A series of shapes of silver nanoplates were achieved by adjusting the concentration of citrate in the colloid in the photoinduced process. The local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the silver nanoplates could be tuned gradually in a range from 740 to 440 nm. In contrast, the LSPR band can be photomediated again to the long wavelength region within 620-690 nm only by adding more citrate to the colloidal system. The initial silver nanoprisms converted to the discal shape under the light effect. In this conversion, the coupling effect of the plasmon resonance and the light source speeds up the photothermal reaction. Subsequently, the reconstruction of silver nanoprisms from the nanodisks took place in the presence of more citrate through the photoconversion.

The mechanical behaviours of metal foams greatly depend on their cell topology, including cell shape, cell size etc. as well as relative density and material properties of the cell wall. However, the cell shape effect on the mechanical behaviours of such materials appears to be ignored in previous research. In this paper, both analytic and finite element models are developed and employed to investigate the effect of cell shape on the mechanical behaviour of open-cell magnesium alloy (AZ91) foams under compression, including deformation modes and failure modes. For numerical modelling, both two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) finite element models are developed to predict the compressive behaviours of typical open-cell metal foams and capture the deformation modes and failure mechanisms. Two typical cell shapes i.e. cubic and diamond are taken into consideration. To validate these models, the analytic and numerical results are compared to the experimental data. Both the numerical and experimental data indicate that the cell shape significantly affects the compression behaviour of open-cell metal foams. In general, numerical results from the three-dimensional solid-element model show better agreement with the experimental results than those from other finite element models.

The Point Distribution Model (PDM) has been successfully used in representing sets of static and moving images. A recent extension to the PDM for moving objects, the temporal PDM, has been proposed. This utilises quantities such as velocity and acceleration to more explicitly consider the characteristics of the movement and the sequencing of the changes in shape that occur. This research aims to compare the two types of model based on a series of arm movements, and to examine the characteristics of both approaches.

Within each columnar grain of a metallic film, the resistance to dislocation glide varies in function of the orientation of the slip plane with regard to the grain long axis. Plastic slip is impeded across grain boundaries and this contributes to the anisotropy of the overall mechanical response. A simplified (Taylor-type) crystal plasticity model is proposed that accounts for such effect of grain shape on the slip system selection. Assuming that dislocation density gradients are normal to the grain boundaries, backstresses developed at the onset of plasticity are estimated based on two definitions of the effective grain boundary spacing ‘‘seen’’ by individual slip systems. The first one reduces to the mean area-to-perimeter ratio of cross-sections of the grain cut parallel to the slip plane. Closed-form expressions of the average backstresses developed inside grains with spheroidal shapes are introduced in the crystal hardening law. The model reproduces the very high plastic anisotropy of electro-deposited pure iron with a strong c-fiber and a refined columnar grain structure [Yoshinaga, N., Sugiura, N., Hiwatashi, S., Ushioda, K., Kada, O., 2008. Deep drawability of electro-deposited pure iron having an extremely sharp h111i//ND texture. ISIJ Int. 48, 667–670]. It also provides valid estimates of the texture development and the influence of grain size on the yield strength.

There is a considerable gap between the law and knowledge regarding the efficacy of state-imposed sanctions to achieve several key sentencing objectives. Two sentencing objectives which often carry considerable weight in the sentencing calculus are rehabilitation and specific deterrence, despite the fact that neither has been proven to be attainable. This article examines the empirical data on whether specific deterrence and rehabilitation are attainable, and consequently whether they should be retained or abolished as sentencing objectives.
