Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is usually diagnosed in an advanced stage. The prognosis depends highly on the amount of the residual tumor in surgery. In patients with extensive disease, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is used to diminish the tumor load before debulking surgery. New non-invasive methods are needed to preoperatively evaluate the disease dissemination and operability. [18F] FDG PET/CT (Positron emission tomography/computed tomography) is a promising method for cancer diagnostics and staging. The biomarker profiles during treatment can predict patient’s outcome. This prospective study included 41 EOC patients, 21 treated with primary surgery and 20 with NACT and interval surgery. The performances of preoperative contrast enhanced PET/CT (PET/ceCT) and diagnostic CT (ceCT) were compared. Perioperative visual estimation of tumor spread was studied in primary and interval surgery. The profile of the serum marker HE4 (Human epididymis 4) during primary chemotherapy was evaluated. In primary surgery, surgical findings were found to form an adequate reference standard for imaging studies. After NACT, the sensitivity for visual estimation of cancer dissemination was significantly worse. Preoperative PET/ceCT was more effective than ceCT alone in detecting extra-abdominal disease spread. The high number of supradiaphragmatic lymph node metastases detected by PET/ceCT at the time of diagnosis brings new insight in EOC spread patterns. The sensitivity of both PET/CT and ceCT remained modest in intra-abdominal areas important to operability. The HE4 profile was in concordance with the CA125 profile during primary chemotherapy. Its role in the evaluation of EOC chemotherapy response will be clarified in further studies.

In the last five years, a number of detailed anatomical, electrophysiological, optical imaging and simulation studies performed in a variety of non-human species have revealed that the functional organization of callosal connections between primary visual areas is more elaborate than previously thought. Callosal cell bodies and terminals are clustered in columns whose correspondence to features mapped in the visual cortex, such as orientation and ocularity, are starting to be understood. Callosal connections are not restricted to the vertical midline representation nor do they establish merely point-to-point retinotopic correspondences across the hemispheres, as traditionally believed. In addition, anatomical studies have revealed the existence of an ipsilateral component of callosal axons. The aim of this short review is to propose how these new data can be integrated into an updated scheme of the circuits responsible for assembling the primary visual field map.

In recent times the packaging industry is finding means to maximize profit. Wood used to be the most advantageous and everyday material for packaging, worktables, counters, constructions, interiors, tools and as materials and utensils in the food companies in the world. The use of wood has declined vigorously, and other materials like plastic, ceramic, stainless steel, concrete, and aluminum have taken its place. One way that the industry could reduce its cost is by finding possibilities of using wood for primary packaging after which it can be safely recycled or burned as a carbon source for energy. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to investigate the possibility of press-forming a wood film into primary packaging. In order to achieve the stated objectives, discussion on major characteristics of wood in terms of structure, types and application were studied. Two different wood species, pine and birch were used for the experimental work. These were provided by a local carpentry workshop in Lappeenranta and a workshop in Ruokolahti supervised by Professor Timo Kärki. Laboratory tests were carried out at Lappeenranta University of Technology FMS workshop on Stenhøj EPS40 M hydraulic C-frame press coupled with National Instruments VI Logger and on the Adjustable packaging line machine at LUT Packaging laboratory. The tests succeeded better on the LUT packaging line than on the Stenhoj equipment due to the integrated heating system in the machine. However, there is much work to be done before the quality of a tray produced from the wood film is comparable to that of the wood plastic composite tray.

Gastric cancer is the second most frequent type of neoplasia and also the second most important cause of death in the world. Virtually all the established cell lines of gastric neoplasia were developed in Asian countries, and western countries have contributed very little to this area. In the present study we describe the establishment of the cell line ACP01 and characterize it cytogenetically by means of in vitro immortalization. Cells were transformed from an intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma (T4N2M0) originating from a 48-year-old male patient. This is the first gastric adenocarcinoma cell line established in Brazil. The most powerful application of the cell line ACP01 is in the assessment of cytotoxicity. Solid tumor cell lines from different origins have been treated with several conventional and investigational anticancer drugs. The ACP01 cell line is triploid, grows as a single, non-organized layer, similar to fibroblasts, with focus formation, heterogeneous division, and a cell cycle of approximately 40 h. Chromosome 8 trisomy, present in 60% of the cells, was the most frequent cytogenetic alteration. These data lead us to propose a multifactorial triggering of gastric cancer which evolves over multiple stages involving progressive genetic changes and clonal expansion.
