El febrer passat, en aquesta mateixa secció, parlava de la teoria del disseny intel·ligent, que intenta conjugar la teoria neodarwinista de l'evolució amb una certa intervenció divina. Fa un mes, la revista 'Nature' va publicar un estudi sobre el suport que aquesta teoria té als EUA, que contrasta vivament amb un estudi igual que s'acaba de fer a Catalunya.

Teores de nitrato (NO3-) e amônio (NH4+) nas águas do aqüífero Barreiras nos bairros do Reduto, Nazaré e Umarizal - Belém/PA

This paper evaluates the occurrence of nitrate and ammonium in the Barreiras aquifer in the metropolitan area of Belém, Pará State, Brazil. The results show that some wells display ammonium and nitrate concentrations above or close to the limits of water potability regulations. The main cause of the pollution of these waters is related the local disposal of domestic effluents and/or leakage from pipes of old sewage systems.

Wet and dry (dust) deposition was measured in the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. VWM pH was 5.3. Non-sea-salt (nss) SO4(2-) comprised 97% of total SO4(2-). The molar ratio [2(nss-SO4(2-)) + NO3-]/[NH4+ + H+] was 1.1, suggesting that pH is predominantly controlled by H2SO4, HNO3, and NH3. Wet deposition of NH4+, NO3-, and nss-SO4(2-) was respectively 0.59, 0.25, and 0.30 kmol ha-1 yr-1. Assuming that dry deposition of N can comprise 30-50% of its total (dry + wet) deposition, the latter is estimated to be 1.2-1.7 kmol ha-1 yr-1 (17-24 kg N ha-1 yr-1).

Evaluation of the throughfall and stemflow nutrient contents in mixed and pure plantations of Acacia mangium, Pseudosamenea guachapele and Eucalyptus grandis

The interception of the rainfall by the forest canopy has great relevance to the nutrient geochemistry cycle in low fertility tropical soils under native or cultivated forests. However, little is known about the modification of the rainfall water quality and hydrological balance after interception by the canopies of eucalyptus under pure and mixed plantations with leguminous species, in Brazil. Samples of rainfall (RF), throughfall (TF) and stemflow (SF) were collected and analyzed in pure plantations of mangium (nitrogen fixing tree -NFT), guachapele (NFT) and eucalyptus (non-nitrogen fixing tree -NNFT) and in a mixed stand of guachapele and eucalyptus in Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nine stemflow collectors (in selected trees) and nine pluviometers were randomly disposed under each stand and three pluviometers were used to measure the incident rainfall during 5.5 months. Mangium conveyed 33.4% of the total rainfall for its stem. An estimative based on corrections for the average annual precipitation (1213 mm) indicated that the rainfall's contribution to the nutrient input (kg ha-1) was about 8.42; 0.95; 19.04; 6.74; 4.72 and 8.71 kg ha-1 of N-NH4+, P, K+, Ca+2, Mg+2 and Na+, respectively. Throughfall provided the largest contributions compared to the stemflow nutrient input. The largest inputs of N-NH4+ (15.03 kg ha-1) and K+ (179.43 kg ha-1) were observed under the guachapele crown. Large amounts of Na+ denote a high influence of the sea. Mangium was the most adapted species to water competitiveness. Comparatively to pure stand of eucalyptus, the mixed plantation intensifies the N, Ca and Mg leaching by the canopy, while the inputs of K and P were lower under these plantations.

Megillat ha-Megalleh av Abraham bar Hijja (Spanien, 12. årh.) är bäst känd som en samling av messianska beräkningar. Men boken som helhet innehåller, vid sidan om beräkningarna, varierande innehåll såsom filosofi, bibeltolkning och astrologi. Bar Hijja framför en argumentering, inför det växande inflytandet på judarna från de kristna, för att den judiska religionen, och särskilt judarnas väntan på den messianska tiden, fortfarande är giltiga. Bar Hijja utvecklar, med hjälp av den judiska traditionen, arabiska vetenskapliga och andra källor samt omdefinierade kristna ideér, en syn på historien som en determinisk händelselopp som består av goda och dåliga tider men eventuellt skall kulminera i en messiansk tid för judarna. Boken innehåller även en omfattande astrologisk kommentar på historien, som bland annat beskriver uppkomsten och historien av de kristna och muslimska världsmakterna, samt deras förhållanden med judar. Boken är tydligt avsett att övertyga judarna att förbli judar, genom att argumentera med hjälp av både judiskt och ickejudiskt material, att oavsett läget i exil har de den framtid som de väntat för. I det medeltida sammanhanget syns detta inte enbart som en religiös fråga utan också som en politisk strävan till att säkerställa det judiska samfundets framtid.

Crescimento e conteúdo de frutanos em plantas de Vernonia herbacea (Vell.) Rusby submetidas à adubação nitrogenada

Vernonia herbacea acumula altas concentrações de frutanos do tipo inulina em seus órgãos subterrâneos de reserva, denominados rizóforos. Foi estudada a influência da adubação nitrogenada no crescimento dessa espécie e na produção de frutanos. Plantas obtidas a partir de fragmentos de rizóforos foram cultivadas em área de cerrado onde receberam três doses de nitrogênio: 6, 12 e 24 kg N.ha-1 na forma de (NH4)2SO4. Plantas jovens, com seis meses de idade, mostraram aumento em altura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea e dos rizóforos em resposta ao aumento da dose de nitrogênio. Por outro lado, o teor de frutanos decresceu com o aumento da concentração do nitrogênio. Após doze meses de cultivo, o crescimento das plantas foi estimulado apenas nas doses entre 6 e 12 kg.ha-1 de nitrogênio. Os resultados mostraram, também, que o teor de frutanos em plantas jovens está correlacionado negativamente tanto ao crescimento quanto às concentrações crescentes de nitrogênio. Já as plantas tratadas com 24 kg N.ha-1 chegaram a acumular 6,0 g de frutanos por planta, enquanto nas plantas controle, que não receberam N suplementar, esse valor foi de 3,5 g. Assim, aplicação de 24 kg N.ha-1 é recomendada para uma colheita antecipada (12 meses) visando à produção de frutanos.
