Introduction: The proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation technique (PNF) has been proven to be efficient, since it was found higher gain of joint range-of-motion compared to the classic stretching. This study aimed to perform a comparison between the muscular stretching techniques and the PNF hold-relax on the internal and external sagittal/diagonal plane.Method: Randomly divided in 3 groups by a drawing, 30 healthy male individuals have undergone the test. In group I the hold-relax technique was utilized on the sagittal plane, grupo II receveid hold-relax on the internal and external diagonals, and group III, on which an evaluation was performed, worked as control. All the groups went through tests on the first, fifth and fifteenth day after the application of the different approaches. In this evaluation it was used a Flexis (R) Fleximeter.Result: Group II (diagonal) obtained statistically significant gain of 13.99% in the immediate post-test and post test later obtained a loss of 4.81%, group I (sagittal) showed no statistical difference as the group III (control).Conclusion: We conclude that the technique of PNF in the diagonal plane is effective in the flexibility of the hamstring muscles.

Avaliou-se o efeito da linhagem, do sistema de criação e do sexo sobre o peso vivo, o rendimento de carcaça e de pernas e os aspectos morfológicos das fibras musculares esqueléticas do músculo flexor longo do hálux de frangos de corte. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 2 x 2, ou seja, quatro linhagens (Ross-308, Pescoço Pelado Label Rouge, Caipirinha e Paraíso Pedrês), dois sistemas de criação (confinamento e semiconfinamento) e dois sexos, com duas repetições por tratamento, sendo que cada ave retirada ao acaso aos 56 dias de idade foi considerada uma unidade experimental, totalizando 64 aves. A linhagem Ross apresentou maior peso vivo e maiores pesos de carcaça, de pernas, de carne de penas e do músculo flexor longo do hálux e maiores rendimentos de carcaça e de carnes de pernas que as outras linhagens. A maior massa muscular das aves selecionadas para alta taxa de crescimento está relacionada ao aumento na área dos três tipos de fibras musculares (SO, FOG e FG). Machos apresentaram maior massa muscular e musculatura mais glicolítica que fêmeas. O sistema de semiconfinamento alterou a composição de fibras musculares esqueléticas dos machos, tornando-a mais oxidativa, porém, esse efeito não foi observado nas fêmeas.

The oxidative and thermo-mechanical degradation of HDPE was studied during processing in an internal mixer under two conditions: totally and partially filled chambers, which provides lower and higher concentrations of oxygen, respectively. Two types of HDPEs, Phillips and Ziegler-Natta, having different levels of terminal vinyl unsaturations were analyzed. Materials were processed at 160, 200, and 240 degrees C. Standard rheograrns using a partially filled chamber showed that the torque is much more unstable in comparison to a totally filled chamber which provides an environment depleted of oxygen. Carbonyl and transvinylene group concentrations increased, whereas vinyl group concentration decreased with temperature and oxygen availability. Average number of chain scission and branching (n(s)) was calculated from MWD curves and its plotting versus functional groups' concentration showed that chain scission or branching takes place depending upon oxygen content and vinyl groups' consumption. Chain scission and branching distribution function (CSBDF) values showed that longer chains undergo chain scission easier than shorter ones due to their higher probability of entanglements. This yields macroradicals that react with the vinyl terminal unsaturations of other chains producing chain branching. Shorter chains are more mobile, not suffering scission but instead are used for grafting the macroradicals, increasing the molecular weight. Increase in the oxygen concentration, temperature, and vinyl end groups' content facilitates the thermo-mechanical degradation reducing the amount of both, longer chains via chain scission and shorter chains via chain branching, narrowing the polydispersity. In the paper we discuss the potential of the new Galileo signals for pseudorange based surveying and mapping in open areas under optimal reception conditions (open sky scenarios) and suboptimal ones (multipath created by moderate to thick tree coverage). The paper reviews the main features of the Galileo E5 AltBOC and E1 CBOC signals; describes the simulation strategy, models and algorithms to generate realistic E5 and E1 pseudoranges with and without multipath sources; describes the ionosphere modeling strategy, models and algorithms and discusses and presents the expected positioning accuracy and precision results. According to the simulations performed, pseudoranges can be extracted from the Galileo E5 AltBOC signals with tracking errors (1-σ level) ranging from 0.02 m (open sky scenarios) to 0.08 m (tree covered scenarios) whereas for the Galileo E1 CBOC signals the tracking errors range between 0.25 m to 2.00 m respectively. With these tracking errors and with the explicit estimation of the ionosphere parameters, simulations indicate real-time open sky cm-level horizontal positioning precisions and dm-level vertical ones and dm-level accuracies for both the horizontal and vertical position components.

O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a taxa de desenvolvimento de força (TDF) nas contrações isométrica e isocinéticas concêntrica a 60°.s-1 e 180°.s-1. Quatorze indivíduos do gênero masculino (idade = 23,1±2,8 anos; estatura = 174±31,3 cm e; massa corporal = 81±12 kg) participaram deste estudo. Na primeira visita foi realizada uma familiarização ao equipamento isocinético. Posteriormente, os indivíduos realizaram em ordem randômica 5 contrações isocinéticas máximas para os extensores do joelho em 60°.s-1 e 180°.s-1 para determinar o torque máximo concêntrico (TMC) e 2 contrações isométricas máximas de 3 s para determinar o torque máximo isométrico (TMI). O TMI (301,4±56,0 N.m) foi maior do que o TMC a 60°.s-1 (239,8±42,2 N.m) e 180°.s-1 (175,0±32,5 N.m). O TMC a 60°.s-1 foi maior do que o TMC a 180°.s-1. Para os intervalos de 0-30ms e 0-50ms, a TDF na condição isométrica (1196,6±464,6 e 1326,5±514,2 N.m.s-1, respectivamente) foi similar à TDF a 60°.s- 1 (1035,4±446,2 e 1134,3±448,4 N.m.s-1) e maior do que a 180°.s-1 (656,7±246,6 e 475,2±197,9 N.m.s-1), sendo ainda que a TDF na contração concêntrica rápida foi menor do que na lenta. No intervalo 0-100ms, a TDF da contração isométrica (1248,8±417,4 N.m.s-1) foi significantemente maior que a obtida na contração isocinética rápida (909,2±283,4 N.m.s- 1). A TDF obtida na contração isocinética lenta (1005,4±247,7 N.m.s-1) foi similar à obtida na contração isométrica e na concêntrica isocinética rápida. No intervalo 0-150ms, a TDF isométrica (1084,2±332,1 N.m.s-1) foi maior do que as concêntricas (60°.s-1 e 180°.s-1) (834,8±184,2 e 767,6±201,8 N.m.s-1, respectivamente), não existindo diferenças entre estas duas últimas. Prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy (PIRRT) has emerged as an alternative to continuous renal replacement therapy in the management of acute kidney injury (AKI) patients. This trial aimed to compare the dialysis complications occurring during different durations of PIRRT sessions in critically ill AKI patients. We included patients older than 18 years with AKI associated with sepsis admitted to the intensive care unit and using noradrenaline doses ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 mu g/kg/min. Patients were divided into two groups randomly: in G1, 6-h sessions were performed, and in G2, 10-h sessions were performed. Seventy-five patients were treated with 195 PIRRT sessions for 18 consecutive months. The prevalence of hypotension, filter clotting, hypokalemia, and hypophosphatemia was 82.6, 25.3, 20, and 10.6%, respectively. G1 was composed of 38 patients treated with 100 sessions, whereas G2 consisted of 37 patients treated with 95 sessions. G1 and G2 were similar in male predominance (65.7 vs. 75.6%, P=0.34), age (63.6 +/- 14 vs. 59.9 +/- 15.5 years, P=0.28) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (SOFA; 13.1 +/- 2.4 vs. 14.2 +/- 3.0, P=0.2). There was no significant difference between the two groups in hypotension (81.5 vs. 83.7%, P=0.8), filter clotting (23.6 vs. 27%, P=0.73), hypokalemia (13.1 vs. 8.1%, P=0.71), and hypophosphatemia (18.4 vs. 21.6%, P=0.72). However, the group treated with sessions of 10h were refractory to clinical measures for hypotension, and dialysis sessions were interrupted more often (9.5 vs. 30.1%, P=0.03). Metabolic control and fluid balance were similar between G1 and G2 (blood urea nitrogen [BUN]: 81 +/- 30 vs. 73 +/- 33mg/dL, P=1.0; delivered Kt/V: 1.09 +/- 0.24 vs. 1.26 +/- 0.26, P=0.09; actual ultrafiltration: 1731 +/- 818 vs. 2332 +/- 947mL, P=0.13) and fluid balance (-731 +/- 125 vs. -652 +/- 141mL, respectively) . In conclusion, intradialysis hypotension was common in AKI patients treated with PIRRT. There was no difference in the prevalence of dialysis complications in patients undergoing different durations of PIRRT.

Background. There is a growing need to improve heart preservation benefit the performance of cardiac operations, decrease morbidity, and more important, increase the donor pool. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of Krebs-Henseleit buffer (KHB), Bretschneider-HTK (HTK), St. Thomas No. 1 (STH-1), and Celsior (CEL) solutions infused at 10 degrees C and 20 degrees C. Methods. Hearts isolated from male albino Wistar rats and prepared according to Langendorff were randomly divided equally into 8 groups according to the temperature of infusion (10 degrees C or 20 degrees C) and cardioprotective solutions (KHB, HTK, STH-1, and CEL). After stabilization with KHB at 37 degrees C, baseline values were collected (control) for heart rate (HR), left ventricle systolic pressure (LVSP), coronary flow (CF), maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure during ventricular contraction (+dP/dt) and maximum rate of fall of left ventricular pressure during left ventricular relaxation (-dP/dt). The hearts were then perfused with cardioprotective solutions for 5 minutes and kept for 2 hours in static ischemia at 20 degrees C. Data evaluation used analysis of variance (ANOVA) in all together randomized 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons. The level of significance chosen was P < .05. Results. We observed that all 4 solutions were able to recover HR, independent of temperature. Interestingly, STH-1 solution at 20 degrees C showed HR above baseline throughout the experiment. An evaluation of the corresponding hemodynamic values (LVSP, +dP/dt, and -dP/dt) indicated that treatment with CEL solution was superior at both temperatures compared with the other solutions, and had better performance at 20 degrees C. When analyzing performance on CF maintenance, we observed that it was temperature dependent. However, when applying both HTK and CEL, at 10 degrees C and 20 degrees C respectively, indicated better protection against development of tissue edema. Multiple comparisons between treatments and hemodynamic variable outcomes showed that using CEL solution resulted in significant improvement compared with the other solutions at both temperatures. Conclusion. The solutions investigated were not able to fully suppress the deleterious effects of ischemia and reperfusion of the heart. However, these results allow us to conclude that temperature and the cardioprotective solution are interdependent as far as myocardial protection. Although CEL solution is the best for in myocardial protection, more studies are needed to understand the interaction between temperature and perfusion solution used. This will lead to development of better and more efficient cardioprotective methods.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a common myeloproliferative disease that is characterized by the clonal expansion of marrow stem cells, and is associated with the Philadelphia chromosome. As the disease progresses, additional chromosome abnormalities may arise. The prognostic impact of secondary chromosomal abnormalities in CML is complex, heterogeneous, and sometimes related to previous treatment. Here, we describe a CML patient in lymphoid blast crisis associated with a new chromosomal abnormality identified, dic(7;12)(p12.21;p12.2) and i(12)(q10) using classical cytogenetics and spectral karyotype analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of t(7;12)(p11.1;q11.1) and i(12)(q10) in a CML patient with lymphoid evolution.

We report integral cross sections for elastic electron scattering by the lignin subunits phenol, guaiacol, and p-coumaryl alcohol. Our calculations employed the Schwinger multichannel method with pseudopotentials and indicate three to four pi* shape resonances for each of these systems, suggesting that low-energy electrons could efficiently transfer energy into the lignin matrix. We also discuss dissociation mechanisms based on the calculated cross sections, available experimental data, virtual orbital analysis, and the knowledge on electron interactions with biomolecules. Our results point out a physical-chemical basis for electron-driven biomass delignification. The latter would be an essential step for efficient biofuel production from lignocellulosic materials.

Background. Brazil conducted mass immunization of women of childbearing age in 2001 and 2002. Surveillance was initiated for vaccination of women during pregnancy to monitor the effects of rubella vaccination on fetal outcomes. Methods. Women vaccinated while pregnant or prior to conception were reported to the surveillance system. Susceptibility to rubella infection was determined by anti-rubella immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG immunoassays. Susceptible women were observed through delivery. Live-born infants were tested for anti-rubella IgM antibody; IgM-seropositive newborns were tested for viral shedding and observed for 12 months for signs of congenital rubella syndrome. Incidence of congenital rubella infection was calculated using data from 7 states. Results. A total of 22 708 cases of rubella vaccination during pregnancy or prior to conception were reported nationwide, 20 536 (90%) of which were from 7 of 27 states in Brazil. Of these, 2332 women were susceptible to rubella infection at vaccination. Sixty-seven (4.1%) of 1647 newborns had rubella IgM antibody (incidence rate, 4.1 congenital infections per 100 susceptible women vaccinated during pregnancy [95% confidence interval, 3.2–5.1]). None of the infants infected with rubella vaccine virus was born with congenital rubella syndrome. Conclusions. As rubella elimination goals are adopted worldwide, evidence of rubella vaccine safety aids in planning and implementation of mass adult immunization.

La tesi può intendersi schematicamente suddivisibile in quattro macrosettori: il primo concerne un excursus storico-giuridico sulla nascita ed evoluzione dei Monti di Pietà, nonché delle Casse di Risparmio; il secondo macrosettore si riferisce peculiarmente alla profonda trasformazione e riorganizzazione delle Banche Pubbliche in Società per Azioni e alla conseguente nascita delle Fondazioni Bancarie, con l'approfondimento delle problematiche attinenti alla loro natura giuridica, e con il richiamo alle sentenze nn. 300 e 301/2003 della Corte Costituzionale; il terzo prende in esame il ruolo delle Fondazioni nella prospettiva della operatività del principio di sussidiarietà orizzontale; infine, nell'ambito del quarto macrosettore ci si è soffermati sulla struttura organizzativa delle Fondazioni, sul loro regime fiscale e sul tema dell'attività d'impresa delle stesse.
