this trend was more pronounced for swaged rods. The corrosion resistance of wiredrawn copper rods investigated in H(2)SO(4) solutions was lower than that of swaged rods, and for both deformed materials the corrosion resistance decreased with the deformation degree. A new tri-electrode probe is presented and applied to local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) measurements. As opposed to two-probe systems, the three-probe one allows measurement not only of normal, but also of radial contributions of local current densities to the local impedance values. The results concerning the cases of the blocking electrode and the electrode with faradaic reaction are discussed from the theoretical point of view for a disk electrode. Numerical simulations and experimental results are compared for the case of the ferri/ferrocyanide electrode reaction at the Pt working electrode disk. At the centre of the disk, the impedance taking into account both normal and radial contributions was in good agreement with the local impedance measured in terms of only the normal contribution. At the periphery of the electrode, the impedance taking into account both normal and radial contributions differed significantly from the local impedance measured in terms of only the normal contribution. The radial impedance results at the periphery of the electrode are in good agreement with the usual explanation that the associated larger current density is attributed to the geometry of the electrode, which exhibits a greater accessibility at the electrode edge. Revitalizing manufacturing in the US is a hot topic, and the $1B National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) has three new centers focused on metal casting. For structural applications, magnesium casting, structural die-cast alloys, austempered ductile and compacted graphite cast iron, and high strength steel promise dramatic weight reduction and improved performance. Recent experiments and modeling at UAB focus on the development of such new materials and processing routes. A study of the rare earth content in an aerospace magnesium alloy is presented.

The tensile deformation behavior of a range of supersaturated Mg-Al solid solutions and an as-cast magnesium alloy AM60 has been studied. The Mg-Al alloys were tested at room temperature while the alloy AM60 was tested in the temperature range 293-573 K. The differences in the deformation behavior of the alloys is discussed in terms of hardening and softening processes. In order to identify which processes were active, the stress dependence of the strain-hardening coefficient was assessed using Lukac and Balik's model of hardening and softening. The analysis indicates that hardening involves solid solution hardening and interaction with forest dislocations and non-dislocation obstacles such as second phase particles. Cross slip is not a significant recovery process in the temperature range 293-423 K. At temperatures between 473 and 523 K the analysis suggests that softening is controlled by cross slip and climb of dislocations. At temperatures above 523 K softening seems to be controlled by dynamic recrystallisation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Detailed microscopic examination using optical and electron microscopes suggests that Al4C3, often observed in the central regions of magnesium grains on polished sections, is a potent substrate for primary Mg. Calculations of the crystallographic relationships between magnesium and Al4C3 further support the experimental observations. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. This research investigated the galvanic corrosion of the magnesium alloy AZ91D coupled to steel. The galvanic current distribution was measured in 5% NaCl solution, corrosive water and an auto coolant. The experimental measurements were compared with predictions from a Boundary Element Method (BEM) model. The boundary condition, required as an input into the BEM model, needs to be a polarization curve that accurately reflects the corrosion process. Provided that the polarization curve does reflect steady state, the BEM model is expected to be able to reflect steady state galvanic corrosion.

This work studied the effect of the impurity iron and the alloying elements aluminium and zinc in single-phase substrate magnesium alloys on the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. It was found that increasing zinc content (0-2%) led to increased corrosion resistance of an anodised single-phase Mg-Zn alloy. The addition of Al lowered the corrosion resistance of an anodised commercial purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy, whereas the same addition was found to be beneficial to the corrosion resistance of an anodised high purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy. Heat-treatment made the substrate Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys more uniform and hence improved the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. The detrimental effect of iron impurity on corrosion performance of the unanodised substrate single-phase magnesium alloys was inherited by the anodised alloys. The corrosion resistance of the anodised Mg alloys was found to be closely correlated with the corrosion performance of the unanodised as-cast Mg alloys. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Grain size is one of the most important microstructural characteristics determining the mechanical properties and therefore the service performance of polycrystalline materials. Heterogeneous nucleation involves the addition or in situ formation of potent nuclei in the system to promote nucleation events, leading to a fine grain structure. This paper reports experimental results using graphite and SiC as potential grain refining agents to form in situ nuclei for Mg in Mg-Al alloys, and demonstrates the key role of Al4C3 in grain refilling this important alloy system. This insight will contribute to the design and development of the most cost effective, eco-friendly grain refining agents for Mg-Al alloys. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The grain size dependencies of the yield and fracture stresses in hot rolled Mg-12.7 at % Cd alloy have been measured in the temperature range 77 to 420 K and are found to be in accordance with HalI-Petch type of equations. In hot rolled Mg-12.7 Cd alloy, the HalI-Petch intercept a w is higher than that in hot rolled magnesium, while the slope ky is comparable. The fracture is intercrystalline at 77 K, mixed mode at 300 K and ductile at 420 K. The above flow and fracture behaviours are interpreted in terms of the complimentary effects of texture hardening and solid solution strengthening.

Tensile experiments on a fine-grained single-phase Mg–Zn–Al alloy (AZ31) at 673 K revealed superplastic behavior with an elongation to failure of 475% at 1 × 10−4 s−1 and non-superplastic behavior with an elongation to failure of 160% at 1 × 10−2 s−1; the corresponding strain rate sensitivities under these conditions were 0.5 and 0.2, respectively. Measurements indicated that the grain boundary sliding (GBS) contribution to strain ξ was 30% under non-superplastic conditions; there was also a significant sharpening in texture during such deformation. Under superplastic conditions, ξ was 50% at both low and high elongations of 20% and 120%; the initial texture became more random under such conditions. In non-superplastic conditions, deformation occurred under steady-state conditions without grain growth before significant flow localization whereas, under superplastic conditions, there was grain growth during the early stages of deformation, leading to strain hardening. The grains retained equiaxed shapes under all experimental conditions. Superplastic deformation is attributed to GBS, while non-superplastic deformation is attributed to intragranular dislocation creep with some contribution from GBS. The retention of equiaxed grain shapes during dislocation creep is consistent with a model based on local recovery related to the disturbance of triple junctions.

The electrolytic deposition and diffusion of lithium onto bulk magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium alloy cathode in molten salt of 47 wt pct lithium chloride and 53 wt pct potassium chloride at 693 K were investigated. Results show that magnesium-yttrium-lithium ternary alloys are formed on the surface of the cathodes, and a penetration depth of 642 mu m is acquired after 2 hours of electrolysis at the cathodic current density of 0.06 A center dot cm(-2). The diffusion of lithium results in a great amount of precipitates in the lithium containing layer. These precipitates are the compound of Mg41Y5, which arrange along the grain boundaries and hinder the diffusion of lithium, and solid solution of yttrium in magnesium. The grain boundaries and the twins of the magnesium-9 wt pct yttrium substrate also have negative effects on the diffusion of lithium.

The Mg-based metal matrix composite reinforced by 10 wt.% W14Al86 alloy particles has been prepared by mechanical alloying and press-forming process. X-ray diffraction studies confirm the formation of the composite. Microstructure characterization of the samples reveals the uniform distribution of fine W14Al86 alloy. Mechanical properties characterization revealed that the reinforcement of W14Al86 alloy lead to a significant increase in hardness and tensile strength of Mg and AZ91.
