Eclogites and their retrogressed equivalents from the eastern unit of the Glenelg-Attadale Inlier in NW Scotland preserve much microstructural evidence that indicates that very high-pressure/temperature eclogite facies conditions were reached, and followed by decompression and hydration during exhumation. Rutile exsolution in garnet and quartz exsolution in omphacite and titanite formed through mineral reactions during high P-T peak metamorphism. Isochemical phase diagrams modeled for samples from three different locations indicate that the outer part of the eastern unit preserves a peak metamorphic condition of c. 850-1000 degrees C at 18-25 kbar, whereas the central part has a similar pressure (c. 23 kbar), but a lower temperature (c. 670 degrees C). Due to the limitations in the phase diagram calculations the estimated P-T conditions represent the minimum conditions attained by the peak metamorphic assemblage, and the pre-exsoived peak assemblage probably stabilized at a higher pressure. This observation is strongly supported by the presence of exsolution microstructures. The present results demonstrate that the eastern unit experienced very high P-T conditions during peak metamorphism and a tight clockwise P-T trajectory and provide the first indication of possible ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism in the Glenelg eclogites. While there is evidence that science and non-science background students display small differences in performance in basic and clinical sciences, early in a 4-year, graduate entry medical program, this lessens with time. With respect to anatomy knowledge, there are no comparable data as to the impact previous anatomy experience has on the student perception of the anatomy practical learning environment. A study survey was designed to evaluate student perception of the anatomy practical program and its impact on student learning, for the initial cohort of a new medical school. The survey comprised 19 statements requiring a response using a 5-point Likert scale, in addition to a free text opportunity to provide opinion of the perceived educational value of the anatomy practical program. The response rate for a total cohort of 82 students was 89%. The anatomy practical program was highly valued by the students in aiding their learning of anatomy, as indicated by the high mean scores for all statements (range: 4.04-4.7). There was a significant difference between the students who had and had not studied a science course prior to entering medicine, with respect to statements that addressed aspects of the course related to its structure, organization, variety of resources, linkage to problem-based learning cases, and fairness of assessment. Nonscience students were more positive compared to those who had studied science before (P levels ranging from 0.004 to 0.035). Students less experienced in anatomy were more challenged in prioritizing core curricular knowledge. © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

In a reverse Stroop task, observers respond to the meaning of a color word irrespective of the color in which the word is printed—for example, the word red may be printed in the congruent color (red), an incongruent color (e.g., blue), or a neutral color (e.g., white). Although reading of color words in this task is often thought to be neither facilitated by congruent print colors nor interfered with incongruent print colors, this interference has been detected by using a response method that does not give any bias in favor of processing of word meanings or processing of print colors. On the other hand, evidence for the presence of facilitation in this task has been scarce, even though this facilitation is theoretically possible. By modifying the task such that participants respond to a stimulus color word by pointing to a corresponding response word on a computer screen with a mouse, the present study investigated the possibility that not only interference but also facilitation would take place in a reverse Stroop task. Importantly, in this study, participants’ responses were dynamically tracked by recording the entire trajectories of the mouse. Arguably, this method provided richer information about participants’ performance than traditional measures such as reaction time and accuracy, allowing for more detailed (and thus potentially more sensitive) investigation of facilitation and interference in the reverse Stroop task. These trajectories showed that the mouse’s approach toward correct response words was significantly delayed by incongruent print colors but not affected by congruent print colors, demonstrating that only interference, not facilitation, was present in the current task. Implications of these findings are discussed within a theoretical framework in which the strength of association between a task and its response method plays a critical role in determining how word meanings and print colors interact in reverse Stroop tasks.

Cat’s claw creeper, Dolichandra unguis-cati (L.) Lohmann (syn. Macfadyena unguis-cati (L.) Gentry) is a major environmental weed in Australia. Two forms (‘long’ and ‘short’ pod) of the weed occur in Australia. This investigation aimed to evaluate and compare germination behavior and occurrence of polyembryony in the two forms of the weed. Seeds were germinated in growth chambers set to 10/20 °C, 15/25 °C, 20/30 °C, 30/45 °C and 25 °C. Germination and polyembryony were monitored over a period of 12 weeks. For all the treatments in this study, seeds from the short pod form exhibited significantly higher germination rates and higher occurrence of polyembryony than those from the long pod form. Seeds from the long pod form did not germinate at the lowest temperature of 10/20 °C; in contrast, those of the short pod form germinated under this condition, albeit at a lower rate. Results from this study could explain why the short pod form of D. unguis-cati is the more widely distributed form in Australia, while the long pod form is confined to a few localities. The results have implication in predicting future ranges of both forms of the invasive D. unguis-cati, as well as inform management decisions for control of the weed.

The purification and some properties of the enzyme indoleacetaldoxime hydrolyase (EC 4.2.1.29) from the fungus Gibberella fujikuroi, which dehydrates indoleacetaldoxime (IAOX) to indoleacetonitrile (IAN), are described. The enzyme activity in the fungus is present only under certain culture conditions. It is a soluble enzyme, has an optimum pH at 7, shows an energy of activation of —15,670 cal/mole, and has a Michaelis constant of 1.7 × 10−4 Image at 30 °. It appears to be specific for IAOX, and 1 mole of IAN is produced per mole of IAOX utilized. The enzyme is inhibited by a number of aldoximes of which phenylacetaldoxime (PAOX) is the most potent inhibitor. Inhibition by PAOX is competitive (Ki = 2.2 × 10−8 Image ). The enzyme is inhibited by SH reagents such as p-hydroxymercuribenzoate and N-ethylmaleimide, and by a number of SH compounds such as cysteine, β-mercaptoethanol, and 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (BAL). However, glutathione activates the enzyme. Metal chelating agents such as 8-OH-quinoline and diethyl dithiocarbamate inhibit the enzyme; the inhibition is partly reversed by ferric citrate. Ascorbic acid, and particularly dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), are good activators of the enzyme. Several other biological oxidants had either no action or had a slight effect. Potassium cyanide activates the enzyme at low concentration but inhibits at higher concentrations. Reduction of the enzyme with NaBH4 reduces activity, and the effect is partly reversed by pyridoxal phosphate and also by DHA. The above properties indicate that both an SH function and an oxidized function are required for activity.

A method for the delipidation of egg yolk plasma using phospholipase-C, n-heptane, and 1-butanol has been described. An aggregating protein fraction and a soluble protein fraction were separated by the action of phospholipase-C. The aggregating protein fraction freed of most of the lipids by treatment with n-heptane and 1-butanol was shown to be the apolipoproteins of yolk plasma, whereas the soluble proteins were identified as the livetins. Carbohydrate and the N-terminal amino acid analysis of these protein fractions are reported. A comparison of these protein fractions with the corresponding fractions obtained by formic acid delipidation of yolk plasma has been made. The gelation of yolk plasma by the action of phospholipase-C has been interpreted as an aggregation of lipoproteins caused by ionic interactions. The role of lecithin in maintaining the structural integrity of lipoproteins has been discussed.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the pricing accuracy under stochastic volatility where the volatility follows a square root process. The theoretical prices are compared with market price data (the German DAX index options market) by using two different techniques of parameter estimation, the method of moments and implicit estimation by inversion. Standard Black & Scholes pricing is used as a benchmark. The results indicate that the stochastic volatility model with parameters estimated by inversion using the available prices on the preceding day, is the most accurate pricing method of the three in this study and can be considered satisfactory. However, as the same model with parameters estimated using a rolling window (the method of moments) proved to be inferior to the benchmark, the importance of stable and correct estimation of the parameters is evident.

In this letter we characterize strain in Si1-xGex based heterojunction bipolar transistors and modulation doped field effect transistors grown by rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition exploiting the phenomenon of strain-induced birefringence. The technique used is multiple angle of incidence ellipsometry at a wavelength of 670 nm to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of the Si1-xGex films. We report measurements on thin fully strained films (with thicknesses less than the critical thickness) with Ge concentration varying from 9% to 40% with an accuracy of the order of 1 part in 10(4) and propose an empirical relation between the difference in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices (deltan) and the Ge concentration (x) given by deltan(x)=0.18x-0.12x(2). In Salmonella typhimurium, propionate is oxidized to pyruvate via the 2-methylcitric acid cycle. The last step of this cycle, the cleavage of 2-methylisocitrate to succinate and pyruvate, is catalysed by 2-methylisocitrate lyase (EC 4.1.3.30). Methylisocitrate lyase (molecular weight 32 kDa) with a C-terminal polyhistidine affinity tag has been cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli and purified and crystallized under different conditions using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion technique. Crystals belong to the orthogonal space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 63.600, b = 100.670, c = 204.745 Angstrom. A complete data set to 2.5 Angstrom resolution has been collected using an image-plate detector system mounted on a rotating-anode X-ray generator.

The equilibrium pressure of calcium corresponding to the reduction reaction 6CaO (s) + 2Al (l) half-arrow-right-over-half-arrow-left 3CaO.Al2O3 (s) + 3Ca (g) has been measured by Knudsen effusion - mass loss analysis in the temperature range 1190 - 1500 K. The measured vapour pressure can be expressed as a function of temperature by the relation: log p(Ca) (Pa) = -10,670/T + 9.267 The calcium generated is partially absorbed by aluminium to form an alloy. The equilibrium composition of the alloy at 1373 K was found to be 22 mol% Ca - 78 mol% Al. The measured vapour pressure is in good agreement with that computed from thermodynamic data.

Nanosecond scale molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on antiparallel Greek key type d(G(7)) quadruplex structures with different coordinated ions, namely Na+ and K+ ion, water and Na+ counter ions, using the AMBER force field and Particle Mesh Ewald technique for electrostatic interactions. Antiparallel structures are stable during the simulation, with root mean square deviation values of similar to1.5 Angstrom from the initial structures. Hydrogen bonding patterns within the G-tetrads depend on the nature of the coordinated ion, with the G-tetrad undergoing local structural variation to accommodate different cations. However, alternating syn-anti arrangement of bases along a chain as well as in a quartet is maintained through out the MD simulation. Coordinated Na+ ions, within the quadruplex cavity are quite mobile within the central channel and can even enter or exit from the quadruplex core, whereas coordinated K+ ions are quite immobile. MD studies at 400 K indicate that K+ ion cannot come out from the quadruplex core without breaking the terminal G-tetrads. Smaller grooves in antiparallel structures are better binding sites for hydrated counter ions, while a string of hydrogen bonded water molecules are observed within both the small and large grooves. The hydration free energy for the K+ ion coordinated structure is more favourable than that for the Na+ ion coordinated antiparallel quadruplex structure.
