Functional and historical determinants of shape in the scapula of Xenarthran mammals: Evolution of a complex morphological structure

The mammalian scapula is a complex morphological structure, composed of two ossification plates that fuse into a single structure. Most studies on morphological differentiation in the scapula have considered it to be a simple, spatially integrated structure, primarily influenced by the important locomotor function presented by this element. We used recently developed geometric morphometric techniques to test and quantify functional and phylogenetic influences on scapular shape variation in fossil and extant xenarthran mammals. The order Xenarthra is well represented in the fossil record and presents a stable phylogenetic hypothesis for its genealogical history. In addition, its species present a large variety of locomotor habits. Our results show that approximately half of the shape variation in the scapula is due to phylogenetic heritage. This is contrary to the view that the scapula is influenced only by functional demands. There are large-scale shape transformations that provide biomechanical adaptation for the several habits (arboreality, terrestriality, and digging), and small scale-shape transformations (mostly related to the coracoid process) that are not influenced by function. A nonlinear relationship between morphometric and phylogenetic distances indicates the presence of a complex mixture of evolutionary processes acting on shape differentiation of the scapula. J. Caste in the swarming wasps: 'queenless' societies in highly social insects

Morphometric data for 30 species of swarming wasps (Vespidae: Polistinae: Epiponini) are presented, representing all currently recognized genera. Data are coded according to whether females that were shown by dissection to be egglayers are larger, similar, or smaller for each dimension than non-egglayers. These data are analysed in a phylogenetic framework with primitively social Polistes and Mischocyttarus as outgroups. Representative measurements are illustrated to show that most genera of Epiponini appear to have ancestry in a lineage that has no queen caste comparable with either the primitively social outgroups, or the more derived species of the tribe. This analysis indicates that a conspiracy of workers that operates without a queen characterizes the societies of many Epiponini, or their recent ancestors. (c) 2008 The Linnean Society of London.

Testemunho, juízo político e história

A partir de um comentário sobre as propriedades características do gênero testemunhal, descrevem-se as respectivas situações ideológicas que presidiram à recepção de depoimentos sobre os campos de concentração nazistas e comunistas quando da sua publicação no Ocidente. Ao sublinhar a dimensão moral do testemunho e mostrar que os saberes dele advindos baseiam-se em práticas de reconhecimento, aponta-se, complementarmente, para situações em que o historiador vê-se por ele interpelado. Situações em que sua arte depende unicamente do ouvido que prestar ao apelo testemunhal. Nesse momento o testemunho não é mais fonte, pode tornar-se algo como um ultimato. Permutadas, assim, as posições, não fica o historiador exposto ao testemunho, carregando a inteira responsabilidade de sua audiência? Não deve o cultor de Clio a certos endereçamentos, por lacunares e subjetivos que sejam?
