Complexes of arsenic compounds and glutathione are believed to play an essential part in the metabolism and transport of inorganic arsenic and its methylated species. Up to now, the evidence of their presence is mostly indirect. We studied the stability and Chromatographic behaviour of glutathione complexes with trivalent arsenic: i.e. AsIII(GS)3, MA III(GS)2 and DMAIII(GS) under different conditions. Standard ion chromatography using PRP X-100 and carbonate or formic acid buffer disintegrated the complexes, while all three complexes are stable and separable by reversed phase chromatography (0.1% formic acid/acetonitrile gradient). AsIII(GS)3 and MAIII(GS)2 were more stable than DMAIII(GS), which even under optimal conditions tended to degrade on the column at 25 °C. Chromatography at 6 °C can retain the integrity of the samples. These results shed more light on the interpretation of a vast number of previously published arsenic speciation studies, which have used Chromatographic separation techniques with the assumption that the integrity of the arsenic species is guaranteed. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2004.

This paper presents an analytical solution for the solid stresses in a silo with an internal tube. The research was conducted to support the design of a group of full scale silos with large inner concrete tubes. The silos were blasted and formed out of solid rock underground for storing iron ore pellets. Each of these silos is 40m in diameter and has a 10m diameter concrete tube with five levels of openings constructed at the centre of each rock silo. A large scale model was constructed to investigate the stress regime for the stored pellets and to evaluate the solids flow pattern and the loading on the concrete tube. This paper focuses on the development of an analytical solution for stresses in the iron ore pellets in the silo and the effect of the central tube on the stress regimes. The solution is verified using finite element analysis before being applied to analyse stresses in the solid in the full scale silo and the effect of the size of the tube.

This paper discusses compact-stencil finite difference time domain (FDTD) schemes for approximating the 2D wave equation in the context of digital audio. Stability, accuracy, and efficiency are investigated and new ways of viewing and interpreting the results are discussed. It is shown that if a tight accuracy constraint is applied, implicit schemes outperform explicit schemes. The paper also discusses the relevance to digital waveguide mesh modelling, and highlights the optimally efficient explicit scheme.

Discussion forums have evolved into a dependablesource of knowledge to solvecommon problems. However, only a minorityof the posts in discussion forumsare solution posts. Identifying solutionposts from discussion forums, hence, is animportant research problem. In this paper,we present a technique for unsupervisedsolution post identification leveraginga so far unexplored textual feature, thatof lexical correlations between problemsand solutions. We use translation modelsand language models to exploit lexicalcorrelations and solution post characterrespectively. Our technique is designedto not rely much on structural featuressuch as post metadata since suchfeatures are often not uniformly availableacross forums. Our clustering-based iterativesolution identification approach basedon the EM-formulation performs favorablyin an empirical evaluation, beatingthe only unsupervised solution identificationtechnique from literature by a verylarge margin. We also show that our unsupervisedtechnique is competitive againstmethods that require supervision, outperformingone such technique comfortably.

Textual problem-solution repositories are available today in
various forms, most commonly as problem-solution pairs from community
question answering systems. Modern search engines that operate on
the web can suggest possible completions in real-time for users as they
type in queries. We study the problem of generating intelligent query
suggestions for users of customized search systems that enable querying
over problem-solution repositories. Due to the small scale and specialized
nature of such systems, we often do not have the luxury of depending on
query logs for finding query suggestions. We propose a retrieval model
for generating query suggestions for search on a set of problem solution
pairs. We harness the problem solution partition inherent in such
repositories to improve upon traditional query suggestion mechanisms
designed for systems that search over general textual corpora. We evaluate
our technique over real problem-solution datasets and illustrate that
our technique provides large and statistically significant
