Susceptibilidade antimicrobiana ao metronidazole de microrganismos isolados de periodontite crônica e agressiva

The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbial susceptibility to metronidazole from microorganisms isolated from patients with chronic or aggressive periodontitis. The samples were obtained from 50 patients with periodontitis and microorganisms were isolated onto selective and nonselective culture media, identified by biochemical methods and tested for susceptibility to metronidazole. The results evidenced the susceptibility to metronidazole among gram-negative anaerobes and some intermediate susceptibility and resistance among Grampositive anaerobes and facultatives.

Considerações atuais da sialolitíase de ducto de glândula submandibular

The sialolithiasis is characterized by the formation of calcified structure called sialolith within the salivary ductal system. Although its etiology is unknown, it is believed that is from the deposition of calcium salts around an accumulation of organic leftovers in the lumen of the duct or be resulted by chronic sialadenitis and partial obstruction. In this study, the authors describe a case of a male patient, 46 years old, brown, who presented the complaint “pain under the tongue.” The presence of a hardened nodule located in the left sublingual fold was observed through intra-oral exam. Current considerations about treatment, clinical and radiographic characteristics were addressed in this work.

Determinação fenotípica das haptoglobinas em pacientes com dor crônica causadas por desordens temporomandibulares

The phenotypes of the hemoglobin-haptoglobin (HbHp) system were measured in 124 subjects, 100 patients with chronic pain in temporomandibular disorders and 24 normal, without any bodily pain during the years 2000 -2003. The system Hb-Hp showed polymorphism Hp1-1, Hp2-1 and Hp2-2, at 100% and 85% respectively; anahaptoglobinemia (Hp0) in 15% of the sample studied. Hp1-1 genotype was present significantly (p < 0, 0001) in patients with TMDs, regardless the clinical type TMD, suggesting that Hp1-1 and likely genetic marker of susceptibility for the development of chronic pain in TMD.

Influência da ingestão do suco de laranja sobre o estado nutricional e variáveis bioquímicas de pacientes com hepatite C crônica

Infection with hepatitis C virus is a worldwide public health problem it affects about 170 to 250 million people worldwide may lead to complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Patients with chronic hepatitis C most often is inadequate nutrient intake, macro and micronutrients, which induces changes in nutritional status and lipid profi le. Supplementation with vitamin C has shown benefi t. Limited information is available on levels of vitamin C in this type of illness. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of regular intake of orange juice on the nutritional and dietetic of patients with chronic hepatitis C infection. The study enrolled 23 patients volunteers, 13 men and 10 women treated at the Special Health Service of Araraquara (SESA). They consumed for 8 weeks 500 mL.d-1 of pasteurized orange juice. At baseline and after 8 weeks of juice intake the patients were evaluated for anthropometric parameters. The dietary intervention with 500 mL.d-1 with orange juice during the 8 weeks did not alter the nutritional status of patients.

Intoxicação crônica por chumbo e implicação no desenvolvimento escolar

To understand the implications of lead contamination contributes to more effective public politics to eliminate exposure to the metal and orientation of interventions that minimize their effects. In this paper we intended to evaluate the effects of lead contamination in children, with the Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE). In Study 1, transversal, aimed to evaluate the influence of blood lead levels in 28 participants of both sexes, of seven to fifteen years, divided into two groups according to the level of contamination. In Study 2, longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the effects of contamination on the school ,performance of 10 children at an interval of four years. Results showed significant underperformance for children with higher levels of contamination and that the level of academic performance remains significantly lower than expected for the series in which they find themselves. The data seem to indicate the deleterious effects of lead contamination in school performance.
