We report the synergistic reinforcement and deformation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/graphene/montmorillonite clay (MMT) composites with the tensile properties being improved greatly. Particularly, the tensile strength and modulus of PVA composite with 0.9 wt% graphene and 0.3 wt% of MMT were improved by more than 58% and 43% when compared to the neat PVA, respectively, and were at least 10% higher than the enhanced sum of dual PVA composites with 0.9 wt% graphene and 0.3 wt% MMT. This reinforcement was resulted from the good dispersion and effective interfacial interactions as confirmed from morphology investigation, increased glass transition temperature and the shift of O-H stretching. When there were no fillers i.e. in situ reduced graphene (IRG) or MMT or their loading was low, high alignment of PVA could be observed, with increased crystallinity, melting point, lamellae thickness but narrowed crystallite size distribution. The synergistic reinforcement of PVA achieved from combined incorporation of IRG and MMT will pave the way for the development of stronger PVA composites in various applications.

The shift towards strong and lightweight fibre reinforced polymer-matrix composites for many high performance applications has resulted in an increasing need to expose students to composite design and manufacture courses in the undergraduate curriculum. In contrast, student exposure to composite materials is often still limited to a topic within a materials or manufacturing related course (unit). This paper presents the initial offering of a composite materials elective at Griffith University in Australia. The course also addresses environmental concerns through the inclusion of natural fibre composites. An evaluation of student perceptions is considered from Griffith’s Student Experience of Course (SEC) and separate Student Experience of Teaching (SET) surveys. These evaluations demonstrate the high level of student engagement with the course, but also highlighted areas for improvement, including the need to incorporate even more hands-on practical work. Interestingly, the inclusion of natural fibre composites and the related discussion surrounding environmental and societal issues are not focused on in student feedback.

Graphite and numerous graphitic-derived micro- and nano-particles have gained importance in current materials science research. These two-dimensional sheets of sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms remarkably influence the properties of polymers. Graphene mono-layers, graphene oxides, graphite oxides, exfoliated graphite, and other related materials are derived from a parental graphite structure. In this review, we focus primarily on the role of these fillers in regulating the electrical and sensing properties of polymer composites. It has been demonstrated that the addition of an optimized mixture of graphene and or its derivatives to various polymers produces a record-high enhancement of the electrical conductivity and achieved semiconducting characteristics at small filler loading, making it suitable for sensor manufacture. Promising sensing characteristics are observed in graphite-derived composite films compared with those of micro-sized composites and the properties are explained mainly based on the filler volume fraction, nature and rate of dispersion and the filler polymer interactions at the interface. In short, this critical review aims to provide a thorough understanding of the recent advances in the area of graphitic-based polymer composites in advanced electronics. Future perspectives in this rapidly developing field are also discussed.

We report on the synthesis of platinum nanoparticle-reduced graphene oxide (PtNP-rGO) composites and their application as a novel architecture in electrochemical detection of rutin. PtNPs anchored over rGO are synthesized through a facile one-pot synthesis method, where the reduction of GO and in situ generation of PtNPs occurred concurrently. The characterization results of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrate that PtNPs with small particle sizes are dispersed on the rGO matrix. Electrochemical measurements reveal that a PtNP-rGO modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) directly catalyzes rutin oxidation and displays an enhanced current response compared with a bare GCE. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the peak current was linear with rutin concentration in the range of 5 × 10-8 to 1 × 10-5 M with the detection limit of 1 × 10-8 M (S/N = 3) by differential pulse voltammetry. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine rutin in tablet samples with satisfactory results. This journal is

As a biological fibrous structure, silkworm cocoon provides multiple protective functionalities to safeguard the silk moth pupa’s metabolic activity. The mechanism of this protection could be adopted in clothing manufacture to provide more comfortable apparel. In this study, the thermal insulation properties of both domestic Bombyx mori (B. mori) and wild Antheraea pernyi (A. pernyi) cocoons were investigated under both warm and cold environmental conditions. Computational fluid dynamics models have been developed to simulate the heat transfer process through both types of cocoon wall structures. The simulation results show that the wild A. pernyi cocoon reduces the intensity of convection and heat flux between the environment and the cocoon interior and has higher wind resistance than its domestic counterpart. Compared with A. pernyi cocoon, the B. mori cocoon facilitates easy air transfer and decreases the temperature lag when the surrounding conditions are changed. The new knowledge has significant implications for developing biomimetic thermal functional materials.

Decomposition of poly(vinyl alcohol)/montmorillonite clay (PVA/MMT) composites during melting-crystallization was experimentally confirmed by morphology and molecular structure changes. In particular, FTIR spectra show the shift of O-H stretching band as well as enhanced intensities of C-O stretching and CH2 rocking vibrational modes. Furthermore, Raman deconvolution indicates that C-H wagging, CH2-CH wagging, CH-CO bending and CH2 wagging modes in amorphous domains were all decreased greatly. Moreover, this decomposition leads to decreased melting enthalpy, melting point, crystallization enthalpy and crystallization temperature. Crystallization analysis shows that the MMT incorporated slows down the crystallization process in the PVA matrix regardless of the nucleation capability of MMT. Despite the severe decomposition, the crystallization kinetics still corroborated well with common classical models. As a result, molecular structure changes and crystallization retardation observed in this study clearly indicate the strong effects of the thermal degradation on the non-isothermal crystallization of PVA/MMT composites.

This paper focuses on the influence of processing temperature and inclusion of micron-sized B4C, TiB2 and ZrSiO4 on the mechanical performance of aluminium matrix composites fabricated through stir casting. The ceramic/aluminium composite could withstand greater external loads, due to interfacial ceramic/aluminium bonding effect on the movement of grain and twin boundaries. Based on experimental results, the tensile strength and hardness of ceramic reinforced composite are significantly increased. The maximum improvement is achieved through adding ZrSiO4 and TiB2, which has led to 52% and 125% increase in tensile strength and hardness, respectively. To predict the effect of incorporating ceramic reinforcements on the mechanical properties of composites, experimental data of mechanical tests are used to create 3 models named Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm (LMA) neural networks. The results show that the LMA- neural networks models have a high level of accuracy in the prediction of mechanical properties for ceramic reinforced-aluminium matrix composites.

In this article, we reported a new method in which molybdenum heteropolyacid salt was selected to mix with lanthanum oxide and bentonite, respectively, and the dipping method was used to prepare the new composites of heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide, heteropolyacid salt–bentonite, and heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide–bentonite. We observed that the composites have a better removal effect for phosphorus by control of the ratio and calcination temperature. The effect of quantity, adsorption time, phosphorus wastewater concentration, and pH value of composites on phosphorus adsorption was studied. We also found that the removal rate of phosphorus by the composite of heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxides increases up to 99.1% under the condition of 1:1 mass ratio and 500°C of calcination temperature. IR and XRD studies suggest that molybdenum heteropolyacid salt has been loaded to lanthanum oxide carrier successfully and heteropolyacid salt keeps the original Keggin structure. Heteropolyacid salt–lanthanum oxide has a good adsorption effect on phosphorus under the condition of 0.15 g of the composite, 90 min of adsorption time, phosphorus concentration of 50 mg L−1, and pH value of 3. The adsorption of phosphorus corresponds with the Langmuir isotherm model and Lagergren first-order kinetics equation. Therefore, the composite has excellent absorption ability and was competent in removing phosphorus with a low concentration from aqueous solution. It could be a great potential adsorbent for the removal of phosphorus in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs.

Brazil is the only country in South America to have an automotive supplier sector based on natural fibers. New opportunities are arising due to an increase demand by the car makers in applying natural fibers in their parts. Several crop fibers have been developed in Brazil. Among them can be listed caroa, piacava, pupunha, mutum and others of regional application. For the automotive industry, which requires large quantities with uniform quality, the alternatives are sisal (170,000 ton/yr), curaua (150 ton/yr in 2003), malva, 200 ton/yr; Brazil is the single largest producer country of sisal, and commercially, the only one in curaua. For South America, the alternatives are fique in Colombia, abaca in equator, flax in Argentina and curaua in Venezuela. It must be understood by the target countries of drugs, is that crop fiber can be an economic alternative to coca in the Andes region, therefore an instrument of land reform and drug reduction plantations. Several companies have a strong program of apply natural fibers based components in their products: Volkswagen do Brazil, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors do Brazil. Among their suppliers can be listed companies such Pematec (curaua), Toro (sisal, coir and jute), Incomer (sisal and jute), Ober (jute, curaua), Indaru (jute and sisal), Antolin (imported kenaf,) Tapetes Sao Carlos (sisal), Poematec (coir) and Art-Gore, with Woodstock'' wood and natural fibers). Figures about production and demand are discussed in the paper.
