Reaction of K-3[Cr(ox)(3)] (ox = oxalate) with nickel(II) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) in aqueous solution resulted in isolation of the bimetallic assembly [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O. The polymeric complex {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) has been prepared by reaction of nickel(II) perchlorate and tren in aqueous solution. From the same reaction mixture the complex [Ni-2(tren)(2)(aepd)][ClO4](4). 2H(2)O (aepd = N-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine-3,4-diamine), in which a bridging tren ligand contains a carbon-carbon bond between two arms forming a substituted pyrrolidine, has been isolated. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic susceptibility (300-4.2 K) and magnetization data (2, 4 K, H = 0-5 T) for {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) (300 K , 4.23 mu(B)) exhibit evidence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling and zero field splitting (2J = -1.8 cm(-1); \ D\ = 2 cm(-1)) at low temperature. For [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O the susceptibility data at 300 K are indicative of uncoupled nickel(II) and chromium(III) sites with zero-field splitting and intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling predicted at low temperature.

The macrocyclic cobalt hexaamines [Co(trans-diammac)](3+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](3+) (diammac = 6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) are capable of reducing the overpotential for hydrogen evolution on a mercury cathode in aqueous solution. Protons are reduced in a catalytic process involving reoxidation of the Co-II species to its parent Co-III complex. The cycle is robust at neutral pH with no decomposition of catalyst. The stability of the [Co(trans-diammac)](2+) and [Co(cis-diammac)](2+) complexes depends on the pH of the solution and the coordinating properties of the supporting electrolyte. Electrochemical studies indicate that the adsorbed Co-II complex on the surface of mercury is the active catalyst for the reduction of protons to dihydrogen.

The title pendent-arm macrocyclic hexaamine ligand binds stereospecifically in a hexadentate manner, and we report here its isomorphous Ni-II and Zn-II complexes (both as perchlorate salts), namely (cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine-kappa(6)N)nickel(II) diperchlorate, [Ni(C12H30N6)](ClO4)(2), and (cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine-kappa(6)N)zinc(II) diperchlorate, [Zn(C-12 H30N6)](ClO4)(2). Distortion of the N-M-N valence angles from their ideal octahedral values becomes more pronounced with increasing metal-ion size and the present results are compared with other structures of this ligand.

Two N-based isomeric copper(II) complexes of the macrocycle trans-6,13-dimethyl-6,13-bis(dimethylamino)1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L(3)) have been synthesized and characterised spectroscopically and structurally: alpha-[CuL(3)(OH2)(2)]Cl-2, monoclinic, space group C2/m, a = 12.908(4), b = 12.433(2), c = 7.330(2) Angstrom, beta = 105.87(2)degrees, Z = 2; beta-[CuL(3)(OClO3)(2)]. 2H(2)O, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, a = 9.708(3), b = 9.686(3), c = 14.202(4) Angstrom, beta = 106.17(1)degrees, Z = 2. The two isomers exhibit very similar co-ordination spheres but significantly different visible electronic maxima. This difference is attributed to an intramolecular N ... H contact between the pendant dimethylamino group and an adjacent secondary amine H atom.

Two new macropolycyclic hexaamines L(2) and L(4) as their copper(II) complexes have been isolated as products from the condensation of the diamino-substituted macrocyclic complex trans-(6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclo-tetradecane-6,13-diamine)copper(II) [CuL(1)](2+) with aqueous formaldehyde. Both of the complexes exhibit methylene bridges between the pendant amine and the adjacent co-ordinated macrocyclic N-donors. Their crystal structures have been determined: [CuL(2)(NCS)][SCN], triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 7.133(2), b = 9.813(2), c = 16.745(3) Angstrom, alpha = 101.05(2), beta = 99.36(2), gamma = 99.77(2)degrees, Z = 2; [CuL(4)Cl][ClO4]. H2O, triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 9.3327(8), b = 10.8989(6), c = 12.672(1) Angstrom, alpha = 68.591(6), beta = 78.899(6), gamma = 87.384(6)degrees, Z = 2. The complexes exhibit square-pyramidal geometries, and significantly lower-energy electronic maxima relative to their parent complex [CuL(1)](2+). Electrochemistry of [CuL(2)](2+) revealed a reversible Cu-II-Cu-I redox couple, by contrast to those of macromonocyclic analogues.

A number of N- and C-based diastereomeric copper(II) complexes of the pendant-arm macrocyclic hexaamines trans- and cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine (L-1 and L-2) have been isolated and characterised. The crystal structures of the complexes RRSS-[CuL1(OH2)(2)][ClO4](2), SSRR-[Cu(H2L1)(OClO3)(2)]-[ClO4](2) . 2H(2)O RSRS-[CuL1(OClO3)]ClO4, RSRS-[CuL2(OClO3)]ClO4 and RRSS-[Cu(H2L2)(OClO3)(2)][ClO4](2) have been determined. Some unusual structural and spectroscopic variations are found across this series of diastereomers. The protonation constants of the pendant primary amines are dependent on the relative dispositions of the adjacent macrocyclic secondary amine H atoms, which is indicative of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions.

New mono- and bis-chelated zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes of formula, [M(dpksbz)NCS] (dpksbz = anionic form of the di-2-pyridylketone Schiff base of S-benzyldithiocarbazate) and [M(dpksbz)(2)] (M = Zn-II, Cd-II) have been prepared and characterized. The structure of the bis-ligand complex, [Zn(dpksbZ)(2)] has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex has a distorted octahedral geometry in which the ligands are coordinated to the zinc(II) ion as uninegatively charged tridentate chelates via the thiolate sulfur atoms, the azomethine nitrogen atoms and the pyridine nitrogen atoms. The distortion from a regular octahedral geometry is attributed to the restricted bite angles of the Schiff base ligands. X-ray structural analysis shows that the [Cd(dpksbz)NCS](2) complex is a centrosymmetric dimer in which each of the cadmium(II) ions adopts a five-coordinate, approximately square-pyramidal configuration with the Schiff base acting as a tetradentate chelating agent coordinating a cadmium(II) ion via one of the pyridine nitrogen atoms, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom; the second pyridine nitrogen atom is coordinated to the other cadmium(II) ion of the dimer. The fifth coordination position around each cadmium(II) is occupied by an N-bonded thiocyanate ligand. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The pentadentate chelating agent, 2,6-diacetylpyridinebis(S-benzyldithiocarbazate) (H2SNNNS) reacts with zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions forming stable complexes of empirical formula, [M(SNNNS)] (M=Zn2+, Cd2+; SNNNS2 =doubly deprotonated anionic form of the Schiff base). These complexes have been characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. IR and H-1 NMR spectral evidence indicate that the Schiff base coordinates to the zinc(II) and cadmium(II) ions via the pyridine nitrogen atoms, the azomethine nitrogen atoms and the mercaptide sulfur atoms. The crystal and molecular structure of the zinc(II) complex has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The complex is a dimer in which the pyridine nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolate sulfur atom from one ligand coordinate to one of the zinc(II) ions whereas the azomethine and thiolate sulfur atoms from another ligand complete pentacoordination around the zinc(II) ion, the ligands being coordinated in their deprotonated forms. The coordination geometry about each zinc(II) can be considered as intermediate between a square-pyramid and trigonal-bipyramid. The cadmium(II) complex is also assigned with a dimeric structure. Mononuclear manganese(II) [Mn(kappa O-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), nickel(II) [Ni(kappa O-2, kappa N-L)(H2O)(3)] (5), cadmium(II) [Cd(kappa O-2-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(3)] (7), tetranuclear zinc(II) [Zn-4(mu-OH)(2)(1 kappa O:2 kappa O-HL)(4)(kappa O-HL)(2)(H2O)(4)] (6) and polynuclear aqua sodium(I) [Na(H2O)(2)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(HL)(n) (2) and magnesium(II) [Mg(OH)(H2O)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(-HL)(n) (3) complexes were synthesized using 3-(2-carboxyphenyl-hydrazone)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L, 1) as a ligand precursor. The complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR (for 2, 3, 6 and 7) spectroscopies. Mono- or dianionic deprotonated derivatives of H2L display different coordination modes and lead to topologies and nuclearities of the complexes depending on metal ions and conditions used for the syntheses. Extensive intermolecular H-bonds form supramolecular arrangements in 1D chains (4 and 6), 1D chains of the organic anion and 2D networks of the metal-aqua aggregates (2 and 3), 2D networks (7) or even 3D frameworks (5). Electrochemical studies, by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, show ligand centred redox processes as corroborated by theoretical DFT calculations in terms of LUMO and HOMO compositions. Site-directed mutagenesis and molecular dynamics simulations of the alpha 1B-adrenergic receptor (AR) were combined to explore the potential molecular changes correlated with the transition from R (inactive state) to R (active state). Using molecular dynamics analysis we compared the structural/dynamic features of constitutively active mutants with those of the wild type and of an inactive alpha 1B-AR to build a theoretical model which defines the essential features of R and R. The results of site-directed mutagenesis were in striking agreement with the predictions of the model supporting the following hypothesis. (i) The equilibrium between R and R depends on the equilibrium between the deprotonated and protonated forms, respectively, of D142 of the DRY motif. In fact, replacement of D142 with alanine confers high constitutive activity to the alpha 1B-AR. (ii) The shift of R143 of the DRY sequence out of a conserved 'polar pocket' formed by N63, D91, N344 and Y348 is a feature common to all the active structures, suggesting that the role of R143 is fundamental for mediating receptor activation. Disruption of these intramolecular interactions by replacing N63 with alanine constitutively activates the alpha 1B-AR. Our findings might provide interesting generalities about the activation process of G protein-coupled receptors.

Capsules were prepared from chitosan (QTS)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend by saline coacervation and then by formalization. A adsorbent based on chitosan, insoluble on acid solution, was obtained. The morphology, average diameters of QTS/PVA capsules and their pores were studied by using scanning electron microscopy. The entrapment-adsorption of dimethylglioxime and ethylenediaminetetracetate by the capsules were studied. The removal of the ion nickel (II) and copper (II), was more effective than by using unloaded capsules.

The crystal and molecular structures of [bis(5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate)tetraaquamanganese(II)], [pentaaqua(5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoato)cobalt(II)] (5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate), [pentaaqua(5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoato)nickel(II)] (5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate) and [aquabis(5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoate)zinc(II)] monohydrate were determined by a single-crystal X-ray analysis. Mn(H2O)4L2 (where L = C8H6ClO3) crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c. [Co(H2O)5L]L and [Ni(H2O)5L]L both are isostructural, space group P212121. The crystals of [Zn(H2O)L2] H2O are monoclinic, space group Pc. Mn(II) ion is positioned at the crystallographic symmetry center. Mn(II) and Co(II) ions adopt the distorted octahedral coordination but Zn(II) tetrahedral one.The carboxylate groups in the complexes with M(II) cations function as monodentate, bidentate and/or free COO-groups. The ligands exist in the crystals as aquaanions. The complexes of 5-chloro-2-methoxybenzoates with Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) form bilayer structure.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).
