Report on IEA Task-14 activities on solar collector systems conference in Rome, 25-29 Jan. 1993

The memebers of IEA (International Energy Agency) Task 14 (Advaced Active Solar Systems) met in Rome during January 1993. The latest developments in several countries were presented and discussed during this meeting. This report describes briefly the recent work carried out on small scale systems in the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) working group of Task 14, as reported by the representatives from Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland and Switzerland. Klaus Lorenz, SERC, attended the meeting as observer and presented our work on small-tube heat exchangers. Several participants expressed their interest. A summary of his presentation is included in this report.

The core characteristics and nursing care activities in psychiatric intensive care units in Sweden

Internationally, research on psychiatric intensive care units (PICUs) commonly reportsresults from demographic studies such as criteria for admission, need for involuntary treatment, andthe occurrence of violent behaviour. A few international studies describe the caring aspect of thePICUs based specifically on caregivers’ experiences. The concept of PICU in Sweden is not clearlydefined. The aim of this study is to describe the core characteristics of a PICU in Sweden and todescribe the care activities provided for patients admitted to the PICUs. Critical incident techniquewas used as the research method. Eighteen caregivers at a PICU participated in the study bycompleting a semistructured questionnaire. In-depth interviews with three nurses and two assistantnurses also constitute the data. An analysis of the content identified four categories that characterizethe core of PICU: the dramatic admission, protests and refusal of treatment, escalating behaviours, andtemporarily coercive measure. Care activities for PICUs were also analysed and identified as controlling– establishing boundaries, protecting – warding off, supporting – giving intensive assistance, andstructuring the environment. Finally, the discussion put focus on determining the intensive aspect ofpsychiatric care which has not been done in a Swedish perspective before. PICUs were interpreted asa level of care as it is composed by limited structures and closeness in care.

Machine Translation and the Disruption of Foreign Language Learning Activities

This study examines the question of how language teachers in a highly technologyfriendly university environment view machine translation and the implications that this has for the personal learning environments of students. It brings an activity-theory perspective to the question, examining the ways that the introduction of new tools can disrupt the relationship between different elements in an activity system. This perspective opens up for an investigation of the ways that new tools have the potential to fundamentally alter traditional learning activities. In questionnaires and group discussions, respondents showed general agreement that although use of machine translation by students could be considered cheating, students are bound to use it anyway, and suggested that teachers focus on the kinds of skills students would need when using machine translation and design assignments and exams to practice and assess these skills. The results of the empirical study are used to reflect upon questions of what the roles of teachers and students are in a context where many of the skills that a person needs to be able to interact in a foreign language increasingly can be outsourced to laptops and smartphones.

"Roll Up and Spend Your Last Dime". The Merry-go-round of Children`s Extra-curricular Activities in Modern Society.

"Step up and play" begins the famous hit song 'Penny Arcade'. And so it
was for thousands of Australian families, as their eldest child began school
this year, and the associated endless merry-go-round of extra-curricular
activities also began. But how many of those families realise that the song ends "Roll up and spend your last dime!"? While the perceived benefits of
children's involvement in extracurricular activities are many and are widely accepted, there are also costs, not only in terms of money but also in terms
of time. Evidence from a study conducted in Melbourne highlights the fact that, for many families such as those on low incomes and those headed by a single parent, both the time and the money costs may be prohibitive. This article highlights parents' perceptions of the benefits·and costs of children's extra-curricular activities, and explores the implications of changing family and household structures for families' capacity to sustain such activities.

Upregulation of glutathione-related genes and enzyme activities in cultured human cells by sublethgal concentrations of inorganic arsenic

Inorganic arsenic (jAs), a known human carcinogen, acts as a tumor promoter in part by inducing a rapid burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mammalian cells. This causes oxidative stress and a subsequent increase in the level of cellular glutathione (GSH). Glutathione, a ubiquitous reducing sulfhydryl tripeptide, is involved in ROS detoxification and its increase may be part of an adaptive response to the oxidative stress. Glutathione related enzymes including glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) also play key roles in these processes. In this study the regulatory effects of inorganic arsenite (As111) on the activities of GSH-related enzymes were investigated in cultured human keratinocytes. Substantial increases in GR enzyme activity and mRNA levels were shown in keratinocytes and other human cell lines after exposure to low, subtoxic, micromolar concentrations of As111 for 24 h. Upregulation of GSH synthesis paralleled the upregulation of GR as shown by increases in glutamatecysteine lyase (GeL) enzyme activity and mRNA levels, cystine uptake, and intracellular GSH levels. Glutathione S-transferase activity was also shown to increase slightly in keratinocytes, but not in fibroblasts or breast tumor cells. Overall the results show that sublethal arsenic induces a multicomponent response in human keratinocytes that involves upregulation of parts, but not all of the GSH system and counteracts the acute toxic effects of jAs. The upregulation of GR has not previously been shown to be an integral part of this response, although GR is critical for maintaining levels of reduced GSH.
