The continuum distorted-wave eikonal initial-state (CDW-EIS) theory of Crothers and McCann (J Phys B 1983, 16, 3229) used to describe ionization in ion-atom collisions is generalized (G) to GCDW-EIS to incorporate the azimuthal angle dependence of each CDW in the final-state wave function. This is accomplished by the analytic continuation of hydrogenic-like wave functions from below to above threshold, using parabolic coordinates and quantum numbers including magnetic quantum numbers, thus providing a more complete set of states. At impact energies lower than 25 keVu(-1), the total ionization cross-section falls off, with decreasing energy, too quickly in comparison with experimental data. The idea behind and motivation for the GCDW-EIS model is to improve the theory with respect to experiment by including contributions from nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. We also therefore incidentally provide a new derivation of the theory of continuum distorted waves for zero magnetic quantum numbers while simultaneously generalizing it. Photon yields for the 1s(2)-1s2p (He-alpha) transition of He- like ions have been measured for laser irradiated, thin foils of Ti, V and Fe. The laser pulses were of 0.527 mum wavelength and of either 80 or 300 ps duration. The data shows significant shot-to-shot variation but the Ti data is broadly consistent with previous results. In this work, we extend the previous results to include, new elements, longer pulse lengths and yields measured for emission from both surfaces of the foils. We compare our data to simulations using a hydrodynamic code and a collisional radiative model.

The electron impact ionization cross sections of hydrogen-like molybdenum ions were measured with an electron beam ion trap at the electron energies of 49.4, 64.4 and 79.6 keV The results are 2.82(22) x 10(-23), 3.13(29) x 10(-23) and 3.23(51) x 10(-23) cm(2), respectively. These results are compared with the experimental results measured previously. The agreement with the results obtained with, scaling formulae is also discussed.

Electron-impact ionization cross sections have been determined for hydrogen like iron ions at selected electron energies between 1.45 and 4.3 times the threshold energy. The cross sections were obtained by measuring the equilibrium ionization balance in an electron beam ion trap. This ionization balance is obtained from x-ray measurements of radiative recombination into the K-shell of hydrogen-like and bare iron ions. The measured cross sections are compared with distorted-wave calculations and several semiempirical formulations.

We have studied the dielectronic recombination process in He-like Fe ions and have obtained the resonant strengths of the KLn (3 less than or equal to, n less than or equal to, 5) resonances. This measurement was performed with the use of an electron beam ion trap by measuring the x-ray energy emitted from highly charged ions simultaneously with the electron beam energy scanned during the measurement. The total resonant strengths obtained are 5.0 x 10(-19), 2.1 x 10(-19) and 1.1 X 10(-19) cm(2) eV, for KLM, KLN and KLO, respectively.

We have determined resonant strengths of the KLn (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonances for helium-like Ti ions and (3 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5) resonances for helium-like Fe ions. The results were obtained using the Tokyo electron beam ion trap. Characteristic X-rays from both dielectronic recombination and radiative recombination were detected as the electron beam energy was scanned through the resonances. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.
