Tialite, beta-Al2TiO5, a low expansion material, has been synthesised by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrates and carbohydrazide (CH) or urea redox mixtures at 500-degrees-C. As prepared powders contained tialite, rutile, and corundum in the mole ratios of 50:25:25 (CH) and 20:40:40 (urea). The combustion derived powders, when calcined 30 min at 1300-degrees-C, gave single phase beta-tialite having a surface area of 20-25 m2 g-1 and a particle size of 0.79-1.03 mum.

Thin films of zirconia have been synthesized using reactive DC magnetron sputtering. It has been found that films with good optical constants, high refractive index (1.9 at 600 nm) and low extinction coefficient can be prepared al ambient temperatures. The optical constants and band gnp and hence the composition nle dependent on the deposition parameters such as target power, rate of deposition and oxygen background pressure. Thermal annealing of the films revealed that tile films showed optical and crystalline inhomogeneity and also large variations in optical constants.

The synthesis, X-ray crystal structure, and magnetic properties of an angular trinuclear copper(II) complex [Cu3(O2CMC)4(bpy)3(H2O)](PF6)2 (1), obtained from a reaction of Cu2(O2CMe)4(H2O)2 With 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and NH4PF6 in ethanol, are reported. Complex 1 crystallizes in triclinic space group P1BAR with a = 11.529(1) angstrom, b = 12.121(2) angstrom, c = 17.153(2) angstrom, alpha = 82.01(1)-degrees, beta = 79.42(1)-degrees, gamma = 89.62(1)-degrees, and Z = 2. A total of 6928 data with I > 2.5sigma(I) were refined to R = 0.0441 and R(w) = 0.0557. The structure consists of a trinuclear core bridged by four acetate ligands showing different bonding modes. The coordination geometry at each copper is distorted square-pyramidal with a CuN2O2...O chromophore. The Cu...Cu distances are 3.198(1) angstrom, 4.568(1) angstrom, and 6.277(1) angstrom. There are two monoatomic acetate bridges showing Cu-O-Cu angles of 93.1(1) and 97.5(1)-degrees. Magnetic studies in the temperature range 39-297 K show the presence of a strong ferromagnetically coupled dicopper(II) unit (2J = +158 cm-1) and an essentially isolated copper(II) center (2J' = -0.4 cm-1) in 1. The EPR spectra display an axial spectrum giving g(parallel-to) = 2.28 (A(parallel-to) = 160 X 10(-4) cm-1) and g(perpendicular-to) = 2.06 (A(perpendicular-to) = 12 X 10(-4) cm-1) for the normal copper and two intense isotropic signals with g values 2.70 and 1.74 for the strongly coupled copper pair. The structural features of 1 compare well with the first generation models for ascorbate oxidase.

The title complex has been prepared from a reaction of [Ru2O(O22CMe)2 (MeCN)4(PPH3)2](ClO4)2 with N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane (dmen) in MeOH. The crystal structure of [Ru2O(O2CMe)2(dmen)2(PPh3)2](ClO4)2.MeOH shows the presence of a [Ru2(mu-O)(mu-O2CMe)2]2+ core. The terminal ligands on each metal are a PPh3 and a bidentate chelating dmen. The Ru-Ru distance and Ru-O-Ru angle in the core are 3.271(2) angstrom and 120.9(4)-degrees. The more electron-donating site of the dmen ligand is bonded at the terminal sites trans to the mu-oxo ligand. The complex displays a visible absorption band at 566 nm (epsilon, 6960 M-1 cm-1) in MeCN and undergoes a nearly reversible one-electron oxidation at 1.02 V and an irreversible reduction at -0.52 V (vs SCE) in MeCN-0.1 M [NBu4n](ClO4).

The as-deposited and annealed radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtered tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) films were characterized by studying the chemical binding configuration, structural and electrical properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis of the films elucidate that the film annealed at 673 K was stoichiometric with orthorhombic beta-phase Ta2O5. The dielectric constant values of the tantalum oxide capacitors with the sandwich structure of Al/Ta2O5/Si were in the range from 14 to 26 depending on the post-deposition annealing temperature. The leakage current density was < 20 nA cm(-2) at the gate bias voltage of 0.04 MV/cm for the annealed films. The electrical conduction mechanism observed in the films was Poole-Frenkel. This article describes a facile, low-cost, solution-phase approach to the large-scale preparation of Hg1-xCdxTe nanostructures of different shapes such as nanorods, quantum dots, hexagonal cubes of different sizes and different compositions at a growth temperature of 180 degrees C using an air stable Te source by solvothermal technique. The XRD spectrum shows that the crystals are cubic in their basic structure and reveals the variation in lattice constant as a function of composition. The size and morphology of the products were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of irregular shaped particles and few nano-rods in the present synthesis is attributed to the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The room temperature FTIR absorption and PL studies for a compositon of x = 0.8 gives a band gap of 1.1 eV and a broad emission in NIR region (0.5-0.9 eV) with all bands attributed to surface defects.

Dissolution of barium ion from aqueous suspensions of commercial nano-sized barium titanate powders (BaTiO3) has been studied at various pH values, solids loading, different time intervals and different electrolyte concentrations. Zeta potential measurements at various pH values and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study were also carried out to know the surface behaviour. Dissolution of Ba2+ depends on the suspension pH and stirring time period. The iso-electric points were found at 3.4 and 12.2 for as-received BaTiO3 powder and 2.3 for the leached BaTiO3. The Ba2+-leached BaTiO3 suspension retards further leaching of Ba2+ ions at different pH values, which favours the achievement of stable suspension.

Layered lanthanide sulfate compounds with three different structures have been prepared and characterized. The compounds C10H10N2] La(SO4)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (I), C10H10N2] La(SO4)(2)(H2O)(2)](2) (Ha), C10H10N2]Pr(SO4)(2)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIb), C10H10N2]Nd-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIIa), C10H10N2]Sm-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)](2) (IIIb), and C10H10N2]Eu-2(SO4)(4)(H2O)(2)] 2 (IIIC) have anionic lanthanide sulfate layers separated by protonated bipyridine molecules. The layers are formed by the connectivity between the lanthanide polyhedra and sulfate tetrahedra. The formation of a two-dimensional La-O-La layer (la), Pr-O-Pr chains (IIb), and a tetramer cluster (IIIa) is noteworthy. The compounds exhibit honeycomb (I), square (IIa, IIb), and honeycomb (IIIa-IIIc) net arrangements, when the connectivity between the lanthanide ions is considered. Optical studies indicate the observation of characteristic metal-centered emission at room temperature. The Nd compound (IIIa) exhibits a two-photon upconversion behavior.
