The Greene County, Iowa, overlay project, completed in October 1973, was evaluated in October 1978, after five years in October 1983, after ten years and most recently in October 1988 after fifteen years of service. The 33 fibrous concrete sections, four CRCP sections, two mesh reinforced and two plain concrete sections with doweled reinforcement were rated relative to each other on a scale of 0 to 100. The rating was conducted by original members of the Project Planning Committee, Iowa DOT, Iowa County, Federal Highway Administration and industry representatives. In all, there were 23, 25 and 17 representatives who rated the project in 1978, 1983 and 1988 respectively. The 23, 25 or 17 values were then averaged to provide a final rating number for each section or variable. All experimental overlay sections had performed quite well in the period from five through 15 years, experiencing only limited additional deterioration.

The three miles of fibrous concrete resurfacing in Greene County, Iowa were placed in September and early October, 1973. It was recognized in advance that cracking and other performance characteristics of the fibrous concrete sections and of the control sections would be major factors in the evaluation of the project. A low level aerial survey was made of the old pavement. During construction of the resurfacing, the aerial survey was checked to insure that cracks in the old pavement were referenced to the 100 ft. station marks placed in the resurfacing. A final report for research project HR-165, based upon overall performance evaluation was published in December 1978.

The rating was conducted by original members of the Project Planning Committee, Iowa DOT, Iowa County, Federal Highway Administration, University of Illinois and industry representatives. In all, there were 23 and 24 representatives who rated the project in 1978 and 1983 respectively. The 23 or 24 values were then averaged to provide a final rating number for each section or variable. All experimental overlay sections had performed quite well in the period from five through 10 years, experiencing only limited additional deterioration. Based upon this relatively good performance through 10 years, the sections will be maintained for further research with another evaluation at 15 years. The 4" thick nonfibrous mesh reinforced continuous reinforced concrete pavement overlay sections provided the best performance in this research project. Another nonfibrous 5" thick bar reinforced overlay section performed almost as well. The best performance of a fibrous reinforced concrete section was obtained with 160 pounds of fiber per cubic yard.

Soluble MHC-peptide complexes, commonly known as tetramers, allow the detection and isolation of antigen-specific T cells. Although other types of soluble MHC-peptide complexes have been introduced, the most commonly used MHC class I staining reagents are those originally described by Altman and Davis. As these reagents have become an essential tool for T cell analysis, it is important to have a large repertoire of such reagents to cover a broad range of applications in cancer research and clinical trials. Our tetramer collection currently comprises 228 human and 60 mouse tetramers and new reagents are continuously being added. For the MHC II tetramers, the list currently contains 21 human (HLA-DR, DQ and DP) and 5 mouse (I-A(b)) tetramers. Quantitative enumeration of antigen-specific T cells by tetramer staining, especially at low frequencies, critically depends on the quality of the tetramers and on the staining procedures. For conclusive longitudinal monitoring, standardized reagents and analysis protocols need to be used. This is especially true for the monitoring of antigen-specific CD4+ T cells, as there are large variations in the quality of MHC II tetramers and staining conditions. This commentary provides an overview of our tetramer collection and indications on how tetramers should be used to obtain optimal results.

Breakthrough technologies which now enable the sequencing of individual genomes will irreversibly modify the way diseases are diagnosed, predicted, prevented and treated. For these technologies to reach their full potential requires, upstream, access to high-quality biomedical data and samples from large number of properly informed and consenting individuals and, downstream, the possibility to transform the emerging knowledge into a clinical utility. The Lausanne Institutional Biobank was designed as an integrated, highly versatile infrastructure to harness the power of these emerging technologies and catalyse the discovery and development of innovative therapeutics and biomarkers, and advance the field of personalised medicine. Described here are its rationale, design and governance, as well as parallel initiatives which have been launched locally to address the societal, ethical and technological issues associated with this new bio-resource. Since January 2013, inpatients admitted at Lausanne CHUV University Hospital have been systematically invited to provide a general consent for the use of their biomedical data and samples for research, to complete a standardised questionnaire, to donate a 10-ml sample of blood for future DNA extraction and to be re-contacted for future clinical trials. Over the first 18 months of operation, 14,459 patients were contacted, and 11,051 accepted to participate in the study. This initial 18-month experience illustrates that a systematic hospital-based biobank is feasible; it shows a strong engagement in research from the patient population in this University Hospital setting, and the need for a broad, integrated approach for the future of medicine to reach its full potential.

Qualitative research and psycho-cultural approaches to deviant behaviour¦In this paper, the authors discuss the relevance of some historical, theoretical and¦methodological features of qualitative research for a psycho-cultural approach to¦deviance. Specifically, three methods are presented: ethnography, life stories and¦grounded theory. Some common features of these methods are: their potentialities of¦articulation with other methods, their plasticity and their procedures grounded in¦research contexts, experiences and meanings lived by participants. The role of the¦researcher, as well as the constructed and dialogical characteristics of both process¦and products of research, are also emphasised in these approaches. In this way,¦qualitative methods seem particularly adequate to a psycho-cultural approach to¦deviance, allowing the research of "hidden" phenomena and an understanding of¦deviance that takes into account its cultural norms. Thus, qualitative research is as a¦methodological device which allows to get beyond the traditional ethnocentrism of psychology.
