Investigations into the parallel synthesis of selected analogues of a structurally unique pyrrole-oxazole analogue of the pyrrole insecticide pirate, are reported. Acylaminoketone salts were obtained from ketobromides in moderate to high yields and excellent purity. A number of N-tosyl pyrroles were obtained; however, formation of the target acyl tosyl pyrroles was thwarted by the stereoelectronic effects of the pyrrole substituents. During the pyrrole subunit chemistry, an interesting pyrrole derivative, vinyl pyrrole, was isolated. By restricting diversity to the aryl subunit, the parallel synthesis of selected pyrrole-oxazoles in moderate purity, was achieved when electron-donating or no groups were present on the aryl ring.

An online transaction always retrieves a large amount of information before making decisions. Currently, the parallel methods for retrieving such information can only provide a similar performance to serial methods. In this paper we first perform an analysis to determine the factors that affect the performance of exiting methods, i.e., HQR and EHQR, and show that the several of these factors are not considered by these methods. Motivated by this, we propose a new dispatch scheme called AEHQR, which takes into account the features of parallel dispatching. In addition, we provide cost models that determine the optimal performance achievable by any parallel dispatching method. Using experimental comparison, we illustrate that the AEHQR is significantly outperforms the HQR and EHQR under all conditions.

Anti-spam technology is developing rapidly in recent years. With the emerging applications of machine learning in diverse fields, researchers as well as manufacturers around the world have attempted a large number of related algorithms to prevent spam. In this paper, we designed an effective anti-spam protection system, SpamCooling, based on the mechanism of active learning and parallel heterogeneous ensemble learning techniques. The system adopts a batch method to filter spam and can be easily incorporated with existing mail clients (MUA). It can actively obtain user feedbacks for providing users with personalized spam filtering experiences. The parallel heterogeneous ensemble method can help system achieve high spam detection rate as well as low ham misclassification rate.

Collaboration between TAFE (vocational colleges) and universities in Australia in construction management has been problematic, with exchanges between the two sectors limited to linear articulation and prescribed credit transfer. Articulation pathways have traditionally been viewed as the poor relation of university entry. In 2005, the first pilot project in dual sector construction education was conducted at RMIT University in Melbourne. Higher education students completed electives in practical units within the TAFE sector. Due to the overwhelming success of the project, practical electives were firmly embedded in the construction management programme in 2007 and this paper reports on the third, final phase of the project in 2009 which has seen construction management students graduate with a dual qualification – both a TAFE qualification and a Higher Education degree. The case studies of this final phase reveal that students and industry want the benefits of a practical qualification. The data raises critical questions about education pathways and suggests long-term implications for construction and dual sector education in Australia.
