Crystalline aggregates composed of calcium carbonate were recovered in the uppermost 50 m of Nankai Trough sediments during DSDP Leg 87A. These aggregates decomposed with time to masses of sandy calcite as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Petrographic and scanning electron microscopy revealed textures suggestive of a precursor phrase prior to calcite, and this precursor has been tentatively identified as the mineral ikaite, CaCO3*6H2O. Stable isotope data suggest a large component of terrigenous organic matter as the carbon source, consistent with the appearance of these aggregates in highly reducing pyritic sediments containing abundant plant remains. We propose that these nodules formed in euxinic basins on the upper part of the Trough slope under normal seafloor conditions of pressure and temperature. Calculated temperatures of formation of this phase are not unusually low. The specimens from Site 583 are the first reported occurrences of ikaite in active margin sediments.

Abundant iron-titanium (Fe-Ti) oxide gabbro, olivine gabbro, and troctolite were drilled at Hole 735B adjacent to the Atlantis II Fracture Zone of the Southwest Indian Ridge during Leg 118. The Fe-Ti oxide gabbro occurs as intrusive bodies into olivine gabbro with very sharp intrusive contacts. The size of the intrusive bodies varies from a millimeter to a few tens of meters. Mineralogical parameters, such as anorthite content of plagioclase and Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratios of mafic minerals exhibit bimodal distributions corresponding to olivine and Fe-Ti oxide gabbros, respectively. When the two major gabbro types are looked at separately, several downhole mineralogical cycles are recognized. The Fe-Ti oxide gabbros exhibit two such cycles with plagioclase becoming more sodic and mafic minerals becoming more iron-rich downward in the drill core. The olivine gabbros and troctolites, however, exhibit two cycles showing an upward increase in sodium in plagioclase and iron in mafic minerals. The mineralogical variations of these gabbros and the intrusive contact relationships probably resulted from downward intrusion of evolved magma into underlying solid or almost solidified olivine gabbros and troctolite. The dense evolved melt at the top of the cumulus pile probably formed from the crystallization of olivine gabbro cumulates followed by extreme fractional crystallization of residual melt in an isolated, ephemeral magma chamber. The interlayered occurrence of evolved and primitive gabbros from Hole 735B represents a typical section of lower ocean crust formed at a very slow spreading ridge.

The Lower Cretaceous tholeiitic basalt cored at Site 738, on the southernmost part of the Kerguelen Plateau, shows anomalous Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositions compared to other lavas from Kerguelen Island and the Kerguelen Plateau. The strongly negative value of eNd (- 8.5) and high 207Pb/204Pb ratio (15.71) reflect a long-term evolution in a source high in Nd/Sm and µ. These geochemical properties, not observed in the Indian Ocean mantle plumes (St. Paul, Kerguelen Islands), have been reported for alkali lavas erupted in East Antarctica, thus suggesting that they originate from the Gondwana subcontinental lithosphere.

The carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of selected bryozoan skeletons from upper Pleistocene bryozoan mounds in the Great Australian Bight (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 182; Holes 1129C, 1131A, and 1132B) were determined. Cyclostome bryozoans, Idmidronea spp. and Nevianipora sp., have low to intermediate magnesian calcite skeletons (1.5-10.0 and 0.9-6.4 molar percentage [mol%] MgCO3, respectively), but a considerable number include marine cements. The cheilostome Adeonellopsis spp. are biminerallic, principally aragonite, with some high magnesian calcite (HMC) (6.6-12.1 mol% MgCO3). The HMC fraction of Adeonellopsis has lower d13C and similar d18O values compared with the aragonite fraction. Reexamination of modern bryozoan isotopic composition shows that skeletons of Adeonellopsis spp. and Nevianipora sp. form close to oxygen isotopic equilibrium with their ambient water. Therefore, changes in glacial-interglacial oceanographic conditions are preserved in the oxygen isotopic profiles. The bryozoan oxygen isotopic profiles are correlated well with marine isotope Stages 1-8 in Holes 1129C and 1132B and to Stages 1-4(?) in Hole 1131A. The horizons of the bryozoan mounds that yield skeletons with heavier oxygen isotopic values can be correlated with isotope Stages 2, 4(?), 6, and 8 in Hole 1129C; Stages 2 and 4(?) in Hole 1131A; and Stages 2, 4, 6, and 8 in Hole 1132B. These results provide supporting evidence for a model for bryozoan mound formation, in which the mounds were formed during intensified upwelling and increased trophic resources during glacial periods.

Geochemical (atomic absorption, neutron activation analyses), mineralogical (microprobe), and radiometric (40K - 40Ar) data are presented for five basalts from the Guatemala Trench area (Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 84). Strong geochemical and mineralogical differences distinguish two types among these basalts: (1) One basalt (Sample 567A-19,CC), recovered below Upper Cretaceous limestone has the following characteristics: it is quartz normative and has low TiO2, content, as well as low amounts of Cr, Ni and other transition metals, an LREE depleted pattern, and affinities of clinopyroxene phenocryst plotted into the field of tholeiitic and calc-alkalic pyroxenes. (2) Four alkaline basalts, recovered from the mafic and ultramafic acoustic basement, are nepheline normative and show high TiO2 content, high amounts of Cr, Ni and so on, an LREE enriched pattern and compositions of clinopyroxene phenocryst plotted close to or within the field of alkali basalt pyroxenes. These basalts are comparable to those recognized in the lower part of the Santa Elena complex and are clearly different from the oceanic basalts of the Cocos Plate. The radiometric age of the orogenic basalt seems to be close to 80 Ma. The alkaline basalts are clearly older, even if a discrepancy appears between the results of different analyses because of the secondary effects of alteration.

The four holes (including a re-entry hole) drilled at Site 433 allow determination of the sedimentary sequence of Suiko Seamount in the Emperor chain. The holes are in a small graben basin situated within a lateral lagoon on the seamount. The sedimentary deposits range from the Paleocene to the upper Pliocene and are not uniform and continuous. A major hiatus exists at the top of the lower Eocene reef sediment, below the lower and upper Miocene pelagic sediments. The depositional history and succession of environments are shown by mineralogical and geochemical changes in the sediments.
